Have McLaren Finally Fixed Their Issues?

  • Over the last 12-18 months, I've been increasingly negative about McLaren road cars... so much so that Tony and I actually recorded a special episode of our podcast talking about all the issues we've experienced with McLarens. However, I feel like it's time to give the brand a second chance and spending 4 days with a 2021 720S Spider felt like a great place to start.
A lot of my frustrations over the past few years have come from the apparent lack of build quality of McLaren cars. My own 540C and many other McLaren cars I've driven have been plagued with electronic and mechanical problems that feel like could have been easily rectified.
So why give them a second chance? Since our McLaren special podcast came out, a number of McLaren owners got in touch saying they were fed up with all the negativity online about the cars and they wanted to let me know they were having great experiences with their own McLarens. On top of that, McLaren themselves got in touch and said they had been working hard to rectify some of the issues I had mentioned and so wanted to get me back in some cars to see if I could notice and appreciate the changes.
Here is the special episode of our podcast, Behind The Glass:

My 720s currently has started off 2021 strong with 1 blown turbo, 1 broken secondary air valve, a brake pad wear sensor having a seizure, only has locked me in my own car once so far, a front truck that doesn’t open, a jammed windshield washer squirter, a check engine light, an engine that stalls when you rev it, an engine control module failure, and a bad parking brake. I wish i was joking, but all of the above happened this year, and it’s already been a month! I’m proud of my lil girl. Seems to be happening to everyone that daily drives their Mclaren.

A lovely video Sam! I'm firmly a McLaren fan, but even I'll admit 'didn't break in four days' is a very low bar to clear for a car that costs this much. Hopefully they're back on the right track and can keep producing the cars we know they can.

Have had 3 McLaren's... 570S, 600LT and now 720S Spider. No major problems at all, and I track them regularly. The 720S just does it all, as you pointed out. The retractable rear window alone is worth the extra cost for the spider. Cheers!

giving a "press car" that works well doesnt mean they fix things. they picked the car so the review is kinda flawded, to show they improved would be you walking at a random mclaren dealer and pick a random car to try. i really like the way it looks and the blue one made me want a 720s but they went so of the "path" that even if i could aford it i would not buy one

I agree 100% with your feelings on McLaren, I owned a 650S with no issues whatsoever and I bought a 570S when it was released and it had a ton of issues and I owned it 9 months and it spent more time at the dealer being repaired than in my garage but I’ve got a friend who still owns a 12C that he bought new and he’s had next to zero problems with a car that was plagued with transmission and electrical issues, I truly believe that since McLarens revitalization that it’s luck of the draw as to the quality of your car.

I think it's good that McLaren is trying to show that they are addressing their issues but a 4-day loan car doesn't really prove that much. If they really want to show that they have improved their reliability and build quality, they should provide RUclipsrs like Sam 6-12 month loan cars as that would be a more valuable timeframe to prove actual improvements.

Sam, it’s interesting, and telling, to me that McLaren response to feedback is to concentrate on the reliability issues, no one doubts they are great engineers and it should be relatively simple job for great engineers to build reliable products (arguably they should have done that from the get go). What they seem to have side stepped is the appalling customer experience and that I am afraid is not something great engineers are capable of fixing. At this stage the contempt for customers that appears to be demonstrated both directly within the company and in the dealer network is endemic and embedded and can probably only be changed by a near tyrannical management showing zero tolerance for the slightest failure followed by significant sackings until the underlying attitude changes and are firmly embedded. I’ve had experience of doing this and I know talking about change has little chance of working, people don’t change until they see the metaphorical blood on the shop floor. I really hope they can do this but suspect they don’t have the willpower to make those hard choices. Great review of the spider👍

Great video Sam, pleased to say I’m one of those positive McLaren owners... you might remember me driving an orange 12c across Europe with you years ago (Alfa 4c days). I’m currently 2.5 years into ownership of a 650s Spider. Yes, new McLaren’s lose a tone of money (like so many new cars do). However, what a car they can be for the second hand owner such as myself. I’ve had very little issues and thousands of miles of enjoyment. That warp speed, carbon tub, low scuttle, roof off driving experience is so addictive. It’s a shame McLaren have created such a negative perception of themselves particularly from the newer models. I do hope this can be turned around in the future!

As this car ages, i seem to have a greater fondness for it, and I think the spider element helps. It is true their quality has plagued them for years now, and no matter what, it will take them years to recover from their relatively short lapse in build quality. One thing they still have to fix is keeping a car from coming out every month. Looking forward to their next few cars. Great review as always Sam... Nice to see even mundane parts of life in Britain, for people in other countries, it can be quite interesting just to see.
