The Benefits of Social Isolation

  • When we have no choice than to be isolated (because of the coronavirus for example) we might benefit from looking at the positive side of this. Of course, this is in no way intended to downplay the severity of current events regarding COVID-19. Rather, it's an attempt to give the isolation that many people face right now a bit of a positive spin (for what it's worth).

If you know how to open the lock, you will get the necessities you need and be fine, but if you can't figure out the lock, you will have to deal with having this locked gift with you and the knowledge that the only thing between you and getting what you need is a stupid puzzle lock.

Reflection can become a spiral down that you can't get out of. You're problem solving by yourself, or distracting from your problems, usually through escapism or substance abuse. If you fail at each new potwntial solution, you get used to everything you can think of failing.
That's when isolation becomes a purgatory you can't escape. You wish for night all day so you can sleep through the next 10 years and wake up to see if things are better. And if they aren't, then maybe you just want to sleep through the next 40 years.

How many people here have truly experienced true prolonged social isolation?lots of people say they enjoy a moments solitude away from friends and family for a couple hours maybe a day or two or a week at most.....but solitude is not the same as true or prolonged social isolation.....
How many people here have gone by a month or two without speaking to anyone other than cursory words with a cashier buying something.....or an entire year having less conversations than the fingers on one hand?
Or near complete social isolation since their teenage or childhood years, and are now in their adulthood,5,6,7,8 even a decade, speaking so little they barely know who they are anymore.....praying day after day for salvation but it never comes....if we pray and pray for salvation,is it god's fault we remain unloved?
But at this point we are beyond prayers.
Every where u go u see people living perfect happy lives, while urs is a non starter in comparison.even if u like to think the world is in a conspiracy against you,it doesn't even seem believable anymore.u like to think u are that tree in the middle of the forest that falls but no one else is around to hear it but truth is reality is colder than that.....the world doesn't even know that it doesn't even care.
At the end of the day u are left with not even ur past, just empty shattered pieces of meaningless fantasies that have grown stale and yellow, that can't even sustain ur reality anymore.
Man is not build for isolation.
Jordan Peterson is right, isolation only leads to insanity then death.there is no blade runner 1982,there is no welcome to nhk, there is no altered carbon,no the double, there is no consolation.
      Only death.

Most DETEST "isolation" in any form, as it forces them to confront themselves... And they will do ANYTHING to avoid that "scary" prospect... Unless you're an introvert like myself... Then "isolation" is my NORMAL. I look soooo forward to being home, BY MYSELF, behind my locked doors, completely CUT OFF from everyone. I have TVs but they are rarely if ever on. Being online, here, what comments I leave are most days the only talking to anyone, that I do. Reading, projects around my house, gardening, my animals... I am content to stay emersed in my "current focus," void of interference or interruption from/by anyone. Days into weeks pass & a neighbor will stop just to make sure I'm ok... And I LIKE IT THIS WAY...💜

this is the only time in your life when you will have months with nothing going on, and your missing out on nothing. if you’re in highschool or college and have months off, you will not have another break like this until you are retired. take this time to think about your life and plan it. to realize your priorities and where your mind should be. this is a crucially necessary time to finally have no excuses towards doing something you have always wanted to do. there are no more excuses not to start. the gods have literally given you a plague so that you can have this chance to pursue things that you want to pursue. stepping away is necessary to realizing who we are. we can live and be uninfluenced by others. realize that this time could be the greatest time for self improvement that ever could happen to you. it could be the time you realize that after the break you hate going back to your job so much you just decide not to come back. spending this time sleeping or playing games is a waste of the greatest potential of your life. it will never come again. not for decades. this is once in a blue moon. if you cannot sit with yourself and on your own who are you? are you even an individual if you can only survive with others in your life. what we do in the next 6 months (assuming 3 months off of school or work and 3 months of summer) will no doubt define us. we need to ask ourselves now if this is the self we want to be for the rest of our lives because this is the test. if we don’t like ourselves now, in the free times of life, we won’t like it later, especially when things get busy. to know who someone is you can simply ask what they did during this time and that will say it all. “step out of the river and realize there is another stream.”

I'm reading a translation of Tao Te Ching from Lao-Tzu often. Honestly, the fact of not thriving on human affairs so much and relying on simple things like walking around Nature is such a blessing. When you know you don't need to put pressure on yourself and just live in simplicity and harmony with the flow, nothing can stop you of enjoying the journey on Earth.

    Solitude is your greatest strength.
Take it from me, I’ve spent a year isolated from society... in that time, I was able to do so much more with my life, open up new possibilities for myself which never would’ve been possible had I still been around society... since I never fitted in and all my “friends” were fake... every time I tried to happy, I failed...
So I followed the backwards law.
    The world is your enemy
    Happiness is an illusion
And pain & suffering is the key to life
Because it gives the experience needed to know the meaning of life:
    Nothing.
Life is whatever you want it to be.
    A reality
    A dream
    A game of chess
    An adventure.
But the thing is... in the end, does anything we do even matter?
In sometime, everything and everyone we know, including ourselves.....
*Will be forgotten, weather we accept it or not...*

I have lived in total isolation for ten years now. Humans are complex creatures that I have never really understood. I am actually terrified of them because I know how cruel they can be my own family are just as brutal. I don’t celebrate anything like Christmas , Easter and all the other public holidays . No birthdays not even my own. There is no gift giving or receiving or sending cards or phone calls from anyone. The calendar doesn’t matter to me nor dose time or space. I live with nothing no fridge no microwave just a small table and a blow up bed on the floor. I own 1 plate one pot and a tiny pan, 1 knife 1 spoon 1 fork. Soap toothpaste toothbrush and a 2 litre bottle of Moisturiser. Oh and a large soup cup that serves as a bowl and cup. 1 pair of sneakers, socks 2 pairs of jeans and 2 denim shirts. 1 cut my hair with a small pair of Scissors and I keep it short for convenience I don’t own or wear any make up at all either. And that’s my life. I am an atheist, I haven’t got a soul in this world , I never get sick and I Thoroughly clean my teeth morning and night and still have my own health Beautiful white teeth. I haven’t visited a dentist in 25 years and I can’t remember the last time I visited a doctor. I walk everywhere, I live right on the ocean and I swim in summer and I am near the national parks in NSW Australia and I hike in winter. I have alway loved the way the Japanese used to live about 100 years ago with very little furniture, and I am so in love with Japanese houses and Japanese gardens. Everything is so minimal. I sleep on the floor every night and have the best sleep and I don’t own any chemicals to clean my home I use pure soap, water and a cotton cloth to clean and a straw broom to sweep the rug and floor. I live eat and sleep in a tiny room. I am 60 years of age . Extremely healthy and very content. I do enjoy learning on the internet and writing comments on things I have an interest in Psychology. I hope to live a long happy life like the Japanese villages do. 😊

When you're apart from your significant Other letter writing is vital. Also in writing your feelings and thoughts one is able to be more fully aware and philosophical without the 'diversion' of touch and facial expressions.
In letters you actually get to know the other person BETTER. It is a blessing not a hindrance.
How do I know this for sure? When I first met my boyfriend we were homeless and our 'getting-to-know-you' sessions were restricted to conversations in the car he was living in. No sex. Only holding hands and light kissing. We felt our conversations gave us a solid basis for our love.
Then a while later he was in prison for a time and letters were all we had. Bottom line?? We then were totally together for
THIRTEEN love-filled years. Those letters helped us sooo much.
So don't be sad dear. Know that you are blessed. Some day you will be together again.
Sadly, now I am separated from my Big Guy Jeff as he just passed on. 😢😢😢 We still talk. He is not that far away.😊

Sorry, but that's a wrong conclusion. Humans are not born into houses, it's the other way around - we lost the connection to (our) nature by just sitting indoors with computer work and TV - that's just one factor, why our immune system got weak compared with wild animals or outdorsy natives. Life does not depend on having a stationary home. Humankind started being nomadic. Settlement is a young phenomenom. Less than 8000 years old. This is an emergency situation and we as species should not become used to stay indoors with gaming or wasting our precious life-span with consuming products or social media content - that's exactly the main thing here, to be careful to assume, living and working just at home, would be a benefit for people and a kind of protection against pathogenic germs and infectious diseases. There is no comparison to introvert scientists who need space and solitude for their thoughts and ideas to evolve or to spiritual breaks from stressful all-day duties.

    • @villebooks
      @villebooks 4 года назад +3

@@SC-gw8np Unfortunately not true, the digital markets work online and they need people to stay indoors - "in order to order" products and to watch ads and recommendations via algorithms to purchase more.
The global economy makes money in/with the digital surface.
People, who are naturally outdoor dudes, are no good clients.
      They order statistically less stuff.
In near future, we will have less and less active workers in factories or offices.
Data is the new most valuable product to trade with.

    • @SC-gw8np
      @SC-gw8np 4 года назад +1

villebooks Where are the statistics you claim? Digital markets work with and without people staying home. And people buy the products usually because they fall for marketing tactics or to show off to their friends/other people. If they no longer need to go outside for the time being, where is the incentive to buy more products?
What do you mean by outdoor dudes? There are two types: 1) who prefers the great outdoors/nature, 2) oversocialised type who has a lot of friends, is part of groups etc.
I agree that subgroup 1 people are less inclined to participate in consumerism, but not the second subgroup.

and 2. That when I was only being myself I got laughed at or merely ostracized. So at that young age I decided that I liked my OWN COMPANY instead of the group's uncomfortable company.
I've tried to have 'best friends' before but it never worked out. Always it got old pretty fast and, like a turtle pulling it's head in, I've ALWAYS retreated .
So I'm like a lot of ppl here commenting, the so called isolation of the pandemic just didn't affect me much. But having to wear a mask and being unable to greet folks with my smile HAS BEEN UNCOMFORTABLE. Whenever I've had to deal with The Public I pretend to be a charming extrovert and that usually works. But doing that is tiring. Always happy to go back to being alone. I bet I'm NOT THE ONLY ONE who feels this way. 😊😢😝😄 ✌.

These benefits of isolation are only true in short doses. If we had really stuck to "14 days to flatten the curve" or really stuck to "3 months to flatten the curve" then I would appreciate this video's perspective more. At the start of the pandemic, I had a sense of relief, because I could take time to slow down and focus on myself and my home. To be frank, there was also a lot of anger because at that time, my personal growth plan relied on trying to be more social, building my community, and that was taken away. I'm lucky that I'm a natural introvert with a "white collar" job that could be done remotely. I'm lucky that most of my hobbies can be done alone, at home. But it's been a year and a half now. Even though official lockdown measures are loosening, there's still only a fraction of the standard social opportunities available now, compared to what would have been considered normal before the pandemic. And most offices that can afford to do so are encouraging their people to work remote when able. And it seems like many vaccinated people still have a fear of those who may be secretly not vaccinated, or those openly not vaccinated, and are still reticent to congregate in public spaces that might have 'dirty' people in them. Likewise, people who feel the vaccine is unnecessary for them due to natural antibodies, low personal risk factors, or perhaps they felt the vaccines were unsafely rushed, are resentful of the current trend toward social shaming and are likely to avoid areas or events that might have vaccination or masking policies in place. At this moment there seems to be a culture of "well, I survived the lockdown, and I'm not totally comfortable with, or trusting of, other people, so I'm just going to stay at home." So even with lockdown policies easing, some people seem to have shifted into a "lockdown culture" and its just been compounding the effects of isolation in our society that were considered a problem long before the pandemic. Remember when people were concerned about the "loneliness epidemic" caused by too much digital communication and not enough face to face communication? Now that behavior is seen as a virtue in some places. The best benefits of isolation come when the isolation is a choice, that's what makes it empowering, relaxing, and a platform for personal growth. However even the most introverted person still needs social contact, in person, face to face, real contact. When we can't choose to be isolated or choose to be social, then whichever one we're forced into can be like a prison. It's true, that personal resilience for either state can be increased with positive thinking and proactive steps to mitigate discomfort, but it still can feel very oppressive when you can't choose, can't control, your level of isolation, or your level of social connectedness.

I couldn’t agree more! Although times are incredibly challenging I have cherished my forced working sabbatical. More time to reflect, create, peruse inspirational books, and continue working on my own book. Thanks for your wonderful videos!

I am an autistic schizophrenic, I find isolation natural.
When I was young I had friends, probably because I masked my autism and my schizophrenia was in its early stages.
In middle age I have no friends as I withdrew 30 years ago and wanted to be on my own.
I have no relationship by choice and I am happy in my own space.
I say Good Morning to my neighbours and I like the occasional chat with strangers at bus stops etc. but I don't like to be involved with people.

You're so precious for not feeling the NEED of social relationships. Never change. Have some relationships ONLY if you want. 🥺 I would like to be like you. You are the symbol of the defeat of fear of loneliness.

Solitude is a blessing. Most people are awful and awful to be around with their dysfunctional personalities, bad hygiene and constant opinions on every last thing...

Absolutely love this. I have a lot of friends not coping at the moment. Although I try and tell them it can be awesome if you 'just be', i fine it hard to explain it, so thank you🙏

I would enjoy this isolation for a bit but honestly, the news has me completely terrified. I have never had anxiety as bad as this, and isolation is really getting to me. I am now on some anti anxiety medication but it's not going to kick in for a while. Stay safe everyone, and remember its OK not to enjoy social isolation.

It is hard to switch off from news but limit the amount you watch. Also try Yoga and deep breathing meditation exercises to calm your thoughts.
Live in the moment and try not worry about a scenario that might not happen.
Nothing stays the same for ever and this will pass.

Love the message, but I have been socially isolated for 2 years now, that's why this lockdown does not bothers me. Instead i am now having many realizations, reflections and my creativity then again came out. And i know these are all temporary and make the most out of it.

I don't make enough money to donate for your channel, but I don't skip ads and hit the like button thinking it would help you earn money through RUclips. I watch your videos every morning while eating my breakfast. I live alone, and your videos help me all the time; your videos are one of the reasons why I'm still alive. Thank you so much for your help.

I go to work and sometimes the store, that's all I do. Might be over doing the social isolation thing, but it's what I've done for a decade now so I guess it is what we do.

The hardest thing to master is our mind. I think these coming weeks will force people to look within, to gain insight and discover new strengths. Family, health and time. Great video, I look forward to the next one.

I think the only advantadge of be depressed is that this lookdown looks like another normal day to me.
I fact, I start to feeling better in this break of the fast paced life that was leaving me behind.
I am taking this like an oportunity to reset and restart again, with an enhanced mood and a renewed behaviour.
