*Note: In my haste to make this video, I omitted mention of the MC 50mm f/2.8 'micro' lens ... so four, not three, 50mm Z lenses. Do you own any and what's your experience?*
I’m lucky enough to own the 1.2 and it’s a lovely lens and produces incredible images wide open. I’ve also got the 1.8 so finding it hard to justify the 1.4 as well however I’m really liking the images I’m seeing as well as its rendering. For me it makes sense to pair this with the Zf especially with the programable ring. I think if I didn’t already own the 1.2 then it would be a no brainer imo
I think a 58mm f/1.4 would have made more sense. Nikon has all of their main lenses out now so now they're adding to the lineup with the extra stuff for the average shooter. I have the 40mm f/2 lens and it's a cheaper lens but I think it's fantastic. Mine is very sharp and it seems like it has a lot of micro contrast. I love using it to shoot black and white. I haven't really seen any bad lenses made in the z mount compared to those in the f mount.
Choices, choices, choices. Nikon is killing it Ray. I love all these new lenses they are putting out. I have the 1.8 in the 50 but the 1.2 calls my name every time I walk in my local camera shop. I guess I will need to talk to the minister of finance and see what she says
Thanks for your insights on this lens. To be honest I was awake when the press releases were coming out and wondered why Nikon decided to go this route, considering the 1.8 I use professionally and is so so good is only $100 more. I am surprised that they haven’t created a $250 nifty fifty yet, something priced perfectly for new camera purchasers to get out of telephoto and into the world of primes. We shall see if this lens is as successful as the 50 1.8 S.
Great video. Always informative. I demoed this lens in NYC last month. Unfortunately, its quite awful. Soft from corner to corner. Might make a great kit lens but the 1.8 S is hands down a far better investment.
Ya I didn't see this 50 1.4 coming. I have the 50 1.8 so I'm good there, but I have my eye on the 35 1.4. Curious / hopeful they'll do this with the 85 as well. I don't see 1.4's happening for the 20 and 24 (but hey, maybe). But wow 45 native Z Nikon lenses, that's pretty impressive!
I knew Nikon had to release a 50mm f1.4 Z lens. I always thought it was odd and not right that Nikon did not make a 50mm f1.4 lens for the Z line. first Nikon F Photomic came with the 50mm f1.4 as a kit. Since then the 50mm f1.4 has always been seen in the Nikon lens line. Maybe Nikon just didn’t believe mirrorless cameras could handle a 50mm f1.4? 🤷♂️ But here it is, and Nikon has made the Z lens line feel right again.
I own the 50mm macro (MC), and it’s a great lens. I bought it as a budget version of the 105 macro, and have been very happy with it. Even though it’s a 2.8, it’s super versatile if not being used in low light.

First. Exciting to see the 1.4 range grow a little further. Thanks for the video Ray!! (and thanks for the shoutout) :)
No worries, Matt! Thanks for the info. Yes, this is another great addition to the Z lens lineup.
I 100% agree about the 1.8 lenses. I have the 35, 50, and 85 and they are all phenomenal pieces of glass. Another excellent video, sir!
Right on!

Totally agree re the 40mm f/2. This video was made with it.
great strategy from them
I think so.
Many thanks for another great video! Cheers
Thank you! Cheers!
great presentation. thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!

I know what you mean!

Yes, I think a "pancake" 50 would do well. So would a 35.
Totally, love that idea!!
I wish they would make a compact 85mm, even if it was an f2 or 2.8.
I hope they make an 85mm f1.4 similar to this 50mm

Thanks for the report. Some people are describing it as "characterful." As a 1.8 owner, I'm not likely to bite, but it is another option.

Yeah, I'm more inclined to go for the 35m 1.4 ... who knows when we'll see the 35 1.2.

My 50 1.2 is always on one of my cameras. I can't see using anything else. I also have the 1.8, that lens hasn't been used once since getting the 1.2.
4 50mm if you count the macro 50mm z
Yes, quite missed that.
