  • In this video, it’s going to be all about APS-C cameras and Lenses you should buy for canon mirrorless camera, wether it’s EF-M or EF-S mount. I’ll give you some basic explanation on what an APS-C camera is, what difference it has with a Full Frame Camera, what is crop factor...
    I started my journey in filmmaking and video with the #CanonM50 and bought lenses I knew I could also keep if I upgraded my camera body. That’s why I’ve build my kit with lenses that I would really use and give me the best value and quality.
    So if you're looking for a wide-angle lens or the best lens for your Canon M50, make sure to watch till the end.

      I never used it, but I took a bit of time to research about the lens. It looks like a good all around lens, to replace your kit lens, and it’s a bit sharper. The corners are a bit soft. But for the rest, it looks good for the price. The focal range is really versatile so... it might be a good choice.

    Hi, thanks for this video, I'm planning to buy a wide lens to replace the m50 kit lens. Mostly I'm shooting 4k (fix camera), what do you recommend between the ef-m 11-22, and the ef-s 10-18 (sharpness is the most important).
    Thanks

    • @Tvennet
      @Tvennet  3 года назад +4

      Instead of telling « you should buy this lens », I’m just going to point out a couple things and then give me reco. So you shoot in 4K...that means your crop is x2.56. That’s going to be difficult to be wide because at the widest focal lenght, 10mm is already 25.6mm which is wide but not super wide. Then there’s this question: are you going to upgrade your camera some day? If the answer is yes: then grab the 10-18mm. If the answer is no: 11-22mm. They’re practically the same lenses. I personally would go with the 10-18 because you can get one for really cheap and it isn’t a bad lens...but...if you’re really looking at getting a wide angle, drop the 4K and shoot 1080p. You’ll keep the dual pixel autofocus and with the je right export settings, you’ll get amazing results.

    the whole purpose of buying M series Cameras is to go compact and if you use the adapter + sigma lens, it defeats the purpose of it. So 22 MM F2 is a sensible choice in my opinion and it doesn't cost much (F1.8 V F2, is not such a big difference anyway)

    • @Tvennet
      @Tvennet  4 года назад

      Différent point of view. I bought the m50 not because it was compact but because I was on a budget and that it was one of the only cameras to offer everything I wanted. I consider being someone that « buys for the upgrade ». I knew I would at some point upgrade to something else than the M serie. A camera body can be changed, but lenses can be kept. And to be honest, canon doesn’t care about the M serie. The last rumors are from months ago without any roadmap, and besides Sigma that is doing an effort, third parties have a bit abandoned the M mount.

    • @GrantMcWilliams
      @GrantMcWilliams 4 года назад +2

      And the EOS-M lenses cream the old EF lenses for sharpness. I was getting ready to buy an adapter and some good EF lenses until I started watching back to back comparisons. The Nifty-50 has focus problems at wide aperture (it's OK at f 2.2), the Yongneo clone is even worse. If you put it behind the Viltrox speedbooster to get it back to 32mm and make it faster then it's almost unusable. A Viltrox Speebooster an the Canon 50mm costs about the same as the EF-M 32mm but the latter is much much nicer - cleaner, better bokeh. Even if you don't speedboost and add up your Canon 50mm STM with an adapter you're only $175 off of getting a good lens.
      The Sigma stuff is really nice but they make the same size lenses for every camera and just modify the mount so they're larger around then the EF-M lenses and the focus motors are a bit noisier.

    • @Tvennet
      @Tvennet  4 года назад +2

      Hey Blake, if you’re just a beginner and don’t really know a lot about cameras, I would recommend using the kit lens for a while. Learn the in’s and out’s, practice by shooting a lot of different things. There will be a moment where you’ll feel that you are limited, that’s the moment you’ll start looking into what will improve or help you progress. The kit lens can already do good things, and if you do it right, you’ll progress fast. Meanwhile, save every single penny or $ for the day you’ll want to buy something better.

    • @Tvennet
      @Tvennet  4 года назад +3

      It really depends on the kind of photography you want to make. For architecture and landscapes it’s going to be wide angle lenses, for portrait it’s going to be prime lenses or some telephoto lenses...and still you can do everything with any lens in fact.. there are 2 kind of ways to do it : 1) buy specifically for the kind of look you want or 2) buy a setup for versatility and covering a wider range of focal length. With option 2) I would try to still keep it minimal. Commonly there is what people call the « trinity » composed with a 16-35, 24-70, 70-200 and that covers almost any kind of thing you want. But that’s possible in full-frame and unfortunately the M50 is an aps-c camera. You can get a 10-18 or 11-22 for your wide angle shots, then the 18-35 or 17-55, and a 50-150 (but that’s a lens I don’t know about so I can’t talk about it). If you really want something that gives you quality, sharpness and despite the 600$ price is still the best value for your money: sigma 18-35 f1.8. I could make an entire video about it just because it’s a beautiful lens, the build quality et the picture quality are insane, the sharpness is extremely good...and a lens that regroups 5 prime lenses for that price is just the Best Buy you could do.

    • @Tvennet

      A lot of my product shots are actually shot with a Canon FD 50mm 1.4. It’s a vintage lens and fully manual, so I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re just starting.. even if I don’t really like it, the 50mm 1.8 is a good option for product shots. Maybe if you want something a bit sharper the Sigma 30 and Sigma 56 1.4 will be a better pick.

    I really enjoyed your cinematic videos with the M50. What you can produce with “inexpensive” equipment is really impressive. I have been using my iPhone with a gimbal but am ready to get more of a proper camera. The price of the M50 is attractive but I am also looking at the M6 Mark ii. I have also been thinking about a Sony a6600. It’s a tough decision because I feel like I’m committing to a system for a long time. Tough decision

    • @Tvennet
      @Tvennet  4 года назад +3

      Well...
      The M6ii does fix a couple of flaws from the M50, that’s a fact but it has no viewfinder which can be a problem for photography... The M50 is still a good choice, especially with the slight price drop. But if I didn’t have a camera today...I think I would pick the Sony. The menus are maybe a bit more complicated, but the technology, the HLG picture profile, the video quality and the low light performances still give it a little advantage. Not to mention the AF in video is also better in 4K and there’s no extra crop... I know it’s a tough choice, I was also in the same situation when I bought the M50...

    • @Brian-ss2dp
      @Brian-ss2dp 4 года назад

      @@Tvennet I appreciate the input. I have heard Sony’s menu system will have a learning curve. I will be using it for mostly video and would also get a gimbal with it (I really like my Movi iPhone gimbal), so good autofocus will be important. I don’t render in 4K but it’s nice to have in FCPX for flexibility. I am hoping Sony drops a new aps-c soon. If there is an a6700/7000 in a few months that might be the one I go with. But I really like your style. I felt like I was watching Gotham. Dark Knight-esque. Well done!

    Hi Thomas! Here's a couple questions (out of many): Is the Speed Booster also an Adapter? If so, since the Speed Booster can give you an extra f-stop for better light, wouldn't it be a good choice? Second, in terms of weight and bulk for traveling and hiking, does the adapter add significantly? What do you think of the EF-M 55-200mm. I love nature/wildlife shots, what would you suggest?

    • @Tvennet
      @Tvennet  4 года назад +1

      Hi Dan & Annie! So...the speedbooster is also an adapter BUT it only works with Canon EF lenses. To be totally honest, the extra stop of light isn’t really a big deal, it helps sometimes but there’s also something that isn’t told a lot: the speedbooster slightly soften the images...you’ll lose a tiny bit of sharpness, and some people report that it also drains the battery faster... in terms of weight, a regular adapter doesn’t weight a lot. Like 20g more which isn’t really a big difference in the bag. The speedbooster weights a bit more...around 100g if I remember. I don’t have the 55-200, but if you want to shoot wildlife/animals from a distance, it might be a good choice. For real nature/landscape I personally use something wide like the 10-18...hope it helps ;) and if you have more questions, I’m always here to help.

    Thanks for lens review. What lens you can recommend for m50 4k mode (1.6x crop), if mount camera on gimbal? I expecting 24mm ef-s become something around 61mm in 4k(M50), and can be useful with gimbal for portrait videos. I'm also looking for 30mm Sigma ef-m for 4k usage.

    • @Tvennet
      @Tvennet  3 года назад

      The first question is: why would you shoot in 4K?
      In addition to the extra crop, you lose the dual pixel autofocus. On top of that, you get horrible rolling shutter.
      Gimbals are great with wide angle lenses ( unless you’re looking for the Michael bay effect with a very compressed background).
      Then, the question is: what gimbal?
      The 2 lenses I can think of are the 10-18 or the sigma 16mm.
      I like the 24mm in 1080p for the 30-35mm look. I think it’s a very cinematic kind of image you get from it that makes great portraits plus give a bit of the background for context.
      That said, I still wouldn’t recommend shooting in 4K.

      Why 4k? Perhaps because the picture is more detailed.

    Got my Canon 80D with the 18mm-135mm (29mm-216mm full frame) f/3.5-5.6 IS USM which I think makes a good 'jack of all trades' lens. I don't have a 28mm-70mm equivalent lens as this fits that slot. I did some research and bought the Canon 10mm-18mm and the Sigma 1.8 Art lens and agree both good to have in your kit. The Sigma lens is my 'go to' lens for a lot of my landscape photos - not really into video shooting. the f1.8 gives you about a f2.8 full frame equivalent so it's great for low light situations. Just saving up to move to a mirrorless full frame. Hoping one of the new Canon R series over the next 2 years will fit that slot (please don't get greedy with prices Canon) but if not may switch so don't want to invest in more glass at the moment.

    • @Tvennet
      @Tvennet  4 года назад

      I really want to try someday a lens like the 18-135. Don’t know how I would feel having so much zoom range... the only thing that kept me from upgrading to the R was all video specs when using APS-C lenses...but I think for photography you would be ok. Hi Thomas, thanks for the video. I am also considering buying m50 for photography and the main reason is that you can find a lot of used Canon lenses at good prices. I know the Sony is better but Sony lenses cost a fortune. What do you think?

    • @Tvennet
      @Tvennet  3 года назад

      It’s a good question...
      The M50 is a very capable camera for photography, and it’s true that you have a big selection of canon lenses.
      Sony isn’t that much expensive if you stay away from their top lenses (GM) and if you look at Tamron or even viltrox lenses, they’re quite affordable. The benefit is that even if you buy an Apsc Sony (the a6xxx serie), the mount is the same as the full frame cameras (a7xx) so you can keep the lenses if you upgrade.
      Reason why again I bought the adapter on the m50 because I wanted to upgrade in the future.

There are better recommendations such as the STM version of the 50mm f1.8 EF, the 40mm f2.8 EF STM, and lastly there's the 35mm f1.4 M If if you want to shoot on canon. Your view is based mainly on shooting video, so you're basing the recommendation on that, whereas I'm shooting stills only.

      For food or product photography, it’s very popular to shoot with a 50mm or a 90mm Macro (talking full frame focal lenghts). So for the m50, a 35mm and maybe a 50 or 85mm with a regular adapter would be good. If you don’t have an adapter, I would also recommend looking at the Sigma 30mm and 56mm 1.4 they’re really good and sharp. 22 mm is a good general purpose lens. Note this does not mean it can do everything. It is nice and compact. 50 mm is more a portrait lens, much more limited. However it brings more extra when compared to the lens.

      Thé sigma 30mm f1.4 Art comes in 2 mounts for canon: the EF-S version which needs an adapter, and they released an EFM version that doesn’t. The EFS version is an ART DC, the EFM is an ART DN. Check the side of the lens ton see which one you have or consider buying (there’s also like a 100$ difference between both lenses)

      You don’t need a specific lens. You need to push you aperture to at least f8 and above. The lower your aperture, the more depth of field it will make. You’ll need more light because it’s going to be darker, or push your iso to 800 (not above)...

    I don't know if you owned any of the Canon M lenses but I think you're 100% incorrect they're very sharp. I own 7 L series lenses from from Canon and I've tried them on my Canon m5 and the m Glass is almost as sharp. I think you need to go back to the drawing board and try the m Glass again before not recommending it. Most people that have m50s and Canon M5 have at least two m-series pieces of glass because they're such good quality and the size is incredibly small so it is great for hiking trips and to carry around for street photography. Just to let you know where I'm coming from I've been shooting professionally for over 30. Ashley use an adapter on my to the viltrox speed booster and just a regular to fit the EF lenses on my M5. I do like to use my EF lenses with my M5 but please try the M glass again.

    • @Tvennet
      @Tvennet  4 года назад

      The issue here is that everyone has his own approach and expectations.
      My recommendations are based on my experience and what I'm expecting for what I do after actually going to the drawing board and spending hours watching, reading and testing in store.
      Like I said in the video, I don't buy EF-M lenses (but tried them) because I don't want to invest in lenses I can't grow with. And in addition, it's very difficult to sell EF-M lenses (at least on my side of the planet) because it's not a very popular camera system. You'll wonder why I bought the M50 then. The answer is budget. It was the only camera in my budget at that time.
      I never said that EF-M lenses are Bad or Horrible, I just said that if you look at the EF-M Range, they're not very fast (except the 3 sigma lenses, a couple of Samyang lenses and the canon 32mm which is 1.4 and the 22mm f2), and most of the zoom lenses have variable aperture.
      For photography, well yeah maybe it's good for a majority of people, but for what I am doing, it's not. Not a single lens in the EF-M range for example can compete with the 18-35. None.
      And with the recent rumours that are around, the EF-M range is most certainly going to disappear and be replaced by the Crop Censor R camera (regarding the fact that Canon already has a speedbooster that is going to be announced this year).
      Everyone has it's own taste, his own preferences, and I don't disagree with you, but it's just not my kind of lenses. And I'm pretty sure, you won't like my next video either...because I actually don't recommend the speedbooster.

    In my view anyone buying a M50 or M6 just to use big EF or fast Sigma glass is missing the point. The object of these small mirror less bodies with smaller than FF sensors is portability. With a great majority of photography moving to social media you do not need the added resolution of FF. Instead in many cases a M50 can go where a 5DMkIV can’t. Try hiking the Scottish highlands or the Alps for 7 days with a 5D system on your back.
    The best camera is the one you have with you at all times. For many of us it is our mobile phones. The sub 400 gram bodies (M50, XT-30, A6400, etc) with their plastic lenses are a step up from that. Anyone who need more is a professional or wants to be one or can hire a Sherpa to carry their equipment.
    In short think of the camera as a SYSTEM. Think that the M in Canon’s M50 or M6 stands for MOBILITY. Mating a 24-70/2.8 or a 300/4 to a M50 defeats THAT object of the M6/M50.
    The 11-22, 32/1.4, 22/2, 55-200, and 15-45 kit lens are not the fastest nor are they rugged or weather proof but you can fit a whole 5 lens M series system in the space and weight of a 5D with a 24-70/2,8. And 95% of the time the M system will prove to be more versatile than the 5D with its 24-70/2.8.
    In all but the most tricky lighting a M6 with a 22/2 can make for the best street camera. Its unobtrusive, pocketable, and fast enough even for dusk and low light situations. Besides I can use the Canon app to wireless grab the images from my M6/M50 and post to Instagram or Facebook without much trouble. In good light the 11-22 works equally well.
    So please think before mating expensive, big, heavy fast glass to a MOBILE ILC camera.

      Each his own point of view 🤷🏻‍♂️ I always followed the « invest in glass » rather than in the camera. I bought the m50 because of it’s price. When it came out, non of the Rebels did have to specs or the budget I was looking after. And like I said, I already owned EFS Lenses. I knew that at some point I would upgrade the camera, and didn’t want to try selling all my gear to start over. And like I mentioned in a previous comment, the after market for M cameras or lenses is very very niche. I get that it is against your point of view and I accept it, but accept that there are also people like me who don’t want to invest exclusively into one system. And in the end, it’s what you do with the gear that matters...

    • @navinadv
      @navinadv 3 года назад

      Thomas Vennet fair point. When mirrorless started gaining traction, it was obvious that the EF/EFS mount would have to be discarded for a newer mount primarily because of the lens to sensor distance is much shallower.
      Looking down the road, Canon will not be able to support 4 lens systems. EF, EFS, EFM and RF. There just aren’t enough cameras being sold to support so many systems. While there is some excellent EF glass out there, I suspect Canon will replace most of these with RF equivalents. EFM is going to fill a small niche of those who want something more than a mobile phone but don’t want the size, weight and cost of the RF system. EF L glass will always have a market albeit a shrinking one as more RF and EFM glass becomes available. The same will be true of the EFS glass but to a lesser extent.
      FYI, I have owned several EFS cameras: including the 20D, 40D, 60D and the 77D. I also still have about 11 EF and EFS lenses. Both zooms like the 24-105/4 and primes like the 50/1.4. There is nothing wrong with these lenses but when I am travelling and weight is a factor, it is the M50 and EFM lenses that I take with me. If I am shooting at home the 5D and 16-35 make more sense but for casual home shooting I find greater use of mobile phones than camera systems.
      Currently there is no way to use RF glass on anything but the RF bodies, so collecting RF glass makes little sense, hence I get your desire to collect EF glass. I would not collect EFS glass as I don’t see Canon supporting the EF/EFS systems much longer and EFS glass won’t be able to be used on RF bodies.
      Happy shooting.

      Some think of the EOS-M system as a "dead end" and thus, should not invest too much on EF-M mount lenses. Well, it need not be the case. I see a future in the EOS-M system beside their full ftame cameras like the R5/6. All one need is a good body or two and a few good lenses. The EOS-M system has survived all these years despite its skeptics. Not many people can afford the new Canon Mirrorless FF cameras. They are still quite big eventhough it is slightly smaller than the DSLRs. Oh, the RF lenses are even larger than many of the DSLR lenses besides having a steep price. No doubt their optical quality is record breaking. From the user point of view, the EOS-M cameras especially the current M6 Mk2 is more than adequate. Its great for travel and street photography due to its smaller size. I have even use the M6 Mk2 with the EF-M 32mm f/1.4 and the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 for studio photography. They are very compact and capable. To use EF-S lenses with an adaptor on the M cameras is possible but will make it much bigger. By the way, i have also bought an EF to EF-M adaptor but have not use it since I own it. Earlier, I was also thinking of using some of my L lenses on my M6 Mk2.

    • @Tvennet
      @Tvennet  3 года назад

      Well, it’s not about being a dead end or not...it’s looking at what plans are at Canon. I mean, even if the M6ii is not that old and the rumored M50ii still coming this year, Canon hasn’t any real plans to release new lenses, third party lenses except sigma and sirui aren’t interested in releasing new lenses, and Canon is going to release an APS-C RF mount camera... is it really still worth investing in the M line? They’re awesome cameras for the budget and size...but I mean, if you’re really knowing you’re going to evolve, that you are planning sooner or later to go with a full frame camera...better invest in glass you can keep. The M system is quite niche (at least, in Europe) and even if I bought the M50 because it was the camera in my budget, I know that it would be almost impossible to sell it for a decent price and glass is also very hard to sell because there aren’t much people using these cameras, or already have the exact same lenses... I personally didn’t care about the size with the lenses, I wanted lenses that would help me shoot what I want, and grow with them...I never said that all EFM lenses are crap. You mention the sigma lenses, the 22 and 32...and I agree, they are great lenses. But not the lenses I personally wanted. Does that mean that my opinion is wrong? No, it’s just my taste...

      You may well be right about the cost of the Canon efm lenses, but the third party lenses are about the same price as for a Sony mount. As you know, several manufacturers have filled the void. I have the three sigma lenses and a few Laowa lenses, all of which are excellent. I also have the M6 mark ii and don't see Canon abandoning the efm mount anytime soon. By the way, sorry about my attitude!

      No worries about the attitude, I understand your point of view. It was only my opinion, and each his own. How’s that M6ii by the way?

      The M6/ii is a great camera, except it doesn't have the flippy screen of the M50. I currently use the M50 for vlogging, but am waiting on a Smallrig plate for the M6/ii so I can mount the microphone on the side. With the covid 19 lock down in Australia, haven't been out much to use either camera - only got the M6/ii last week.
