@GTS Actually against most guys, Roddick's way was sound, that's why he was in the Quarter finals in the first place. The thing is you just can't go to the net after each point no matter how good you are against Nadal, he will always get some from you(Federer is a prime example), also when Roddick rallied he stayed behind and waited for errors but the only thing he got was forehand winners from Nadal, again this strategy works, just not against Nadal.
Trent Timoy You should never volley back at anyone, not just Nadal, unless you’re both at the net and you’re trying to hit your opponent. Roddick so humble in defeat, wishing good luck to Rafa. Such a great guy, and one of those special and unique players, with the best serve in history for me.
Roddick's baseline game actually deteriorated post 2005, after which he was seemingly incapable of hitting clean winners off the ground and his forehand, which was probably one of the biggest in the early 2000's, lost a lot of depth and potency. He became so serve-dependent throughout the latter part of his career, and led to maulings like this against elite players who could completely expose his harmlesslness off the ground and lack of any real variety.
Power doesn’t just happen. A player can lose pace. Roddick was a very physical player and he was a pretty big guy. 200 pounds running on hard courts for 12 years takes its toll.
also during the big 3 era a much stronger baseline centric play style was developed, everyone was much stronger at baseline, Roddick in comparison couldn't keep up

@Rebeca Linares You are right. Roddick was not the same player in 2004 at age 22 than in 2003 at age 21. Roddick style is serve and volley and he isn't patient behind the line. Instead of Nadal totaly different style. I think Roddick didn't prepare himself physically. To beat Nadal you must have a good physic condition and change the style of the game during the match.
joydivsion77 The way you say it it seems like somebody gave this serve to him. He worked hard and practiced a lot to serve like that, its the same as saying "If Federer didnt have his forehand" its nonsense so respect the man
Rodrigo 2 Yes, the serve is genetic. If you could 'work hard to get the serve', every player on tour would be dropping 145mph bombs on every first serve. I stand by my statement...btw I give Roddick all the respect in the world; I don't think he was particularly talented, and yet he was a perennial top 10 player for YEARS. You can't knock that.
Roddick was almost retired at that point (1 year prior to his official retirement actually), injuries at the beginning of the year didn't allow him to move anymore or to have a descent baseline, so yeah that serve and volley strategy was basically a desperate move. You can check 2010 season and in the two matches they had (which both were very closed) there were good baseline rallies
Anybody else find themselves thinking "What the HELL?" when it came to Roddick's strategic choices? Seems that he often hit the ball exactly where he shouldn't have.
I'd really love to know what Rafa had for breakfast that very morning. Man was unstoppable, felt like he could've played the last two sets and still beaten Roddick 6-1 6-1, just scary.
Maybe Roddick was destroyed so badly Nadal figured there was no other reason than that he was injured, despite it being Roddick's inability to work around Nadal's gameplan?
@Rajeev Shrivastava I will concede that he did get an injury a couple months before, so it is possible that he either wasn't fully recovered from it or re-injured it playing after only a couple weeks.
aburg10s terms of scoreline, this is. But Fed absolutely made him look like a fool in that match. Fed 07, because no one expected Roddick to even push nadal here.

A very hard match for Rafa. Damn, Roddick was slower than a slug, haha! This was one of Federers hardest opponents from 2003 til 2006. Now its clear, why Roger have so many slamwins in this years, haha. Roddicks style shows the american spirit, pure violence without using brain.

Clearly Roddick was outclassed in this match but he took this beating like a classy guy and simply congratulated the opponent. I am sure it is painful to experience a humiliating defeat like this in front of a large crowd but he made no excuses and threw no tantrums like so many others might have done.
Only Djokovic was able to face Nadal in this Us Open 2011,this level of tennis that both Nadal and Djokovic play is out of this world,I felt bad for Roddick in this match...
Djokovic beat Nadal in 4 and was 2 match points down versus Fed. It's just the big 3 that were dominating this tournament once again, not solely Nadal and Djokovic.
Seems like Roddick didn't have the legs to rally from the back, as he played a tough 4 setter the day before..so he took a big risk going to net often to shorten the points and that is dangerous against the speed, power and precision passing of Rafa..!
I would avoid going to the net against Rafa unless you are sure of winning the point. His passing shots are the best and can be played from the most awkward positions

Roddick really did deserve the Wimby title that day. Best I ever seen him play. I did feel sorry for him.
Roddick 5-4 Djokovic haha
i don't know you can tell roddic's game is not very polished. he has a big serve but then he lacks the finese to finish it over the net...
Roddick style is serve and volley and he isn't patient behind the line. Instead of Nadal totaly different style. I think Roddick didn't prepare himself physically. To beat Nadal you must have a good physic condition and change the style of the game during the match.
I think Nadal remembered 2004 US Open....
Omg Nadal was insane here!
Gracias por la lección . Cuanto es ? Puedo pagar con tarjeta de crédito? 😏
I think this was one of the matches that persuaded Roddick to retire, even though he wasn’t yet 30.
First point was best point all match at net from roddick
Without his serve, Roddick wouldn't have been in the top 50.
joydivsion77 The way you say it it seems like somebody gave this serve to him.
You can't knock that.
joydivsion77 ok man, I disagree with you but I respect your opinion
joydivsion77 exactly I'm surprised his even in the top 50
top 1000
Roddick was almost retired at that point (1 year prior to his official retirement actually), injuries at the beginning of the year didn't allow him to move anymore or to have a descent baseline, so yeah that serve and volley strategy was basically a desperate move.
You can check 2010 season and in the two matches they had (which both were very closed) there were good baseline rallies
Insane passing shots by Nadal whenever Roddick came to the net! Why couldn't he see that his approach shots weren't got enough to go to the net?
No one dislikes how Nadal typically plays more than me. But i love the way he plays here.
Anybody else find themselves thinking "What the HELL?" when it came to Roddick's strategic choices? Seems that he often hit the ball exactly where he shouldn't have.
9:26 😲 what an unbelievable volley
Damn, Rafa! I remembered when he could barely win a game against Andy. What a ways he came! Roddick had no answers for Nadal.
I'd really love to know what Rafa had for breakfast that very morning. Man was unstoppable, felt like he could've played the last two sets and still beaten Roddick 6-1 6-1, just scary.
Roddick's volley has never been good, and Nadal's passing shots are among the best ones in history. Definitely not well planned by Andy.
Well he was injured here and actually beat Nadal a season before with serve and volley.
Roddick's volleys were junk. Many of the volleys in this highlight were above-net volleys that should have been put away.
Why nobody mentions that Andy was injured, why else Rafa would ask him "How are you"
Maybe Roddick was destroyed so badly Nadal figured there was no other reason than that he was injured, despite it being Roddick's inability to work around Nadal's gameplan?
@Rajeev Shrivastava Which makes it no less valid than the idea that Roddick was injured, because as far as I can tell he wasn't.
@Rajeev Shrivastava I will concede that he did get an injury a couple months before, so it is possible that he either wasn't fully recovered from it or re-injured it playing after only a couple weeks.
So which was more humiiliating for Andy, this loss or vs. Fed in '07 AO?
Definitely 2007, Roddick was still a solid Top 5 player back then. In 2011 he was already in decline
Yeah I remember the anticipation of that match. MacEnore was like "I think Andy has a good shot." lol
"I feel like the gap is closing"
aburg10s terms of scoreline, this is. But Fed absolutely made him look like a fool in that match. Fed 07, because no one expected Roddick to even push nadal here.
I know a lot of people here are making fun of Roddick. But every player has had to endure this. Let's remind ourselves of how Nadal got decimated in the 2019 AO final. He was made to look like a novice by Djokovic in the finals - and this coming from a hardcore Nadal fan.
Tennis19999 du hast keine Ahnung
Dude u and your comrades with your weak era Nonsense... This guy retired next year aka 2012. He was already on his last legs. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying Roddick is winning with this Version of Nadal even in his prime (2004-2005) nope... But no reason to trash him
@@paranoid_android6702 Nonsense?Roddick was the best player fedderer was facing.Speaks a lot.
@@aleksamilosevic8792 no he wasn't.. Nadal was. Roddick was best only in Wimbledon. In AO it was Hewitt and Safin, in USO Agassi and Hewitt.
Basically only weak year Federer had was 2006. Agassi got too old to compete, Hewitt struggling with Injuries AND Roddick changing his forehand technique and becoming a shadow of himself.
Speaks a lot? On what? On basis of this match, he is close to retiring here.
@@paranoid_android6702 2005 saffin won AO then started to get non stop injured on top of being lazy.Fedderer couldnt beat 19 year old rafa on clay in his called ``insane prime``.Hewiit being close to nadal or djokovic or even murray is a joke.
Roddick: So much power, so little idea how to use it.
In Andy roddicks podcast about nadal Indian wells, this forehand at 2:08 was what he was talking about 😂
all roddick has his serve, but nadal returns every single one of them. Tough one.
He's got a huge serve...but it seems pretty easy for the top guys to get back...Does it lack spin, placement? I remember players like Becker, Goran would serve like 2,000 aces a game... Even Sampras would get like 1,000. Why so few aces these days? Took power off the ball?
Not one of Roddick's finest matches....
Roddick had no idea how to play Nadal, which was weird because he beat Nadal at Miami and was close in beating him at the WTF the year before.
WOW. Total different players from 2004 to 2011.
When Andy makes his first serve I hear a shotgun sound! :)
A great server like Roddick had such a hard time holding serve. Nadal does that to a lot of people.
Seeing Nadal stand so close by his standards against a powerhouse server creeps me out. Now he needs to buy a first row ticket because of how far he stands.
It is amazing to think this level of Rafa was beaten by Nole in the final.
5:34 the point everyone came to see
Man what happened to roddicks forehand, it used to be such a weapon
Come on rush to the net on his forehand Roddick xd
What round was this?
QTR got it
نجمي المفضل " نادال " الماتادور الأسباني 🇪🇸🇸🇦
There is legend, Roddic is still going to the net nowadays
Qué paliza le dió Nadal a Roddick, en su superficie y estadio favorito. Con su público. El rey del saque y volea fue humillado ganando sólo 6 juegos en 3 sets 😱.
2011 Nadal on his peak in 25 yo. 25 Yo is the peak of almost every excellent tennis players and footballers ,you name it, Messi 91 scores in 25, Maradona won 1986 World Cup in 25, Federer almost unbeatable in 2006 when he’s 25, nova winning streak in 25,………
I remember watching this match saying nadal totally destroys Roddick. Roddick had no pace on his forehands
The Djoker gave this Nadal a beatdown in the final that year, crazy!
1:48 HOME RUN!
Damn Roddick's Volleys were Dogshit even towards the end of his career ...
Good sportsmanship from Roddick as always.
andy Roddick is not an easy oponent he has one of the fastest serves
Rafa on a completely different tier.
