- Benjamin discusses the Heartbeat City tour and his upcoming solo album in this MTV interview at Private Eyes nightclub in New Jersey, July 23, 1984. A huge thank you to Kimberly D. for finding and sharing this beautiful footage.

He looked so annoyed at the beginning of the interview...then as a consummate professional he got into character, gave the reporter that Million Dollar Smile & muscled through all of the stupid questions... but always kept his cool. He was so dam good looking, charming & talented... most people don't realize he sang most of the greatest hits from The Cars... He was gone way too soon. You just can't say enough good things about this guy... he's just too freaking cool & humble.

Frank Zappa put it best. He said being interviewed is one step removed from the inquisition and called it a very unnatural process, which it is. I would imagine that being asked the same questions again, and again, and again becomes very stultifying and predictable. I’m sure to celebrities, it becomes the embodiment of mediocrity.
His voice needed to be heard more. Never go full Ocasek.

What a beautiful man. He just finished playing to 20k people and was still ok with doing some interview he didn't want to do. From what I know, he was a really great guy, besides the fact that he was a stellar musician. RIP beautiful Benjamin. You're not missing much, but you are really missed...

That's not true about Ric. Ric wrote the song, 'Drive', and Ric had the foresight to know that Benjamin should sing it. It was their highest ranked song on Billboard charts.
@@OttoByOgraffeyexactly, these Ben Orr sycophants want to put the blame on Ric when Ben had his own issues to deal with.
Just because he was good looking that doesn’t negate some of his own faults that contributes to what happened to the band.
I won’t sit and defend Ric’s behavior either as we all know how aloof and controlling he could be, but to say that it was all Ric’s fault is ludicrous and preposterous.
I knew Ben personally and he could be moody and did have some bad habits that contributed to his downfall. Let’s leave it at that.
I’m thankful for the catalog of awesome music The Cars left us and the boys definitely were part of the soundtrack to my life!!

The whole band were underrated and underappreciated, especially in the UK and Europe. I just watched a 2000 interview where they talked about how the Brits seemed to hate them early on when they first broke out and went to England to do some very minor touring there and Europe. They said the crowd were insulting and throwing things at them.

There's alot of good people that still want to help you like me and I don't know you personally but I know all life is a precious gift from God and Sacred...the only one who wants you to give up on life is Satan..yes there is a Devil out there and he exsists but I think that alot of people just forget about him..but that's what he wants you to do forget about him...and think that this thought of suicide is not from him, but of course it is...
Look mankind was God's greatest creation..and Satan can't stand that because he blew it with God...
So ever since THEN, since he can't destroy God,he instead goes after us...

you could tell at the beginning Ben wanted no part of this interview and maybe wasn't feeling well because of the flu he said he was getting over.
.. but to his credit he was gracious and kind..we can take his example with us ..can we not?-a nice man
As gorgeous as his eyes were, there is a darkness behind them it seems. I just could not stop just looking at him and listening to him. His voice, his eyes, his kindness, his charm. He was just so special. I hope he knows he was not forgotten. Never.
He was kind, so I think people took advantage and hurt him...just a hunch. Not saying it's truth or anything,..before anyone gets their knickers in a twist..lol..
I think that's why "Drive" has such a hauntingly deep sound. Rick put the pen to paper and Ben projected the feelings.
@@desertrose1226 It's true. Ric took advantage of him and rode on his back to stardom when Benjamin was the only reason they even made it in the beginning. My opinion. The songs that made them famous were ones that Benjamin sang. Ric couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. Beautiful Benjamin...we miss you.

How stunningly gorgeous was Benjamin Orr? That man was sexy as hell, and such a phenomenal talent - a golden voice, he could play so many different instruments, and a great songwriter on top of it (if you haven't heard the Lace album, you're depriving yourself) Rest in peace, Ben, and thank you. ❤

Yes I've seen other men and women who meet this category..you just see them and you have to catch your breath, and say WOW that person is gorgeous!
But sometimes though I've met people who are stunningly gorgeous..but because they know they are gorgeous people their personalities stink..they are just gorgeous on the outside but ugly on the inside..
Ben was different though he was a beadutiful person inside and out..and he seemed a very modest and nice person which is a rare quality in people indeed nowadays!
I been listening to the Benjamins album and I just gotta say that it's a great album. Every song on it is wonderful. My favorites are In Circles , To Hot to Stop, Hold On, Skyline, Spinning, The Lace. Geez almost the whole album. He is so loved

And unfortunately she is no longer here either!
But passed away in 2017.
@@chancycat9822 Sad to hear. The survival rate is very low indeed for this kind of cancer and so difficult to detect in the early stages.
@@daviddd99Thankyou but she didn't have Pancreatic Cancer..just Pancreatitis (so there's a difference there ...either way though it's very painful)..I could see my sister wincing in pain alot unfortunately her alcoholism didn't help either..
But she had a problem a big problem you know what I mean?
If she didn't have a problem with drinking..she maybe alive today..
But people who are addicts..drugs,or alcohol addiction..an addiction in the family not only causes problem for the addict but the addicts family
So I say it was a combination of both diseases that did her in
But my sister like Ben will be very much missed..he seemed to be a very sweet guy!
Why does it seem that in life we always lose the good one's to young?..My sister was only 57 yrs old, only 4 years older then Ben...either way to young to die!
Someone in their 50's is not old by any means!..you're older..but you still have alot of living to do like 30 to 40 more year's if you're fortunate...

It’s how people were then… today people are coddled and have their hands held. Good in some ways but people now are far less strong and stoic.

Did he know that 2 years later he made one of tremendous albums ever made in the 80s for.a solo artist ? I even love him more than ever. Such an humble and sweet guy... Truly a legend !!!
Those of us who grew up when this guy was in the world putting out music, and we got to hear it for the first time - man, were we fortunate. I remember hearing Drive in my walkman for the first time, the 45 of Shake It Up on my modest little record player at home, and repeating All I Can Do for weeks after it got under my skin. What a great thing to grow up to. This band, in some ways, rescued us from the unhealthy preoccupations we see people mired in now - and they made it seem so effortless. They did a phenomenally good job.

Ben got famous relatively late -- he was 30 when the Cars' first album came out-- and I believe that kept him somewhat grounded.
Ric was 34! That was ancient back then.
Indeed. The cars were kinda like Mick Mars from Motley Crew. 10 years older than most 80s rock stars.
Richard Albert Henderson it still is now.. in fact today ppl are more hung up about age than they were then. I think 34 is young. 44 isn’t even old to me.
Radiounderground Elliot and Greg were much younger than the rest of the group though. Heck, Ric was almost 10 years older than Elliot! But that’s part of what made them so unique, all different ages and from different parts of the country.
Um Ben was kinda famous around the age of 16 ,grounded or experienced? Hmm

No, actually, it's even better, he was talking about the fans having a good time, not them as a band. He always sang his heart out and had zero arrogance about him. He was so interactive with the other musicians on stage and folks in the audience. He just truly loved what he was doing and was very gifted at it and we are so sad that he is gone. A heart of pure gold!!!
I think Benjamin knew he was hot and talented but had a quiet confidence and didn't show off. I hate show offs who act like they're better than anyone. Benjamin was better than most singers but didn't play on it. He was real sweet.

The interviewer was an idiot but just getting to watch Benjamin pull out the charm makes the interviewer very insignificant. I've read where he really wasn't comfortable doing interviews but you'd never know it to watch this. 19 years now and I still miss you so much beautiful soul.

Absolutely beautiful, sweet soul inside and out❤️. I had the good fortune & privilege of meeting Ben Orr after a Cars concert in Columbia , Maryland at Merriwether Post Pavilion, an outdoor concert venue. He & Ric Ocasek and the rest of the band hung out backstage and met several concertgoers who were lucky enough to get backstage passes. I had my picture taken with Ben & got his autograph. I adored him then & always will. Sure wish he was still here. Gone way too soon. He was a super talented singer/musician/writer and loved by so many but underrated. Rest in peace, Benjamin. 🙏🏻💙

I got totally swept up in their first album back in the day, my older sister brought a lot of cool music into the house and my mom listened to a lot of great stuff too, I was very lucky that way.

Wow! He was so gorgeous lol... was only about 13 or 14 back then, and really didn't appreciate his talent or astounding good looks. Stay the night has always been my favorite song by him though. Sad he passed so young. It's weird being around the same age now as when he died. Such a humble, talented, beautiful person. Love you Ben! Hope you're rocking in heaven! ❤
