Building My Garden Office: Part 9 - Electrics, Networking, Insulation

- This is part nine of my year-long series where I go through how I design and build my own garden office for the purposes of operating and running my home-based web design and web development business (Made with Fuel).
In this video, I add the electrics and networking cables, finished fitting the insulation, and put up the vapour barrier on my walls.

Hi Jack! Congrats, nice build. I'm starting mine in a month or so, so heavy research at the moment. Do you have the details of the consumer unit you used in the office? Also, did you install an isolator switch at the house? If so maybe those details would be helpful! Well done!
Liev Garcia Hello! Yes I did. I don’t know what the exact model of the consumer unit is in the office but it’s sufficient to handle any future upgrades.
Hi there, just about to start our garden office. Did you run your network cables in the underground duct with your SWA cable? Will that not make the network cable prone to interference, or does the SWA act as a shield? I was planning to run the network cable in the duct and the SWA just buried in the ground with minimum 100mm separation from the network duct. Cheers
Ian Coxsey Yes, I did both in the duct. I made sure it was wide enough for both (100mm) and both the CAT6 and the SWA cable arrived insulated. Speed test show correct gigabit speeds. Good luck with your build!
Did you need to protect the wires from the insolation in anyway? If the wires get hot inside insolation, could that cause problems?

No protection on the cables, no. It’s similar construction as a house so not worried.
Great video, I'm currently working on something similar for a friend. I noticed there isn't a link to the ducting / conduit you used to run the cabling down to the garden office. Do you have any links or recommendations on that?
I think I just bought something in a sale. It was 100mm wide conduit if I remember correctly.
Good work. Does the garden office connect to its own circuit on the main house consumer unit or does the SWA cable just connect to an existing ring main or radial circuit?
The garden office connects from its small consumer unit to an individual breaker in the main house consumer unit, so you can isolate the cable at both ends.
Haha, trying not to be critical, but, don't use a flat bit for plastic! Use a hole saw, a lot easier.

How can you install the network sockets in series after eachother on same cable??
I didn’t. The cable that runs from the house runs into a wall panel in the office. This then goes into a switch where all the other cables within the office run into.
I'm curious, how much did it all cost from start to finish?

Hi have you do a cold roof with ventilation or a warm roof?
A cold roof with ventilation. A warm roof would have given too little head room or would have required planning permission for a taller build.
Do you have any plans or timber material sizes you used l?
Nick Wilkinson no plans as such. I finished it mostly but after the bare structure, I more or less worked it out on the fly. Most of the floor and walls were 2x4. The roof was more, based on span tables.

Out of curiosity, how much did you pay for the electrician? I have a similar project at the moment and need a spark to do tge electrics.
Think it was £680 all in. That was for the small consumer unit, connecting the armoured cable to the house, etc.
@@jackrmcconnell Thanks Jack. That's pretty spot on my budget. I only need a couple of socket points in a log cabin and hopefully don't need a consumer unit but, also need power to a fish pond and where a hot tub is going to go. Want it all on the same ring so as not to over complicate it. I will see what a quote brings!
Excellent vid but I would have had insulation on first 50mm, then electrics after the insulation.
Yes, if I were doing that again, I probs would have done that.
Hi Jack, how come just the aluminium foil tape on the 2 walls please?
I just wanted the largest thermal barrier on the two walls that had the sun on them the most. Also, the insulation was at stud level and the rest weren’t so it would have been difficult to tape those.
@@jackrmcconnell Ah I see, fair enough. I'm in a similar position where the insulation is sunk back so not sure how to tape these. I did think 4" tape to sit on the wood, round the edge and overlap onto the PIR but what do you think please?
@@Twigster1 that’s why I used a vapour barrier - the green polythene sheet, taped up everywhere. It solved the problem and was inexpensive.

Joe Taylor cold roof. Didn’t have the space for a warm one.
Jack McConnell Thanks Jack, I’m the same. What did you do for the roof then, did you leave an air gap or just pushed insulation to the top and left it? I’m at that point and not sure what to do. Apparently you need an air gap and then vents in the soffits for the airflow 🤷♂️
Joe Taylor Yes I did and yes, having the air gap is very important. I periodically check mine and it’s remained dry in the gap which is good.
Jack McConnell Awesome, how are you able to check it? By looking through the soffits?
Joe Taylor I haven’t actually got my soffits in yet so can just look or feel above the insulation to see what it’s like. Haven’t gotten around to ordering soffits yet but plan to add them this year.
I know I am really late to the game, but do you remember how much it cost to have the electrician come out to do the wiring? (great series by the way :)
I honestly don’t remember. It was done in two parts - first to put in the armoured cable and the second to wire up everything inside the room.
Did you run your Ethernet cable with your power supply (down the same conduit) from the house to the cabin?
I did. It was attached to one side and the power to the other. In hindsight I should have used fibre but I ran a bunch of continuity and speed tests and it all checked out with no interference. Think I was lucky with it though.
@@jackrmcconnell that’s good to know, I’ve just read that you’re not meant to do it, as it can cause issues with interference and high voltage jumping to the low voltage. We’re putting an outside office in and I was going to lay the cables together.
@@lmtreeservices I can’t say I’ve seen actual issues with doing it in the wild and it’s certainly not been my experience but I imagine it must happen. I’d go with fibre just to be on the safe side though.
@@jackrmcconnell getting a little confused with all the options tbh. I was going to use a cat6 or 6a swa type, not sure which fibre cable/ spec’ I’d need.

Yes. Someone else commented on that. Both are attached to opposite walls giving 100mm separation and packet testing shows no issues. Think I might have been lucky but not something I’d do again if given the chance.
Hi, how much did the electrician cost in total? and did you have to buy the consumer unit and other items or did the electrician have all the items on hand?
Peter Jones The electrician supplied everything. The electrics were done in several bits so difficult to give an exact price.

David Pařík it’s coming. Still have a few more videos to make. It takes a long time.
Network cable separation gone out the window when it was dragged through the Duct with the SWA cable. The SWA cable is NOT shielded to protect EMI to other cables. It’s for mechanical protection and safety. The current Wiring Regs state MINIMUM 100mm separation between SELV and LV circuits for this exact reason. From experience you are going to have high Induced voltage in those LAN cables. This WILL have a huge negative effect on data transfer speeds. Your “Electrician” would know this. 👍🇬🇧
Steven G I agree however, the cables are taped to the outer edges of the duct as best as possible to give some distance. The CAT6 is shielded and having run some tests, there isn’t any packet loss or speed decrease to indicate a drop in quality from interference from the SWA. Maybe i’m lucky but all seems to be well. I choose this route as I didn’t want to direct bury my Ethernet cables for fear of chopping through when when gardening.
Jack McConnell When system is energised, check for AC voltage between Ethernet cables and earth. Obviously the network cables need isolating first. Two separate ducts should’ve been in ground when opened up. At the end of the day, you must be happy with your efforts and if it all works and your spark is signing it off then well done. One other observation, under the vapour barrier should be zero clearance clearance between the installation board. Moisture WILL become present where air gaps exist. The fixed cables should have mechanical-protection. I’m a great fan of dado trunking around walls in such garden buildings. Gives great flexibility should you change layout of office, separates cables correctly and allows for wall cavities to be filled flush to surface as no cables in walls. Anyways my friend, well done! It will for sure last a number of years. Oh, and get those ducts off the ground and sealed. 👍🏻 from me! 🇬🇧
@@jackrmcconnell hi Jack. Shielding only works when the actual shield is earthed continuously throughout the run. If the shielding isn't attatched to a seperate earth from the house then its doing nothing different a cat 5 does. Really you should use a switch in a cab which is earthed via a rod and the cat 6 should then be connected to metal rj45s or into a metal data point with a metal rj45 plugged into the data point and then the computer. If the earth is broken at any point in that sequence it isn't shielded! Great videos though
Terrance Hazell Interesting! I do realise this is an area where I didn’t do a brilliant job. Fortunately, I have done some speed tests and i’m getting really decent speeds so have been fairly happy with everything. Maybe i’ve just been lucky. I’m about to do some more ducting on my property with power and data cables but this time they’re going in separately.
I bet it works fine. There must be millions of miles of cat 5 / 5e / 6 run in dado trunking alongside socket wiring across the country.

@@jackrmcconnell 10:37 get rid of as much of the black outer sheath as possible, makes getting the faceplate on a lot easier
Curtis J That’s true but the more sheathing is removed the more chance of interference on the cable, especially at the connectors.

Curtis J I used to install networks and seen the effects through an analyser. You’ll be surprised! Never mind all done now, and working well 😊
