Painting With a Loose Technique

- 'Loosening Up' is a term we often hear in the world of watercolour and landscape painting. What exactly does it mean? How do we develop this technique? Is it really the case that it's the only 'proper' way to paint landscapes in watercolour? Follow me as I paint the same countryside scene loosely, and then in a more controlled way.

I am 79 years old. I used to enjoy drawing when I was young, and by my teens had become reasonably proficient, but I never really advanced into any other media. Then family and work commitments meant that I didn't have time for hobbies, and for 50 years I haven't drawn anything.
But now that I'm retired, and I have time, I have decided to see if I can pick up where I left off. So I bought a "watercolour starter set", and a book, and subscribed to your RUclips channel. The starter set is probably not great, but it has at least put a brush in my hands and some paint on paper for the first time.
Your videos are so informative and relaxed that I am learning faster than I thought possible at my age, although I have to confess that, when watching them, the first thing I look for is the cricket ball on your bookshelf.
Oliver, you are still the best instructor for those of us just starting out! You tackle all the most important questions and concepts related to watercolor like no other! I look forward to your next video!

You're right; making videos is very time consuming - especially videos of quality teaching which also requires a lot of planning - I am sure Oliver will be pleased to know that people are keen to see him do more. I fancied having a channel of my own, but having never had any formal art training, I don't think I am qualified to set up to teach. This is despite having painted; one way or another, since childhood, and seriously so since the 1960s. The part of Oliver's videos I enjoy is the quiet, informed way in which he goes about things. He also finally convinced me of the worth of a tonal/value study. I am doing more of those than actual paintings !!! I can wait Oliver, so just take your time. The quality is assured! Love your videos and your paintings. Every time you say one paints how they feel about the subject I always think you paint how you feel. Period. That is why some people always use muted colors and some people always use brilliant colors. They paint themselves and their likes and dislikes into the subject. They see the subject through the lens of who they are . . . their very being, their soul.

So much wonderful information..it made such a difference to see both styles at the same time...I had never seen that before...but when I first saw your paintings, it was love at first sight...the same peace that I feel in the country, at the ocean, and in the quaint towns was all in your work ! I’ve been hoping you would make another tutorial as I think you are an inspiration. As someone quite new to painting landscapes in watercolour I do feel more comfortable with a tighter style but after watching your very enjoyable and interesting video I’m going to ‘give it a go’. Thanks for busting those myths about loose technique, I was thinking some of those myself ;D I agree with the many comments appreciating the many tips shared and the individuality brought into the painting. I for one am awed by the way you apply colour here and there, saying this is a stone wall, these are shadows, these are clouds, and I'm thinking, huh? And then they are all gradually revealed to be exactly those things you said they were. It shows me how well you Know those techniques, those colours and shades - that if they are applied this way and this much, they create these and those effects and work to give an impression like so. I'm just starting out so I will probably take a long time, if I do, to get there, but the promise of it is delicious! :)
Thank you. It's all about familiarity with techniques, equipment and knowing what they can deliver. Always look ahead when painting watercolour and know where you want to go with the washes and shapes that you make.

I draw n paint with acrylics.some 35 yrs.now but not much with watercolors.. Your explanations, distinctions between loose and detailed are very good. Painting by numbers and illustrating are examples. Your two versions show that pretty well. I think it's a difficult distinction to demonstrate. Small brushes almost compel one to paint details. Larger brushes encourage looseness, as you point out. This is the first time I've seen you on RUclips. I'll look forward to watching more of your work and teaching.

Thanks so much for your tutorials. I have done watercolour paintings for many years. You explain what you are doing, and WHY. I have appreciated you slow’ish explanations, with no distracting background music (as with some other artists on RUclips) it’s a real pleasure to relax and take on board your techniques. I really enjoy your tutorials. I think somewhere between the two styles works best, or perhaps a combination. Parts of the loose one seem chaotic to me, in particular the distant field and trees. The tight one is very controlled and more like an illustration. All just my opinion of course. 😊

Much food for thought here Olly, and thank you for showing us both of these techniques. I can see how a more defined style may be necessary for the focal point, like the dry stone wall on your larger finished painting that you showed us looking towards Kimmeridge - that is a fabulous painting btw! And I can see how a looser approach is great for dealing with backgrounds and skies where they may not be the focal point. You just have to judge for yourself where each approach may, or may not, be appropriate for the different parts of your painting. All I know is that with your paintings, I feel as though I can breathe and look about as the Viewer. If I can achieve that peace and serenity in my own work, I'd be really happy! Without doubt the most comprehensive, detailed and best explained difference between a more illustration type WC as oppose a far looser style. Doing both at the same time, an excellent idea, is so obvious, but no one else has done it. You also don't do which really annoys me, when artists speed up the painting, talk rubbish for the sake of it, annoying music all the time, really well lit, in focus and we can see your mixing and brush technique at the same time. As an ex teacher (from industry) I really liked your summing up, where you went through all the thought processes going on in your head, and you are 'choosing' techniques learnt over many years to leading to students saying it looks so easy. I always start out being calm, have every thing at hand but when I finish my desk looks like a bomb has hit it. I am at a point trying to decide my own personal style and this has really helped me in making my mind up of using quite good line, ink and wash skills due to being a draughtsman when a young man as oppose the looser style. Recently have been able to create skies, shadows for trees, foliage and walls by suggestion as oppose doing as you so rightly say 'painting with numbers. Will certainly watch this one again, there is so much you show us.
Thank you so much for your tutelage, Olly. Even though you often teach to beginners, the style is elevated ... more subtlety and sophistication than most other YT instructors. I'm gravitating toward a gentler color palette rather than the "vibrant" colors so highly touted by others. Your methods and color choices are helping me move closer to the style I want to paint.
The uptight tree is quite beautiful!
To me, it looks original. Kinda like a gorgeously illustrated children’s book. I don’t see more detail in this tree then in the lose tree, I looked and went back a few times and still don’t see tightness.
But then again, I’m happy if my watercolor paintings are anywhere just above second grade public school art class, I don’t have the luxury to ask myself between learning and trying to not disappoint myself if I’m painting lose or uptight.
If I would, what should I do with whatever answer my mind comes up with?
Everything this guy paints is just beyond beautiful and I am aware every minute how lucky I am that this is available to me.

Just paint - don't think too much about the style that you're painting in. The tight/loose debate is really about how to treat and simplify detail.

Thank you. Lots of food for thought here. I actually like both the paintings and am not bothered by regular fence posts. The foreground whispy grasses could be taken away and both the paintings be stronger for that. Really love the distant ghostly trees in the loose style. I am going to try this, it achieves distance very well. Love your channel. Thank you.

I totally agree that your loose painting is much better than the one that is more defined. It just feels so relaxing. I so appreciate seeing both of these methods and gives me so much more freedom and spontenaity. I know that it will take a lot of work to get to that level of freedom with lots of creating to get to there. I can totally relate to the learning from so many different tutors and styles and I find myself doing just as you mentioned. Thinking oh, I want to try that. When I do sometimes its good because I find out that I dont like it at all. I check that off and say to myself, it wasnt a waste of time necessarily because I dont know what I dont know and I dont experience things without trying them. I always learn something that I can use. I do feel as though you can try too much and never settle on what really makes you happy to paint. Right now watching you I am drawn to this, so I want to explore it and see where I go with it.

Great video Oliver! It really showcases the advantages and disadvantages of both techniques of painting. Personally I implement both in my process, I typically start loose then I tighten & refine in progressive layers.

When I was taught how to stretch paper years ago I used packaging tape also. It really does make an almost "drum tight" surface on which to work. I enjoyed your demo. Subbed.
