So many things to think about when looking at these images. Not photography challenges, but the softness of the colors, and the shapes, and the feel of the frost. I love an image that i can quietly step into. Thank you.
Simon, I can't put into words how captivated I was watching this video. You have amazing presentation and photographic skills, please keep the videos coming. The photos are beautiful and love the end to see making your own prints and how you present them. Massive thumbs up again from me!
Thank you Simon for sharing your moments of peace and relaxation through your photography. This is something that I also strive for, a feeling of peace out and about with the camera and just feeling free.
outstanding images Simon, and a wonderful vlog - thank you for the opportunity to "come along". Please do not talk less - it is, for me, great to see and hear how you interact with the environment, and don't just "go for the image". Also wonderful to see Meg bounding around all the time - so much added joy
Thanks, Simon, for really inspiring me as I start out a new phase of photography as I retire from my old role as a lecturer in woodland and tree science. I love it that you are not scared to name the trees and plants - to me this is all part of connecting with the landscape you are photographing. Living in the SE I'm miles away from such scenery and such frosts so you're inspiring me to head north. My daughter was at Uni in Durham and I vowed I would go back with my camera one day, but never thought I'd consider the heart of winter, so thanks for showing me what I might have been missing - very excited!
Thank you very much! My knowledge of trees and plants is limited but I'm working on it as your personal connection with the landscape is very important, as you say. These conditions are extremely rare but winter can be such a great time for photography. I hope you visit is productive! Cheers.
The Rowan tree in the haw frost is amazing. Every time i look at it i see something different. Definatly want that print. Keep up the vlogs, so inspiring.
Thank you very much, Martyn! A recent workshop client has just bought an A2 copy of that print :). The conditions were amazing and I really hope it happens again this winter!
I love when a photographer pops up in my feed unexpectedly and ends up taking my breath away. I just returned from a mini getaway to the mountains and picked up my camera for the first time in ages due to a crazy work life imbalance. As corny as it sounds I felt my soul return to peace as I took shots of Canadian Geese and their lake take offs and landings. I can tell that photography does the same thing for yours. Your images speak to my soul and I want to create images that speak to me the same way, thank you for your inspiration. Side note: living in Alberta, Canada we have more than a few hoar frost days a winter, I’m excited for our next one!
Great story telling. One of the first times I've watched a complete start to finish showing location, shoot, post and print. Really shows the process we go through as photographers. Also really love the contrast to your cool demeanour explaining the image while your pup bounces through the frame in the background. Here on the Gold Coast, Australia we don't ever get a frost like you did but I do look forward to the next foggy morning. You've inspired me to shoot more woodland.
Finally I love how you let us participate in the thought process. In most cases we don't see the scene when you discuss the composition options. We see you talking. We look at your jacket, your gloves with with the bare index finger and of course your face. But its all about the hoarfrost on the tree, the rocks, the slight mist, the breathing space that the tree needs. We just need to imagine it. I am coming to the conclusion that this is not an obstacle, but an advantage. Thank you, Simon! My other thought is: These are all nice single trails and likely you rode them in your earlier life with lot of fun. How far do you look different at the landscapes now compared to before your injury? I started shooting again and still do mountain biking and ski mountaineering. What I found is that still I am much attracted by the same views I enjoyed the most before I rejoined photography. Lines were and still are important. I used to say I love riding and climbing ridges the most. Doing photography they attract me for the visible or the not visible and only imagined endpoint where our eyes are taken, for the perspective we look at it and finally the feel they create in us as the viewer: being above the lowlands of life, being engaged, being open, being free. For me this is photography: creating that strong feel in the viewer.
It was a real joy watching your video. Pictures at the end almost look like infrared, the contrasts, softness and muted colours give them so much depth.
Wow simon! Some people might get 1 or 2 excellent images but you've got several stunners. And when one thinks it's stops there you were able to shoot a great video as well on the go. Love it. Cheers!
Looks like some amazing conditions Simon, and you used it well to get some unique, intimate landscapes. I loved the beautiful detail and gorgeous contrasts of tone and texture you captured. It was great to hear how you were bring those elements together. We don’t get weather like that much here in Australia, so I haven’t shot in those conditions, but would love the opportunity one day. I’ve got to say, that image of that tree in amongst those rocks was stunning and your use of negative space was excellent, framing the scene perfectly. No wonder it’s a location you got back to. Thanks for letting us tag along with you on your adventures.
Thank you very much for your thoughts and feedback, Andrew :) I'm very pleased you enjoyed it! I've never ever seen conditions like that over the nearby moors - it was such a rare treat and I was very fortunate to have been there :)
Gorgeous work. I love that you hand signed on the border below the printed area, and then added your mark, also not on the photo composition. I wish more people used this method rather than have their mark intrude on the actual photographed scene.
I am a new subscriber and am drawn to your conversation, your images are gorgeous- it is very helpful to hear your thoughts about what you see and capture. As many people who think there is too much conversation- I am certain there are more of us who enjoy your thoughts and feelings! Plus, Meg puts a smile on my face every time 😄
Many thanks, Susan! This is an older video but you'll be pleased to know I still have the conversation but with plenty of visual overlays. Thanks for subscribing!
Love the scenes you capture, it is a different aspect but beautiful. The frost photographs are amazing. living in Australia we don't get the frosts like you do in England, but you have jolted my curiosity and I will have a look at the woodlands in my area. Thank you once again.
My god watching this makes me want to get up and get out, it just shows that you dont need to venture far, but what you do need is an eye for a good composition and be aware of the limitations you are working with. Great work Simon and a well presented video, very relaxed like your photography
Hi Ian. That's very kind of you - thank you very much! You're right, you don't need to venture far unless you want big dramatic views. If I didn't try and make the most of what I have nearby then I'd rarely shoot at all, which would be a real shame. Thanks again! :)
Great video Simon, Some of your best work ever! The tree with the wall is fantastic. The frost makes it. I am afraid that I would have done just what you said " run around like a chicken with its head cut off". Spectacular work thank you as always.
Another fantastic vlog Simon. Looked extremely cold up there but no doubt very satisfying and peaceful. Great images and carry on the good work. Might be nice to do more on the post and printing elements.
I love many things about this video. First of all, although someone was absolutely freezing, someone was absolutely having the time of her life. LOL. I couldn't stop chuckling as she was bounding around and found something delicious to eat under the tree. Secondly, hoar frost...I have never seen it in person and it created such a magical, fairy tale-like atmosphere that translated so well into your images. I also appreciated seeing it falling to the ground-it's not like clumps of snow, but like shingles! Wow. Also love the aerial shots; adds a whole 'nother dimension to your videos. I thought the custom logo on your final print with your signature was very cool too.
HI Sarah. Thank you very much for watching and for your wonderful comments - they're very much appreciated! Haha, that something delicious under the tree was actually the frost/ice shingles, she seemed to like crunching on them :)
Simon, that is the most inspiring (and entertaining) video I've seen. Your slow, careful and considered approach to everything you do is just the lesson I need to learn and your results speak for themselves. You have Thomas Heaton to thank for pointing me your way. I can't wait for the next episode.
Thank you for another great video. From someone who has an interest in photography and moving away from current career, this video as well as the last couple I've been watching has been eye opening for me and how I may want to progress. You are showing me how to see things in a new light (pun intended). Inspirational!
Wow, Simon, a lot of the places you just drop your video camera to shoot your “walk-past” B-roll look good enough to be among my best stills! Don’t know what that says about me, but I’ve so enjoyed going back through your old Y/T catalog during our “down time” here in New York. Learning so much, thanks man.
Anothér great video Simon. Love watching the beautiful British countryside in winter time whilst I sit here in the summer heat of Auckland, New Zealand! Really inspires me to get out a shoot more!
Really enjoyed this longer video, thank you Simon. Such amazing conditions - I know I would have been running around like a goon, snapping anything and everything. But then I wouldn't come away with such stunning images! Such a helpful lesson in composition and so inspiring. Plus your dog (Meg?) is beginning to be a bit of a show stealer. Look forward to the next one :)
Great stuff. I love a bit of frost. I ventured out a couple of weekends ago but had a nasty cold so I didn't stay out long. Got some great shots though so it was well worth it. I hope we get another cold snap so I can spend some more time out. Looking forward to the next video.
Yet another superb video Simon, for me they are the best on youtube.com Please don't change anything as I enjoy your thoughts and reasoning for each of your images. The production is perfect and of course Meg is the star of the show lol.
Excellent work Simon, what super conditions you had. Very informative information about taking your time and not worrying about maximising your time. I absolutely love that image that you printed out at the end. I bet the print looks gorgeous.
Hello Simon, Another awesome video. I for one do very much appreciate listening to your thoughts as you seek out you photography shots. Please don’t stop including them. Your hard work is evident throughout your videos. It is my hope by watching your videos, to become a better photographer. i have to say i very much like your editing skills used in your videos and music. Thanks again, looking forward to you next. Be well.
Hi John. Many thanks for your kind words and support - much appreciated! If I can help inspire your own work, even just a bit, then I'd be delighted with that! :)
Only your third Vlog, I think it's brilliant, and as someone else has mentioned, cinematography is excellent, really well done Simon.......and please keep up the good work.
Somehow I missed this video, but I'm glad I discovered it. I am always looking for a posting of your work. Beautifully composed images. I feel that the images are all fantastic and gallery worthy. Well done on a task that can prove difficult to pull off.
Hi Tony. Thank you very much for your kind words - much appreciated! I'm glad you found this video but please do check if you have notifications turned on :)

Meg is having the time of her life! I just love watching her running around!
Simon... Wow... More videos please! Awesome work!

Glad you enjoyed it, Andrew. Photography with Meg as company is definitely my therapy :)
The image at 20:38, I love it. There's a real harmony to that composition, both in terms of space and colour. Beautiful shot.
outstanding images Simon, and a wonderful vlog - thank you for the opportunity to "come along". Really enjoy capturing moody images such as this with mist and fog. Amazing how the weather changes a scene so much. Great pictures.
Many thanks, Scot :)
You've done it again; sublime. And your images are intensely captivating. Thank you, Simon. 🙌🙌🙌
What an amazing day of photography and so beautifully captured on video. Loved the images.
Thanks again, Nigel :)

A man and his dog, I love it! Not to mention the awesome photos!

Just beautiful for every one of the 22 minutes! Absolutely loved the photos! Thank you Simon.
Just love the simplicity of your work .. A great inspiration 👌🏽

Really gorgeous.
I love the nuance you achieve in your photos. Composition is perfect!

Absolutely exquisite images, Simon. And I second what everyone else has said about your videos, so professionally done.
not sure who has more fun on these trips... you or your dog!
If she's happy then I'm happy ;)

Thank you very much, Anne-Marie!
This video left me speachless... I am amazed. I know awesome is an over used word, but this vlog is awesome! Greetings from Bulgaria.

Great idea of the Seal and signature.
Nice one, Simon, the hoar frost really adds drama. Cheers.

Thank you very much, Ian. It was definitely cold and it was the first time I've had to wear the big jacket so I was pretty cosy :)
Simon you are an artist!
Awesome video, can’t wait for winter where I am in Canberra. We often have a solid frost like that it’s great stuff to photograph.

Finally a new video,.. ;) Thanks.
Wonderful first few videos Simon! Your mixture of compositions is terrific and the drone/"action" footage is great context.
Excellent work Simon, what super conditions you had. Very informative information about taking your time and not worrying about maximising your time. I absolutely love that image that you printed out at the end. I bet the print looks gorgeous.
Thank you very much, Damian! Very pleased that you found some of the narrative useful. I'll have to post that image on Twitter and the like :)
