    That's exactly what I did. My first take-off in this plane I pushed throttle to the max without giving it a second thought. As I ran out of runway, my engine died and I was perplexed. Then I realized what was happening and it's been smooth ever since!

    Hello, having both aircraft (arrow T and non T), and also flying regularly it, the original arrow T tail rotates correctly at 60, you shoudn't have to pull the joystick to the max. And actually very same apply to non T tail. I would say that trim and global vertical command are not accurate. For the rest, it's a great aircraft.
    I would add that performances are a bit too much. I can make 140ktas at 8000 75 percent, this baby is faster

      I think the handling of the JF aircraft is a little rough at the moment due to the changes from the sim updates. There’s a flight model update coming soon hopefully.

  • @chrisah1

    when trying to land the turbo arrow IV the nose was yo-yoing about and thought it was the worst airplane ever with the worst nose heavy tendency that I couldn't trim out. Then I discovered it was my fault for not putting flaps all the way down and not keeping at 75kts on approach to land.................*facepalm* (never flown it before IRL or on sim and didn't read the books). With full flaps it is absolutely DREAMY to land in the sim. It is a very fast and slippery aircraft on approach if you decide to add any throttle and even on the climb it has a tendency to shoot up very fast. The way this lands and handles I am very much looking forward to learning on one before I rent a turboprop.

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  2 года назад +1

      Yep, so long as you keep the speed up it lands very nicely, which is just what the real one is like. Glad you’re enjoying it!

    Finally, I learned what that annoying flashing yellow light above the 3 landing gear lights is for!!! NOW if only someone can tell me why my VR Focus or zoom function does not work for me!
    I read it's functional in the Arrow Turbo IV but not the 3, but for the life of me nothing I have tried will work with it!
    It's mapped by default to the right mouse button, but that does not work. Neither does the button on my Alpha Yoke. Its driving me nuts, especially when it obviously is working for others!
    It appears to be working in your system too. What can I do to make that VR Zoom key work???
    Great review and explanation of the planes features and functions!!! You have a new subscriber!
    Oh and yeah, I can see how that automatic gear extension system could be a killer!
    If you ever needed to do an off field emergency landing or ditch it in the water you'd want to land with the gear up!!! And taking valuable time to focus away from flying while disabling the automatic gear extension when you're performing an engine out landing could be fatal!
    If I were flying the real turbo I'd probably find myself in that situation mighty darn fast I believe because I'd probably burn that engine out and fast!
    I'm surprised I haven't done it in the sim yet!

      Glad I could be of service for explaining the infamous blinking light! I honestly can’t help with VR since I don’t have any kind of VR setup, but perhaps a quick email to Just Flight or a post on the MSFS Forum could help?
      Yep, you’re right about the gear, that’s one of the main reasons why it was ordered to be disabled by the US FAA at one point.

    This brings back lots of memories. I owned a Turbo Arrow III during most of the ‘80s. Particularly memorable was the overheating and shock cooling (as we called it). I added a cooling cowl kit to help (but not completely solve) the heating problem. As to shock cooling, the main thing was not to get in a position to have to pull power then descend. The engine stops producing heat and the wind over your engine was quite cooling. I asked for a lot of long descents from far out and center mostly granted the requests. That frequently resulted in incredible ground speeds. Once coming to Houston from El Paso, I had three controllers ask to confirm that I was really a Piper Arrow.
    Thanks for the memories.

    Ive a question: If a T-tail is not suited for rough strips then why does the PC-12 (an excellent rough strip/almost bush flying aircraft) have a T-tail? How have they solved those problems?

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  3 года назад

      I don’t know anything about the PC-12, but most powerful turboprops have their horizontal stabilisers removed from the prop slipstream to avoid significant changes in control loading based on power settings. It also reduces vibrations through the airframe and controls. It could be that the PC-12’s elevator gains authority at quite a low airspeed, mostly negating the negative effect on short field performance, but you’d have to ask a type rated pilot for a proper explanation!

    I don’t quite understand which exact lights I should have on while starting and taxiing. Just the “radio lights” scroll thingy?

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  3 года назад +1

      The general drill is that the navigation (sometimes called ‘position’ lights), the red/green on the wingtips and white on the tail tip should be on all the time the plane has power. In the arrow that’s the rotating wheel to the left of the fuel pump switch. If the plane has a rotating or flashing red beacon light on the top or bottom somewhere, you put that on just before starting the engine. Taxi lights (if you have them) go on just before you start moving the aircraft and the high intensity flashing strobes and landing lights go on once you begin to pull onto an active runway. This is a code which is taught to airport ground crew, who will know when an aircraft is about to start or begin moving by what lights it has on 😊

    • @morid1n
      @morid1n 3 года назад

      @@FlyFromHome Thanks. I was asking specifically about the Arrow. The “radio lights” wheel should be used all the way to the runway? And nothing else? And there I’d turn on the landing lights + strobes?

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  3 года назад

      The Arrow III/Turbo Arrow III also has a beacon, so you’d have that on too. It’s the split rocker switch next to the strobes.

    Is it just me, or are pretty much all the small aircraft on fs2020 feeling over powered? For example, in the cessna 172, you should be climbing at about 80kts.... but in the sim, that thing will climb at about 100kts and easily 1000fpm...i almost have to pitch up to almost 20 degrees just to keep it around 80kts (with 1 notch of flaps)
    Also, anyone else notice a problem with the first piper arrow 3 from carenado...? That thing wouldn't take off no matter what. When reaching rotation speed, the tail would lift up and nose stuck on the ground and wont move.

The Turbo is the most complex of the three if you want a challenge - it’s also pretty quick at high altitude if you need a bit more performance. The regular Arrow is somewhere between the two. Just depends what you’d prefer, they’re all absolutely excellent renditions of the real aircraft 😊

      @@FlyFromHome Thanks for your reply, very kind of you. I have just got the none turbo Arrow 3, as you said, somewhere in between. But knowing me, i will get the warrior also.👍

    Best review I’ve seen of an aircraft for MSFS.
    Also shows how wrongly I have been flying this thing. The educational value can’t be understated.
    Do you have a link to your checklists?
    What is the purpose of cycling the Alternate air?
    Do you step on the brakes before extending the landing gear?
    I’m sorry so many questions.
    Great job.

      Glad you enjoyed it! I'll try to answer your questions in order -
      -The checklist I used is here - www.freechecklists.net/Resources/Piper/PA-28R-201T+(Turbo)+Arrow+IV/
      but some of the procedures I used are company specific and are memorised. HASSELL and FREDA checks are standard things taught by most flying schools in the UK. The in-game checklist is excellent by the way, and is adapted from the real life one.
      -Cycling the alternate air is to check for any change in manifold pressure or RPM that would indicate that the main air intake is becoming blocked.
      -No, but the pre-landing checklist my company uses suggests pumping the brakes to check that the lines are still pressurised (and therefore the brakes are still working) and to check that the parking brake hasn't been inadvertently engaged in flight. Both of these would make landing a bit interesting if not checked! You do pump the brakes before *retracting* the gear however, as this stops the rotation of the main wheels before they enter the wheel wells. The nosewheel bay has a little rubber block inside for this purpose.

    Tried my 1st landing in the Arrow 4.... seems very jittery. Meant to be that way ?
    I had flaps down and no wind. Compared to stock props it was a real stallion.

      What speed were you approaching at? If you’re a bit slow the T tail can lose a lot of effectiveness. Other than that it could be your control settings? I’ve always found that it lands pretty much like the real one does - i.e like a brick with wings 🤣

      @@FlyFromHome Having watched your in depth videos I now understand why the Turbo 4 is a bit twitchy. It's handling does change depending on speed and pitch.
      In some ways the realistic behaviour is a challenge, but I may start with the 3 first and go back to the 4 after I gain some experience.
      The default Cessnas are on rails -- aka -- "toys", in comparison... that's a fact !
      Thnx.

    What freeware aircraft would you recommend that feels realistic? GA or bush... Thanks.

      I don’t know if it counts, but I’m a big fan of the DA62X Project mod. It’s fantastic for a free bit of kit.

      @@FlyFromHome Thanks for the recommendation. You were right. I flew the DA62X last night and it's a great plane. I also have been enjoying the Diamond DA40ng mod.

    How can I switch to the new interior versus the worn version? Thanks

      If I remember rightly you swap a file round in the aircraft root folder. If you read the documentation that comes with the plane it should tell you what to do.

    Superb review as usual. Yours are probably the best one can find and I've no doubt that Just Flight and Carenado have benefited mightly from them just as their customers have. If there's one thing I shall take away with me though, it's that wonderful phrase that I shall try to work into every conversation I have from here on, "Window of Variance". Thankyou.
    By the way, don't you think that MS and/or Asobo have gone a bit overboard with the volume of their airfield traffic? At Doncaster there was a Mercedes crew-carrier moving around and you would think it was fitted with a Rolls Royce Merlin engine with stub exhausts!

      Thanks for the kind words! Yeah those little vans are a bit on the loud side. Some larger airport vehicles like tugs and loaders are *very* loud in real life though!
