scrapbooking 101 choosing an album

  • This is the 2nd video in my scrapbooking 101 series. Today we talk about the different options available for scrapbook albums. Please not that these albums can be found in most sizes including 6"x6", 8"x8", 8.5"x11" and 12"x12" as well as others.
Think about the shelf space you have before purchasing an album. If space is tight an 8.5"x11" or 8"x8" album might be a better choice.
The typical types of scrapbooks are:
Post bound albums are the most common album, they typically come with 10 page protectos to hold 20 layouts but you can buy spacers and more page protectors for these. These are best for people who want 50 layouts or less in a book because the more spacers you add the more wobbly the book can become. I used this type of book for a couple years until i found the D-Ring. I had to more all the pages from one of these books to a D-Ring after the book fell apart with too much use. I consider it a lighter duty option. The pros is that there is no gap between pages for a seamless viewing experience.
D-Ring (3 ring binder) I prefer a 12"x12" D Ring album by We R Memory Keepers but it does take up more space, the album closed is 12.5"x15"x3.5" and I fill one every year. Also the rings create a gap between pages meaning a 2 page spread will have a gap between them. I does not bother me. I also like that I can use 12x12 or 8.5"x11" pages in these and it is easy to rearrange the pages.
Strap Hinge albums are more compact than D-Ring but not a common to find, You will not have a gap between page layouts. These albums are more difficult to rearrange pages or add more pages but they are a sturdy, quality choice for larger books and they are easier to hold and look though than the D-Ring.
Spiral bound This type of book will appeal to art journalers or those who like to work directly on the page. I like this choise for kids too. They are typically less expensive to buy and the cardstock is included so it will save money down the road. The downsides to this is that you can't add pages and the book becomes too thick for the spine as more photos are added.
What album do you use? Let me know in the comments!

I have several ongoing scrap book projects, i.e., Christmas, birthdays, vacations, heritage, which I keep updated yearly. I have used the post bound albums but changed them to the Snapload converters, which allow room for a lot more pages. I now consider myself more of a paper crafter than scrapbooker, however. I love making mini albums (for myself and gifts) and love to try out every unusual project I see on You Tube. Recently finished a paper cake, with the cake wedges made out of triangle boxes. Turned out great, but now discover there is a template available for it. Guess I do everything the hard way. Love your videos - trying to learn the basics of watercolors from you. Lots of fun.

Hi, my favorite albums are the CM's 12x12. I took a trip to Hawaii many yrs ago. It was to visit my bff who's hubby was stationed there. I got the pic developed right away, and looked thru all the maps and such I had saved. Then made a wonderful album that I look at often. I am.so glad I did, as my bff passed away way too soon. So now I can remember her silliness, and love I. All those pix. Plus it was my dream trip... I also made both of my son's "This is Your Life" albums. Following them for. Birth thru their 20's
Th a was over 20 years ago and they are still standing up thru the frequent handling etc. I start making mini books a few years ago for individual events or people. (Ie: my grandson Masons first year, for his other Nana). I have been on the lookout for similar styled albums. But haven't found any. Thanks for your basics of scrapbooking series. Jess

Love this series Lindsay. Thank you so much for sharing all your ideas with us. I recently joined a scappers club and I will share this with them as well. I'm actually working on a scrap book for my Mom's 90th birthday. And, for sure, the worst part is the photos. I am only in the photo picking stage at this point and making them into jpeg's. It is a lot of work but I am sure it will all be worth it in the end. Can't wait for the next video!! THX

I started out with 12x12 and would just stare at a page and it would take me forever. I'm a card and mini album maker, so 12x12 just felt overwhelming. Then I discovered 8x8 and digital scrapbooking. Love the size and can zip through a bunch of photos and pages! My sister is like a professional scrapbooker and loves 12x12. She has trouble "shrinking down" to make cards! LOL When my late husband died of brain cancer, my sister asked for photos and memories. She sent me two 12x12 scrapbooks of our life together and one of just our time after his diagnosis. I sat for literally hours and looked and cried. I have them forever!

You are so sweet! Thank you. My sister took some photos, the little bit of journaling I gave her and made these stunning pages for me. "I have them forever" is the most important part of my previous post! Keep a journal with fond memories, tender and/or difficult moments, your favorite quotes, and information about all your photos. I have a journal I kept during the last 6 months and I asked him silly things, serious things, and things that were not important at all at the time but became important in those scrapbooks.

Target had the We R Memory Keeper Albums for $19.99, but I found one at Tuesday Morning (if you have one) for $7.00 (What a bargain!) You are right about the size--I have no shelf that will accommodate them. I like the strap albums that Creative Memories sold, but they are out of business. You can find them on Ebay or at thrift stores (sometimes). I expecially like the D ring albums because you can move the pages around so quickly!

I was a quilter and swore I would never scrap, but then my daughter invited me to a Saturday get together and that was my first exposure to scrapping and criketing. I would never again return to quilting. Then I was invited by a friend and gallery owner to do a travel water color class. So guess what! My scrapping is gathering dust and cobwebs... not to mention that Creative Memories went belly up. I bought some extra stuff when I heard they were applying for bankruptcy. What's the first thing to go when the economy sucks? Certainly NOT feeding your family. So that's what happened to scrapping. Now you should see how my "art studio" has overwhelmed one end of my large kitchen table. It's a hoot. But I still have my beautiful basement studio for scrapping and quilting. Oh... and before that there was stained glass. I have an inactive studio full of old flux and beautiful glass. I'm a mess. My latest hobby is free though. Watching tons of youtube videos. I could spend hours on my couch with my laptop overheating on my lap. Keeps me warm in winter though.

Strap hinge albums and pages are still available - not hard to find. If looking for CM style, Ahni & Zoe by CM still offers them in a variety of colors. And for folks wanting to incorporate more flexibility to those strap hinge albums, there are side and top loading full 12 x12 pages as well as protector/pages that will hold 4x6 pics kinda like Project Life style that so many manufacturers make for d-rings and post bound. Both CTMH and Ahni & Zoe by CM make the full page protectors to fit in strap hinge. I recently saw that Heritage Makers will soon be offering strap hinge albums. I called them but their is a quality issue delaying their debut so... Shop the other companies still.

Hobby Lobby carries 3 straphindge albums & has refills for them. I've been told the refills fit Creative Memories albums. They also sell posts for postbound albums, one package has posts that are maybe 1" long. I would think it'd be better to replace the small ones with 1 big post.

  • @lisafolkmann6781
    @lisafolkmann6781 7 лет назад

I also use the D-ring Albums made by We R Memory Keepers. I didn't like the "post-type" - I found that even when you added the "extenders" to make the albums hold more photos, it made the album less sturdy, and it would "wobble" around. What I do is this: Very frequently, I go to joann.com and find the leather (it may be faux leather; I'm not sure) 12"x12" albums. As I said, I check there frequently, because when those particular albums go on sale, the "good colors" sell out quickly. The albums go on sale for 40% off every once in a while, but they go on sale for 50% off only 2 or 3 times a year. THOSE are the sales I wait for. Also, be sure to get the "leather" ones, because their other ones that are about $10.00 less by "We R Memory Keepers" in price are covered in paper, which is - why, I'm guessing, why"The Frugal Crafter" had trouble with the two of them she bought. Also, she is absolutely right about the "We R Memory Keepers" albums being long (wide, deep?) - anyway, about 15 inches, and you need to have shelves that are deep enough to hold them without them hanging over the edge of the shelf. My husband turned our Guest Room into a Craft Room for me, but we didn't think about making the shelves deep enough. The first time I removed an album from the shelf, it left a space where all of the white shelf paint came off and the bare wood showed thru. So I definitely recommend the "We R Memory Keepers" Leather 12"x12" album for it's sturdiness and roominess. Just be sure that your shelf for your albums are big enough. Oh, one more tip: When the albums are on sale at joann.com for 50% off, I also look for a Free Shipping Coupon that can be used online. I go to Google and type in "online coupons" or "online coupons + Free Shipping". You usually have to buy a certain amount - $49.00 or something similar - to use the online coupon. But you can't do much better than getting a quality album for 50% off without having to pay shipping. Also, I have noticed when I've gone to joann.com, they often have a Free Shipping Offer, for instance: "Free Shipping with $99 Purchase". Then, I'll still check out the "online coupon websites", and find that they have a "Free Shipping with $49 Purchase" - which is a much better deal than the deal on the website. So good luck, Ladies - this was an excellent video on albums, wasn't it? :)

    Hello!
I recently bought a blank vintage scrapbook from Savers (a thrift store) to capture memories of the adventures my boyfriend, his daughter, and I get up to. In the back it is marked as having been made in Italy under a signature "H??e Luvra". It's not a super clear signature. The scrapbook is bound like a book, and each thick page of cardstock has a thin leaf of paper bound to the front of it on one side. Is the thin paper like a page protector? Am I supposed to do anything with it?

I do a lot of digital scrapbook pages i have videos of some of them on my channel. I get them printed in 12 x 12 size at scrapbooksplease dot com I usually print them in matt and wait for sales when they do them for 99 cents a page I've really like this place and the quality of their prints, 8 x 8 size I will print at home. I have also made DVD albums with my digital scrapbooks see the videos on my page that's kind of what it would look like on a DVD that could be played in any DVD player which is another option to save space.

Obviously you can't put them all in frames LOL There's not enough wall space! TFS Hugs ~ Pat

sometimes you need to trim down the page to fit, put it in a page protector and see! I have lumpy pages in my books ad they are fine;)

I like to trim the edge of my 12 x 12 sheet to 11 3/4". They fit into the page protector so much better with bulky embellishments and tags.

I am begining to think that you are a evil siren of crafts yet another thing I just want to try.... my other half is burried under "craft items" for texture, sticking, gluing..... you know those things you just cant bare to recycle. My postman thinks im some strange shopping addict due to delivering so many packages from abroad, in my endless search for beads, and lets not mention the second hand ebay stamp collection. The little craft shop knows me by sight and my debit card, oh yes and there is the art shop, I cant get in with my scooter or wheelchair so the manager brilliantly does avpavement service. A year ago I was a crafter here and there, doing my artwork cards and the odd bit of quilling in between going to my university lectures.... today after watching every one of your videos religiously I have tried more crafts than ks healthy (and if I could fit a mini kiln or glass torch in my tiny flat without fear ov burning the house down a few more). Thank all thst is crafty in this world that papermart are not global (I am getting better at Internet resource searches though ... poor postman). I am back to finishing my degree in october after having a year out for health reasons but am not sure under which project my notes are stashed, and am considering doing my final psych research project on craft addiction!
Lindsay you are fabulous amazing and inspirational but my hamster is worried every time I watch your channel that I may end up making hamster accessories .... loom knitted hats addapted make great hamster sunggle houses ! So on to scrapbooking.... anyone in the uk can you tell me the best place for scrapbooking materials that wont put me in bigger debt than my student loans?
With crafty painty gluey hugs Lindz x

hahaha:) I think you can use your current supplies to scrap with, you just need photos and an album with page protectors, I'm sure you have everything else;)

+thefrugalcrafter I seriously dont think with your influence I can ever have enough supplies lol.... but your right it is the albums and page wallets that I need, ive seen memory keepers on create and craft but at those prices the hamster an I would be homeless! I am sooooooo jealous of your country it doesnt charge you through the nose to be creative, one of the best uk stamp suppliers is clarity stamps, and Barbra Gray comes up with beautiful and sometimes crazy new ways to use them ... so after watching her either on create and craft or on youtube (and the blog too ... I would recommend her to your viewers who like stamping and gelli plates as she comes up with some very effective techniques) you end up loving the images she produces and want a go buy the stamps (which are amazing quality for clear stamps you can do a lot more with them than normal clear ones) cost us nearly £20 per set of 3 to 5. Its earth shattering on my budget lol so hooray for your frugality, but just you wait till ask a crafter comes back ... the list of questions is ever growing ....
Three cheers for the Lindsay the frugal crafter... hip hip horay, hip hip horay, hip hip horay as us brits say x

I have all different sizes and types of scrapbooks, none of them are filled.:( I think that I started feeling over whelmed with trying to fill a 12x12 page when I first started. I have bought the smaller ones also. I think I am just addicted to buying the products. So many pretty papers and embellishments, when you see the supply's in the stores you have ideas, when you get home the items are put away and you forget you have them because you didn't have time or take time to do the project when it was on your mind. I need to start pulling it all out again and get busy. Thank you for this series, maybe now I will. :) hugs

Would your favorite d ring album be sturdy enough for my special needs daughter to not destroy? She is 15 in body and about 6 in mind. She LOVES pictures. They mean a lot to her and bring her joy but the covers end up falling off. She has the pages in a drawer. They weren't scrapbooked. Id really love to be able to give her an album that would stay in tact. I want to scrapbook a separate album

How about photographing your pages and printing copies at 8"x8" and putting them in a post bound 8x8 album. The smaller size and lighter pages would be more durable and you do not have to worry about the originals getting damaged;)

ok first let me say...Please don't judge...I have a ton of supplies and I have never scrapbooked...I literally have a how dresser draw full of stickers...I know but really I think most people who craft have way more stuff than they will ever use...ok here is my question, I have a friend who is having a baby (yea) she is not "crafty"...I would love to buy her a album and put already made sheet in it for her just to add photos to. its her first child (they really didn't think they could have one!!) so I want to do this for her...how would one go about doing one that is generic enough so she could add Radom photos? thanks
