  • Larger, wider wheel thrown pottery can be harder to wire off the bat, so I decided to try out this technique using roofing felt!

I’m a potter and just learned about using tar paper as bats. I bought a huge roll because I can also use it for templates for handbuilding projects. The huge roll was $40 but I made dozens of bats and it was way cheaper than buying that many bats. I’m happy to share with other potters as well and I’m sure when I start using them at my studio others will want to make some too 🙂

I throw plates, and undercut with a bent needle tool something taught to me by Otto Heino.. When dry enough I turn them upside down( this also helps that the rim does not lift up while drying. Just leave the plates upside down until leather hard then place on wheel and use a long flat knife to cut them off holding the knife down on bat with some slip and water on the knife underneath and use the force of the wheel spinning to cut it off. That way you get a really smooth bottom. I do this method with everything I throw.

One note I would like to add on using this technique, and that is there is a sweet spot on how much slip (splashpan drippings) to use. Too much and the tar paper will slip and throw off your center, especially with the large items and not enough and it won't grab the paper. What I do is smooth out the paper on the bat with a wet sponge; and then I let it sit for about 10 minutes or so. This has worked great for me. The other thing is that, when the rim is leather hard, flip the piece upside down on another bat, and then peel the paper away from the edge of the bat with you one hand, while pulling up the bat with the other had. I do this on a banding wheel, as it allows me to work my way around the piece till finally the bat just pops off, there is no need to wire it off.
And like you lauradavenport1645, I figured that the cost of a whole roll of tar felt was very cheap compared to to the price of bats, and with the uses that it offers. ;-)

I'm a once a week adult education Potter, I saw a video about this so i brought the smallest bit of Tyvek, a 1.4 x 1 metre piece from Amazon and then because I can't remember where I saw the original post, I just typed in what I wanted to see on you tube and your video was top of the list. So, here I am about to watch your video. Will finish my comments when you finish telling me how to use it. Thankyou. Great video, on class tomorrow so with my batt mate under the bat And this on top of the bat, throwing is going to be less messy not having to use clay to secure anything, so fingers crossed, what could go wrong ??lol thanks 😊

I started using the tar paper bats when I was just learning to throw, mostly because I wasn't able to lift the pieces off the wheel without distorting them. Now I only use them when I'm making thin bottomed pieces, some of my tar paper bats are 10 years old. Here's how I use them:
I soak the bats in my water bucket for 30 minutes to an hour, this makes them a little more pliable. I put a small amount of just slip on a wooden bat, maybe 2 tablespoons or so and just wipe it all over with my fingers. Then take the wet tar paper and center on the wood bat, and rub it in two opposite directions, 90 degrees from each other, then turn on the wheel and using a wooden rib I start at the center and push all the slip that's underneath to the outside. Throw the piece and slide a large putty knife under the bat and turn the wheel slowly until it comes loose, pick up tar paper and all with the big putty knife and set on the table to dry. When leather hard just peel off the paper. On bigger pieces you need to let it stay on the wooden bat till it firms up, don't wait too long to peel off the tar paper or it will start to curl and distort your pot.

try using a rolling pin or piece of large dowling. Run the wheel and press down on the roller to compress the clay until it is the thickness you want.
