@@LiamHantos because that would be too obvious. It needs to be the ladders that didn't make the cut in the original Up movie that Potato Jet was obviously casted for.
Netflix originals uses so much of my footage and guess what, they have never once asked me what camera it was shot on. I think they put those specs out there to scare people away.
Yaaasss gurrrrl! I just threw out a bunch of black socks that had holes in the heels and I'm about to get a bunch more. You can only make so many decisions in a day, so just grabbing any two socks and pulling them on lets you make a better decision later in the day. Super looking forward to you shooting on that Bolex!
It's a 30's thing. I have the same kind of socks that you just bought and I did the exact same thing. My son thought I was loosing my mind. I couldn't handle wasting my time matching my socks anymore. Just something about it makes life easier and it refreshes the soul. You the man Potato Jet. Keep up the good work.
I just did the same exact thing with my socks! The amount of stress lifted from my life is unbelievable!! Getting old is equally so exciting and terrifying depressing 😂
Its phenomenal watching the making of a movie and the behind scenes that will appear on the big screen. The amount of people, expertise, talent is mind blowing.
Very interesting, Potato! Last years oscar video is what got me hooked. Thanks for all of your stuff. Also, Alex, if you don't get in a video soon... you know what will happen to you.... just like prom night.
I'm your biggest fan potato jet. Much of my filming ideas I've learned from you as I live in kibera slums, kenya and can't afford going to film school. Bravo. Your biggest fan Steve
First Man was probably my favorite space movie when it comes to sound. It was fucking visceral, but incredibly down to earth (ironic, huh?). Nothing flashy but still goosebump-inducing, breathtaking sound design. PLEASE BRING HIM ON
"uhm wHaTs A fiLm cAmeRa" film is one of the top things that makes me love movies: FILM. the correspondence with material, with items that grow from the EARTH, real celluloid film... I hope it has a while before people forget about it all together. :(
Hey Gene! Reckon you could do a video on the business side of filmmaking? i.e. creating/sending quotes and invoices for jobs, how to create contracts and all that stuff? It’s not the most glamorous side of filmmaking but I think a lot of people would get something out of it!
Film 😍 Always looks so... tangible? It just has such a beautiful quality and you're right, can't REALLY be replicated using digital. Arri definitely comes close. So close that I remember reading that in The Intouchables they used primarily film but wanted to get more wriggle room for night scenes so they used an Alexa for that and film for everything else. Gorgeous film if you haven't seen it!
Very entertaining as always. LOL!!! I learned alot about different cameras from your channel. Thumbs up! Heck, tomato jet or potato set ... does that stuff really matters? =D
Alex - you have to join Potato Jet on his channel or you’ll have to film several feature out of doors films in Toronto in February. Yay 0°F is so much fun to film In!
I really hope Alex comes on Potato Jet's show! I was wondering, as someone that is interested in sound, how you mix big movies? Your process, what software and plugins you use to get "cinematic" sound and how you got to where you are in your career? Any tips for anyone that would like to get into the sound industry in Hollywood?
Man that is pretty cool seeing the winner of your giveaway at the end of your video. I wish more you tubers would post that and it’s nice to see that this young man Will be using it to its full potential. Great video. I bought my first Camera to do RUclips video reviews and while I was getting most of my equipment piece by piece I ended up learning how to use the Panasonic G7 and I ended up loving me taking photographs then doing videos. But I still like to see what kind of video cameras are out there and who is using what
Thumbs up on that socks strategy, I am doing it that way for years now. While my girlfriend is sorting trough her socks for what feels like hours, I just throw the whole bunch in the drawer and never even think about if the dryer may have stolen one...
I'm still impressed from Bohemian Rhapsody about when the Camera shot went through Freddie's Legs, the piano, the sustain pedal and the chair to shoot Brian May playing the guitar on Live Aid Still impressed thinking it's a GoPro shot that -_- but an Arri Alexa
I had the same idea with the socks about a year ago. Since then I got rid off everything else but my fully identical grey socks. No more unmatched sock. No more pairing.
It's also worth noting that for one scene, First Man used the IMAX MSM 9802, their big boy 15/70 camera best known for Christopher Nolan's (and his DP, Hoyte Van Hoytema's) use of it on all of his recent movies.
Awesome video! Would love to see a video on cinematography. I know that’s a really broad topic, but would love to learn more. Also, a video on vlog cinematography would be cool!
@Potato Jet Some argue that it is actually cheaper to shoot film as the cost of backing up digital media costs so much and it can be impossible to predict how to best store the masters once it is finished. A good case in point the Film Drive was shot on the Alexa but then stored on Film cos they know it will last for 100 years if properly stored. This also has the awesome benefit of taking a dupe of the master and being able to watch a digital film projected from film :D which i got to see, adds a lot to Drive.
i still find it interesting to discuss animated movies because they all calculate sensors and lenses. so there's still some things to be said about them
Congratulations! to the winner of the under $1000.00 set up you created. I can't wait to be able to purchase a setup like that for myself. Which might be soon since I was able to find a Zhuyin Crane 2 Gimbal for $116 and some change. Wow! you could get the whole set up with the gimbal for under $800.
Awesome as always! Could you please do a video on getting the best cinematic video for You Tube on a smart phone! Lens, settings etc... I’ve got an iPhone XS Max and have done a ton of research but it would be kool to have it all in one place.
Lorenzo Pizzio Film > Everything else :D. Also we’re in the 4K era for consumers but honestly movies are still shot in the vast majority in 2k! And you can scan your film in 4K, even in 8k, if it’s 70mm even more! Why would you though.
*Alex, if you don't come on Potato Jet's show, I'll get a bunch of left-side only socks and plant them around your house to drive you crazy on laundry day!!*
Would you do a comparison between the 80D, the 6D mk ii and something else fairly budget for student filmmakers? I just bought the 6D ii and I absolutely love it!
have you ever thought about making a video comparing film cinema camera with the Arri/Red digital ones? It would be awesome! You should make a vlog with a film camera too
POTATO, every video you post I copy/paste this comment and you never see it. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED!!!!!! PLEASE READ MY COMMENT!!! I'm a cinema student that is curious like you
Francisco Teicher Too many outcomes possible using film to compare it to digital sensors, while different creative pipeline and workflow. Depending on the film stock used, if it’s pre-flashed, how it’s developed, how it’s scanned, what the digital color grade is, you can make it look a myriad of ways. Don’t know where he’d get the money to do all that either.
The Oscars are majority studio films, so the Alexa (in its many forms) is expected. You should take a look at the independent spirit awards and compared what those were shot on.
My sidebar recommended video says "UPsetting Ferrari at Nuremberg" and I never watch car videos. So many people comment UP on your channel, it is affecting my recommended videos. haha
I did the same thing with my socks a few years ago. I have 2 kind. Short socks for summer and long socks for winter. If they are inside out I just wear them that way now lol I don’t even bother flipping them makes no difference
My Amazon Echo went crazy everytime you said "Alexa".
Mine too!
Now everybody, go to my channel and subscribe. Why? Potato Jet and Armando asked you to. Right?
Same here
Armando Ferreira you should have the option to change its name.
Just throw it far, far away.
Alex if you don't come back Potato Jet is going to dress up like the kid from Up and throw ladders at you. #memelife
Andie the Lab why ladders? You should pin balloons to him.

As much as I know about cameras, I still find this video Interesting Everytime you make it. !!.

The Alexa 65 is THE digital IMAX camera. IMAX and ARRI teamed up to make the camera together (if you look on ARRI's website, it has more details).
