Mozart's Symphony in D major (K. 204/213a) was created in Salzburg on 1775, derived from the Serenade No.5 in D major. Because of its date, it may have been intended for performance as part of the graduation ceremonies at the Salzburg University, but otherwise the premiere date of the symphony and the performers involved are unknown. The serenade was written at a time when Mozart was growing increasingly dissatisfied being concer...

    The fifth movement is written in sonata form. It begins with a slow introduction dominated by violins and bassoon, growing more expressive as it unfolds. The main allegro starts suddenly, with a vigorous and animated main theme in D major, exposed forte in full orchestra. A substantial transition leads to the more graceful and mellow second theme in A major, presented in piano by strings in contrapuntal fashion. This exposition is then repeated. The ensuing development deals with fragmented versions of the material, which are subjected to rhythmic transformations and harmonic modulations. The themes are then recapitulated in the home key of D major, with an optional repeat from the development onwards. A decided coda ends the work.

    Of the second movement Wagner wrote only 30 bars, I believe for piano, before abandoning the project in 1836. He was beginning to work on winning over Minna Planner and the work was taking time. Wagner also wrote that the work should not be continued under any circumstances. In 1884 or 1885, after the death of the maestro, Felix Motl, at Cosima Wagner's request, created five orchestral minutes from these initial 30 bars. I believe that the bars in question correspond to the main melody with which the second movement begins. The rest may be added by Motl. And among these additions another theme in a minor key sounds unmistakably in the middle of the 5-minute adagio we hear. And this leads me to conclude that both themes, the main one and the one in a minor key, are present in the slow central movement of a three-movement piano sonata that Wagner had finished a few years earlier, between 1830 and 1833. If it is true that Wagner was going to use the material from that sonata in this symphony, it seems that he was going to do so with the themes changed, since in the sonata, the main theme is the one in a minor key and the secondary theme, the main theme of the first 30 bars outlined for the symphony's adagio. With all this material at his disposal, if he knew it (which he probably did, given the addition of that second theme in a minor key of the sonata), it could be said that good old Motl did not take Cosima's commission too seriously and that, at a given moment, he got rid of it by force, leaving us with a poorly elaborate movement of little symphonic interest. Motl was certainly not Wagner.

    Thank you, Sergio. Just a couple of remarks. The title you use here - "Sinfonietta No. 2" suggests there might be a No. 1, but that’s not accurate. The official title of the work is (and always was) "Sinfonietta per grande orchestra". In this composition from 1993, Ľudovít Rajter used material (especially in the first movement) from his Sinfonietta written during his studies in Vienna (1924-1929), but after the premiere, he decided to reject it. Among the influences on Rajter´s style, I would also mention Zoltán Kodály and French composers of the late 19th and early 20th century. Josef Suk among the influences would have surprised Rajter (as his son, I believe I can say that). The third movement, and especially the trumpet solo, is dedicated to his great teacher, Franz Schmidt, and is directly inspired by the master's 4th Symphony. Nonetheless, thank you very much, and best wishes!

      Thank you for your comment Adrian! Just to clear things further, so this piece is a revision of the original sinfonietta? Does the original version still exist?

    • @AdrianRajter
      @AdrianRajter 7 дней назад

      @@SergioCánovasCM Dear Sergio, although L. Rajter used some material from the Sinfonietta from his student days in 1993, this is a new work, not a revision. The 1928 Sinfonietta does not exist and, therefore, should not be included in the list of Rajter's compositions, although some sources mention it.

    For those hip to it, this is the greatest musical composition of all time. Carter was a god for having written it. At least he was in touch with something extraordinary here, like the secrets of the universe. You can’t quite tell from this premiere recording, though. The musicians do get through it-bless their hearts-but the *gestalt* of the work was too advanced for mortals in 1970. (Think even of the astonished sound engineers! ) One reason the work is so difficult is because once the tenor drum starts its initial roll, and the work is unleashed, there are zero stopping points, formatas, or re-gathering places. The flow is relentless. Every musician must concentrate on the macro development and also their micro contributions. Carter relied on the fact that pianist Paul Jacobs could handle the metric modulations, as an assist to the conductor in certain key places. We who revere this work also revere (1) Boulez for reviving it a few years later while whipping it into shape, and (2) Knussen for conducting an X-ray-perfect recording many years after that.
