2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Replaced all rocker arms and hydraulic valve lash on the right side of engine immediately after hearing ticking noise @119,328 on 8/26/21. One rocker arm was bad and 3 had some play. Job needed a valve cover gasket set, upper intake gaskets and Throttle Body gasket (not replaced). Replaced torque crews on PCV valve (old gasket used) with 5mm bolts for easy access. Remove the throttle body to access the 2 throttle body support bolts. Two bolts removed to relocate transmission fill tube. Special tools needed to secure the cam shaft. Lifter: 12x: MELLING JB7525 Rocher Arm: 12x: MELLING MR1332
Do you think Melling is good or better than oem,I have a 2013 with 130,000 on it and was thinking about changing roller rockers,lifters,and timing chain kit ,I have no tick yet ,probably just jynked myself lol
don't need take any brackets off to take upper intake off. Just remove bolts from back and in front use 4mm socket and take stem and bolt with it off. Then pull up and slide forward.
Why didn't they do it like a old 22re Toyota engine, no lifters or rollers involved, the only reason I can think of is less noise,I'll take dependability over less noise any day lol

I've been to two different Dealerships and both said it's normal of course. It's depressing hearing your Engine sound like shit and getting worse while your paying on it. Plus I bought it with intentions of keeping it for 10-15 years and no way in hell that's happening unless something changes.
Dam man I’m sorry to hear that..yea dealerships don’t really care since that’s money for their service department…U could help it by running either Mobil 1 or royal purple oil or adding some oil treatments to slow the wear down.. the only way to get rid of the tick is to replace the valves..

Good. I have a problem with a 2011 dodge charger 3.6 with 190 thousand miles that I bought. I changed the expired oil, changed the spark plugs, cleaning the injectors, cleaning important sensors, acceleration body. Once it has been tuned, it will be given a 5w / 30 oil to clean the inside of the engine. I changed the synthetic caite x 10w / 30 again. THE DETAIL THAT I STARTED TO RING IN THE COLD THAT IS 1 OR 2 SECONDS AND NOW. I turn on the check ingine and the result is the camshafts and I have changed them, The 3 chain tensioners are changed and everything is fine. And the rattle came back. What will be the problem? They do not know what it can be. Can you help me?
Where is the rattle coming from? Top, front, or bottom of engine? If the rattle is coming from the top then u might have to look into the lifters and rockers… if it’s coming from the front, check the length of the chain it could have stretched causing it to rattle… if it coming from the bottom then check the rod bearings. Hope this helps!

I've heard a few people that completely stopped their Engine Tick by switching to amsoil Signature and Redline when the vehicle had high milage like yours. I have a Tick going on that's getting worse with on 4,000 miles so I'm about to try one of them as well.
It’s 1 per valve so I believe it’s 24 of them.. yes replacing all its a good idea but that means removing the timing chain to remove the ones near the timing sprockets so might as well replace timing guides.
If it ain't broke don't fix it. The more you mess around inside the valve cover the more likely you're gonna throw the engine out of time and if you have to ask this question you're not gonna have a good time timing one of these.
Quick question, since you didn’t loosen all the caps what order did you tighten the caps down in? I’m in the middle of doing this and don’t want to screw things up when I torque the bolts back down
Sorry for the late reply but I torqued them down the same way as if u had loosen all of them.... I went over the ones I didn’t loosen up just for good measures.
This has been a problem for quite a few years now and and dodge always says there's nothing wrong. I got this ticking especialy on idle and slow acceleration on my Chalenger and it only had 57000 miles on it. Never drove it hard and changed oil every 3000 miles. Even the Mechanics praised me on how good I kept the car up. Just a horrible engine.

@@jeremyh683 its basically luck of the draw. I have the 3.6l and many go over 200k miles with no issues. I have the 3.6l in a jeep tho, seemingly less people talk about the issue in jeeps. The rocker arms and oil filter housing is what you have to look at mainly. Otherwise the engine is pretty solid. It almost seems like either you have this issue or you never will. Probably manufacturing or assembly not up to spec, ehh blame fiat. One went to 626k before it needed a rebuild! there is hope haha

It’s is a common issue..if u try getting the part from the dealer most of the time it will be on back order..it’s not a bad DIY job as long as u don’t let the timing move out of time.
I did replace the lifter but I didn’t show it..when I’m showing the rocker u can se the lifter is out but since the rocker was the one that was the one making the noise I forgot to show the lifter.. if the lifter that u are trying to remover is being pushed down just turn the engine by hand till u see that the lobe of the can has moved up and the valve is close that way u don’t have to lift the cam as much and u don’t run the risk of jumping time or anything like that.
If the can it’s not losses and rocker just fall off then yes the lifter is stuck.. also make sure if u going to put mew lifters in, to submerge the new lifters in new oil to charge them.. u can use a cup and just drop the lifters in there but make sure to pour enough oil to cover them completely and let them sit for about 15 min before dropping the new lifter in.

Really depends..usually the rocker is what goes bad and if u catch it on time u can save the camshaft and u would only need new lifter and rocker… if u have a little experience with cars it’s not too hard to do just don’t let it jump time while doing the job..but to me it be worth fishing if engine still fires up fine

Were you able to solve the problem? I have a bad lifter sound and p219a code. I replaced o2 sensors and map sensor. The code was there I replaced injectors and now p219a code is gone and I have p219b code. Does bad rocker arms lead to these codes?
Yes but you will have to replace the rocker and the lifter and only if the camshaft itself has not been damaged… that’s what I did on the video I did not replaced camshaft or cam gears ⚙️

One cam Is exhaust the other is intake..u would ask for either a intake camshaft or exhaust camshaft..u can tell by looking at the cams..the one closer to the center of the engine is the intake the one in the outer side is the exhaust camshaft!

This might be dumb question but did u check the lifters? They are the ones that fail by getting stuck..in my case the lifter got stuck up and caused the rocker to get damaged but if the lifter gets stuck down then the rocker is just gonna be loose causing the noise also inspect the cam lobes
There has to be one that is making the noise.. unless ur tapping is coming from the bottom… they might not be too loose but if a lifter is not functioning properly it will tap since is not retracting and expanding as it should
Thats not a VVT failure....its chinese roller rocker needle bearing failing. The collect in your oil pan also..lol..ask me how i know. Newest revision is AH in the part number
No u loosen up the cam caps enough to free the rocker arms..if needed turn engine by hand to release tension on rocker arm but spin engine with all caps tightened down.. once the cam lobe is pointing up that will make it easier to remove by loosening a few caps.
Depend on the severity of the sound but u really don’t wanna risk much time on that… it could go from being a $150~$500 repair to a $1,500~$3,500 repair.
At a shop about $1200+ ...an independent mechanic like my self around $250 (if they are honest).. if you want to do it yourself it’s about $130 in parts, that’s including the intake manifold gasket, valve cover gaskets, and rocker..rockers are about $15~$25 each so it’s not bad.
Depending on how damaged it is if it’s to the point where it won’t engage the valve anymore then yes but u would definitely have a loud knocking sound coming from the top end.. look for vacuum leaks that’s more common to cause a bad acceleration

It will wear dow the cam and eventually break, sending metal pieces into the oil and bigger pieces will get stuck in other valve springs causing them to stay open and causing farther damaged to the engine.. not worth the risk..

Seems to be a manufacturing error because almost every 3.6 from dodge has the same problem..they have revise the engine in these past few year so it not as common on 2017 and up
@@xCHAV0x it seems that way I get the impression you could set up a shop dedicated to just swapping out those cam followers, lifters, phasers, and resealing that plastic thing with the oil cooler, and do very well.

U loosen the cam caps in order for the cam to lift up enough to remove the rocker

Also when my lobe is off the rocker arm just comes out, no compression on em. Any help?

Yes because usually the reason rockers go bad is because the lofter is stuck or got stuck at some point

Would you recommend chaging the timing chain/water pump when replacing the lifters?
If you’re planning on removing the chain then yes but if not then not really..this engine is not known to stretch the chain or a faulty pump.

Check your exhaust manifold gaskets they can cause a sort of tick noise..Try using a Stethoscope to pin point the source of the noise.
Did you change it without touching the cam phasers ?
Yes.. timing was not disturbed.

It's the labor not the parts that'll get you ... valve lifters and rocker arms are all pretty cheap.

Will bad lifters give me bad acceleration
Depending on how damaged it is if it’s to the point where it won’t engage the valve anymore then yes but u would definitely have a loud knocking sound coming from the top end.. look for vacuum leaks that’s more common to cause a bad acceleration

It will wear dow the cam and eventually break, sending metal pieces into the oil and bigger pieces will get stuck in other valve springs causing them to stay open and causing farther damaged to the engine.. not worth the risk..

Seems to be a manufacturing error because almost every 3.6 from dodge has the same problem..they have revise the engine in these past few year so it not as common on 2017 and up

I get the impression you could set up a shop dedicated to just swapping out those cam followers, lifters, phasers, and resealing that plastic thing with the oil cooler, and do very well.
What are the specs for the valve adjustable?
Or is it just replacing the rocker and the lifter, and that's it?
If the valve hasn’t been damaged then there is no need to adjust it..just replace rocker and lifter and torque everything down to specs.
