The zodiac killer reminds me of jack the ripper, most say the murders were masonic killings.
You should check out the book The Cases That Haunt Us by John Douglas and Mark Olshaker. John Douglas was a FBI profiler and he goes into many cases in the book. It includes Jack the Ripper, Lizzie Borden, the Zodiac and Jon Benet Ramsey among others. It looks at the evidence in each case in a thorough and rational manner.

This case is dizzying so many different theroies!One thing that we should consider is the fact that he picks victims with cars,that is a constant.If he is so involved in codes maybe he is looking at the plates,maybe that is a part of his MO. I think this might be something worth looking into.

Very good movie but it's mostly entertainment. Maybe only 35% of the movie is based on actual facts related to the case, the rest is fiction. One of my personal favorite but it's far from being 100% accurate. ✌

+e36mmm So who do you think the Zodiac was or is, as he could still be alive which I doubt. I was 11 when this first started and live in Northern California. I can remember in school we had to do "Zodiac Drills" when he threatened to overtake a school bus. Scary stuff back then, still is.
I can't deny that Gaikowski looks like a potential match, but I also believe it could be someone totally unknown. I'm almost certain that he will have some sort of "deathbed confession" and will likely be able to prove it by providing info on where the weapons are, where the mask is, or by providing further details only known to authorities. He could easily prove that he's smarter than the authorities (and the rest of the world) by providing answer keys for the unsolved ciphers, but I have a feeling that they might be garbage meant to waste resources.
And I've thought a lot about why He wore that costume at Berryessa and I tried to put myself in the mind of the man that would wear it and I am sure I know why and it's a theory I have got a lot of support with.
The black hood and chest symbol of The Cross Hairs was not so much to conceal his face and identity, a balaclava would have done just as good a job and been far easier to get hold of. The costume was worn by a man who loved hiding messages within codes, using symbolic references and hiding clues right in front of his pursuers masked as something it isn't. The costume has a meaning and message itself. It's this....
The design was identical to the classic 'executioners hood' worn by executioners, and at the time He had the cross hairs symbol stitched into it right in the center of the chest, that symbol had been used by Him to sign the end of His most recent letter which had been printed in the chronicle. So, that symbol was now publically printed in a letter written by a man who had attacked two teenage couples in the Bay Area. So for me, He wore this symbol for His own ego's curiosity to see whether the potential victims would recognize it and if they did, they'd know who stands in front of them. If they knew this, then they'd know also his claim of being an escapee from a prison in Montana was complete BS and He is likely to do to them what He'd done to the previous two couples, attempt to kill them.
He's encoded a message in the costume. It's the outfit worn by executioners and they only have one job description and it's to end another's life. So He's telling them He's there to execute them and not only what He is, but also Who He is by sporting the Symbol on his chest.
You know, the sad thing is about this incident is that I honestly believe if Bryan & Cecelia had recognized him as Zodiac and fled, He probably would not have shot at them. His ego would be satisfied they'd recognized the Great Zodiac, and if they didn't recognize Him then in His mind, they deserve death because He's telling them who He is and what He is by making it overtly obvious by his attire.

I have done a lot of research into this case and specifically Suspect Lawrence Kane and after several Freedom of Information Requests I finally got what I was asking them to release, Kane's full arrest record and any and all other files their Dpt. held in relation to Larry Kane and his being a suspect in the Zodiac Killer case.

I mean Bryan Hartnell was asked in 2007 what He though when He first laid eyeson the man wearing such a sinister looking costume and symbol in it's center said: "The symbolism on the front didn't mean anything to me. He didn't identify Himself as Zodiac so for me it could have come from a costume shop or A Novelty Store. To me this was just something He was wearing to hide His face."
Bryan is now a successful Attorney and at the time Z attacked and stabbed him was studying Law and seemed somewhat naive to the possibility that there are real psychopathic nut-bag's out there that will tell you any BS they need to if serves their hidden and sinister agenda to do so. Bryan said "I was cooperating with Him so I expected that He would Cooperate with me." Bryan likely knows now being older and wiser that you cannot reason with insanity. Hartnell also said that Zodiac seemed almost reassuring when Bryan first saw Him and went to get to his feet by saying: "Ok hold on everyone, your ok, I am an escaped prisoner and I just want your vehicle to get to Mexico. Just do what I tell you & nobody will get hurt." Bryan ended by saying of this statement by Zodiac "And.....I believed Him."
Bryan will not speak nor give interviews about being attacked by Zodiac and said once that He does not wan't to give this man any recognition nor be responsible for Zodiac again being given column space in the Newspapers or on the 6 O'clock News because this is what He revels in. But maybe the more inspirational statement, if you'll allow me to paraphrase from memory, He stated was: "Before Sept 27th, 69 life for me was good. I had a very happy home life, I was attending University studying for a Law Degree with aspirations of then becoming an Attorney, I had a girlfriend and life was good. After this happened to me, I did go through a period where I literally did not go through my front door because of Anxiety. I had given up my studies and abandoned my goal of becoming an Attorney and just as I was about to make this official I instantly realized that Yes, I can mope around all day everyday feeling sorry for myself wondering why and never achieve the goal that I had worked hard toward and was doing great at. All of a sudden I was over-eager to get back to studying and Uni because then He not on,y failed to take my life in a literal sense but also, He's failed to take my life in what it should have been before He stabbed me. That's the only way I can see that you beat someone like this who has tried to utterly destroy you, you show them just how miserably they have failed by becoming successful and achieving the things that He tried to make sure you never would." He only spoke on camera in 2007 because, He said, He was insulted and just fed up of hearing the rumour that people seemed to believe that was not true, this being, the claim made that Zodiac had said "You know, I am going to have to stab you people" and Bryan claimed to have replied "Well stab me first because I am chicken and cannot stand to see the girl being hurt." Bryan said this was absolute nonsense and Bryan did not say any such thing nor did Zodiac announce His intent to stab them saying He was on the ground wondering weather He'll be stuck out here all night when, He said, "I saw a flash. . . Just out of the corner of my eye. And before I knew it, I felt it in by back."

Since the killer used different weapons and/or methods every time, any thoughts that maybe this might have been a team of people rather than just one person? The Son of Sam also made reference to working in a team as did other serial killers.
I think some investigator's have theorized that the Zodiac might be at least 2 people
Zodiac was Don Harden and his wife Bettye Harden.
Unless they were alternating crimes,we have 2 witnesses that saw him.As well as 2 police officers who missed him by accident and warned him that there was a mugging and he should go home.....yep they covered that up.Until the Zodiac told them that in one of his letters.

The fact the cop didin't write down the description of his face when they saw him without the mask on is beyond obserd police work.
Some time ago I was listening to a talk radio show, and the Zodiac Killer was the topic. The guest was very knowledgeable on the topic and he mentioned something I wanted to tell you. Regarding the stabbing attacks, the guest said that through his research he discovered that the handle of the Zodiac's knife was wrapped in gauze. The gauze would provide a better grip and absorb sweat from the hand. This would then lessen the chance the Zodiac would injure himself by having his hand slip off the handle and onto the blade. Also, if his victim were to try to fight back, he would have a greater chance in not having the knife taken away from him, due to the gauze causing a better grip. I only had time to watch Part 1 of your Zodiac series when I typed this comment, so I don't know if you mentioned this detail in the other parts. Most likely, the reason he went from using a gun at the 1st murder to using knives thereafter is because of the noise ( he didn't want to attract attention; and he didn't want to get caught). This may also exclude him from being in the military or at least in a combat unit because he would have already known this (he would have used a knife in the 1st incident).

We need to look at the fact that every single victim is with a vehicle 🚗. I can't find any other case like that.We need to look at the plates,VIN and type of vehicle. I don't believe that he is picking people as much as he picked a plate or VIN.So it doesn't matter who the people are ,it's about the numbers and letters on the vehicles.Its an odd victimology because he does not care about who's in the car...just the numbers and letters I believe.Thats very terrifing because it's so random and I believe that is obvious when we look at that!This means that he checked the vehicles to be sure and if this is an odd case of random killer license plate/Vin bingo,he must have made sure in the daylight.He has some kind of OCD for sure in real life.That would have been noticed by a lot of people day to day. I really want some feed back on this theory....please!?

Just started watching this, and I'll have more to say later, but regarding Mike Mageau: You cannot count him a reliable witness any longer. That video you use, where he mentions Darlene saying, "She mentioned the name Richard..." is not a credible source video. By the time that documentary interview was conducted, Mageau's memory had been corrupted both by time/memory loss and by the influence of people putting the Gaikowski theory out there. The interviewer in that documentary is himself quite skeptical that Mageau is recalling an actual memory from July 1969. We all feel for Mageau, but he long ago ceased being a reliable witness.
I think that documentary was made for David Fincher's Zodiac. So, I don't think he was being led to the Gaikowski theory. However, considering the extent of the injuries Mageau had and probably still continues to deal with, I do agree he is not the most reliable witness.

I've been thinking about the symbol that the killer used on his outfit. It shows quite an odd similarity to the Celtic Cross's upper part. This may served as a kind of mockery of religions, particularly Christianity. Which I found the most suspicious about his appearance.

IDK what the significance might be, but I do think it's humorous that the National Socialist Black Metal band "Der Sturmer" used a drawing of the Zodiac in his outfit on one of their album covers because of his use of the symbol. In case you weren't aware, the Celtic Cross has been a popular symbol of White Nationalism since the 1990s.

If I where to put my best guess forward on the zodiac killer. It’s very possible that this is not a single person, but a group of people conspiring some sort of social breakdown. We saw during the Son of Sam murders during the eighties that actually was the case. (Which would be a great future video) The MO was similar in both cases..

The incident with the mother and daughter was not confirmed to be Zodiac, and likely was not. Research that one more.

Bryan Harnett never called for help. The Zodiac made the phone call to the police saying he had killed 2 persons, and left the tips on that and the past murders written on a car door

Edwards claims He was the Zodiac and was also the killer in the early 1980s Atlanta missing and murdered childern cases.
He claims He has killed people for over the past fourty years, plus He also claims murders and some of those cases happened while He was already in prison.
I don't think he's a credible suspect at all. The guy claims he also killed Elizabeth Short and JonBenet Ramsey, he wants people to believe he committed every popular unsolved murders in the US in he past 60 years. Ridiculous, he's not Zodiac.
When you look at His crimes on the surface or at face value it does seem so odd and not fitting either the organized nor disorganized category of killer. However, when you really just stop and think of questions such as why switch from gun to knife in the third attack, the answer really is seemingly there and obvious. If He fired shot after shot at Bryan and Cecelia then the time of day and location of the crime scene would mean He'd attract all sorts of unwanted attention of curious people in the area, most notably of which would be Park Rangers.
Also, there is the question of why would He suddenly seem to switch His MO/victim type from teenage couples in the first three attacks to 29 year old lone male in the fourth? Well, we can't say We will ever know for sure without He Himself telling us but if I was asked to bet on His most likely reason for doing this, I would place my money on the the answer being.....Because they had referred to Him in print not too long before the murder of Paul Stine as a character that has a hatred of Women, stating He'd killed the females in the previous two attacks (Berryessa and Blue Rock, Cecelia and Darlene) and didn't kill their male companions in Mike and Bryan. They said He reserved the brunt of his rage for the Women and stated they believed He may even be a latent homosexual.
Well Z being Z simply went out to show them they were again, wrong. Knowing the case as intimately as I have come to over the years I can tell anyone reading that Yes Mike and Bryan survived, but it was not because Zodiac went easy on them and more an act of God that saw both live. Mike was shot over and over again one round even hitting him directly in the face. Bryan was stabbed six times with a knife almost long enough to penetrate right through His body. How none of the six plunges hit major arteries or vital organs is again almost miraculous. But just the fact they said He hated Women and they were His targets for the majority of His rage as He may possibly be a closet gay man pissed Him off and He hints at this by saying "I have grown rather angry with the police for their telling lies about me..."

That's a good point. I also think he may have switched from gun to knife for psychological reasons---his other crimes involve essentially no interaction with his victims; he just shot them and walked away. I think that for whatever reason he wanted to prove that he could kill somebody with a knife, in a more personal manner. It may have had something to do with his fantasies, especially with regards to the Zodiac persona; perhaps the knife attack brought him closer, in his imagination, to truly being the persona he'd created in his mind.

Okay.... No, the letters from Riverside and the Bay Area are not all that alike. The Riverside letters focus on "die" and the victim, as if the killer really had honed in on Cheri Jo Bates, stalked her in a way. The Bay Area Zodiac letters almost never mention the word 'die' (in fact, might never mention the word even once), and the writer is focused almost exclusively on the cat-and-mouse fame game, and almost never on the victims. The Riverside killer almost certainly knew Bates, at least in passing recognizance, enough to get her to walk with him alone on a dark night. Zodiac stalked and attacked strangers in ambush style murders. If there is any connection at all to the Riverside-Bay Area killings, it might be that the Zodiac killer was in Riverside when Bates was killed, heard about it or saw the letter, and used it as a model. The Riverside killer is a killer; the Zodiac was a publicity hound, with the murders as an incidental--if you like--and just a way to keep his identity fresh in the headlines. He got off on the notoriety, not on the slayings. ... Of course, none of us knows for certain, and Zodiac might well have been the Riverside murderer, but to use the similarities in the letters is a stretch, since there are just as many differences as there are similarities. Zodiac didn't get all that close to his victims. The Bates murderer was up in her space, making a very personal attack. Zodiac got close to Stine, but was in the back seat, obscured. He stabbed the Berryessa kids, but in disguise, from behind. His other victims were shot, with the impersonal weapon of a firearm. My opinion: The similarities are not similar enough to link Riverside to the Bay Area. Intriguing, but nothing very solid.

What if Kane and Allen knew each other and they did different parts of the murders, or one of them were a copy cat, is it possible that they knew each other because with two murderers they wouldnt be able to get a factual facial recognition and things like that
the zodiac took the name from a Charlie Chan movie the killer killed couples and his name was zodiac in the movie the movie came out 20 years before this actually happened
Hey John, great video as always. I've been fascinated with this case since I read Robert Graysmith's book a few years ago. The David Fincher film is actually one of my favourite movies, and it's funny because it came to mind today when I watched your review of Mad Max and you were talking about CGI, which I've never been a fan of, but I genuinely didn't know there was CGI in Zodiac until I was told.
I'm intrigued to see what theories you've come up with but unfortunately I'll have to watch the other ones tomorrow.

Unfortunately, Riverside followed a false negative into the 1990's in regard to Cherry Jo Bates. Cherry Joe's ex-boyfriend, who eventually worked overseas, complicating things further. He was eventually cleared through, I think, hair and fibers, thought to be the killer's found in the victim's hand Therefore, any other leads they may have developed at the time were not followed. Including an attempted kidnapping that occurred shortly before CJB's murder similar to Kathleen Johns.
HAHAHA here is another hypotesis: Zodiac Identified: His name was Donald Gene Harden. His full identity was found hidden in the 408 cipher and Zodiac did say it was in there.The symbol that he sent (with 4 dots around it) which represents the 4 crime scenes,connects all 4 crime scene areas to Salinas Ca where he lived at the time of these crimes. He matches both sketches,with and without glasses.The # 408 ,which was the number of characters in Zodiac's first code, was also Don's area code.The 408 cipher had 54 unique symbols,Harden's address was #54 at that time in 1969.The Melvin Belli meeting address that Zodiac gave was 6726 St Vincent De Paul Thrift Shop. Harden's last 4 digits of his phone # back then were 6726 exactly. His initials DH were hidden in the bus bomb diagram's .Don's zodiac sign was Pisces, so it fits with the water theory. Don's height was in the 5 8" and 5 10" description range ,like officer Don Fouke described,Don was 5 10" with a 10 1/2 shoe like prints found at LB. Don Fouke got the best look at Zodiac.Harden was in the age range that Fouke described as 40-45. Harden was 41. He even pretended to be a hoaxer and really did call the Jim Dunbar show knowing they would dismiss him as a hoaxer for acting stupid like he didn't know what he was talking about. His wife Bettye wrote a partial confession in Robert Graysmith's Zodiac (which was a Salinas Library book) that read: I started the Zodiac case and ended it,the last half of this book is theory. When I write the true ending,it will shake the earth! Zodiac sent the 1971 Pines card with the advertisement for the new Forest Pines condominiums in Lake Tahoe. Donald Harden was in the real estate condominium business. He had ties with Lake Tahoe.

Michael Mageau, Bryan Hartnell and Cecilia Shepard are so freakin' tough to endure that agony and terror and still give police descriptions and impressions. Such a shame that Cecilia died (of course it's a shame than any of the victims died); she seemed like a very intelligent and decent person.
The envelope of the red phantom letter was matched to Zodiac. As were two other letters sent to the chronicle (sla, and so called citizen letter). Why he dropped the zodiac persona we'll probably never know. Also, I believe it was the envelopes sent to Cherry Jo Bates' father, RPD, and the local paper, that were matched to zodiac. Also the desktop poem found at RCC.

Ive looked at the cross hair symbol...One thing Ive noticed is that the circle isnt always drawn from the same start point on the cross hair. Could this cross hair be similar to the concentric circle on the poles of N. S. E and W and where the circle begins to be drawn indicates a location of significance and where the the hairs cross indicate a location of significance also. Interesting I think is Alex Lewis's theories and the FBI record that shows Kane moving around a lot! I wonder could the center of the cross hairs be his location and where the loop around the circle begins be a location of the murder? Ive not tested this theory however.

Very good video! I remember when this was current and in the news and it always seemed to me that too much was ascribed to one guy. It always had the feel that someone did some of it and someone else did some writing and it just didn't seem to completely fit. This is just my opinion, based on feelings. It seems possible to link all the clues but it still impresses me that at least two people were involved.

What I don't understand is why people say the Zodiac claimed 37 kills.. He never wrote "I killed 37 people" all he did was put me-37 sfpd-0.. We don't know what that means, and why would he be keeping track of that? Not like sfpd is going to murder people to keep up with his score.. Or if they catch him then what me-37 sfpd-1? lol.. He wouldn't even be around to put that score, so if it is a score he is keeping then it isn't about kills cause that makes no sense.

Judy Holiday The letters stopped once the (possible) connection to Cheri Jo Bates was made public. We know the 1978 letter was a hoax. Either the cops were on to something with the Bates murder and things got too hot for Zodiac, or he died. At times it does seem as though there was a copycat killer, further confusing matters. The description Officer Fouke gave doesn't match the description given by the Lake Berryessa victims. Also Mageau describes him as average height whilst the Berryessa victims (Cecilia lived for 2 days after) said he was about 6 ft tall.
He could of stopped writting or a name change perhaps there is Zodiac writtings well into the 90's.
Many have stopped, Btk, Golden State killer. Two examples.
Here is an interesting notion, what if the "zodiac" was an Mk-ultra or a variant program that ran concurrent or after ultra, overall being a psychological operation.
