I won't forget my first acquaintance with this work. It was in a recital by Daniel Roth (student of Marie-Claire Alain) in Stuttgart, probably in 1987. It was the time when the popularity of French Romantic organ music surged in Germany. In the first half, Roth played some movements from Widor symphonies; in the second, he played Vierne's Second in its entirety. I thanked Roth after the concert, telling him that he had opened up a new sound world to me.

...always loved the Scherzo and Cantabile. The registration, theme, and harmonies in the latter are hauntingly beautiful. This and the 6th are my favourites of the set.
I was fortunate to attend a concert Madame Marie-Claire Alain an all Bach performance during the Tricentennial in Seattle back in 1985 on the massive Flentrop at St Marks on Capitol Hill. I was also able to meet and talk with her at a reception afterwards where she signed my programme. Such a wonderful sweet person who had such an incredible gift. Never forget the experience.

Louis Vierne was a true inspiration when it came to French classic! Such rich and luscious harmonies dissonances and consonance!

Such a moment of loneliness. Left bank. Late... and almost blind. Remember? Not far from where Diana was ...., if you know what I mean? It's music from the troubled heart of Paris. Listen. It's French... speaking.

The conclusion of the first movement is so incredibly satisfying. After the combination of the second and first theme on top of each other that final slam of tutti chords is just hard to beat in its drama. Then comes the apotheosis of the second movement that unfolds so pain-inducingly slow. What a piece of music.

Remarkable - exceptional clarity. Do you know when the recording was made? I visited Caen in mid 1990s and the sound chests were running badly.

I imagine this would have been a favorite of Captain Nemo!

I wonder how many people might understand that Captain Nemo reference? I can still see James Mason playing that organ in the Nautilus. And I'm 75.
