This song came out more than 35 years ago, and I remember having to explain the meaning back then when I was in high school (thank you Irish Catholic upbringing!)

From the Greek "Kyrie eleison" - pronounced "KEER-ee-ay il-AY-iss-on", meaning "Lord, have mercy"
The lyrics are a prayer.
They're literally saying:
"Lord have mercy down the road that I must travel.
Lord have mercy through the darkness of the night.
Lord have mercy where I'm going will you follow?
Lord have mercy on a highway in the Light!"

TJ - I share your enthusiasm! I came of age in the 80s too and am a huge fan of this song. I saw Mr. Mister open up for Heart when this song was just released and it was magical as you would expect. I’m a past guitar player and followed Steve Farris from the band very closely. They’re all excellent musicians.
This song still speaks to me. I assume most people don’t know the true meaning of it but I still play it when I need inspiration. What a reassuring message it holds. You made my day ( which pretty much means you made my year so far LOL.

The 80s produced the best music ever!
I grew up in the Catholic Church when the mass was still said in Latin. This was and still is a part of the Catholic and Episcopal services. I drive for a living and this has been my theme song for a very long time.

Enjoyed your take on the track, a remarkable piece of art. Still sends me reeling 35+ years later. I'd be dancing right along with you. Lead singer Richard Page writing most of the music, John Lang wrote the lyrics. But careful, the band was not Christian. Lang relied upon his youth for inspiration, remembering his church-going days.
