I just watched an RV utuber who was in Alaska and drove through a construction zone and bent the trailer tongue and the dealership, the manufacturer, Lipert, nobody would help him. They all said he took it off road and his Kestone warranty and extended warranty was void. He swears he didn't. Bottom line nobody including Lipert helped this guy and also said it was his fault he had a weight distribution hitch attached and I think the Lipert frames on the bigger trailers are too weak. Makes no sense to use the same Guage steal on a 20-24 ft on a 30-40 ft.

Both the manufacture and Lippert says one thing and does another (I have recorded calls as well as the "other guy") I may be releasing the videos with peoples names bleeped out. I have been holding off for now per my lawyer. I had a conversation with a LCI employee who was reviewing my claim and basically said it was obviously a design issue and they would surely cover it......Then as soon as we hung up I got an email saying they are denying the claim........I have a few owners who are sharing info and we are all being sent through the same issues.

This guy is good. I do think that the frame material is far too light on RVs in an attempt to keep the weight down. Rough roads, construction etc are all part of the adventure. Lippert needs to design frames with the proper gauge metal to handle it. This is a safety issue. Frames should not be bending or cracking, period!!

My 2014 Redwood came with the now discontinued LCI Tri Glide pin box, one that had several internal grease fittings. After checking the Redwood owners forum, I discovered several owners of this pin box reported pre-mature failures of the Tri Glide model. My fifth wheel was out of warranty, but when I contacted LCI expressing my concern with the Tri Glide pin box, and they sent me free of charge, a new lower jaw that converted that Tri Glide pin box to the Trail Air model. Very good customer service.

Wow, more details please. I've heard a lot of frame failure issues, asside from legitimate individual defect frames, are when the manufacturer overloads the spec of the frame they contracted LCI to build for them. Basically they request a frame designed for a GVWR of say 15k lbs but build an RV with a 20k GVWR on the sticker.

The fifth wheel was a 2013 Open Range 316 rls.We puchased it in 2015. Drove from Denver to Joplin Mo., to pick it up. I install a shock kit, heavier axles with larger brakes, and other upgrades.Lippert played the out of warranty game. Even though they actually had a TSB- frame plate repair kit. Which I had to originally buy. But they did refund my money after raising hell.Had a highly certified welder inspect it. Because it was bulging the plates could not be welded flush. That my story. And from what I saw online it happened to other rigs.

So, you damage your brand new RV driving thru a construction site, where the road was torn up so new roads can be laid down. You damage your suspension due to this construction, and are forced to ask the manufacturer for warranty repairs. You tell the manufacturer what happened, then the next thing you know, your $7,000 warranty claim is denied because the manufacturer says that you went "off roading" with your RV. This is the sad truth to how manufacturers think and work in today's World

    • @MrFescue

I've been in industrial equipment maintenance for over 30 years and I completely agree with Matt. I talk to the operator as much as possible to get the background on what happened, what didn't happen, and what they think maybe should have happened. They make my job so much easier and quicker to get the equipment back into production by taking care of most of the detective work for me. Yes, some times they fear a write up, but if I feel they are honest with me, I've told more than one supervisor, my job is to fix the problem, not the blame. This type of job is almost ways dealing with a hostile person. They may not realize that we didn't cause this issue, but we represent the source of frustration. We are there to actually help them get moving again. Matt, you should realize you are the hero in this story, even if you can't fix the issue, you do get them to someone that can. His company needs to realize, Matt is their ambassador to a hostile country, and after listening to him, I'll bet my next paycheck, he leaves their customers still loyal to their products. Thanks for being out there Matt, and thanks for the video. In my approaching retirement, I am considering getting an RV. Some of the stories you see are quite disturbing, knowing there are Matt's out there is reassuring. Thanks again BTBRV!

While humans are not perfect saying RVs are made by people who make mistakes is just an excuse for poor quality. Would you accept RV quality with a new $50,000 car? No way. This is because they take the mistakes out with good quality systems and error proofed designs. Testing and validation of RVs during development is non existent. Do they ever run a rough road durability test? I would like to see somebody take a new towable RV to the Navistar (Studebaker) proving grounds in South Bend IN and run it on their rough road durability test track. It would be a pile of rubble in short order.

    • @BigTruckBigRV

Cars and trucks are so beyond different in terms of the manufacturing process than an RV. Case in point, a car is closer to a Smartphone than an RV when it comes to an assembly line. RVs are far more similar to a home than a car. If the robotics, design technology, grafting, engineering and regulations that went into a car went into an RV, something like my Brookstone would cost around $1mill....not even kidding. As an example, even a $750k Entegra Motorhome doesn't have the fit and finish of a $50k Chevy truck in terms of the RV portion.

Thank you for this. Can you tell...the average inexperienced person...know when they have bent shackles, etc? I worried because i came out of a store driveway a big off and the tire went off the curb, not out the driveway. Could that have broken anything? I did not see anything, but it worried me. I do appreciate him telling us about uneven tire wear as a sign. I know Robin (Creativity RV) said she was sitting in the bathroom and suddenly realized she could see into another room...the wall had come loose! They repaired sort of this and that, but the whole trailer was coming apart, something was very wrong. She finally gave up. She never found out why, but wondered if it could have been weight. We need clues to recognize...are there some that are recognizable before the walls separate? I appreciated learning about the slides. That would have made me nuts. I live in a cabin that has no right angles, i am pretty sure. It would make a contractor or engineer crazy, too. Putting in windows and a new door was quite the challenge. The door frame shifts with the seasons. I am praying the backroom doesn't just fall off one day before we can hit the road. Every day for 15 years i wake up and thank the Goid Lord that the roof is still above me, not on me! I sure don't want to worry like that in our new nomad home. Yes, i really got taken when i bought it, long story. But we are leaving now, new story😄

The 1/2 ton tow rating is one factor for issues. To get the tow rating something has to give. The biggest problem is the quality control from when a trailer leaves manufacture, the inspection when the trailer gets to dealer, and when a buyer purchases it. The problem I had was the trailer was sold to me with known issues by dealer. The answer from General Manager was if they fixed issues before they sold them they would never have a trailer to sell. And followed up by saying it you want a trailer without issues buy one that’s 2 years old. 😳😡. So I would say if your buying new get the Quality inspection list and do your walk around… Quality inspection is key.

About 15 minutes in, they start talking about how the manufacturer builds the unit. Here's my position on this frame failure issue.
If I buy a new RV, I bought the entire system from (Forest River, Grand Design, etc.). I didn't buy the Lippert frame and then have some other company build the cabin. I bought the whole thing as a system. I expect the manufacturer (Forest River, Grand Design, etc.) to provide the warranty for the whole thing. I don't care who made the frame. The manufacturer is the one who bought the frame and they are responsible if it fails. The RV (all of it) will be subject to the same road conditions as the tow vehicle and it should be able to withstand the construction zone, pot-holes, rail road crossings and all other every-day problems without failure.
Don't leave me stranded while you try to figure out who pays for the repair. If it is clearly a warranty issue, just fix it. You can bill the frame/window/refrigerator manufacturer separately. You're the one who built and sold this piece of garbage...

"The RV (all of it) will be subject to the same road conditions as the tow vehicle and it should be able to withstand the construction zone, pot-holes, rail road crossings and all other every-day problems without failure." Exactly. The trailer should tuff enough to withstand what a stock 4by4 truck can tow it through. Seriously.

I wonder if they could explain that one.....

    • @BigTruckBigRV
      @BigTruckBigRV  2 года назад

Yeah, I believe we addressed that. "bent in half" is a HUGE exaggeration, like out of this world exaggeration my friend. It "buckled" and "deformed" due to an extreme lever action torquing the boxed section of frame. You can actually still see the weight distribution hitch attached at an EXTREME pressure position with the chains. That can transfer over 3000lbs to the A frame easy. Coupled with towing the RV over extremely rough Alaskan gravel roads is a recipe for disaster. Proof? How many similar failures have you seen? It happens about as much as Jeeps get their frames bent because they are driven too hard off-road.

Yes ever bigger RV's require ever thicker Steel or aluminum framing. Cost saving measures from Lippert and other suppliers. Like time is money and then they tack it together instead of doing an modular well design (I made an modular repairable design but no company is interested in that. nor US american nor German Wohnwagen manufacturers). Sales and specially service sales would hurt if these things got well designed.
Prettyness with glue and wallpaper have won over durability, modularity, function and repairability.
I guess that's what the average american customer demands - the whining comes a few months later when things fall apart. But people will allways return to prettyness over functionality.

Lippert builds the frames to the manufacturers specs. They are all trying to save weight. Using subpar steel from China. My best friend had a 2014 Heartland Silverado that his insurance company just declared a total loss due to the frame cracking between the main box and the elevated section. The flex cracked the outside walls on both sides. His service guy dug in and found the issue. Heartland specified too big a hole in the frame for wiring. They took too much steel out and allowed it to flex. The insurance adjuster also found cracks in the rear of the unit close to the back wall. They could do way better just using gussets and quality steel.

This technician seems like he will do what is necessary to assist the customer to make the repair. The root of the problem is the substandard construction practices of the RV industry on newer trailers.. RUclips is full of videos of people with newer trailers stranded by the side of the road (like the guy in Alaska previously mentioned) with broken frames, broken slides, and a host of other problems that can be traced back to poor workmanship on the unit that came out of the factory. I'm surprised that NHTSA doesn't intervene on behalf of the public on this issue due to the catastrophic possibilities of the frame failure, or axles coming loose and breaking free from the frame mounts causing the vehicle to lose control while on the road. Lippert blames the RV factories for ordering cheap light frames saying they are just building them to the factories specifications. Apparently there is little (if any) safety engineering designed into some RV's by the factory, and there seems to be little or no accountability for the poor construction quality of their units. This is evidenced by the plethora of complaints by RUclips (and other) RV customers who cannot get the factories to stand behind their products, or even get a return call. I guess it will take a few wrongful death law suits attributable to the sub-standard RV construction causing accidents, before any action is taken.
