I totally understand your point about bands like Darkthrone & Satyricon hving stronger earlier albums than recent releases. But i enjoy both eras of Darkthrone. The early classic/traditional black metal albums & the latter crust/punk/doom releases. F.O.A.D & Circle The Wagons are great imo. As for Satyricon there is also really great material on Volcano & The Age Of Nero.
Those albums were my gateway into BM. I found it diffucult to immediately switch from iron maiden and slayer to burzum or bathory. Those albums were a good introduction/middleground and will always have a special place in my heart.
Enslaved, Bathory, Rotting Christ, Emperor, and Immortal are my personal favorites bands. I put those bands at fantastic. Great tier list. You should rank modern day black metal next.
I am an Immortal and Darkthrone fan, but I have to check out more of Windir's stuff (loved Arntor; such a fantastic record and the fact that Valfar did that all by himself at 19 still blows my mind).
Wow, your ranking tracks pretty closely to mine, especially if I rank based on the same criteria. I came to black metal late in the game, looking for rabbit holes to dive into during the early days of the pandemic- stuff to listen to in the New England winter nights while walking our lab. After I plumbed those depths, I started educating myself about death metal, grindcore, doom and all the other microgenres because musical archeology is just all kinds of fun for me. Channels like yours have helped in that respect, so thanks for all you do!
Darkthrone's got a new album coming next month entitled Astral Fortress. As for a future tier list, you should do a metal swansong albums tier list and include the following albums: Type O Negative-Dead Again Nasum-Shift [their frontman drowned in that dreaded tsunami in Thailand two months after the release of this album] Celtic Frost-Monotheist Black Sabbath-13 Windir-Likferd [This was Windir's last album due to the frontman, Valfar, being caught in a blizzard in the Norwegian woods and freezing to death] Necrophagist-Epitaph Acid Bath-Paegan Terrorism Tactics [their bassist, Audie Pitre, along with both his parents, were killed in a car wreck by a drunk driver in early 1997] Death-Sound of Perseverance Bathory-Nordland II Entombed A.D.-Bowels of Earth Slayer-Repentless Motorhead-Bad Magic [Lemmy died a few months after the release of this album]
WRT to Rotting Christ, there’s something utterly unique and completely distinctive about their early output. I don’t know any other way to describe it than “laid back”. NOT a description you would usually use for black metal, but the melodies are amazing, the songwriting glorious, and the playing so restrained. Again, if I’m listening to black metal, “ restrained” is not an adjective I find myself searching for often! I fucking love Non Serviam, Triarchy of the Lost Lovers and A Dead Poem. There’s so much FEEL on these albums. To me, those three are all S-tier. Agree that the other stuff doesn’t quite reach the heights. BTW, don’t know if you’re into this sort of thing, but last year (?) they released an album The Early Days (Live in Studio) including material up to Triarchy. I fuckin love it, esp as there is ZERO chance I will ever actually see the real band live. Really recommend it. Also, thanks for the tip WRT Carpathian Forest! Hardly listened to them, will defo check them out some more. Any albums in particular you recommend as a jumping-off point?
I like your lists man! Just like the death metal one I have one MAJOR gripe and that's the placement of Marduk. I feel like in all of black metal they have been incredibly consistent and really jumped up a tier when they added Mortuus on vocals
I gotta say that I enjoy your rankings quite a lot, though I don't always agree with your choices. My favourites are Emperor, Satyricon, and Burzum (though I admit Varg's work is extremely "taste-sensitive") . I think it would be great if you could also rank other classic BM bands (though I agree those you've chosen are probably the most influential ones). I think that setting these against some other artists would be very interesting. I felt that Arcturus and Summoning are the particularly important ones missing on your list. Another I can think of are Impaled Nazarene , whose body of work is large and strong (and serves a great example of how indirect and counterpretensious BM can be). I believe Abigor are another great classic band that deserves a lot of attention even though their discography might seem a bit inconsistant. Throw in Enthroned as well. They're well-established, fairly consistant, and have a bunch of quite impressive releases on their account.
Love the tier lists! Mine would go something like this S: Enslaved, Marduk, Darkthrone, Windir, A: Dissection, Borknagar, Emperor, B: Mayhem, Immortal, Dark Funeral, Cradle of Filth, Rotting Christ, C: Bathory, Carpathian Forest, Dimmu Borgir, Sacramentum, Samael, Ulver, D: Burzum, Gorgoroth, Satyricon, This is assuming the tiers mean the same as to what you’ve renamed them btw.
Love the bass playing in early Gorgoroth. Really prominent and absolutely not just following a long with the guitar. Not sure Gorgoroth get the credit they deserve for how experimental they are (were) First three albums amazing and Destroyer has some awesome shit on it too. Gotta say I’m more of a Pest fan than a Ghaal fan but Ghall is also fuckin solid.
I agree, except I kinda hate gaal. I don't think people get how insane Infernus's guitar playing is. It's borderline hair metal, with enough tweaks to give it a black metal vibe, but could have easily been done incorrectly. But melody in black metal wasn't very common in early second wave, and Gorgoroth are pioneers in that regard
There's a couple bands whose work I'm not familiar enough with in order to rank but overall I think I'd rank most of these the same. I'd definitely include Emperor and Enslaved in the Perfection tier. These are a couple of my all time favorite bands ( I think Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire and Demise is an amazing album. My 2nd favorite Emperor album after Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk). Glad to see Dimmu Borgir ranked where they are at. I had a roommate who used to play the album Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia all the time, which was my introduction to the band, and from there, I got into their back catalog. Loved Death Cult Armageddon when it came out. I did start drifting away from the band around the time they In Sorte Diaboli.
I was about to get mad that you put Bathory in just great.....then I remembered Octagon exists. Having said that, you are really underrating Nordland 1 and 2.
Great video, I agree with much your points as usual. Emperor and Enslaved definitely a cut above the rest for me along with Darkthrone. Will have to check out Windir
I personally feel that the gaahl era is the weakest of the gorgoroth albums. Especially twilight of the idols. But under the sign and pentagram are absolute units of albums. Solid video bro!
Agree on some, not on others, and no strong opinion on a bunch of these. Glad you give Windir so much love on the channel, incredible band. But The Secrets of the black Arts is one of my favorite black metal albums, so I would put DF higher (though I'm not into anything after their third). Either way, good stuff, cheers.
Great video dude even though I got filled with anger when you put dark funeral that low (their my second favorite next to samael) 😂 all jokes aside great video you have a new subscriber
I agree with your outlook on Burzum but Gorgoroth should be in the great category, but that's only my personal opinion. But I mostly agree with your opinions.
I get that this ranking is controversial but I mostly agreed with it apart from putting Burzum and Dark Funeral a bit higher and probably Mayhem, Darkthrone and Marduk. I'm not sure I could put anything from this in a tier labelled "OK/Not My Thing" cos if it's half-decent black metal then it's better than that for me! As far as your perfection tier goes, it's identical to what mine would be.
Some useless thoughts. Dark Funeral - I think I'm the only person on earth who loves them lol Burzum - I think the guy who says it's dogshit and the guy who says it's amazing are both correct, it's the wildest thing Immortal - Easy choice for perfection Emperor - Easy choice for perfection Dimmu Borgir - Hell yeah, somebody who has good things to say about them haha Enslaved, Rotting Christ - I'm trying to like both of these more, I think they'll click someday. Gorgoroth, Satyricon - I have tried with both of these bands but I just find them kind of boring Darkthrone, Bathory - Some of the highest highs in the genre imo, but have some lesser outputs I think people forget about. Enjoyed the video man!
Interesting to see Satiricon on here. My own music is very much influenced by their 2000's albums. King is probably the most fun song. I would love to do a good cover of it. Dimmu Borgir aswell, love "in sorte diaboli."
Enslaved def at the top for me, I think its great that you not only included Cradle, but ranked them decently, they have some awesome work and were hated by many elitists when they first came out (more probably second album) and the elitists saw kids wearing cradle shirts. These elitists forget that we too were like 12 years old wearing Metallica shirts back in the 80s and the Maiden fans probably thought we were posers. I do personally rate Satyricon higher than this list, but I may be clinging to a few albums rather than entire discog. I was also surprised to see Carpathian included, they def are under valued. I have to say, I love the way you present everything.
Hmmm interesting channel, you should do some on other Genres od bands say Thrash, Speed/Heavy, Doom, NWOBHM, Old School Death Metal, Oi Street Punk, Hardcore Punk, Crust/Dbeat, Classic Punk Rock. For me Bathory, Dissection and Emperor are Perfection and now for Fantastic I got Marduk, Carpathian Forest, Darkthrone, Sacramentum and Immortal. Great I have Burzum, Samael, Enslaved and everything else is Good either cause I haven’t listened to as much Windir could potentially go higher but mainly cause the progression of their discography that hurts them making average not nearly as good as before or even meh all them are Good except Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir are fails for me but for Cradle I liked their Death Metal demos real good but when they tried BM, then Symphonic Goth like not for me.
"Cradle of Fitlh was for the goth girls." I remember that attitude vividly, and 1) Cradle rules and always has, and 2) Oh noooooo, women are interested in metal. How terrible! /s Solid rankings overall. I'd definitely put Dark Funeral and Satyricon higher but I can understand why they are where they are. You're also 100% right with Mayhem, I genuinely don't think they'd have the acclaim they do if it wasn't for the whole crazy story of the band's early days.
I tried a little bit but never really got into black medal so I'm going to check some of these bands out. It seems like most black metal bands have a musical sound and vocal range that they are limited to. I feel like enslaved is the one band trying new things but now with this list I'll look more into it.
There are a LOT of black metal bands out there that are doing impressive things. It's a much more versatile genre than people give it credit for. This list won't be the BEST example since we're dealing with the original wave, but from here things only get more interesting.
@@MetalTrenches Alright, I'll have to look more into it. Enslaved's new stuff is good but Windir 1184 is really good. Loving the guitar work and they have surprisingly some bass to the drums. Thanks for the recommendations.
sacramentum is top tier for me simply because of far away from the sun this album is on my top 5 bm albums of all time the album after is also good, but oc not even close
There wouldn't be any of these bands without Bathory, so top tier for sure. Burzum's first 4 albums are important in so many ways that Mayhem and Darkthrone weren't that they should always be higher and went on to influence other genres which makes Varg's output important. And, lastly the Marduk discography is really strong and has a lot to offer, not a one trick pony like Dark Funeral or some of the others on the list.
I absolutely agree .and when it comes to burzum, top tier for sure ,but it’s not politically correct to like this band these days 😉and I expected it will land on the last place XD also cradle of filth on the same tier as Bathory and Darkthrine is just a not funny joke .all the best 🤘🏻
@@lukasstarovski5084 I don't care about political correctness in music, I can separate the music from the artist. Trenches doesn't like Burzum, so he will always put them low...Ive seen enough videos to where I could have done the list for him.
Agreed. "Hvis lyset tar oss" is my all time fave black metal record. The atmosphere and the desperation in Vargs screams really sell this one for Me. Oh and apropos of nothing really, "Deathcrush" is certified hot garbage imo. And I agree with the Marduk compared to Dark Funeral. Marduk was always better, but after they replaced Legion, they really kicked it up a notch imo. Also the newer drummers compared to the old one really elevates the music
I have to say, Burzum May be very important, but everything, and I mean everything he put out is soooo boring, uninteresting, uninspired and just uugh, maybe it was groundbreaking back in the 90s but nowadays, there’s so much better stuff you can listen to
Personally speaking I think Burzum has a stronger discography than Carpathian Forest and Mayhem but other than that I wouldn't change the list too much. I quite enjoy Dark Funeral, especially Diabolis Interium but they are a bit hit and miss.
I've seen a bunch of your videos and would enjoy these rankings more if you talked less about the trolls typing in the comment section and this being "just your opinion". We know. You repeat this multiple times in most of your videos. Apart from that, great stuff! I disagree with much of the ranking, but fun to hear your reasoning for it.
10:10 Uh oh, the closed captioning thinks you said the n-word, let’s hope you don’t get cancelled over this! Personally, I prefer black metal from the 00s and 10s. I’ve really only given four bands from the list a fair listen. Emperor is in my top 5 favorite bands (Anthems is my favorite album of all time), Ulver is solid, and Cradle of Filth and Borknagar are decent. Dani Filth might be my favorite lyricist, the music is hit or miss though. Borknagar hasn’t really stuck out to me, maybe I should relisten to them.
@@MetalTrenches Thanks for the response, my friend! Glad to see friendly discussions about music. Life without laughter and music would be meaningless! Cheers and good day!
I'm not a huge listmaker but this one looks fun! Gonna modify the tiers just slight because I'm a rapscallion Fantastic (total warm fuzzies): Windir (seriously one of the greats), Ulver, Enslaved, Samael Great: Immortal, Bathory (who did sadly release some real duds in the 90s), Rotting Christ, Ihsahn's solo career (which I love better than Emperor), Darkthrone Good: Satyricon, Borknagar, Dissection, Sacramentum, Dark Funeral (kinda meh after their first two albums) Meh / Don't care about 'em anymore: Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Carpathian Forest, Marduk, Mayhem Fuck Varg: Burzum. While I can appreciate the influence of Burzum and Varg's unique take on metal, he's such a garbage person that I will never waste another second of my life listening to any of his output. There's far too much good music made by non garbage humans to hear instead.
@@MetalTrenches I did think that to be fair, there's so many bands that ain't on there but you have done the early 2nd wave, I actually prefer darkthrones soulside journey over the black metal albums, but like you say it's only my opinion, people would disagree... keep up the great content mate 🤘🏻
- I haven't spent much time with Enslaved and Dissection so all I can say is fair. I like their albums but haven't listened to everything yet. - I agree with Mayhem, I honestly don't really enjoy the albums with Attila on them, When I listen to Mayhem I throw on either Maniac or Dead. - I don't listen to bathory much. - Fair for Marduk, I only listen to legion era Marduk. I really like Marduk but I don't reach for them first, fair assessment. - I heavily disagree with Burzum's ranking. I love all his albums to be honest. His early black metal is 10/10, later is still decent and I will play Fallen and Umkiptar all the way through. His synth stuff is great too, It's simplistic without being boring and I love that about his synth albums specifically, they're great background tracks and I'm glad I have physical versions of them. I would rank perfect. - Darkthrone review is fair. I like the later albums but the middle is less listened by me. I really like FOAD and Circle the Wagons though. Fair assessment. - I love Gorgoroth, Instinctus Bestialis is only brought down by the vocalist, the music is fine. Quantos is a great album, I love that one. Gaahl albums are great but not as good as Pest and Hat in my opinion but I do really like them. I would put higher. - I agree with immortal. They're very consistent. - For Satryicon they have some good songs on later albums but far from the first thing I grab, I go for their earlier stuff first. - I don't listen to the next two. - Disagree with Dark Funeral. I think the first Vocalist Caligula is fantastic and all his albums are great. I haven't listened to the new albums though but I would put them higher. - Dimmu is good until Abrahadabra. In Sorte Diaboli is a fantastic evolution of their sound and I feel like they threw it away after that record. All their early stuff is great. Enthrone Darkness is genuinely great black metal. - Cradle of Filth is my favorite band. No bad album in my opinion. Albums up until Bitter Suites to Succubi is 10/10 for me. Their new stuff is 9/10, Hammer to Existence is Futile are fantastic. All their other albums are great and I listen to them all and love them, only mid album for me would be Damnation and a Day but far from terrible. perfect band in my opinion. - I don't listen to rotting christ - I agree with Emperor - I don't listen to the next two - I only listen to 2 Ulver albums, they're great albums but I don't listen to their other stuff at all. I would put them lower even though the 2 albums I listen to are near 10/10 just because the rest of their discography - I don't listen to the last band.
I wouldn't base my impressions on what people on Diskord say if I were you. lots of impressionable kids there that side with you just cause you are an admin and you have a youtube channel.
Hey man, I know this has nothing to do with the content of this video or another but I wanted to make you notice, that when you ask people to rank an album, or a band, the most part of the votes go to the middle tier, so B tier and this is not the best way to get the general thought. You could maybe give the choice between S, A, C and D only, to see if most people like or dislike the objekt. Or simply put "Impressed" or "Disappointed"... Otherwise I really like your content and you are currently he only one who makes me discover bands and albums, so big thank you
I just finished to watch this video, I'll try again to listen to black metal. Which albums would you recommand for the S bands here? ( One album per band?)
Emperor is the kind of band I have an emotional connection to because they were the first BM act I listened to back then in 1996. I love Burzum's debut and Aske EP, but I can't stand the rest of their discography. Mayhem has 3 masterpieces: DMDS, DeathCrush and Chimera, the other albums are meh. Enslaved 90's releases are pure gold. The absolute kings of Prog Black. Immortal is pure comedy, but all of their albums are amazing. Windir is brilliant and Rotting Christ is amazing (Theogonia is the creative pinnacle of this band imo). This list is good and pretty courageous (get ready for the Burzum fanboys😆), but I would never put the mighty Bathory below Perfection tier.
Dark Funeral. The Dominator. Nuff said. Drummer makes or breaks a band, and in the case of black metal nobody is even close. I just don’t see how the rawness (and sometimes sloppiness) of some Immortal albums even compare. And I love Immortal. Also I’m in your camp with the opinion that the Gaahl era of Gorgoroth is really good, that era alone should at least put them in Fantastic tier, they’ve proven to be as melodic but more aggressive than Dimmu Borgir and Dissection. Anyway there’s no right or wrong opinion on this. This is just my two cents
One question: where's all great finnish bands? Archgoat, Beherit, Behexen, Black Crucifiction, Horna, Impaled Nazarene, Sargeist, Satanic Warmaster etc.
Remember Varg is a bad man and must always be placed bottom of any listing lol. That's what it feels like sometimes and many of his albums are way better than Mayhem's output - and I like Mayhem lol.
I love Death and Thrash Metals, but I was a youngster who Lived in Tampa when those scenes began, so that is no surprise. I like a lot of the new "progressive Metal" or what I assume is that, like Meshuggah and Gojira. But for some reason I can't get into Black Metal which surprises me because it has all of the elements needed for metal. Maybe it's the fact that it reminds me of those awful Twilight movies which I hate but I do love the "Exorcist" and "Evil Dead" movies. There is a certain corniness to Black Metal that is different than the usual corniness of Metal. But that is why art is a matter of taste and one genre or type of music is never "better" than another one. Forgive me for intruding or what I believe is called "trolling". Black Metal on my friends!!!
Gorgoroth is my favorite black metal band, and I have almost the exact opposite opinion as you lol. Love their first 3 albums, Destroyer comes up short but has some bangers on it. Incepit is decent, but overall I hate Gaal era Gorgoroth and think he's the second weakest vocalist. Quantos is a masterpiece, and Instinctus has the weakest vocalist (or at the very least, weakest vocal performance), but really stellar guitar work. If it had Pest or someone else good on the vocals, it would be a masterpiece as well. But whatever, opinions and assholes and what not, im not mad at a simple difference in taste of music
For Gorgoroth, what's your opinion on Quantos Possunt ad Satanitatem Trahunt? I think it's the best album by them and leagues better than any Gaahl era stuff. Also I know there's no objectivity but are you seriously saying you liked Destroyer?lol
Interesting list, only got into Black Metal in the past couple years but Marduk would top the lot for me, not a weak album and their militaristic sound makes them stand out. Gorgoroth, Venom and Inquisition (surprised they are not in there) come after but never delved into Enslaved, Dark Funeral and many others here so a journey awaits me.
Inquisition got some great albums. I often don't think of them in the "classic" category, but they've definitely been around a long time. I probably should.
I've only bought one album of enslaved, Utgard I think it was? I have to say I hate that album and regret spending 13 dollars on it. While their were some good songs on it, most to me just weren't interesting, and some of it was down right boring. I'll give their earlier stuff a try. But if it sounds anything like that album I listened to, I'm not going to like it either.
Their other music sounds nothing like Utgard. You jumped in on a weird one. They have so many different eras of their sound, so you really have to listen to a few of their albums before getting a sense of it all.
I think my favorite period of Enslaved is the trio of albums they released in early-mid 00s: Below the Lights, Isa and Ruun. Those albums have my favorite elements of Enslaved - nice blend between black-, viking and progressive elements.
Rotting christ has one of my favorite black metal discographies. They definitely aren't pure black metal anymore though. They're like....idk I dint have a word for it really lol.
I've been a death metal fan going on 15yrs. But never listened to black metal untill late last year. Most I've discovered I've loved or liked some were kinda meh or not to my taste. One of my favourites is 1914 Where Fear and Weapons meet is great.
@@Matacuri_666 they went dark ambient after awhile. They’ve done black metal shows also, but they were incredibly influential to the guys in bands such as Immortal. War metal’s origin was like that of none other
I personally cant stand Gaahl, my personal favorite vocalist for Gorgoroth is Pest, i dont remember the dudes name but they did have a singer who made them sound more like a blackened deathcore band lol. Immortal is great, but i feel Abbath has surpassed them on his own. Dark Funeral is my favorite band so i'll always put them under perfection lol. Not a Cradle fan, cant stand the vocal style of "lets screech as high pitched as possible and then drop to a sudden deep growl". Carpathian Forest did a really good remake of In League With Satan.
I keep telling people, try the new Cradle albums if you haven’t . I have been pretty surprised at how good they’ve gotten. He really doesn’t screech as much and it’s riff city
Just to compare your ranking to a more "objective" one, here is the ranking of Farvann based on the comments of 400 fans who gave their favorite black metal albums. He ranked the bands according to how many times they got mentionned in this album ranking. Bands with strong albums but medium disography could be advantaged in this system though: 10- Satyricon 9- Dissection 8- Bathory 7- Mgla 6- Emperor 5- Immortal (interestingly has no album in the top 10) 4- Mayhem (fuck it) 3- Marduk (hell yeah) 2- Burzum (fuck it) 1- Darkthrone I think you´re a bit biased on Dimmu Borgir (positively) and Marduk (negatively) in regard to this ranking. I personnally don´t like Dimmu Borgir and love almost everything about Marduk, but that´s my biased point of view ;-)
I'm for sure a bigger Dimmu Borgir fan than a lot of the so called "kvlt" black metal fans lol. Interesting to see Darkthrone at number 1. I still think Burzum is SO overrated, especially considering the full scope of their discography, and to me not having Enslaved on there is an absolute crime. Polling it always interesting, but more often than not I feel like it turns into more of a name-recognition popularity contest as opposed to an objective ranking.
he has some fantastic songs (some of my personal BM favorites), but jeez the guy himself and some of the song names make him easily S tier on a BM cringe list. He made my favorite Dungeonsynth track, tho.

S: Enslaved, Marduk, Darkthrone, Windir,
A: Dissection, Borknagar, Emperor,
B: Mayhem, Immortal, Dark Funeral, Cradle of Filth, Rotting Christ,
C: Bathory, Carpathian Forest, Dimmu Borgir, Sacramentum, Samael, Ulver,
D: Burzum, Gorgoroth, Satyricon,
This is assuming the tiers mean the same as to what you’ve renamed them btw.
berzum is the real black metal the bro was burning churche
@@samuelchartrain4491 that's like saying cannibal corpse isn't true death metal cuz they don't actually murder and torture people
Why bathory so low?
Darkthrone is my fav. The whole discography.
Emperor, Enslaved, and Windir at the top where they belong. Kings.
You know it
Love the bass playing in early Gorgoroth.
I agree Gorgoroth is super underrated. The bass on the song “Gorgoroth” makes it probably my favorite black metal song
De Mysteris being overrated is off base in my opinion. Their discography is very uneven, but that album and Live in Leipzig are excellent.
Love this channel and rankings. Keep up the good work. Im more of a first wave BM guy. But for '2nd wave' I would put Mayhem higher..
Nice tier list, everyone got their own mind on what they like or not but its quite accurate for me. (Except for Burzum) :D
Cheers
Thank you for putting Rotting Christ at the fantastic category! Keep up the good work, a Greek viewer of your channel 🤘🤘
Cheers 🤘🏻
What are your favorite songs by Rotting Christ? Top 15 or 10 if you don't mind
I was about to get mad that you put Bathory in just great.....then I remembered Octagon exists. Having said that, you are really underrating Nordland 1 and 2.
The vocals on those Nordland albums are ROUGH imo. I have trouble getting through them for that reason.
Thanks
Enslaved, Windir and Dissection are not only some of my favorite bands in all Black Metal but some of my favorite bands in general.
Word. And Opeth 🤘
Word. And Opeth 🤘
Welcome 🤘🏻
Hard disagree on burzum, those first 4 albums are untouchable. Rest I agree with
Emperor in the Perfection tier. You passed the test!
🙏🏻
Good list. My personal favorites are burzum, mayhem, darkthrone, satyricon and ulver
Windir is my favourite black metal band, amazing stuff
Dark Funeral - I think I'm the only person on earth who loves them lol
Burzum - I think the guy who says it's dogshit and the guy who says it's amazing are both correct, it's the wildest thing
Immortal - Easy choice for perfection
Emperor - Easy choice for perfection
Dimmu Borgir - Hell yeah, somebody who has good things to say about them haha
Enslaved, Rotting Christ - I'm trying to like both of these more, I think they'll click someday.
Gorgoroth, Satyricon - I have tried with both of these bands but I just find them kind of boring
Darkthrone, Bathory - Some of the highest highs in the genre imo, but have some lesser outputs I think people forget about.
Enjoyed the video man!
lol that Burzum take is great
I might love Dark Funeral more than you.. They’re my fav black metal band
Quest For Metal would not be happy with this list
Always happy to trigger Questy XD
@@MetalTrenches Sees dimmu higher than darkthrone and burzum. Confused unga bunga noises 🧌
Thanks 🤘🏻
We’ve done some of those. We recently did a live thrash list by audience vote
"Cradle of Fitlh was for the goth girls." I remember that attitude vividly, and 1) Cradle rules and always has, and 2) Oh noooooo, women are interested in metal. How terrible! /s
Solid rankings overall. I'd definitely put Dark Funeral and Satyricon higher but I can understand why they are where they are. You're also 100% right with Mayhem, I genuinely don't think they'd have the acclaim they do if it wasn't for the whole crazy story of the band's early days.
I know plenty of women who enjoy metal 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for the recommendations.
sacramentum is top tier for me simply because of far away from the sun
this album is on my top 5 bm albums of all time
the album after is also good, but oc not even close
Great album, but I rank on the overall quality of the discography
I really liked your opinion on the bands. Good video.
I saw Rotting Christ and Borknagar earlier this year, and I love them 🤘🖤🤘
I've seen a bunch of your videos and would enjoy these rankings more if you talked less about the trolls typing in the comment section and this being "just your opinion". We know. You repeat this multiple times in most of your videos.
Apart from that, great stuff! I disagree with much of the ranking, but fun to hear your reasoning for it.
I do that for any new viewers (as there are always a lot), I could see how it might be much for binging multiple videos
S: Darkthrone, Bathory, Emperor, Marduk
A: Mayhem, Enslaved, Dissection
B: Satyricon, Immortal, Gorgoroth,
Burzum
C: Carpathian Forest, CoF, Dimmu Borgir, Samael, Rotting Christ
D: Dark Funeral, Sacramentum, Borknagar, Ulver
10:10 Uh oh, the closed captioning thinks you said the n-word, let’s hope you don’t get cancelled over this!
Personally, I prefer black metal from the 00s and 10s. I’ve really only given four bands from the list a fair listen. Emperor is in my top 5 favorite bands (Anthems is my favorite album of all time), Ulver is solid, and Cradle of Filth and Borknagar are decent. Dani Filth might be my favorite lyricist, the music is hit or miss though. Borknagar hasn’t really stuck out to me, maybe I should relisten to them.
XD WOW lol that's so messed up. I would dispute of course if it got flagged. Pretty wild AI mistake there.
Top 3: Bathory- Blood fire death, Mayhem- live in leipzig, Darkthrone - blaze in the northern sky.
Thanks for the Dimmu love. ICS and Mustis got us all into BM guys, don't lie!
What's your feelings on Old Man's Child?
Solid band
@@MetalTrenches Thanks for the response, my friend!
Glad to see friendly discussions about music. Life without laughter and music would be meaningless!
Cheers and good day!
Fun video....cheers!
Great video! I would also include Aeternus at Great. Later output no so good, but had several solid albums in the 90s
I'm not a huge listmaker but this one looks fun! Gonna modify the tiers just slight because I'm a rapscallion
Fantastic (total warm fuzzies): Windir (seriously one of the greats), Ulver, Enslaved, Samael
Great: Immortal, Bathory (who did sadly release some real duds in the 90s), Rotting Christ, Ihsahn's solo career (which I love better than Emperor), Darkthrone
Good: Satyricon, Borknagar, Dissection, Sacramentum, Dark Funeral (kinda meh after their first two albums)
Meh / Don't care about 'em anymore: Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Carpathian Forest, Marduk, Mayhem
Fuck Varg: Burzum. While I can appreciate the influence of Burzum and Varg's unique take on metal, he's such a garbage person that I will never waste another second of my life listening to any of his output. There's far too much good music made by non garbage humans to hear instead.
What are your favorite songs by Rotting Christ? Top 15 or 10 if you don't mind
Great ranking.
Inquisition is probably my favorite black metal band.
Great albums
Where is watain? Some great bands though, Marduk, dissection personal favourites of mine, great video though 🤘🏻
Watain didn't really get in the mix until a bit later, although the same could be argued for Windir
I love Emperor’s first album but I don’t get the love for their second. I just can’t get into it.
Great to see Rotting Christ acknowledged!
totally agree with your Burzum pick for me personally i dont see Varg as some god tier musician but thats just my take
- I haven't spent much time with Enslaved and Dissection so all I can say is fair.
- I don't listen to rotting christ
- I agree with Emperor
- I don't listen to the next two
- I only listen to 2 Ulver albums, they're great albums but I don't listen to their other stuff at all. I would put them lower even though the 2 albums I listen to are near 10/10 just because the rest of their discography
- I don't listen to the last band.
Time to listen to some Enslaved I say
I've grown to like Burzum but I understand why you may not like him
Id literally flip your list around but thats okay
What hurts me the most is not seeing Dark Funeral in the “okay/not my thing” category, but next to Burzum. 😆
Dang I really only heard music of bathory, burzum, venom, mayhem, cradle of Filth, and enslaved. I would probably check out dimmu borgir
I wouldn't base my impressions on what people on Diskord say if I were you. lots of impressionable kids there that side with you just cause you are an admin and you have a youtube channel.
I'm not. I listen to what they have to say, but I've listened to basically every album from all of these bands at this point.
I think a tier list on DSBM would be interesting but that’s just me
Hey man, I know this has nothing to do with the content of this video or another but I wanted to make you notice, that when you ask people to rank an album, or a band, the most part of the votes go to the middle tier, so B tier and this is not the best way to get the general thought. You could maybe give the choice between S, A, C and D only, to see if most people like or dislike the objekt. Or simply put "Impressed" or "Disappointed"...
Otherwise I really like your content and you are currently he only one who makes me discover bands and albums, so big thank you
Interesting idea. I kind of try mixing up multiple choice and Yes-No questions
My favorite black metal bands are satanic warmaster, Dimmu borgir, and dark funeral also enjoy some gorgoroth and Marduk
What are your favorite songs by Satanic Warmaster? Top 15 or 10 if you don't mind
Should have dropped Dimmu Borgir and put in Mutiilation probably the most well known french outfit
One question: where's all great finnish bands? Archgoat, Beherit, Behexen, Black Crucifiction, Horna, Impaled Nazarene, Sargeist, Satanic Warmaster etc.
Mayhem might be my favourite band... But I get and respect your opinion
To me Darkthrone is perfect.
The burzum placing.... What are you doing, my god man.... I'm severely disappointed.
Remember Varg is a bad man and must always be placed bottom of any listing lol. That's what it feels like sometimes and many of his albums are way better than Mayhem's output - and I like Mayhem lol.
Agreed, I'm sick of it.
Not sure why OLD MANS CHILD is left off but, they belong at Excellent. Not one bad record and we'll have a new one soon
I'd have Bathory at Perfection and Darkthrone+ Dark Funeral higher. Dimmu, COF much more down imo
Black Metal on my friends!!!
mayhem is top. only for their discography.
I guess Watain is a bit too new for this list. Their new album is definitely going to end in my top 5 of 2022 unless something crazy happens.
For Gorgoroth, what's your opinion on Quantos Possunt ad Satanitatem Trahunt? I think it's the best album by them and leagues better than any Gaahl era stuff. Also I know there's no objectivity but are you seriously saying you liked Destroyer?lol
Bleached bones by Marduk is my favorite love song
S-Tier: Naglfar.
Black metal with a good production!? Yes, handle it. Check out Harvest, amazing album.
Marduk? Mid? Whaaaaat? Okay come on. They're great ❤
Interesting list, only got into Black Metal in the past couple years but Marduk would top the lot for me, not a weak album and their militaristic sound makes them stand out.
All Hail Jon King of Dissection and Father of Melodic/Symphonic 🤘👿🤘
@@jasonep2 black, viking AND progressive? Sounds like my cup of tea. I think I'll check those albums out right now.
@@capicityforgood258 hope you like them.

What are your favorite songs by Rotting Christ? Top 15 or 10 if you don't mind
I've been a death metal fan going on 15yrs. But never listened to black metal untill late last year. Most I've discovered I've loved or liked some were kinda meh or not to my taste. One of my favourites is 1914 Where Fear and Weapons meet is great.

immortal with abbath amazing darkthrone amazing gorgoroth ok early gorgoroth amazing Borknagar amazing early enslaved amazing 🤘👍🙂

They go back that far
What are your favorite songs by Dark Fortress? Top 15 or 10 if you don't mind
Engaged for the algorithm
Where would you have ranked Sarcofago?
Blasphemy, Beherit, and Sarcofago should’ve been on this list
Why beherit? They still black metal
Bands with strong albums but medium disography could be advantaged in this system though:
10- Satyricon
9- Dissection
8- Bathory
7- Mgla
6- Emperor
5- Immortal (interestingly has no album in the top 10)
4- Mayhem (fuck it)
3- Marduk (hell yeah)
2- Burzum (fuck it)
1- Darkthrone
I think you´re a bit biased on Dimmu Borgir (positively) and Marduk (negatively) in regard to this ranking.
Dissection has some bitchin riffs
i feel like Nargaroth might be the most underrated band ever!
he has some fantastic songs (some of my personal BM favorites), but jeez the guy himself and some of the song names make him easily S tier on a BM cringe list. He made my favorite Dungeonsynth track, tho.
