Is Their Gouache as Good as their Watercolor? DaVinci Gouache Review

  • Today I am reviewing Davinci Artist Gouache. I purchased mine during the Black Friday sale at Blick where it was 60% off list: shrsl.com/4f551 More options on colors can be found on the DaVinci website: davincipaints....
    BTW the beautiful ceramic palette I featured is by FraNord Handmade on ETSY www.etsy.com/s...
    At the end of the review, I mentioned maybe adding a cadmium red and cadmium yellow to my palette but they do not offer cadmium or cobalt paint in their gouache it seems.
    Pros:
    Price/value
    Comes in large tubes
    Made in the USA
    Pigment and lightfast info included on tube
    Drys down well without cracking (if you want to make a dry palette)
    Rewets well
    Cons:
    Most colors were transparent even though they were listed as opaque
    Several colors were shiny in mass tone although they were listed as matte
    The paint has a sticky and stingy texture that is unlike the smooth and creamy consistency in gouache I am used to.
    Bottom line: These paints are most similar to the Mission Titanium class gouache or the Kueretake Gansai Tambi watercolors. If you like those paints these would be a nice option for refilling your palette. As far as a typical gouache goes these are not my personal favorite but they do have good reviews on Blick so maybe I chose poor colors or my opinion is unpopular. The white is a solid value though. Maybe try a couple of colors and see what you think.

    It was very interesting to see the swatching and comparing, especially when you looked at the same pigments in their watercolor vs the gouache. Thank you for doing this! Seeing the review definitely formed my opinion of do I want to try them or not. I can see why you wanted to review before you watched other’s opinions on them. Ah I'm so excited for this review! I love my Da Vinci gouache, especially rewetting from dry. There is no "best," only "best for you" - they're not for everyone but they're great for me! (:

      @@thefrugalcrafter I haven't had too much issue with shininess but I also use a PW4 zinc white from another brand too which might cut the shine down to be honest.
      Admittedly I'm also not super worried about it and don't pay too much attention either 🤣 it's more a victory getting to paint than anything! So I may be biased there

    Hey Lindsay! About 16 minutes in as I start writing this so not intending to comment on your full review, but I really appreciate you dedicating the time and making such an extensive and thorough one. I'm finally learning 10 years in to my art self-education journey something that seems so obvious and simple-- to use what I want, which is the perspective of the following comments.
    I love these for what they are. I took a shot in the dark coincidentally ordering some of the same colors a little before you did --Alizarin, Ultramarine, Raw and Burnt Sienna--and only really tested them recently. They were my first plays with gouache and weren't in isolation, i.e. I combined M Graham gouache and even a couple existing watercolors of hues I didn't have a gouache equivalent for--I've gotten more since then, like Ochre and Pyrrol Red in MG for example--so I couldn't assess their quality based on pure gouache properties which may result in a more critical assessment, but I was so happy with the pigmentation and reliable usability, particularly in our mutual staples of Ultramarine & Burnt Sienna, and both purely and tinting with white I still noticed a difference in look to watercolor, likely due to the larger pigment particles which reduce granulating or textural looks and do give a smoother, flatter gouache look to my eye. The Quinacridone based colors may be a little more interchangeable with the watercolor, I'll admit. Perhaps most importantly, because of their great value, I played with no fear of wasting precious paint, a trap I can be more prone to with smaller tubes. I also like the Holbein magenta, yellow & cyan in combo with these. EDIT: By the end, I saw you exactly describe how I use these, LOL. I'm sorry your final assessment is less favorable than mine, but that's ok.
    All of this is to say that might these be more transparent than other brands in isolation? Sure, but I like how they perform for how I paint, which is something I heavily pushed aside for many years because I went by "teacher knows best; I should be looking for properties they say are desirable." If a primarily or more experienced gouache painter were over my shoulder observing, they might say "Joe, you're over-thinning your paint and it's getting like watercolor," and up until recently I'd take that critical feedback very seriously, but now I'm like "well, I prefer the feel on my brush with a little more water in the mix (same with acrylics when I do, sidenote) and it still looks gouache-like to me, I'll tint with white if I really want more body, and I don't like the look of gouache that's got the bare minimum of water in it on paper, before or after it dries (it has a caked on look to me)." It helped me realize my own growth in how I see my practice, and what's funny is I heard Steve recently use thee word "terrible" to describe this gouache, and I respect his skill and opinion greatly still even though I disagree with him specifically here, so much so that if I heard that comment earlier in my journey I'd have probably steered off the paint and therefore rejected what I now know is a lovely paint to use for me.

    Thanks for the review, Lindsay. I don't know about some of the other colors but yellow gouache is notoriously transparent. I've only tried Holbein and Daniel Smith versions, but I've always found that with yellow, I have to add a layer of white before the yellow. So I don't fault them too much. I'd rather have transparent-and-need-to-add-white than full-of-fillers. But the glossiness? Erm. Because I'm obsessed, I'm still going to get the magenta gouache next sale, LOL. And I think a tube of white, since the white is nice.
    Side note: Until you added the white to your little color wheel, it looked like a cute sunsetty river scene. I need to recreate that! You inspire even when you don't intend to!

    It does seem almost like they designed their gouache to have do-it-yourself opacity. But probably the reason for the transparency would be to keep the price lower. I have to say I’m not very impressed by this gouache; it’s also got texture flaws that make me think it’s just not worth it.
    I really appreciate the time you took to thoroughly test the paint! Very interesting, for sure.

    I've been using gouache for a couple years now but have never bought any Da Vinci because of hearing about the shine. Glad to see the shine problem is confirmed so I know it's definitely not the gouache for me.
    The transparency doesn't bother me - Schmincke (often recommended as the *best* gouache), Daniel Smith, and M Graham gouache are also more transparent (sometimes very transparent) in pigments that are typically transparent. These "artist/professional" brands don't add white or opacifiers to their paints, so the natural properties of the pigment still apply. A PV19 or PB15 in gouache might be a little more opaque than their watercolors (yet is almost always rated as "opaque" or "semi-opaque"), but still much more transparent than a pigment that's typically opaque. I consider these sort of colors "mixing" colors, and combine them with white and pigments that are naturally more opaque like PR101, PR112, and PBr24. The good part is that in these brands there tends to be enough pigment packed in you can choose to add a tiny bit of zinc white and get a more opaque color without losing the saturation.
    If you're an artist who is purely after opacity, you either need to look for pigments that are naturally opaque or brands that add white and/or opacifiers to make transparent pigments appear opaque. I also have Holbein's primary mixing set and those are naturally more opaque than a typical PR122 or PB15 would ever be, and side by side with the same pigments in Daniel Smith and Schmincke it's easy to tell *something* is different about the Holbein paints. I imagine that's why Holbein is preferred by artists who want to paint large flat areas of opaque color while Schmincke and M Graham are preferred by artists who build up their gouache opacity with layers and mixing. I'm more of the latter so I usually prefer the "versatility" of pigments in their natural state as well as the smoother texture. Holbein always feels a little chalky to me, though I appreciate them when I want to work with a very limited palette and do minimal mixing.

    • @jennw6809
      @jennw6809 4 месяца назад +1

      I completely agree about your comments regarding the Holbein mixing set! I understand they add dextrin to the watercolor and I do believe they add it to the gouache too, and grind the pigments larger to achieve the opacity. I really love the texture of M. Graham right out of the tube though!

    Wow how did I miss this one? Been waiting for it. Love the watercolors... but I got three tubes of the gouache and was disappointed by the transparency and shinyness and sticky texture as well. I love their raw sienna in watercolor but it was a particularly disappointing color in the gouache. My understanding is that some companies use a larger grind of pigment, and some companies like Holbein use additives like dextrin to add opacity to their gouaches. My sense is that DaVinci is using their same watercolor grind; or close to it. Additionally they could have chosen more naturally opaque pigments in some cases (cadmiums like you mentioned, or cobalts) but they don't make those! My favorite is actually M. Graham (except the white which for some reason kinda sucks), and W&N also works great right out of the tube. Holbein and Schmincke need a bit more water and are slightly more tricky but I preferred them all to the DaVinci. I really love the Holbein white and it's super cheap on Amazon right now for some reason. I'll try drying them in pans, but I don't think I'm ever going to like that Raw Sienna!

    My only real experience with their gouache is the titanium white, of which I bought a large tube for the value (I normally use mainly Holbein or W&N). I generally use gouache dried in a travel palette, but when I went to refill the white pan, I found that it had completely yellowed and turned bad in the tube. It had been fine the last time I used it. I've not had that problem with any other gouache or brand, including some really old, cheap Talens tubes. A shame, because I really liked that white, but probably won't buy again.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  5 месяцев назад +2

      It sounds like rhe binder separated. If you still have it try sticking a BBQ skewer in the hole and stirring it up. It should be fine then. Gum arabic is yellow, I think that's what you saw.

    • @elvenham1
      @elvenham1 5 месяцев назад +1

      @thefrugalcrafter That was certainly part of the issue, but it's not like any binder separation I've had with my watercolors. It's hard to explain, but I can guarantee it's not salvageable, no amount of stirring or squishing the tube changed it. I would say it's just a bad tube, but it was good at first.

      @@elvenham1You use W&N white gouache? I bought a big tube years ago in hopes of using it, but it has been the runniest stuff I have. I don't have to squeeze it out, I barely turn it and it begins dripping out. I can shake it and shake it, but it doesn't get any better. As you can imagine, it doesn't add much opacity to anything, either. I feel I must have a bad tube because I doubt many people would be buying it if it performed like this for everyone. I also have tube of Holbein's white (sadly, my only Holbein gouache) because I had seen some reviews that showed it as one of the most opaque white gouaches. It is nice, and NOTHING like this one from W&N. How does your white W&N compare to your white Holbein gouache? I am wondering if I should give it another chance?

    • @letym2271
      @letym2271 3 месяца назад

      @CarolinaCarolina-ph9mx i have the same problem with the white, just let it dry for a little bit and its opacity will come back with a punch. The Holbein white is more opaque for sure, but also more expensive in the West.

    • @CarolinaCarolina-ph9mx
      @CarolinaCarolina-ph9mx 3 месяца назад

      @@letym2271 I am glad you responded. It seems there may be a real problem with the consistency of the W&N gouache. It may be cheaper than the Holbein, but if it is thinner/less opaque, and takes more time and effort to make it work, then even being the cheaper product doesn't necessarily make it less expensive when all things are considered. I think I will avoid it from now on. I enjoy the colored W&N gouache, but I have yet to try any of the Holbein other than the white (due to the cost). Also, another option to gouache if you need to add some white back to a watercolor painting is a matte acrylic white - esp if you only need to add it in a few spots. :)

    Thanks for doing this review. You've confirmed pretty much what I've heard about them. I'm pretty new to using gouache. I've had a few tubes of Davinci for a while (never really used them😅) and I got the Holbein mixing set you recommended a while back. I've been experimenting with what I have lately and overall I think the Holbein are a better gouache paint. That being said I feel the Titanium white gouache by Davinci is wonderful. I've been using it for years to add highlights to my watercolor (It's pretty opaque). I'm now using my Davinci Gouache (which, excluding titanium white, are vibrant, just not opaque) to custom mix colors with my Holbein Gouache. I never thought of adding white to the Davinci colors like you did. I'll have to give that a try.

    The imp in me is wondering how this gouache would look next to Denise Soden's Embrace Opacity watercolor set that DaVinci has.

    PS: 90% of my everyday palette has been DV for 5 years. I love their vibrancy, price, and who DOESN'T love Marcello!? Lol. I find their wc greens, sap, leaf, to be very shiny, thought it was me using too close to mass tone, but after this review, I see even their gouache is mirror-like. Feel like we need to hold a Memorial Service for all of our DV tubes...😪

      I don't have many of their green in watercolor, I have viridian but have not noticed a sheen. The gouache is odd tho.

    This is distressing, as I now have tons of tubes of the same wc colors from DV. I buy gouache for the opaque convenience, now I have to add white. Geez. Also, I keep my new paint tubes in the fridge before I first open them, helps. Anyway, thank you for this enlightening review. :)

    I thank you for the review. I do not own gouache. I wanted to know what it is and what it is not. I kind of wanted to know what all the hoopla is about. They look like watercolor but more bold pigments. I will wait awhile to purchase anything. If I do puchase, I will go small as I do most art supplies.

    Oh Lindsay you tried so hard to be nice about this gouache! What an odd paint though!
    BTW, the podcast with Angela Fehr was great, it was interesting to get an insight into the thought process of both making art and running a business. Also reassuring to know that artists I admire worry about the same things I do with their art!

    Thank you for this review, and you saved me some money because I had been curious about trying a few tubes of their gouache as well since the price is pretty good. I don't really paint with gouache other than to use some white gouache here or there on a painting to bring back some lost white (plus some tubes that are almost forgotten because I don't know what to do with them). As I watched this, I was wondering if there is really any reason to buy many tubes of colored gouache (other than convenience) if I already have lots of watercolor paint that I could simply mix with white? Also, artist's watercolors (Daniel Smith, W&N, etc.) are more pigmented generally than gouache, so I wouldn't I be able to get results as good as gouache if I just mixed a bit of watercolor in with some white gouache? (and better than this shiny DV gouache, too!) Frankly, I think you may even be able to get gouache-like results with student grade watercolors. Heck, maybe even easier to do since many already have opaque binders. Conversely, I don't know if I would be as inclined to use a bad gouache as a watercolor paint. Watercolor has properties of transparency, and even of flow and fluidity on wet paper that you likely won't find in a gouache - even a gouache that sits on the border between watercolor and gouache. However, if you use your watercolor in a more opaque fashion, and you don't do much wet on wet work, then I guess it would be okay. I don't know. I am curious about gouache, but also don't want to spend much money on it other than a few colors if I can mostly DIY it with what I already have. 🙂

      Adding white to watercolors will give gouache like effects but reduce the saturation and make the color more pastel. A good gouache will be Opaque, matte and saturated. I recommend a few mixing g colors I a high quality gouache if you want gouache effects. The mixing set if holbein and Dan Smith will give you a huge variety of colors. Shinhan set of 12 is great too!

      @@thefrugalcrafterThank you for your response, and you aren't kidding! 🙃I actually played a bit with my watercolors plus the gouache after I wrote my comment, and it was too weak for what I was looking for, and I wasn't impressed, so pulled out a few tubes of W&N gouache, and there was a nice difference in saturation. I think I may do as you suggest and eventually buy more to play with - but not DV. I like DS and Holbein products, but will look into the Shinhan. Very glad you made that video so I didn't purchase gouache I wouldn't have liked. Thank you. 🙂

    Hullo Lindsay, I have that love/hate relationship with gouache, I know that I have mentioned this before, but you have a lot of subscribers and commenters too! DaVinci Paints gouache was the first gouache I used with my watercolor painting! Yes, I am one of “those” painters that until quite recently never used white in my watercolor paintings!
    I used Turners Design Gouache for my in house and freelance work for graphic design firms when I was first out of college and I have zero pieces from my time doing that work. I am curious about how the paint pigments are ground down and just how much bigger the gouache paints are in these paints? I am also curious about why you did not buy the mixing set? I know as an artist we have favorite colors and we buy the colors we like and are more likely to be happy using! Thank you for sharing your opinions on these supplies, I appreciate your thoughts on these paints. I am such a fan of DaVinci watercolors, but I am still struggling with white and watercolor! I am waiting for some Nicker Poster color paint. This is supposed to be the paint Studio Ghibli uses for painting their movies! Maybe I can avoid the disappointment I feel when using gouache?

      I didn't buy the mixing set because I ordered from Blick, and they didn't stock it. I prefer to order from Blick as they sell other products I need, and they were priced a bit lower than davinci's site. After ordering the gouache I did order watercolors from the DaVinci site because they had a good offer, but I didn't want more gouache. Also, I prefer the colors I chose to what was in their mixing set. If these colors are so transparent (and sold as opaque), I bet the ones in the mixing set are too. That doesn't bother me as much as the shine some of the colors have when used in mass-tone. That's hard to overlook. I know you love DaVinci, and their watercolor is lovely, but the gouache (except for titanium white) isn't ready for prime time, in my opinion.

      @@thefrugalcrafter I do accept your evaluation and believe your assessment! I only have purchased the White gouache from DaVinci. I have used mostly Turners as well as the Holbein gouache. I even was gifted the Arteza gouache and was not impressed. I believe the current resurgence of gouache, the Jelly's and so on. This has given gouache a new place in the artists toolbox! I still remember when if you told someone you used gouache in a painting they actually laughed at you! Gouache has been derided as a tool for advertisers and not a fine art tool or medium. I am glad that gouache has risen in the fine art hierarchy, I believe this is because the pigments used are so much better than they were in the past. I still know people who do not think of gouache as a permanent medium! Yes, even some watercolor societies are still disallowing white in a painting! I have not entered a show in a very long time. Yet I was approached just last week after I made a post about entering a spring show. I asked about rules and there was that no white rule! It still lives! Not everyone is enlightened and as free spirited as so many online artists! Paint your joy ! Etc. These are in the multi media categories, not watercolors. Sorry for the long reply I guess I was just venting my frustration on closed minds. Please take care and "Don't let the Bastards get ya down!"

    Lindsay, you recommend the himi miya gouache for ease of use? I find it so gummy and sticky…I’m struggling with it but I don’t want to give up and let it go to waste 😅 I find the caran dache studio gouache pans a lot easier to use, but I wonder if that’s because I’m used to painting with watercolours and working from pans. I fear I’m not actually improving my gouache technique 😅
    My himi miya gouache did dry up and has been reconstituted with water…maybe that’s messed up the consistency 🤔 It’s either me or the paint that is the problem - but probably me 🤣

    Do you think using a mixing white as opposed to titanium white would give it more opacity without the tinting strength?
    I have a large tube of Lukas PW6, but it's not bright white like other brands. I bought it on sale at Jerry's Arterama when it was on sale and I'd rather not waste it.

    I’m asking before the end of your video- but have you tried m graham or schmincke’s gouache? If so- how do they compare? I tried a few m graham and I felt they were more transparent than the few I’d tried before. They weren’t bad at all -just different than I expected.
