Very good and simplistic tutorial. Might be worth mentioning as I have had trouble with my Hunter 41AC, where the boom seems a mile long, to have the outhaul and vang loose to ensure the ‘pull’ is evenly distributed on the foot and leech. This is especially crucial is boom angle shows one or the other receiving most of the ‘pull’.

    Great video
Wish I watched this a week ago
Raised the main at the dock in 10 knots of wind and had bags and a folded over leech
Big mess out on the water the next day

Thank you! Very useful video. Forgot to mention the pin on the roller in the mast, needs to be changed to IN or Out, to get the ratchet working as desired

This video has been very helpful, the best video I could find on roller furling the mainsail. One question, the furling mechanism on the mast, is it in the locked position? It is not mentioned at all, and appears to be in the locked position. Thanks

Thanks for a great video. In order to reef as the wind picks up, is it possible to reef the main while sailing on the jib alone? I have a Hunter 44 with B&R rig which has the spreaders swept back quite a bit.

just read your note/question. the simple answer is yes. i prefer being on a port tack (assumes you role in counter clockwise). this will keep the luff fully pressed against the slot in mast. then you don't really need to keep pressure on out haul, the pressure of the sail against the mast slot will or should be ample. you don't want to be too far off the wind... maybe 60 degress. hope this is helpful.

What is the purpose of opening the lock for the main sheet?

I belive it is to take the preasure out of the sail to make it easier to furl in and out. By letting the boom swing free in the wind as it wishes. It will depower the sail, reducing the friction at the mast/ where the sail enter. Hope this explenation makes sense. and sorry for any typos.

Recently aboard an H356 with the jib powered up and new-to-furling-mains opened it with traveler and mainsheet locked. A puff and instantly, the main was in full glory, not good. I'm surprised the bang was three years ago without further incident. Most principles still apply as with a traditional slab reef.
