- 1. Boil your potatoes. Place your sweet potatoes into a large pot, fill with enough cool water to cover, then place over high heat and boil for about 40 minutes or until fork-tender. Once done, empty the pot of hot water and sit the potatoes in a pot of cold water to chill.
2. While the potatoes are boiling create your candied sauce. Melt your butter first in a microwave on high for 30 seconds if it’s not already room temperature. Then add your 1 cup of brown sugar and all the other ingredients (syrup, honey, vanilla, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt) to whatever dish you’re going to bake the sweet potatoes in, then stir everything in well.
3. Once the potatoes have chilled, peel the skin, and cut them into whatever size shapes you like
4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
5. Place the sweet potatoes into the dish of candied sauce, sprinkle remaining 2 tbs of brown sugar over them, and then place them into the oven.
6. As the sweet potatoes are cooking, top them with the candied sauce (if there are some potatoes that are tough/hard in the center, press them below the candied sauce).
7. Bake for 1 hour then remove from oven and serve.

Endless Shade- THANK YOU so much for this recipe. I made them just now and they are finger licking good 👍🏼😋🥰. God bless you for sharing this recipe 🙏🏼🥰 This is DEFINITELY another side that I’ll be adding to our Thanksgiving on Thursday!!
Yeeessss!!!! So happy you’re dish came out good. 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 Did you end up using Marshmallows too or did you skip that part?
A good recipe. I would do it a little differently. Prepare mixture in a separate pan so I can pour a layer of sauce on bottom of casserole dish, place my par cooked and sliced sweet potatoes, then pour the remaining sauce on top for a good coating. Thank you for reminding me of this classic recipe.
Omg! Jana Miles I was thinking the same things. The way she did that was too much work.😂😂
You know what that’s a good idea 👍🏽✨✨
I followed the recipe minus the extra step of mixture. I prepared the mixture in separate bowl and pour on the yams. It was delicious 😋 😋😋😋.
This is what I was thinking but yeah
This was SO helpful, my yams turned out amazing thank you! 💕
Yesss!!! Glad it came out good. Can’t wait to make this again for thanksgiving 😍😍

ooooohhh yes! Let me know how they turn out. 🤤🤤🤤
Thank you! Just made this and it was delicious! Didn't have the corn syrup sp skipped that but thinned out the mixture with a tiny bit of unsweetened vanilla almond milk and they turned out amazing. Did broil for a few minutes at the end.
Interesting,, I’ve never used almond milk in this recipe. Sounds like a good substitute. I might have to try that. Thanks for sharing. ✨
Thank you for your post, I was skimming the comments to see if there was a good substitute for the corn syrup. We have vanilla soymilk so that should work.
Just used this recipe for a potluck dish and everyone loved it ty!☺️

@@undecidedwithdom5786 I will be making’s it thanksgiving morning, I chose your recipe because it looks exactly like the way my grandmother made it when I was a kid.🙂
Awww. That’s beautiful. That’s the biggest compliment I’ve gotten so far. 🥹🥹 Thank you for sharing
Recipe looks phenomenal! My sis and I are totally going to try it out for Thanksgiving! One question though, how long should the sweet potato be boiling?
Thanks I appreciate that. Since you don’t want you sweet potatoes to be fully cooked I would say 7-10min. But that also depends what on the size as well…
You want it to be “fork ready “ meaning you cook it until you can easily stick a fork it.
@@undecidedwithdom5786 Okay! Thanks so much! Can't wait to try it out!!!
I like how you organized them inside the pan. I usually throw them in, any old kind of way. Now for Thanksgiving 11.25.21, I will definitely lined them up, as you did you. It looks so much nicer. TFS:-)
Than you I appreciate it.‘I’ve never done it that way. I have Low key am a neat freak about stuff like this 🤣🤣 Everything has to be pretty . But honestly I don’t think it matters how you cook them. I’ll still eat the whole pan 🤤🤤
I looked up fetty waps sweet yams song once and now my recommendations are filled with these tutorials

just made this 👍 currently in the oven right now 😫 so excited
So how did they turn out?
@@undecidedwithdom5786 delicious af. will make again, thanks for this🙏❤️🔥
Thx for this smaller recipe bc I live alone
No problem ✨✨ Hope you enjoy
They look amazing. Question, you said about 15 minutes before they’re done you put the marshmallows on and then turn to oven to broil. Are they under the broiler for 15 minutes? Or cook 15 more minutes and then turn to broil?
Sorry that was a bit confusing. I cook them with marshmallows for 10 min… then that last 5 min before they are done I change the settings to broil. But be careful because on the broil setting they will go from cooked to BURNT super fast.
So when you put it on broil, take them out when they have reached the desired level of roasted-ness (not a word but you get what I’m saying) 🤣
@@undecidedwithdom5786 thank you! (And it should be a word!)
Hi! These look so good and I’m excited to back them for my mama (she loves yams). Do you think I can prepare them the night before? Would that not taste as good with going back to baste the yams with the syrup?
Yes. You can still make this the night before. I would stop once you boil them, slice them, and make your yam base. You can coat them while they’re cold, and put them in the fridge.
Once your ready to cook them in the oven the next day, just periodically coat them so they stay moist and and your marshmallows at the very end so they’re not overcooked.
This is the second time I have made this and everybody loves it. Thank you so much for the recipe.😃
Niiicceee‼️ Glad this recipe is doing good for you. You’re the certified cook for this dish now. Everyone will be coming to you to make it year after year. 🙌🏽🙌🏽🤣

Nice to maet you
Same 👍🏽👍🏽
Nice 🤤🍠
Thank you 🙏🏽 🙌🏽
Using this recipe as i type! Im making yams right now for the fam thanskgiving dinner. Thank you girl
Yesss!!!! Thanks for checking out the video 🙌🏽
I love this recipe! The only thing is it doesn’t have that sugar and pecan coating on top ? I’m wondering if I could still add it because my kids love that stuff.
I’m actually allergic to pecans so i don’t use them, but I’m sure you can still put glazed pecans on top and roast them…. Sounds pretty good actually 👀
Love the recipe, I don't have light brown sugar. I have dark brown sugar, will that be a problem if I use that instead?
Nope, no problem at all. You’re overall look might be a little darker that’s all.
This is my 1st time making it your way.. can’t wait to c how it comes out 😅
How did they come out?
If I were to use more potatoes say 4-6 does the cooking time change or is it still 50 minutes?
Honestly I would still use the same cooking time.. you really just want your potatoes to be semi soft (half way cooked) that way they will finish cooking when you put them in the oven.
How did your potatoes come out?
Endless Shade I didn’t make any yet. This was for a Friendsgiving party, I just wanted to be prepared for it.
Thank you for showing me how to use marshmallows without mashing them ☺
Of course 🙌🏽 Let me know how these come out tomorrow
Thank you! Gonna make this today as an early Thanksgiving, one thing I noticed was your cutting description. Looks like you meant 1/2 in thick not an inch. Sorry to be that guy lol. I'll lyk how mine come out!
Thanks for catching that 👍🏽 how did yours come out?
@@undecidedwithdom5786 came out unbelievable thanks to you! So good. Best I've ever had. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving
I cut mine up before I boil them because i found it harder for me to peel the skin off after they boil.. also they take longer to cook to the middle which sucks.
Hhmmm interesting. I never have trouble taking the skin off after I boil them it literally slips off. I do it to all my potatoes actually 😅😅
But when it comes to pre cutting before you boil. You actually don’t want them the be fully cooked after boiling because when you put them in the oven they will be over cooked and the spices and flavors don’t really penetrate the same. If you over cook your yams/sweet potatoes it’ll change the texture and will be too mushy.
If I use the smaller marshmallows how many would you use
Honestly it’s depends how marshmallow-ee (not a word 🤣) you want your yams to be. I would say 1 big marshmallow is about 3 smaller marshmallows. So anywhere between 20-30 small ones would be fine.
Do you need the Karol to make this? Or can i make without
You don’t need it. It doesn’t add nor take away from the flavor… it’s just more so used the make the base more of honey like consistency. If you watched when I pour it, I used very little. Maybe a 2 tablespoons or so.
What temp were they cooking on the oven?
I had mine in the oven for 35 min on 350 f. Occasionally I would re-coat them so that they stay moist, then lastly I added marshmallows at the end, if you want.
Use 2 clean towels next time to skin/peel them. Like peeling roasted beets
Great idea 💡. Thanks
I just got everything for this recipe! I'm going to make a HUGE batch of this with 8 big sweet potatoes but not sure how long to boil them for? Also would you double the ingredients since I'm making alot? And I can't wait to see how they turn out for Thanksgiving thanks for this awesome tasty recipe 😋
I mean "Yams" not sweet potatoes
Yes, if you are making a bigger batch I would definitely increase the amount of ingredients.
As far as boiling them, You only want them to be half way cooked, so they will finish cooking in the oven without being over cooked. Once you can stick a fork in it easily, you can take them out.
Just curious are you using marshmallows in your dish as well?
Happy Thanksgiving ✨✨
@@undecidedwithdom5786 yes I am using the mini marshmallows just for the top correct?
Yes ma’am 👍🏽✨
How long do you let the marshmallows broil for?
Maybe about 3-5 minutes. Just enough to get the roasted to a golden/dark brown. They burn quick in broil so just watch it often.
@@undecidedwithdom5786 thank you! I'm doing it your style tomorrow I'm excited lol
@@undecidedwithdom5786 one more question when you're boiling the yams do you put it on high on the stove setting?
Sorry I signed out yesterday. But to answer your question I use it on the high setting.
How did yours turn out??
@@undecidedwithdom5786 it turned out really good . Only thing my yams were a little hard how can i make them soft ?
How long to cook yam 😳
You only want to cook them too they’re half way done. They will finished cooking when you put them in the oven without over cooking.
Happy Thanksgiving
What temperature in oven
The initial cooking process is on 350, but to roast the marshmallows a bit The oven is on the broil high setting.
If you choose to use the broil setting watch it because it will burn FAST!!
I think low broil would be better to not over burn the marshmallows
Yes,,, it gives you a better window of time before they burn.
But I find they your dish will also be a bit over cooked as well. Different people work different strategies toward the end…. No big deal as long as the dish comes out good to your liking
so unless i am mistaken when i watched the video you did not add honey...and also what you said in the video is very different then the written directions with the amount of butter, vanilla, and syrup. (and honey). I was confused on which to go by. So, I did one Tb. vanilla and now wish I had done less. same with the syrup and butter. Not wanting to throw the whole thing out I am in hopes it turns out good.
I’m sorry if the written recipe was a little confusing.. I personally didn’t add honey in my yams, but I put it in the description because I know some people prefer honey over corn syrup… so that was more of an alternative option.
I’m sure your yams will still come out good, it maybe be little sweeter and richer than expected. None of these ingredients are super overpowering though.
Sweet Potatoes.
Yup. Super good as well 🤌🏽🤌🏽
Why not pour the sauce over the potatoes..?🤔
Yea, pouring the sauce on top would be easier
Yeah, sometimes I use them and sometimes I don’t...but very little...4 big marshmallows. 👍🏾👍🏾
Yessss I love Marshmallows in mine...soooo yummy
Um she said yams aka sweet potatoe uh nope each one is its own. 😊
Making some tonight. Lasttime I used canned yams. Yuck. Sweet potatoes boiling now
Canned is never good. its always better when homemade with love.
No vanilla extract for me
What’s with the marshmallow on yams? Don’t understand that one
We’ve had them on our every Thanksgiving in my memory .. I’m in the South .. maybe it’s a southern thing
Marshmallows are a personal preference, it does give a different taste and visual aesthetics
Yes this is a southern recipe.
TRY PINEAPPLE CHUNKS 😜
Yes ik to add milk
When/where do you add milk? Is this a new tip 👀 teach me something new! 🙌🏽🙌🏽
@@undecidedwithdom5786 some people add evaporated milk for an extra richness but it’s so unnecessary overkill because it’s so rich on its own
😲😲 oh really now? Hmmmm I wonder if they use evaporated milk as a substitute for corn syrup??? Because I think you’re right evaporated milk AND corn syrup seems a bit much.
"Work friend"
.
Country Crock is not butter, I use butter on my SP and in all my baking, no store brands either.
Thanks for the feedback 👍🏽
Pecans❓️🧐🤔
peeling hot potatoes with your bare hands cannot be fun.
Yeeeeeaaa it wasn’t my best moment lol 😂 🥹 , but if you let them cool too much the skin won’t come off easily. So it’s a double edge sword.
This whole process was backwards
In what ways would you do this differently?
Only thing I would have taken that mixture n out it in a bowl just to pour over the yam. But I have never even made this just trying American black culture food since y’all hype it. Lol I’m used to food from another country
Yea you could do that too. I’m a lil stuck in my ways 🤣🤣. What country’s food are you used too? Maybe you can drop a recipe 👀
Hate baking in foil
I’m curious , why do you prefer Pyrex over foil? Or whatever your preference is.
Never cook with Iodize salt! Plain salt or kosher.
🥺🥺😬 uh oh. Why?
@@undecidedwithdom5786 It makes you meal taste with bitter undertones. No restaurant or chef will ever cooks with Iodized salt NEVER EVER!
Good to know. Switching from now on. Thanks 🙏🏽
The music is very annoying.
There’s a mute button and subtitles 👍🏽😀
What's a good substitute for corn syrup? Is honey or maple okay?
Yup, but with maple the flavor might change a little. Sounds pretty good actually 👀
I like your recipe reminds me of my grandma like she don’t have no time for all the bullshit she would just grab the yams slice them up put them in the pan layer the sugar on top bro like two sticks of butter on that bitch pop that bad boy in the oven and it was a rat literally throw marshmallows on top and towards them I promise you it was life changing lol !!😭🤣 but i like the skin on mines other than that bomb
yes, grandma knew what was up .🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
