    One tip I’d also mention. A bizarre one and minor but makes a difference. If nervous. Don’t have your hand in your pocket. I was always told never to do it as if you have loose change or your keys in there you end up rattling them, it’s distracting to the audience and almost feeds their nervousness of the speaker.

    Antonio you hit all the right points. I think most important is just being comfortable talking to new people and to practice, practice, practice.

  • @chainer8686
    @chainer8686 6 лет назад +1

    College level courses elaborate more on these points while giving you practice, but if you're just getting started, this vid is all you need so long as you take it seriously.
    Where I work, we have these Monday morning meetings. These are intended as a review of the week prior; accidents, production ororganization issues, etc. You guys wouldn't belive the lack of preparation at such a high level with a facility of just about a thousand people. Worst offense is everything is typed out on power point slides with the speaker having their back to the audience (never, and I mean never turn your back, step off to the side of the stage if necessary or turn slightly) and reading said slides word for word in a flat tone.

  • @methembekevinndlovu4165
    @methembekevinndlovu4165 6 лет назад +1

    Thank you Antonio, i think your video was very profound!
    Just a little more things one may consider prior to giving a presentation are:
    1) Grammatical errors.
    These may result in a negative outcome and should be noted. ~e.g "I told him I ain't going to do it"
    2) Colloquialism
    These are words and phrases used informally. Sometimes they are unclear, and people may fail to understand your intended meaning.
    3) Jargon
    The technical language developed by a professional group, such as electricians, computer operators, physicians and economists. ~e.g InCo, brief, CPU, ICU. It can really be confusing when individuals who comprehend such terms attempt communication with those who do not.
    4) Sexist, Racist, and Heterosexist Language.
    Language can communicate prejudice, & can silence some members of co-cultures as it privileges others. Also to be avoided are generalizations and stereotypes › beliefs, based on previously formed opinions and attitudes, that all members of a group are more or less alike.
    5) Clichés
    An expression that has lost originality and force through overuse. ~e.g No pain, no gain.
    Clichés can be a shorthand way to express a common thought. They may be unclear to individuals who are unfamiliar witg the underlying idea.
    *Be the most dashing person in the room, and present like it. 😉

    One issue that can cause me to lose interest is speech patterns with added words-like, you know & non word sounds. It goes with #6. Regardless of the information that can lose an audience just as fast as any of the other items you discussed. Great article thanks for all your content.

    Honestly, one of the best things I ever did was join a local Toastmasters group. If you want to learn the skills of public speaking and presentation in an environment that's encouraging, but also helps in giving advice, I recommend it. You get to make friends and contacts in different places, plus it's a fun way to improve your public engagement capabilitites.

    Antonio, this is a great video! These are tips that I had drilled into me during my bachelors and Masters programs. One thing that I would add is to keep things simple because, regardless your audience and their expertise, over complicating a presentation will make many audience members tune out. Please do an style advise for really cold winters!
    I live in a part of europe where temperatures in winter can reach about -20°C (about -4,5°F) and it's really hard to find elegant clothing that'll withstand these temperatures...
    Actually it should be easy to take layers off and still look good.
    So if you get from outside into a warm room, you can handle the Change somehow...
    Hope you can help me :)

  • @MorganKing95
    @MorganKing95 6 лет назад

    I don't know if this is an issue in the U.S, but a pet peeve I see all the time with people holding lectures/presentations in my country is to say "eh" between two sentences. Example: "Today I'm going to hold this presentation. Eh, and I will cover the following things..."
    I'd rather hear the person taking a small pause rather than hearing "eh" all the time. I also don't mind stuttering since the other person is maybe nervous or has a disability, but hearing the person saying "eh" drives me nuts.
    I also had a problem with a college professor once who literally had no eye contact; he was turning around to his left with his arms crossed and his eyes either facing the floor or the ceiling, and his way of presenting sounded more like he was philosophizing for himself.
    A third thing that I don't personally recommend, but don't mind if other people are comfortable with it, is to script the presentation. One problem is that it can sound unnatural and like you're just reciting something, and another one is that you're so determined to say a specific sentence that if you forget it, the entire presentation falls down for you and you get nervous. I therefore instead recommend writing down which topics and "chapters" you're supposed to go through, and then research so much that you can speak around them like it was an everyday conversation.

  • @jackrakes9997

    Antonio, another big mistake is not occasionally asking your audience questions to keep them involved in the presentation.

  • @mc_sea

    I feel an important point that you didn't mention was being aware of your body language. People communicate more with their body language compared to speaking and if a presenter is nervous, the audience will sense it.

    Another big mistake people make, is not making eye contact. Sure you don't have to stare down everyone, but once in awhile you want to stop looking down at the paper you're reading from or from the side you're on. Make eye contact with someone for just a few seconds to make sure people are still paying attention. Also people that don't make at least some eye contact are usually seen as either they don't know what they are talking about or are lying.

    The worst mistake that's not on this list: Thinking you know everything, when you don't.
    Everytime when someone gives an advice about my boss' presentation skill, he'd just brush it off, thinking that the person just doesn't know what he/she is talking about, no matter how good their intention was.
