Decades ago I saw a snippet of a video on PBS explaining washes. In search of that snippet I’ve taken many classes and never found a teacher that explained washes as clearly and completely as you do. (Not even close.) I’m so relieved to have stumbled on to your channel. I’m also psyched to have found a teacher who explains and demonstrates in real time. It takes a lot of time and effort to record, edit and post videos. Thank you so much!

I hope everyone watches until the very end. What Oliver shows and demonstrates are very important, but what he says at the end is also very very valuable to be reminded of, as we can get carried away in attempting to control the wash. Watercolour is such an amazing medium and Oliver is a great teacher to show us how to understand it better. Thanks so much for your work into your videos!

Thanks Jillian. Watercolour tutorials and courses can indeed be rather expensive and many are unable to afford them. Also, unfortunately, I receive many emails from those that have paid for them and found that they have not been worth the expense (of course, that's not always the case as there are many excellent tutors out there.) My father was a maths teacher and always gave his knowledge and time freely - he was kind and generous and I feel that perhaps the best way of honouring his example and memory is to try to do the same. I think that at some stage I will introduce some paid content, but it won't be to replace the content and programs that I am going to be building up on the channel in this or coming years.

I’m a fairly new subscriber and I wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your tutorials. I sometimes get frustrated watching tutorials because the artists tend to talk more than they show. And while I understand that there has to be a balance of verbal instruction with physical example, you seem to have struck the perfect “sweet spot” with articulation and demonstration of the “how to”. Thank you for your generosity and pleasant delivery. I love our little online visits.

Oh Oliver, that is the best video on washes ever. For a professional watercolourist, you have a great talent to teach watercolour as well. Most professionals can go only so far but you are able to break it down into sections that are discrete and digestible. I am struggling with washes now and trying to glean anything from various videos. You have tackled it straight on and probably prevented a number of people from giving up or becoming very frustrated. Thank you. I look forward to going through all your videos. 🇨🇦

Thank you Olly for such an enlightening tutorial. It really is the first time I've come across someone who explains "why" rather than just "how". Once you understand why, you can replicate it for yourself. Simply following along with a tutorial which demonstrates just the "how", you'll never get success with your own work. That is why is I have always struggled to end up with a composition of my own which I am satisfied with. Until now! So thank you very much! If you ever consider holding a work shop (whenever that may be possible), please count me in!

"Hope that was not too dry and technical"... WOW !! LOL, I only wish that the many WC tutorials that I have watched over the last three years were even just 10% 'dry and technical' as yours are. As others have mentioned here and as an ex Teacher (from industry) and even a Teacher Trainer - I just can't fault this tutorial from your inset (ie intro), teaching points clearly explained with detailed examples (nothing, speeded up, no waffle and no annoying background music) to your summary. Have just done these four examples and then laid a wash and did two washes which at 1min and 15 second intervals brushed in some more paint and observed the spreads and cauliflowers. Your example of the blue and pink washes and the effect of having a much stronger concentrated mix was (which I should have known, having taught Science) causing it to spread into the less concentrated one, was one of those "Arrrrrrr, Oh I see now" which all good teachers aim for with students and with your tutorials you have loads of.

My mind is blown from this video - not as much from the teaching - but because I think I finally understand British humor. This is it, right? The dry, sardonic delivery, the inability to tell if it’s a joke right away leaving you to wonder if the person is a boring or a comedic genius, the unassuming wit. The effects you showed us with the "cottages" exercise can be discovered on our own through experimentation, but it can take forever to figure out WHY those effects occurred, especially when more than one factor is involved (ie. wetness of paper & concentration of pigment). I need to understand WHY I do something, and WHY something happens, in order to learn. I feel I've just watched a masterclass on controlling washes. Wonderful tutorial. It will help me remember that I have to be patient - I have tendency to rush right in before my water /paper/ paint is ready. Thank you. 💁🏻‍♀️

When I got seriously into watercolour about 5 years ago I read a book by Stephen Coates called the Watercolour Enigma - I’m so glad I did as he explained with diagrams how the watercolour and paint particles/molecules work and it made a huge difference to my understanding. I didn’t rate his painting style highly but his explanation and knowledge of how paint and water work was brilliant. Your video is also really helpful and well explained and I wish it had been around back then. Saying that even though I understood how it worked it took about 3 years before I found myself using paint differently and more intuitively and was surprised by how I’d learned its tricks

It's a good point - many believe that the learning and knowledge is the point of arrival, when in fact it's just the start. Experimenting and putting that knowledge into practice is what delivers results. Well done for having the patience that watercolour needs!

12:00. 👏👏👏 Ok the penny dropped. The paper doesn’t care if Im using blue or pink. The color difference only matter to us. The paper only considers the consistency of the paint. Whether its one color or another is irrelevant! Olly you’re a genius.

Your videos are a breath of fresh air, so many times I want to paint freely, which is fun but with disappointment in the end, I’ve been trying to find achievable end results after back surgery with a lap table, thank you, I enjoy your videos

This is an exceptional lesson in the basic fundamentals that are so critical to watercolor success, that no one else seems to be able to articulate in such an interesting and informative format as you do. Thank you for all of your dedication to the education of others! I’ve learned so much from every video!
