5 years ago i started watercolor painting and the first channel i subcribe was yours …. I learn so much I used to paint almost every day and I got better and better each time. Unfortunately I gone through a bad depression and I stop drawing and paint and do all those things that I love but i’m here again trying to learn what I used to know already but for some reason, I forgot everything I learned and one more time I’m on your channel again thank you so much for making my days better
This is a wonderful demonstration of a process that’s rather mysterious. It’s like opening a box with no idea what’s in it. Thank you. Your style is fascinating.
Your channel is the only one I keep comming back to. I started watercolor painting about a year ago. After a while I got frustrated and stopped. I felt like I couldnt improve and I had no ideas either. I didnt know the technics you need to get the hang of it and I also was very impatient. I found your channel amongst many others and I had this WOW experience about spontanious painting. I took out my brushes and started. You made me paint almost every day now, even late at night after a long and hard day of work, just by the inspiration you give me. My pictures dont look like yours of course but I am pleased with the learning results. I get to know the pigments and what they do, depending on how I use them. I want to say thank you for sharing your knowledge and your exerience and letting me learn.... Dankeschön from Germany!!!
This is so inspiring that I got up and got my paper masked. A lightbulb went off in my head when you mentioned putting in the details and looking at areas of contrast to help guide the finishing process. The powers of observation is key. Can't wait to get my painting started.
I saw a quote from Andy Warhol that goes like this: just paint, leave it to others to decide if it’s any good, and while they are making up their minds, paint some more
LOL no matter how often you tell us that you don't plan this......I know for a fact that after your first laying in of color you "wiggle" your nose and create a masterpiece.........I had to look at this one again.......and will most likely watch this "magic" again....thank you so much!
No matter how many times I've watched you do this, it's still remarkable to me how beautiful the works come out. I've tried it a couple of times, and blew it totally. You said something in this one that struck me. I don't think I'm looking at them long enough, or been as patient as I need to be. Also, I really appreciated it when you in one of your posts "Embrace your failures," I found that hugely useful. Thanks a lot Steve.
Yes, I really like this after two… I think I overworked the second and my sketcbook paper doesn’tmake the thready runs. But I like looking at the second one and coming back to it, kind of doodling patiently. But yes, learning and experimenting.
Thanks Steve. It's a pleasure to support your work. I love seeing how you defined the rocks and trees and mist... really lovely and rewarding. Fun to enjoy your delight in the discovery with you...
Wow, I am definitely pretty pleased with what you did too! I could see almost exactly what you painted with the details when you were talking about how your process of looking at the results of the the paint doing most of the work. I really love how your spontaneous painting turns out to what I think are stunning landscapes. This was tons of fun to watch. I have yet to try to do spontaneous painting but this has really made me want to try it. Thanks for sharing this with us and hope you’re enjoying a great weekend!
Aww! "Visual library" I was looking for something similar for so long, in my mind, to phrase it. I don't like to google up images to have a reference (until it is neccessary for details, colours (animals for example)). A visual library. Thank you!
I came here to find your video on doing Backgrounds w/ w.c. pencils and WOW! I got hypnotized by this video. Thanks Steve for proving we should never give up on possible magic. I thought you were finished at 14:00 when it looked gorgeous, but then you went on to define the rocks and trees that I didn't see and the magic started. It was wonderful & inspirational to watch. Again, thank you Steve for sharing your gift.
Thank you!! Love these spontaneous paintings! 😃 You do a fantastic job! I am a very green newbie to watercolor!! 😊 Never tried these before but love what you do with the watercolor!
I watched a couple videos…. Thought hmmm I think I can…. My first try was less than I hoped, my paper is very warped from water… but I will try again. You are a great teacher! Thank you for the tutorials.
This was fabulous Steve. Thanks so much for demonstrating its simplicity! You take a lot of pressure off with your laid-back attitude. But I know your 30+ yrs of experience helps too. 😊❤
About masking fluid, I recently saw it in another video as tip, to buy a neutral soap (any, cheap soap can do) and use it only for painting, as an accessory. With wetting brush and coating it with a little amount of soap and then dip in the masking liquid and apply it as you were to. I have not tried it yet. Anyone used to do this with soap? Does it work well? I am going to try it out I have already bought a soap for this. 😊 Brush can be really destroyed if you don't clean it directly after using masking liquid. I like to use masking marker (Solo Goya is the brand I have ) for small details.
Love the colors! This worked out so beautifully- I do get excited when you post a spontaneous painting video, it truly is magic to watch. That little stand of shrubs to the left to balance the composition-amazing. I understand completely you know your subject matter well, but like I said- Magic! Thanks Steve!
Hi, on holiday and so took watercolour and ink pens when I normally use acrylic. This is such helpful honest information and guidance. Seeing and creating isn’t a quick experience and you have helped.
This was an awesome tutorial! Thankyou so much. This answered lots of questions for me. Could you please do more of these, especially with the last part of your vid.
Wow. You are so gifted, and so generous to share your gift with us. I was truly blessed watching you, and seeing this beautiful landscape emerge from what first appeared to be chaos.
On the one hand, I focus on this type of landscape with similar techniques, and a new Schmincke super granular Horadam kit, I also make very careful vegetable watercolours with a geometric composition. I am delighted to have discovered your site being looking for tutorials to showcase my new grainy watercolours, thank you
I love the teal leaning tree with the suggestion of straight trees in the background. My eyes can’t leave that point. I need to remember that not all trees grow straight. Thank you.
in the earlier stage of this piece it looked like some of the images coming from the WEBB telescope. I’ve been wondering how to put an idea of those gases and planets on paper and I think you nailed it.
This is, hands down, one of the best videos of yours, and even others, that I have watched! Absolutely magical and so inspiring! Thank you so much for this!🥰
Thank you Steve! I’m experimenting with these more and more. I love the process. It gets better as one does them more. One other thing I’d suggest is working on them small to start with, for example doing bookmarks. Working small helps me to focus better on the details. Spontaneous painting is truly magical. One of many things I absolutely love about watercolor. It’s the most rewarding medium ever. Blessings to you and everyone!
Just can’t say enough about how much I love this! Going to try that myself because I love seeing what watercolor does and how it just paints itself! Text a Master to see what’s there! Like Michelangelo, it’s in the stone, he just extracts the image!
Nice spending the evening with you. I love the surprises of your spontaneity, and your enthusiasm is always infectious! The result is magically unexpected. Thank you!
That was fun to watch, though I do find myself holding my breath at times. What the paint present med to me was a British flower garden with a stoney path. I probably would have attempted an arbor. Nonetheless, watching you paint brings me joy, Thank you.
I use the backs of failed paintings, and sometimes I'm pleased with the back painting. How do I mat these back paintings to gift or sell? I know I can use a cradle (thanks Steve), but what other ways do you suggest?
Your spontaneous paintings are my favorite videos to watch on RUclips. I get so excited when I see the same things as you do and I’m always impressed with your eye to see when to stop. Thank you for the gift you share.
In MoC, you give again & again the most amazing insight & help... into 'how to see'. Given my own late start into painting, it is more about forgetting what 'should' be and more about discovering ways to see differently, and simply. Just so grateful for your site :) .
Another great Spontaneous work of art. I really do enjoy these and it motivates me to practice my own spontaneous works. Over the past few weeks I’ve been wondering how you and your family have faired through the storm. Hoping that you’re doing well. Cheers Bob
I can't help it, I keep seeing forests and reflections below into water. It's all good! I'm so happy I found these videos on this spontaneous wc. I tried it last night and was blown away by what happened on the paper.
This just blew my "mind of watercolor"......I haven't been able to paint for the last several years because of my eyesight.....with my new eyes now and glasses coming ,I look forward to getting down to the to the nib of a new era in my painting journey......thanks to you ,you have shown me the way to a loose and beautiful way of painting.....Bless you and your shared talent!
I am not sure why I insist on this, but I want to do this spontaneous painting! I was going to take a break then I was recommended this video and of course I had to watch! Thanks for continuing to create amazing videos and simply being an awesome painter! Please take care and have yourself a lovely day!

Stay with girl. I fight depression as well. Painting makes it go away.
This is a wonderful demonstration of a process that’s rather mysterious. It’s like opening a box with no idea what’s in it. Thank you. Your style is fascinating.
I know! I look at Steve's process and think, "How did he see that?" Then How did he even DO that?
Your channel is the only one I keep comming back to. I started watercolor painting about a year ago. After a while I got frustrated and stopped. Love those colors! The mystical foliage with the realistic rocks makes a well grounded magical painting!
What I appreciate is your constant emphasis on having fun …. Most of us will not be in the gallery, but all of us can enjoy painting
I saw a quote from Andy Warhol that goes like this: just paint, leave it to others to decide if it’s any good, and while they are making up their minds, paint some more

I love this . Thank you so much for sharing this technique
Aww! "Visual library"
I was looking for something similar for so long, in my mind, to phrase it.
I don't like to google up images to have a reference (until it is neccessary for details, colours (animals for example)).
A visual library. Thank you!
I love this video❤
Thank you for doing this!!!!
I always learn so much when I watch your watercolor tutorials.
Wow I just love that painting. The colour's are beautiful. Have not seen watercolors done this way. Thanks . Will watch some more . 😊
Masterful! You take watercolour to another level… 🙏🎨🙏

Another way to describe how to make the scene is that it's similar to seeing things in the clouds. Except this is a jumble of clouds.
Damn, that is amazing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I watched a couple videos…. Thought hmmm I think I can…. My first try was less than I hoped, my paper is very warped from water… but I will try again. You are a great teacher! Thank you for the tutorials.

My favorite in fact the only kind of water color I have I test in. I watch your channel and enjoy it because it’s a medium I know nothing about.
Thank you. Your instructions, explanations, hints and tips are so appreciated.
Spectacular!! I’m finally getting a chance to catch up on your older posts. Huge fan of spontaneous painting!!
Love the colors! This worked out so beautifully- I do get excited when you post a spontaneous painting video, it truly is magic to watch. Wow, I really enjoyed this video. Thank you for showing how you do this, as it was a true joy. I can't wait to try it. Paula
🤯 Oh my goodness….. that was amazing….kudos to you!!!!!!
Love your channel. Watched this video last night and painted one. Not bad but I need to use your colors.
Hi, on holiday and so took watercolour and ink pens when I normally use acrylic. This is such helpful honest information and guidance. Seeing and creating isn’t a quick experience and you have helped.
I just found your channel. Your painting is brilliant and beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing.

This was an awesome tutorial! Thankyou so much. This answered lots of questions for me. Could you please do more of these, especially with the last part of your vid.
Oh my gosh! I couldn’t figure how you could make a landscape from the mixed colors send drippage. Then lo and behold…you did it!!! What inspiration!
Wow. You are so gifted, and so generous to share your gift with us. I was truly blessed watching you, and seeing this beautiful landscape emerge from what first appeared to be chaos.

Wonerful video!! I sometimes have to stop the videos and come back later. Do those Likes still count for you?
I love the teal leaning tree with the suggestion of straight trees in the background. My eyes can’t leave that point. I need to remember that not all trees grow straight. Thank you.
in the earlier stage of this piece it looked like some of the images coming from the WEBB telescope. I’ve been wondering how to put an idea of those gases and planets on paper and I think you nailed it.
I love what we're seeing coming from the JWT. Amazing!
This is, hands down, one of the best videos of yours, and even others, that I have watched! Absolutely magical and so inspiring! Thank you so much for this!🥰
J'adore ce procédé de création ! Et votre bonne humeur😃 vous me donnez l'envie d'essayer ! Merci beaucoup pour votre gentillesse.
Thank you Steve! I’m experimenting with these more and more. I love the process. It gets better as one does them more. I love this technique. Thanks for sharing.
That’s amazing. Thank you for sharing.
Absolument magnifique merci pour ce super partage bravo!
I hit the like button before you pulled a brush out!!
I was thinking undersea coral. What a superb harmony!! 🥰🥰🥰
Waouh so magical ! Thanks from France .
Will I ever tire of seeing your spontaneous paintings? NEVER!
Wow, really love how this turned out. Will give it a try with lots of paint I just got. Would it work with Schminke granulating colors you think?
Absolutely. I think Steve liked it so much because he used all granulating paints :)
Absolutely!
An abstract spontanious work... adds doimension to some of my efforts - TNX!
So inspiring, thankyou so much.
Marvelous. Challenging.
A new favorite!!
Nice spending the evening with you. I love the surprises of your spontaneity, and your enthusiasm is always infectious! The result is magically unexpected. Thank you!
Amazing. Thank you.
Looks like a wood out of a fairytale. ☺️
That was fun to watch, though I do find myself holding my breath at times. What the paint present med to me was a British flower garden with a stoney path. I probably would have attempted an arbor. Nonetheless, watching you paint brings me joy, Thank you.
What is the last pointed brush you used?
I haven't had a chance to watch for quite a while. So glad to see this!
Thanks. Request.....how about doing a session or two on painting a large piece (1/2 sheet or bigger???)?
At some point I may try that. It's a challenge for my video recording set up though.
I use the backs of failed paintings, and sometimes I'm pleased with the back painting. How do I mat these back paintings to gift or sell? I know I can use a cradle (thanks Steve), but what other ways do you suggest?
No special way that I know of. Just in the usual way.
When you rubbed the masking fluid off, all I could see was a bank of funghi - then you turned it into a lovely magical forest. 😍
Hi Steve, just a head's up the code for the Lebenzon brushes has expired. I ordered anyway and am sure looking forward to them!
Ok thanks.
Just love this ❤️👍🇨🇦
ThNk you - love the process
LOVE how this turned out!
Hey thanks Emily!
wow that was magical thank you
That was amazing!
More spontaneous paintings please. You inspire me and encourage me to think outside the box. ❤
OMG....what an inspiration
Organic groovy-ness🙃
Watching this with the music was a joy! It really made my Saturday💁🏼♀️Thanks💕
WOW 😍
So very good! Thank you so much🤩
Oops Steve, your link to yellow iron oxide goes to the oil paint version. Love your spontaneous videos, thanks!
Thanks for that!
It's fun seeing the scene appear from how the paint interacts. Thank you for sharing another of these!
What a beauty, this painting is a true happiness to watch... A real enchanted forest! Once upon a time in Steve's world...
So beautiful and I love the combination of these paints. What is the name of the fine detailing brush that you used?
Lebenzon. See the video description.
LOVE watching your spontaneous painting process.
You made my day with this magical work of art. So beautiful and dreamy to look upon. Such a gift to us all.
Your spontaneous paintings are my favorite videos to watch on RUclips. I get so excited when I see the same things as you do and I’m always impressed with your eye to see when to stop. Thank you for the gift you share.
This is amazing!
Love, love, love this!
I love it every time spontaneous watercolour spontaneously returns!
At the end of the 2nd layer, I was seeing a vase of flowers.
Really beautiful.
In MoC, you give again & again the most amazing insight & help... into 'how to see'. Given my own late start into painting, it is more about forgetting what 'should' be and more about discovering ways to see differently, and simply. Just so grateful for your site :) .
Beautiful
wow so cool to watch~~!~
Fantastico¡ Mucho tiempo sin disfrutar de tus demos de pintura espontánea, son increibles¡ Le daré una oportunidad al masking, como has hecho.
Another great Spontaneous work of art. I really do enjoy these and it motivates me to practice my own spontaneous works.
Over the past few weeks I’ve been wondering how you and your family have faired through the storm. Hoping that you’re doing well.
Cheers
Bob
I can't help it, I keep seeing forests and reflections below into water. It's all good! I'm so happy I found these videos on this spontaneous wc. I tried it last night and was blown away by what happened on the paper.
Love the colours definitely complimentary, thanks for sharing.😍👏👏
Awesome result❤
