Lead singer Sebastian Bach said the song was written about the spiraling effect of drug use on his friend Steven Adler, the original drummer of hard rock band Guns N' Roses.
It's brutal, what dope did to Steven Adler. Hard to watch the downslide. Such a good dude, and so much talent. Heartbreaking. Sebastian Bach's amazing voice makes you feel the gut wrench. A beautiful dark song.

This same album featured three shattering emotionally desperate power ballads, this, Quicksand Jesus, and In A Darkened Room. All three are excellent and Sebastian delivers them each with an insane level of both emotion and technical ability. At this point is his career he was pretty much as good as it gets.
Slave to the Grind / Monkey Buisness ... People that were expecting a full album of pop rock got a dose of something in that album. Most bands (cough Metallica) (cough Def Leopard) (etc) that got softer over time, Skid Row went the other direction with that album at least. --- that said, I never kept up with them and have no idea what direction the albums after Slave to the Grind went.

I heard Subhuman Race, while not living up to the first two albums, is still very solid. I will have to check it out.

@@stanleymyrick4068 Was lucky enough to see Skid Row, with Bach, about 4 or 5 times from 89-92. Some of the best concert experiences I've ever had for sure
I've been listening to Skid since 1988 when they came out, and this song is one of my favorites. It's about heroine addiction. And Sebastian shows off his vocals in this one.
This song is actually about former Guns n Roses drummer Steven Adler. Steven got hooked on heroin. Lost his spot in Guns n Roses. He and Sabastian Bach were close friends.
I don't think it's personal demons. I think he's just a dick. The rest of his band could have cleaned up with a 30-year Slave to the Grind anniversary but they would rather not be around Sebastian bach.
This is one of the best rock ballads. I think all ballads on "Slave to the grind" are fantastic. The performance by Sebastian Bach is absolutely great. His voice can destroy walls, because it is very and very powerful.
This is my favorite Skid Row song, because it IS so obviously personal and painful. That pain birthed what I think are Sebastian's best vocals ever. He was going through some stuff on that album.
Skid Row came out my freshman year in highschool, and I love their first two albums. This is one of my favorite songs by them. As I have gotten older, it has taken a deeper meaning to me, and it hits me hard every time I hear it. I lost my daughter to heroin on February 14, 2017. She would have been 21 that year.
This is an amazing look into Sebastian Bach's incredible voice. The next logical step is for you to check out their song "Quicksand Jesus" which is also pretty amazing.
Hey guys what's up! Greetings from South florida! Skid Row was one of the underrated bands of that era. Awesome guitar playing. Check out their song Monkey Business. Or Slave to the Grind next. You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!
It does my heart good to hear Brad, of all people, say he was listening to the music and didn't pay much attention to the lyrics. Yes!! So amazing to see his musical journey and to start 'feeling' the music instead of just analyzing the meaning.
Sebastian’s voice in this is incredible….the song topic is extremely sad especially with the drug epidemic today but thank God Steven Adler (GNR Drummer) got clean
Wife here...Absolutely 100 🔥Loved Skid Row as a late teenager..., You Know I really thought they were a very talented Hair Rock/Glam Rock Group...!!..Still Do!!
Brad & Lex, saw this band at the Fox Theater in Atlanta back in 92 I believe was the year. 18 & life and I remember you are also great song by the band.
They opened for Ozzy at a Seattle concert after their first album, and my buddy and I were like "Who are these guys?? They RoCk!!" Whole band talented back then, a perfect mix. If I could have cloned Sebastian Bach for our own metal band we'd started back then, I would have, lol. 😎🤘
I remember reading an interview with Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue some time in the mid-late 80’s. They asked him about the popularity of glam metal. He said they it had become so popular all the record companies were scrambling to sign the next big thing. As a result a lot of “chump bands” are being signed. It would take a while for the bad ones to get weeded out. On the first point he was absolutely right. Most of the bands who debuted after 1985 were not as good as those from 1980-1985. Poison & Skid Row were definitely the best of those to emerge after 1985, GNR excluded because they were never a glam band. Sixx was wrong about the chump bands getting weeded out. As the 90’s came in grunge emerged and the glam baby was thrown out with the bath water.
When the music is so interesting that Brad doesn't pay full attention to the lyrics it's obviously on another level. I know the song is about out of control drug use but I cannot help but remember a close friend who died by his own hand around the time this album was released. The sentiment feels interchangeable.
Used to have one of the best voices in Hard Rock! You need to check out a band named Steelheart! Their song, “I’ll never let you go” is amazing. Your mouths will fall open when you hear his voice!
yeah Sebastian wrote and was singing this song about the decay and downfall of one of his best friends caught up in heroin addiction the original drummer of guns n roses steven adler . , thinking back on when they were younger and starting and dreams and music were all that mattered and how he was throwing away his life in dreams and all that mattered and had worked for how it was wasted time , he hurt and tried all he could to get him to straighten up but it was not in his hands to do . watching the self destruction took a toll on all that knew him .this is a deep and emotional song .

The horse they keep showing was a reference to heroin. There was a song called White Horse back in the 80s that referenced the sale and use of heroin/cocaine. Sebastain Bach was an 80's heartthrob. I agree with some of the other comments, Bach's personal demons just got the best of him.
Your interesting in what you talked about.. Addiction is bad, but there is no Chemicals Determinism. Some people can take drugs that are addictive to others and never get addicted. It has something to do with the way we are raised and our genes I believe.. Great reaction guys!
white horse you see in the video refers to heroin addiction and as many have already mentioned his good friend Steven Adler former GnR drummer was an addict, hes not dead though
Of all the bands of the 80's, Skid Row has to be one of the most underrated of the overrated bands. Skid Row paved the way for bands like Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, and Uriah Heep. A lot of people don't know this, but they formed in 1956 as a barbershop quartet, which is how their singer Johann Sebastian Bach, learned to sing and write symphonies, and play the harpsichord.
Yeah it is definitely about addiction. From what I understand people that can sing like he does stay away from drinking, drugs and smoking as much as possible as life choice. This song is about one of his best friends who basically wasted his life on heroin, Steven Adler (last name?) the original drummer of Guns n Roses. My brother idolized Sebastian Bach and he is one of the biggest reasons why he took hard rock vocal lessons and dare I say... he could probably give younger Sebastian a run for his money. He can hit some of those notes with as much sustain and my point is to maintain such an instrument he doesn't smoke nor has he used any drugs, he does drink in social occasions though. Thankfully, he is also not a mega-diva like Sebastian.
Metal is similar to classical music arrangement wise. That's why bands like Metallica played with San Francisco Symphony twice. Check that out. His friend pissed away his career as a drummer with Guns and Rose's for heroine.
Drug addiction has so many variables to it. To many to name. To put it simply it ruins the addicts life an the people's lives that are close to them. Everybody already knows this. But it's true.
It's literally about his friend being addicted to heroin. The line "The horse stampedes and rages" is all you need to figure it out. Horse is slang for heroin.

Who doesn't waste time? Just don't waste too much time, no matter the age. Bach may not be today what he was then, he's not supposed to be. The problem with the hair bands was their arrogance. He thought he was the gift, not the music. Once that happens, music moves to a different place like today.
