Only a songwriter like Richard Page could turn a religious exhultation into a monstrous pop hook.
Mr. Mister is the name of the band. The lead's (Richard Page) voice is so powerful that it's easy to think he IS Mr. Mister). Both 'Broken Wings' and 'Kyrie' were #1 in the charts in '88 and Mr. Mister had a Grammy nomination for their lyrics to a gospel song 'Healing Waters'. Also, in '88.
And their song "Is This Love" reached #8 on the charts. Not a bad run at all, but it's too bad that they could not maintain their success on the follow-up album.
In the Tridentine Mass, the Kyrie is the first sung prayer of the Mass ordinary. The repeated phrase is “Kyrie, eleison” (or “Lord, have mercy”). It is usually (but not always) part of any musical setting of the Mass.

Richard Page (vocals, bass), Steve George (keyboards, saxophone, vocals), Pat Mastelotto (drums), Steve Farris (guitar, 1983-87), Howard 'Buzz' Feiten (guitar, 1988-89).
This record is a pop rock masterpiece. The non-radio songs are even better than the radio hits. Songs like Black/White, Don't Slow Down, Uniform Of Youth, and Tangent Tears. Ear candy! Great musicianship too.

The band's name is Mr. Mister, the singer is Richard Page. The producers of the official video handed out minicams to the band members to do candid shots on tour and the resulting footage is most of what was used to splice it together. You might want to check it out! The song spent two weeks at the top of the chart and the video received very heavy rotation on MTV.
From the Greek "Kyrie eleison" - pronounced "KEER-ee-ay il-AY-iss-on", meaning "Lord, have mercy"
The lyrics are a prayer. They're literally saying "Lord have mercy down the road that I must travel. Lord have mercy through the darkness of the night. Lord have mercy where I'm going will you follow. Lord have mercy on a highway in the Light!"
I remember my big brother bought this single and played it all the time. We had no clue it had some sort of religious significance, and we wouldn’t have cared if we knew - it’s just a great pop song.
In high school I thought it was “Kyrie lays along the road that I must travel.” No clue! Such an excellent band with excellent songs.We seriously had it made, musically, in the 80s. 😎

"Kyrie" is pronounced keer-ee-ay. "Kyrie eleison" is a Greek phrase used in the Roman Rite Catholic Mass.
This song and video were played a lot in the 80's and have prayed the Kyrie Eleison at Sunday Mass. This is the first time it clicked in my mind. I guess I wasn't paying attention to this song. Thanks for the reaction it helps me appreciate this song and others more. I just hope this Sunday when we are praying Kyrie eléison, Christe eléison, Kyrie eléison that I don't think of this song.
Years and years ago, I sang in a high school chorale. This is at least loosely translated as "Lord have mercy". You got it right. Thumb is up.

And now 36 years later, we all still listen to that song and we sang along and that is one of the best songs of the mid-80's

The drummer for this band is Pat Mastelotto who went on to drum for King Crimson and Stick Men. He plays a mean DW set! Check out Breathless by Stick Men. There's a great live version out there.
Mister Mister was the group's name, as in "Hey soul sister that's Mister Mister on the stereo, radio"

Per wiki - The song's hissing intro was an effect created by the sound of a crash cymbal played in reverse.
There's a live version from a couple of years ago that he did with Ringo Starr And His All Star Band. He's in his 60's and voice sounds just as amazing!

This was so perfect, this studio version. I would’ve given anything to have heard and seen this recorded in the studio. Like how many takes did they do for the final record. I don’t know anything about recording, but did they do the music first? There was just precision in those harmonies. Thanx for bringing it back. Good reaction.

Mr. Mister had two huge hits and then we didn't hear from them again. Why, why, why? Because they were masterful musicians.
Kyrie Eleison, translated, means "Lord have mercy." I never dreamed that I song I sang as part of the Catholic mass when I was a child (when the Mass was still in Latin) would become a pop song!

All us Catholic/Orthodox/et.al. raised kids who grew up reciting "Kyrie Elesion... Kyrie Eleison... Christi Eleison" informing our Protestant/et.al. friends back in the 80's of the meaning of this song. 😅❤

Ah No....Mr. Mister is not a solo artist but a Rock Group. Mr. Mister was an American rock band from Phoenix, Arizona, active from 1982 until 1990. The band consisted of Richard Page on lead vocals and bass guitar, Steve George on keyboards/backing vocals, Pat Mastelotto on acoustic and electronic drums/percussion and Steve Farris on guitars/backing vocals.

I love this song. Could always keep it on repeat. Don't feel bad I also didn't hear or don't remember this phrase in church either. I like many other people that didn't recognize the phrase thought they were saying something else.

As a young Christian in the 80’s this song meant a lot to me. To hear God acknowledged on secular radio was really cool. Great song beyond the message, but the message was great too.

According to Richard Page, the song is essentially a prayer (the chorus part 'kyrie eleison' is in Greek). It hit #1 and stayed there for 2 weeks in '86. It was quickly picked up and covered by contemporary Christian artists. I think you already sampled Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit In The Sky" - a Rock Christian song written and performed by a nice Jewish boy that even atheists like to sing.

You should check out Journey’s instrumental Venus from their Eclipse album. It’s a guitar and drum extravaganza and arguably the heaviest thing they’ve ever done.

I’m an atheist - yet I do believe that Jesus Christ did exist, as a man. I do believe that Jesus was a preacher, and he did preach the philosophies he is known for. Was he the son of God? Not in my opinion. But it’s all about interpretation. I’ve read JC’s words, and admire them.
