I told my wife after 2016 Rafa was finished. Being the supreme fortune teller I am all he’s done is won one AO , 2 US Opens and 5 French opens and multiple tournaments since then. I need a new career.
Nadal was in his excellent form for this US Open 2017. Hoping for a repeat in 2018. The one's he played in 4 sets, Nadal was thinking: OK you can have this first set, I'll just finish you off in the next three sets.

Don't know what happens to Delpo,he wins first set, then loses 2nd 6-0. He's done that in the Davis cup too against Rafa. 11:01 Rafa's speed to the net on that point is incredible! 31 years old & still that fast is awesome!
Tennis experts have calculated that Rafa missed 3 years of GS tournaments, 12 titles, through injury. And yet he stayed neck and neck with Djoko, until 2023, when yet again injury forced him to withdraw from R Garros. My guess is he wd have won it, if he'd been fit (considering he has won it at least twice when he was not 100% healthy). Neither Fed or Djoko have missed that number of GS tournaments. And again, numerous pundits have said how different things wd have undoubtedly been if 2 of the GS were played on clay, instead of 2 on hardcourts. Same for end of year championships. Why are they always played indoors? I don't need to make excuses for Rafa, his record speaks for itself, but it's a plain fact that without his chronic injuries, he wd have won many more GS titles, and despite all that was tied with Djoko until RG 2023. He has also won Gold in both singles and doubles at the Olympics. Injury again prevented him from defending his Gold singles at 2012 Olympics, and defending his 2008 Wimbledon crown, which I'm positive he'd have reclaimed in 2009. Then it wd have been Rafa with the record number.
Should have shown more of the semi final vs Delpo. The last 3 sets of that match Nadal was another level. I wouldn't be complaining were it not for 'US Open Tennis Championships' having taken down all the other RUclipsrs highlights of that match. Poor form. Respect to Rafa though ;)
It's the Carlos Moya effect. This style of tennis in 2017 would not have pulled through in that fifth set vs Medvedev in 2019. Moya got Nadal in 2019 to hit a lot better 120+ mph first serves and not care about the style points known as first serve % in. Moya also coached Nadal to use drop shots, serve/volley, and completely change tactics as an emergency option if the match completely turns against him. Nadal only won in that final set due to stepping up to return Medvedev's 120+ mph first serve bombs. Imagine 2017 Nadal returning those Medvedev first serves from 20 feet behind the baseline like he did with Anderson. He also used serve and volley to win the 2019 USO F. Nadal won 17 of 20 S&V points vs Medvedev and came to the net like 70 times, winning almost 80% of net points. Remember that Nadal's draw from 1R to QF was not very hard in 2017. Delpo and Anderson were very tough but did not offer that crazy insane defensive/chameleon style of tennis that Medvedev did in the final due to Medvedev's fantastic tennis IQ/changing of tactics.
Seascorp Scorpio dream on. The draw was for him and against Federer. He vs all the easy players. BTW, Rafa has a game of NOW(2018) overpowering players, and getting huge power. It’s why he sucks on grass as his backswing is to big.
Anderson destroyed Federer at Wimbledon. So if Anderson "sucks", then Federer is done. If Federer isn't done, then Anderson is good. Nadal also destroyed Del Potro, a GS winner.
Seeks to be the only player in the open era to win at least two grand slam in the big four, a magnificent record. From my point of view, would make the most complete. Federer and Djokovic could do it by winning another RG, Nadal another AO.
I think Rafa can win more Wimbledons if the schedule is not too close to the French Open. I wish they would move up the French Open to March or April. The FO and Wimbley are too closely scheduled.
Nadal was a bit lucky with the draw, and he was a bit lucky that Warinka and Murray and maybe Djokovich were out. But I swear watching his last matches of the tournament that he was by far the best player out there. Heck he deserves it. There’s no doubt in my mind.
So unlucky to retire with injury so deep in the tournament in 2018. He looked really good last week when he won the Rogers Cup (against Medvedev who is in amazing up and coming form who beat Djokovic in semis yesterday and won first ATP1000 today against Goffin) and he has been very careful not to play much on hard courts. I really feel he can win US Open again this year to make it 4 wins there and a19th grand slam.🎾👍🏆
