I have said in other posts before but I believe that just because I am single, never married, that doesn’t mean that I’m lonely, just because I’m doing my shift at my busy local grocery store, at a concert surrounded by 60,000 people or at a packed restaurant with family or so called friends, that doesn’t mean that I’m NOT ALONE!

I do volunteering, pickleball, Zumba, If this wasn’t possible, I world do different, Zoom is excellent for classes also If you can’t get out. Good mental health is priceless, ask and you will receive. I have never had this day before but it’s a great one, and no you weren’t to wobbly gorgeous woman. ❤

Been there, done that. You can get through but don't be downhearted if you take what you feel is a backward step. Just gently accept and spend time doing things that you like to do. No problem if you flit from one thing to another - so long as you don't beat yourself up for it. Be kind to yourself. Thinking of you. D

I’m almost 74, a widow for five years and retired. My poor ignorant choices and decisions in my early years consequently led me where I am now…alone and at peace. I know longer feel the need to be with others on a regular basis. I see my family and a few friends and enjoy those moments but I’ve learned to let go because I know I’m loved and I appreciate that they are living their own lives without guilt from me. I cherish my time with them when they were young and I spent quality time with them. Now I’m just enjoying myself and doing what I want when I want and with whom I want. It was a process for me adjusting to this new way of thinking and living. I’ve since learned not to play the “guilt game” but to encourage them to live their lives and know that I want them each to be happy and healthy. It’s their time now to follow their own path and fulfill their own dreams and goals. I’m content now knowing that they love me and that they know that I love them and am always here for them.

I watch a lot of your videos Dee but I rarely comment. This one I had to. I'm not that old, I'm 49 but starting to feel age just a tiny bit. I'm alone but not lonely. I had a lot of trouble making friends as a kid. In college (university as you call it over there) I had a large group but that dispersed quickly after graduation. Ten years ago I moved out west for a new job (The US is an enormous country so that meant hundreds or thousands of miles from the nearest friends and family). Sure I speak on the phone with family and have friends I've made online but it's not the same. I think, for various reasons, I got very used to being self-reliant as a kid and seeking help from others was just never in my toolbox. When seeking help with an assignment in school, calling friends for help literally did not occur to me, that's how ingrained it was. I've come to peace with this, and the fact that I never married, I realized to stop being jealous of all my friends getting married after I realized I really didn't WANT it, I was getting jealous over something that I wouldn't have liked even if I had it. There are times when I wish to have a large real-life circle of friends that I could simply pop by their house or ask for help with an errand. I don't and that's due to my decisions which I have learned to live with. I cherish privacy and I guess I got in the end not what I "deserved" but what I truly wanted.

There seems to be pressure on people via social media to have lots of friends - with whom they are always having lots and lots of fun. Fine if that is what floats your boat, but not if you do this because you feel that you should. Many of us - and I include myself in this - prefer just a small, select group of friends - with whom we meet often as individuals.
There is no right or wrong - rather what is right for each individual, that suits your character, your preferences.
I really like your final sentence - and I thank you so much for sharing your words with us. Cherish your privacy and here's to contentment. D

Bumpy but beautiful! I joined my local community choir. No audition, you don't have to read music. You can sit or stand. Someone will give you a lift if needed. Cheap at the price. And SUCH FUN! Lovely people. It's physical, mental, spiritual and social. And from that, I joined other things - most recently line dancing!! All older folk having a laugh and some exercise. If you can step, you can do it. I'm busy most days of the week now, and have made great friends. We support each other, go for lunch etc. I also value my time alone though, either indoors or walking. Great topic, Dee. xxx You also do a lot to combat loneliness, with this community. xxx

Some great ideas thank you Dee. Loneliness is a big problem in today’s society. I returned to the Uk three years ago and as an older person it is hard to make friends in a new area. Also, personality plays a big part and if, like myself you are quieter and more introverted it is hard. I joined a walking group in my town and although it was difficult at first I now really enjoy the walking and chatting and other social events that are organised. Also, you mentioned RUclips. This is great for learning new things. At home I have been learning Spanish. It really keeps the old brain cells working.

    • @jerichonikolai
      @jerichonikolai 5 месяцев назад +1

Loneliness I think is stemming from the lack of connection we feel. Back in the day (wayyyy before I was born, my parents day and age) people used to be closer to each other physically. We could walk to each other's houses. Neighborhoods held many events that people attended. You knew your neighbors. I know most of mine only because my father has owned our property for like... over 30 years 😂. Nevertheless, people had connections. They celebrated their wins and mourned losses. Nowadays, everything is go go go, which is incredibly overstimulating even for people who can handle lots of activity.
My personality is like yours. I am drained by social interactions and need some space. I like that you have a walking group. Good exercise with the plus of socializing.
I wish people were more open and understanding of one another. It's been very hard to, even as a young person, find people who fit. To find the genuine people who just want to get to know you and spend time together. Not transactional.

Hi Dee. Great advice. My personal story is that I didn't understand most of my life why I wasn't comfortable in groups of people. It is generally perceived the norm to want to be socialising. But 2 years ago at age 58 I was diagnosed with aspergers. Introverts are in the minority. I feel its a case of being comfortable doing what you want to do. I do loads of crafts, knitting, embroidery, and I love helping with my daughter and grandchildren. There are several groups around me that people can attend if inclined. There's church groups and try bowls. For me personally I tend to avoid large groups. I once joined a walking group one morning thinking I was helping myself. But a dear old lady with all her problems latched onto me. I was a good listener to her, but I felt mentally drained when I got back to base. Also, these days, I'd advise if anyone is in receipt of esa, pips etc, be careful when joining groups, as many photos are taken these days and posted onto group Facebook pages

Thank you for such a thoughtful, encouraging and helpful video.
I have recently discovered square dancing, it is such a joy and wonderful if you find it a challenge socializing because you just get to know people through small chat while dancing - nothing to intense or invasive. I find going out for dinner with a new group ca be more like an interrogation!
Joining something you can do (activities) is much easier in regard to just getting to know folk naturally.
There is nothing eorse than going out with a group and being expected to spill your life in one sitting. No. Its uncomfortable especially if you are single because 9 times out of ten it brings up the grief of not having family and feeling like a failure because of that. When your dancing those questions can't flow as easily or when your playing cards, walking, volunteering at an animal sanctuary because your busy doing something. I say avoid intense lunches snd dinner outs!!! Or at least be prepared to say 'sorry, i dont really eant to talk sbout my private life' lol. Its s bit of a conversation stopper though!

One is very traditional and not my thing but the one I joined has a mix of ages and is so much fun and there is such support for one another and local causes too. We have had workshops on mosaic, meditation, local black history , singing, quizzes, foraging , upcycling items. We have shared lunch and there’s a book club, walking group, supper club. It’s helped my English and I’ve made friends while learning and trying new things . Thanks for talking about something that affects so many people. A lovely heartwarming message Dee. I lost 2 dear dear friends in 2020 and my daughter lives 300 miles away but I am not lonely - all the hobbies I enjoy are ones you do alone - I also have a dog Oscar to walk daily. Since the recent improvements to the esplanade it's now much safer to co-exist with cyclists and that's a big plus. It also means if the day ever comes where mobility's a problem I can get a mobility scooter and access my usual walk and further. I confess I am not good at small talk but I have been a call companion with Age UK since May 2022 and we both enjoy our weekly chats and have become firm friends. ☺️ Anyone who is stuck your tips will work big love as always from Scotland ❤

Good Morning Dee, from Alabama. I'm hoping you've had rest full nights sleep and are energized to begin your day! The time here in Huntsville is 9:40 PM 7/26/2024/ By the time this message reaches you I'll be in bed counting sheep. Green Mountain Nature Preserve, Alabama is open to the public free of charge there is no overnight camping. The cabin and covered bridge along with all of the Nature Preserves amenities and trails are available to the public to enjoy. The cabin is open for anyone who wants to step in to shelter from the rain or relax in a bit of shade from the sun while hiking the trails. The cabin was constructed from hand hewn timber in 1862 and has stood the test of time and preserved to our current time. While hiking one can simply climb it's solid stone stair way leading to a well shaded open porch with rocking chairs. The porch leads straight away through the main entrance into a large room ( large enough for a full size automobile ) with a stone fireplace, hearth and mantel straight on to the East wall. The windows are opened and allow for plenty of day light and fresh air to comfortably sit in one of two rocking chairs to read or converse with a fellow hiker. As one approaches the cabin you will see a large stone built water well allowing a thirsty hiker to top off a water canteen with fresh cool spring fed water. The cabin has well wooded acreage with a mountain spring fed lake 100 yards from the west entrance. As the gentle winding trail passes by the cabin from North to South heading South 200 yards will lead to a beautiful 18th century covered wooden bridge spanning 100 ft over a mesmerizing pond filled with all the beautiful sites one read's about in a Fairy Tail story book. Green Mountain Nature Preserve, Alabama and all of its trails and many discoveries for all ages is a beautiful mountain top slice of heaven! One day I hope you can visit and I'd be happy to send you a few photos, I'll be driving there tomorrow morning. I wish you a wonderful day and for now I'll be turning in for a good nights rest. Sarah - maybe you could begin to take gentle baby steps to find a friend or two as this sounds as if it is something you haven't done maybe. It is fine not to have lots and lots of friends, but one or two who you can trust and be content around. Take care. D

@@Cheshirelass I actually have a friend who I’ve known since childhood, but I’m not as close with her as before because she is in a relationship and is spending more time with her significant other. I am now in my senior year of high school, and over the past few years have made a few new friends. I don’t blame them for leaving me, honestly. But whenever I do feel down, I love reading. Any Charles Dickens book is great, and also Leo Tolstoy :) any classic novel, really, that intrigues me. I also love listening to the rain and I am more or less used to feeling lonely. I think the best cure when it comes to this is praying. I pray to Jesus and read the Bible, and keep my life simple, doing my best in school. That’s pretty much it. I appreciate your advice, Dee :)

@@sarahroseyang Sarah - if you were to stop having a down on yourself, and seeming to accept it as your lot, I am sure that life could become better for you. Have a think about where you put you on your list and how you could move up it. That is not being selfish I can assure you. Take care. D

@@Cheshirelass I'. , beginning to feel the same, so I understand. Perhaps local churches & senior citizen groups nearby are a start. Getting rides help from city transportation services for seniors and checking out rides for seniors who don't drive, and public rides like Uber to get places to meet new people rather than relying on a few friends, especially if they are also seniors and have limitations. Some of my friends have illnesses, don't drive, live far away, don't travel and are not very communicative or not interesting converstionalists, etc. so finding groups of other citizens provides company where you can mingle and socialize a bit.

Yes I’ve done crafting myself making potholes for my hot pots. I done wild grape vines with floral for seasonal hangs on the front doors and wood crafts hang on wall. I’ve made memories with grandkids with colorful paper doing hand prints to hang on fridge for them to see. I live in the country. I live alone my 3 kids are grown they have their own kids I’m always doing as a grandma does spending time showing them my love ❤I do exercise stretching my arms and legs I do get out my home taking walks with my nephew two lab dogs throwing sticks they will fetch for me to throw again. If I start a project I do like to finish what I started and start on something different. I’m not lazy I love getting out go look around in town I love going to thrift stores look around see what’s new. I have 1 best friend we’ve been friends since 5th in school I am 56 year’s old. She has health problems with Arthritis that draws up so I try to spend time with her. So anyways I have thanking for my blessing in my life what I do waking up every morning pray over my food. Yes the person I was texting online with Facebook we were just friends for few weeks. I end up blocking him because of lies and fake accounts. We wasn’t lover’s I’ve never met in face to face in public with him I don’t even know who he was talking to me like that. Come finding out he was doing bad spells too me and my family I didn’t never spoken to him since 9 months ago. But he has been watching me on my phone monitoring me every move I make. He’s a narcissistic person. I have let him go almost 9 months ago. I become friends of a Fan Page that post of been Henry Cavill come to finding out he were a scammer trying too get money out of me I didn’t never give no money. So you have a wonderful day 😊I love your kindness reads thank you 🙏 ❤
