The crank bearing went because the oil squirter mod was done but you NEED the 2007+ Higher Output Oil Pump to make up for the new oil flow ... The newer oil pump is part # 5D3-13300-00 and has the stamp E-1 - yours still has the 2005 oil pump which is stamped E-2 ... also I would get an OEM cam chain tensioner and throw that manual one in the trash as that's why the cam chain was loose and skipped time ...
Always love those "I haven't looked at it" and then open up the engine and it's obvious, someone was in there and didn't know what they were doing. Combined with "My friend's dad is a mechanic" - if we had as many as there are claimed, wouldn't be short so many in the shops.
I just bought a non runner motorcycle that I was able to get running. It's the first time I've done that. Partly inspired by channels like yours. I figured I could enjoy the bike for a little bit then sell it and make a little money. Mostly I just wanted to see if I could diagnose the problem and get it running. Obviously I couldn't hear it run, so I was hoping it was nothing catastrophic. Turns out it just needed a good carb clean/rebuild.

Joe, awesome video. I used to work at Yamaha as a mechanic, and those head bolts are on super tight, they most likely were not over torqued, they are just that tight. 22ft/lbs then 51ft/lbs then back off then 22ft/lbs then 180 degrees is the torque sequence.
Timing was off but that was on purpose. 1 tooth advance on the exhaust is a common mod. Essentially giving the bike the same timing as the motocross bike (whose engine is the same except for this) - improves performance.
I rebuild these quite a bit. You can drop a valve with the 2 piece valves. The crank will seize because poor oil lube design. You need to rebuild it. Split the cases and do the oil mod.
If you run Rotella T3 15W-40 for oil they are fine without the oil squirter mod. Diesel oil is a detergent oil so it contains zinc and molybdenum. You can thank the EPA and CAFE for taking the lubricity out of oil... Rotella is wet clutch rated too!

Out of all the RUclipsrs I watch you are the best If you can remove the rod from the crank inspect the crank to see if it survived by and chance and salvage the crank as it is the most expensive part to replace if so do it then it becomes a lot cheaper rebuild Sounds like the engine was stripped apart for a rebuild The owner at the time then needed the money so slapped it together so it ran and because it was slapped together and not assembled properly it failed to what you have uncovered and when you was inspecting it for the first time my thought was sounds like some form of timing issue
These normally sell in the 3k to 5k range. The seller told him it had a knock and was run low on oil. Pretty need to factor in an engine rebuild at that point.
From what I've seen is people who don't know how to ride, shift gears and have the rpms up so high the first thing to go is the crank, burns them right up! Top end is always beautiful!
Here's a good idea. If you see a lot of metal flakes in the oil (this was a ton), do NOT keep spinning the motor over creating more damage. I really thought that was common sense 😂
You’ll see this many times with this channel op. He often times does not think and is also impatient. He should of not done anything with this engine other than remove it from the frame and complete tear down IMO. I’d of also not given more than a grand for it.
Pretty sure Joe knew the motor was screwed up to that point, once it's done, then does it really matter if he keeps turning it over with no oil, not going to get any more screwed really, apart from maybe wiping the cam lobes
Spoken from people that probably have no experience in engine repair. Once it's damaged. The parts need to be replaced anyway. Wtf does it matter if he spins the engine over more? What it will damage the damaged parts more ? Wow
Bad cam chain was the first culprit in my opinion, caused everything else. Revised, both the main rod bearing and the cam chain were the culprit. Not sure i would have bought it wirh that noise though.

You shoudl get yourself one fo them impact screw drivers they can save you alot of headache when tearing down motors
My raptor 700 is completely just thrown together with all the parts they could find. Tons of hanging wires and weird engine noises but she still rips. Prolly needs a rebuild here soon 😂 she’s got jb weld gasket maker and all that good stuff not to mention the plastics are hanging off lmao
Miss my yfz450!!
Those are Pro Armor nerf bars....they're a good brand like 4.5/5*
Glad to see ur back on atvs and motorcycles
its pretty amazing the piston didnt hit the head with how much up and down play there is in it
Some of my “best deals “ are the ones I walked away from!
That kid was feeding you nothing but BS. He knows that motor is shot. I predict you'll be buying a new crank on this one Joe.
The yfz was off one tooth of timing on purpose. Back in the day that was what people did. you can run the same timing as the dirt bike for better performance.
On my 04 trx 450r back when it was knew i tried one of them elkas. My friend liked it. I hated how it took all feedback from front tires away so i would kick out more than i wanted to on the track.
If you find and 04 450r with original hrc you need to ride it. Pulls like a freight train but only really starts to pull at half throttle. But then will make power right to the limiter.
Sucks mine was stolen about 10 years ago i had stock shocks setup by derisi racing for my weight and my rear linkage was alst replaced by derisi link whick almost eliminates the kick from rearend when suspension got over heated. Hade lonestar racing firered +2.5inch wider and +1forward a-arms and a 2.5 inch extended axle. Was so fast im 130$ soaking wet so i use leave line in 3rd gear i was never beat to first corner on mx.
I lost one time dragracing a banshee that was over 400cc and he only beat me by a bumper.
Love it when Vinny does four wheel drive burnouts!! Dog's a star...
Buddy got the Busch light! Let’s go
I could see that oil/filter shine from a mile away. Never a good start.
