Great stuff, Nyango Star is a bit of a legend (and did you notice the play on words with his name and the similarity to Ringo Star?). I think there is another video where he covers 'Akatsuki' cos-playing as Su complete with the pony tail and fringe (that's bangs for any Americans reading this).

      Yes ! Love the Su-metal cosplay ! :-)
The name is actually 3 puns, Ringo Star is one, Nyango is Japanese for the cat's meow and ringo means apple in Japanese.
And apples is also the biggest export product of the region he's trying to promote.

You know, the kind of comment that aspires to Rick Wagner level of knowledge and expertise. Hopefully good for context.

I first learned about にゃんごすたー's life in this movie.
The road to rock stars is difficult and very dangerous…
However, にゃんごすたー will definitely reach the Hollywood hills!

  • @lennyg47
    @lennyg47 5 лет назад +23

Ah, so you met Nyango Star, a spirit of a dead cat reincarnated as an apple whose goal in life is to become the greatest drummer in the world and make it to Hollywood.
    Nyan is Japanese for meow.
    Ringo is Japanese for apple
    Ringo Star is a drummer.
And that's how Nyango Star got his name.
Nyango Star is an official tourism mascot of Kuroishi City, a rural farming community in Japan’s northern prefecture of Aomori known for it's apples (see how it's all makes sense, apple, cat, drummer ;)
In Japan there are thousands of mascots, known as yuru-kyara who promote everything from cities, towns, villages, post offices, hospitals, groceries, and even prisons. They have annual competitions for most popular and beloved yuru-kyara in Japan. It is typically not appropriate to address the person inside the suit. It is considered polite to suspend your disbelief and address the yuru-kyara, not the performer. In Japan the rules of conduct for yuru-kyara prohibit them (the actors inside the suit) from speaking, so all official yuru-kyara are usually accompanied by a handler in public.
Nyango Star is a member of an all yuru-kyara band called CHARAMEL, which stands for Character Metal.
    Other CHARAMEL members are:
Kapal, a water goblin, on bass.
Akkuma, an evil lazy alien boy bear, on guitar.
And CHARAMEL's perpetual headbanger, and most metal singer you will ever hear, Funassyi, a 1,882 year old genderless pear fairy. The reason Funassyi can sing (and speak and scream) is because Funassyi was rejected for the official position of yuru-kyara to represent Funassyi's hometown of Funabashi city, so Funassyi became an independent mascot, and does not have to follow official yuru-kyara rules.
CHARAMEL and individual yuru-kyara members play many shows for charity. Real identities of all yuru-kyara artists are kept strictly secret, so no one knows who the real drummer is inside Nyango Star.
Here is a live performance by CHARAMEL of their song called Charamel (it's autobiographical)
    ruclips.net/video/Z1XXSLzf148/видео.html
This song is in English, but luckily this video also has English subtitles, trust me, you'll need them.
And here is Nyango Star cover of BabyMetal's Akatsuki while cosplaying as Su-Metal

First of all, thank you for doing this, it's great to see others post long comments like this. :-)
Actually, (as I understand it) I think you got one thing wrong in your comment: You are right Nyangoi is Yuru-chara mascot, but Yuru-chara actually means it's not an official mascot, unofficial mascot. This is also the reason Nyango and all the other Yuru-chara don't talk. They are not an official spokes person.

@@autohmae Thank you. I appreciate the feedback. However, please allow me to explain. What I have learned in my research is that there are several different types of yuru-kyara, including those who officially and unofficially represent their city or prefecture (the latter may also be described as independent).
Official yuru-kyara are literally employees of either the municipal authority or corporate entity which they represent. It seems there are many paths to becoming official yuru-kyara. Some cities held open public contests for creating the character, other cities accepted submissions for consideration only from specific people (artists, historians, designers, etc). Some cities simply "hired" an already developed character from a design firm or from an individual.
For example, Funassyi applied to be the official yuru-kyara of Funabashi City, literally to be employed by the city, but was rejected while the city chose Funaemon as it's official yuru-kyara. But Funassyi, being an entrepreneurial spirit, decided to represent Funabashi City as a citizen, independently of the municipal authority, thus becoming unofficial yuru-kyara of Funabashi city. While Funassyi exploded in popularity, in large part due to its breaking of the yuru-kyara rules of conduct (speaking and moving fast), Funaemon remains largely unknown.
A more serious situation recently unfolded in Susaki city where the reputation of the official Susaki city yuru-kyara, Shinjo-kun, was threatened by the antics of Susaki's unofficial yuru-kyara, Chiitan, (who was created by same artists / designers who also made Shinjo-kun) because to an undiscerning eye both mascots appear similar (both look like cartoon otters)
While Shinjo-kun is official yuru-kyara of Susaki, Chiitan was created to be the official yuru-kyara of a real-life live otter also named Chiitan, who was the honorary tourism ambassador for Susaki city. However, Chiitan went "rogue" posting violent and threatening videos and tweets online which culminated in Chiitan having a public argument with comedian John Oliver and then Twitter closed Chiitan's accounts in several countries and Susaki city officials publicly denounced Chiitan's unsanctioned activities and even filed a court case against Chiitan which resulted in official separation of Chiitan from Susaki city.
Here are some sources I have used for my research.

@@lennyg47 What I'm talking about is just the name: I don't know what the general name of a mascot is in Japanese, but as I understand it: yuru-kyara is a type of mascot, the: unofficial mascot.
And thank you for all the fun facts ! :-)
For example didn't know Chiitan had been naughty.

    • @lennyg47
      @lennyg47 5 лет назад +1

@@autohmae Well, I admit my Japanese is crap. I've been mostly relying on what I hope are credible online translations. Most sources appear to consistently translate yurui (緩い) as "loose" or "laid-back" contextually referring to behavior. And kyara (chara) as short for character.
My understanding is that some yuru-kyara are employed by and therefore are official representatives of a municipality or a corporation. While some yuru-kyara are independent operators (self-employed) and as such if they claim to represent their hometown or prefecture, they do so in unofficial capacity, as citizens.
These second type of yuru-kyara are free from the restraints of the official yuru-kyara rules of conduct, and their behavior is often not "laid-back" but varies based on the personality of each character. Such as Funassyi is generally "excited" while Chiitan has been "deceptively and overtly menacing".
Recently Kikuchi-kun (unofficial mascot of Kikuchi city) - (apparently no relation to Moa Kikuchi) - has caught my attention. I wish I could understand what he was saying to Funassyi at an event they appeared together. The audience was laughing quite heartily at his jokes.
