I took that stupid thing off my garage door when I moved into my house 23 years ago when I first heard about this issue. They can also slide something in above the metal doors too. I’m surprised more people aren’t aware of this being a problem. Just keep something handy in the garage to pull that little lever down in an emergency. Stay safe.

Brilliant move (NOT); too bad your trick doesn't work. If all you did was remove the cord, you did nothing. A wire hook can still unlatch the mechanism. The flaw is how the trolley release is designed; they should be designed to be yanked away from the door, not downward as they are now. The designers of these rails are dumb. The problem has been known for decades and they still haven't designed a theft-proof trolley.

I bought my first home in the mid 80's. I have owned 5 other homes since then. All had door openers and never once in 40 years have I ever needed the emergency release. I remove the cords and put a couple of zipties through the hole and around the latch. The cord is wrapped around the end of the track if I ever need it. I also tied a small carabineer to the end to make it easy to use if I ever needed it.
When we go out of town the opener gets unplugged and a padlock gets placed on the track.

An easy fix for this is get a small pool noodle, it can be hollow or solid (solid you’ll need to cut a slot half way through it). Slide it over the rope pull and secure with zip ties. This prevents the thief from being able to grab the rope and pull it through the hole he’s drilled. Then he cannot unhitch the release. Secondary item is install a manual slide lock on the door. They are about $10 at Home Depot. Or buy a long bolt Master lock and slip it through a hole in the track just above a wheel. Cheap, easy and effective.

Easy fix-deterrent. Go to Lowe’s and for less than $5 each, buy these rounded triangular shaped metal spring locks that open and close by squeezing them. Put one on each side of your door in the hole of your door rails right above one of the door rollers. It prevents that door from opening. Impossible for any thief to open your big door by pulling on your emergency string.

If I call the police in a terrible neighborhood, the police still show up within 10 minutes for a non violent crime. population is much smaller. We also have less officers and two major trafficking highways that need to be covered. Dont worry. The rich have their gated communities the police will show up to in a timely manner out in CA sometimes still.

A woman in Encino, Leslie Banks in California reported the people who live next to her have two men with assault rifles guarding their home. People are hiring private security in America, to protect their homes, and it's not fair, for people who can't afford it. A neighborhood in Manhattan hired private security to protect their street from criminal activity. Leslie Swanson said she came home from work last week, and after parking in her driveway, saw two men with assault weapons standing on her neighbors lawn. She learned from her neighbors across the street, that the homeowners living next to her had hired private security to guard their home. Well, Leslie told her neighbors she can't afford private security, to protect her home. Her neighbors told her that they no longer watch tv in their living room, because they fear the private security guards stray bullets hitting their living room windows, across the street from them protecting their neighbors home. They moved their entertainment system to the back of their house in their guest room to watch tv.

My interactions with homeowners and the SFPD have shown that putting up a sheet of metal inside the are where the y have to drill helps. The other thing you can do is disconnect the emergency chord. This is not a new thing and a little bit of preparedness can save a homeowner big time.

2 years ago, after a few close calls with my garages, I secured the emergency cords and added latches ($5-10) and wireless security cameras ($100-150). I accidentally pressed the garage door button while latched a few times 😂 but eventually got into the habit of unlatching every time, and latching when I get home. It’s a low cost investment considering the danger of someone accessing your home/cars, I’d recommend it to anyone facing these issues.
