In 2012 at age 22, took my speed triple into the dealer for a service. They talked me into taking a 1200 gs out for a ride. Said thats an old man bike. An hour later I got back to the dealer after a mountain ride…. I bought my first gs later that week. A 1998 1100. 6 months later a brand new triple black 1200. 2 years later a water boxer adventure. Now excited to get onto a 1300 trophy and enjoy another amazing bike.

MCN thank you for such an informative review of the GS 1300 BMW. this is one of the first reviews where the discussion about the bike for capabilities really came alive one of the best reviews of the bike I’ve listened to in many years thank you very much it makes me want to go and have a ride on the GS 1300 BMW even though I can’t afford to buy one it must be amazing to ride.

Love these "fireside chats" and this one was right up there. Forty-three minutes has never flown by so quickly. As far as the GS goes: the lack of illuminated switch-gear is a real gear-grinder for me.

I have a 73 plate 1300 Triple black with Touratech luggage , find it all day comfy at 6'2. It's a superb bike with ridiculous power and torque and some clever features, and now Ive put some new metzeler tyres on, handles like a dream. Engine does sound horrible at low speeds. I had the switchgear recall earlier this month, BMW look after you.

word on the street is that motorrad is preparing a proper 21” scrambler in two versions, so holding out for that.
if the f450gs delivers on the 175kg wet weight and retains decent suspension travel would also be a strong contender for my next bike.

Noting your delays with panniers really makes me question getting another BMW. I bought the Ultimate Edition last 1250GS which had a letter saying put a warranty claim in for the small back up key. I’ve been waiting since August 2023 and I’ve still not got it. The head unit then failed and can’t power the sat nav in April 2024 and here I am still waiting over 7 months later for the parts. What is the point of a 3 year warranty if i’m going to have to wait that long for parts! No one seems to cover manufacturer waiting times so it’s hard to choose a bike you can confidently tour on as my trip to Türkiye in April looks like being shelved due to BMW parts delays. I’m not going without a reliable (phone service free) satnav.
Great vid as usual thanks….Miffed of the Isle of Man.

      @davidmallia628 2 месяца назад +3

@kwakithailand it does have long term reliability, and are easy to work on. BMW also provide great backup. I have had Japanese bikes that fail. Putting Japanese bikes on a pedestal of eternal reliability, is a myth. Yes, they are good, having pros, and cons, but in this day, and age, other manufacturers have caught up, not least the Chinese. Let us be objective, and fair. The GS is a best seller for a reason. Look how good the Yamaha Tenere 1200 was, for reliability. It is lost from sight these days, because reliability is not the alpha, and omega, of motorcycling. Motorbikes are about how they make you feel when you ride them.

Brilliant ! I have one and yes it’s awesome , a few extra positives to add, engine and swinging arm now has a harder coating more durable , yes it’s also way easier to clean as there are less fins on the barrels etc, I have the forged alloys which look awesome and are lighter and easier to clean, the gearbox has a lovely little wine like a mini with a straight cut gearbox, adaptive cruise is awesome , I’d have a slightly bigger screen for motorways I’m (nearly 6ft) ha, I wish I’d kept the high comfort seat as it had more padding and increased peg to seat , the seat is meant to be adjustable but it’s not really (naff design) a token gesture to make the internal padding higher (little flipper under the seat), I have had the 1100 1150 1200 and 1250 and yes this is more agile and sporty , I have had a recall notice from bmw stating new panniers are being made foc swap to customers eta spring next year , pain , but at least it’s being addressed , one q for the top man , do you prefer it to the multi ?? I have also had them and the pikes peak! I do in respect of dealer back up, no chain , and more torque , incidentally the new paralever is less of a sap on tyre bhp, it’s very close to a chain now ! Ha, I love bikes and spent waaay to much money on them , understanding wife 👍 great review,

The auto height adjustment is useful even in road use. I'm 6.0ft, and I had a loan GS with ASA whilst my RT was in for a quick check. Some roads have a camber, which you don't always perceive. Also, sometimes, things like cement spilled on the road by cement mixers cause the bike to be higher than you'd expect. This has happened to me twice, once in Wembley, once near Stamford (both close to cement works). Having the height automatically adjust is always useful, not just off road.
I was massively impressed with the 1300 GS. The engine was really sweet, and effortlessly quick. It seemed to reach the legal limits without any effort at all. I didn't go too far, around 200 miles, in the day, but I was mightily impressed with it. I wouldn't buy one, the toss up is the same as I had a few years ago new 1300RT or new 1300GSA.

Best thing about the GS=Adv's big tank is you don't have to fill it all the way if you're riding with guys with smaller tanks
I picked up my 07 GS-Adv in Santa Fe. Rode to the southern border of CO and topped off. Filled up again in Cheyenne, WY. On another trip, I was riding with buddies from Sandy Eggo to El Paso. One was on a Monster 900 the other was on a 'Busa. I was never in danger of running out cause I always added an extra gallon over the Monster's tank
Did the same thing riding from Sandy Eggo to Corpus Christie with a buddy on a regular GS. His 'you need gas, stupid' light was on in the middle of W Texas while my -Adv was fine.
Having the capacity is great even if you don't use it

These adventure bikes are just so expensive and tech laden it kind of puts me off.
Having ridden this bike I can attest that the handling of this bike is simply awesome. 3rd gear wheelie with some clutch and a helping bump in the A Road was an eye opener.
The size of the bike is very compact. It doesn’t feel as substantial like the outgoing model.
Performance is awesome. The price will equally leave you in awe… it’s so expensive.
I think a sub 15k liter bike like the Suzuki Honda and even kwack seem more value for money.

Lots of electronics issues that an independent cannot diagnose or fix, so do not ride far from a Motorrad workshop. The most reliable and fixable GS was the 1150. After that you are in computer la la land. This is no longer the bike to cross a desert on unless you have $10k available for a retrieve. The prize still goes to a Honda or a DR650, the Desert Tractor.

Mines had 2 starter relays and a rear shock
There is an adjustable bar under the front seat that gives you a bit more height and also other seats avaliable
Yes the engine is noisy I think its down to thiner casings
I love the fact its more refined
If you ride at the legal speeds 275 miles range is easily achieved

I'm looking at this section of the engine, and I see that the water pump housing is plastic and is inside the engine.
This is a potential future problem. My complaint is also the cooling fan that is only on one radiator, the other radiator has no fan, those who live in warmer climates could have a problem with engine cooling.
The plus is that 5 liters of oil goes into the engine, but maintenance is also more expensive because of that.

They made so much of this switch gear for economies of scale that it won’t get updated till they have used it all up….😊

You have to compare a 1300GS to a 1250GS. The 1300 GSA is wider then a 1250 GSA!

Let's be honest, it's a superb bike built for old gentlemen who aren't worried about outliving their money. For the under 60 crowd you can have a heck of a lot of fun on a bike 1/3rd the price and not worry about dropping it.

Terrific review and an amazing machine no doubt, I rode one for a day and was extremely impressed, trouble is I ended up riding like a maniac because youre so isolated and feel so cosseted its like youve got to turn the wick up to get the thrill a much lesser bike would give you at half the speed, A very, very fast real world bike. You would have to be trying very much harder to keep up on a much sportier bike. Not criticisms, just observations. I can now kinda get why gs riders can be abit aloof. In many ways you would have to be rather foolish to ride anything else! Weird huh?

Despite its apparent absolute wonderfullness and amazing brilliance etc etc.... I have no interest in owning one. Not particularly a "hater" I just think it looks a bit of a cheap pygmy compared to the much more masculine 1250 series... and the prices now..... just ridiculous.

Is 'lifestyle' motorcycling going to far? What happens when all the electonics do a wobbly, how much is it gunna cost then? And will there be anyone intelligent enough to fix it that doesn't charge £300/hr? Average age of a GS owner in UK has gotta be in the sixties!
