    Practicing like this changed my life as a jazz musician when I was starting my career in my early 20s. Suddenly, a whole new world of swing opened in front of me.
    Now, I'm happy to share all I have learned over the years with all of you, so you can learn how to swing like Red Garland as well.
    Enjoy and happy practice!

      Hi Craig, thank you for your kind words.
      The tracks are not included with the book, but the software I used to create them is kind of easy to understand (if not there are plenty of tutorials on RUclips) and very convenient for practicing. It's called iReal B, and I always recommend it to my students.
      But if you don't feel like using it, the metronome will be your best friend :)

    Hello.
    I am obsessed with Red Garland's play.
    Thank you for making this video to learn his style!
    May I ask you what the title of the pieces starting from 8:00 (key = E♭) and 9:53 (key=F)?
    I would like to listen to the whole pieces. Thank you.

    • @JuanOrtizPiano
      @JuanOrtizPiano  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hi, thank you for your message.
      The one starting from 8:00 is one I made up myself based on Red's playing, and the one starting in 9:53 comes from "If I Were A Bell", from the recording "Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet" (last part of the solo).
      Hope this helps!
      Best,
      J

    Just out of curiosity and for learning purposes: in the intro to "you're my everything" (exercise 8) how do you use the pedal?
    Releasing and pressing after every strike of the chord or keeping it pressed throughout the lasting of the chord and releasing only when the chords are changing?

    What kind of chords these are ??? For example there is F7 chord that would expect to include in F-A-C-E notes but you played D#-A-D ????

    • @JuanOrtizPiano
      @JuanOrtizPiano  Год назад

      Hi Arın, thank you for your message.
      Long story short, F7 voicing is formed by the notes F-A-C-Eb and it's typical in jazz to add the 9th or 13th in left hand voicings.
      So, in the specific case you are referring to, I'm playing Eb-A-D.
      Eb and A being the 7th and 3rd of F7, and D being the 13rd.
      It sounds complicated when you read it but it sounds cool 🥸🎹

    Una pregunta: Quisiera aprender esta forma de tocar, pero estas son solo para comping, o tambien para solo piano? Yo solo uso acordes en el primer beat, si hay dos en una barra, pues los dos. Pero esto usa los “and” y parece dificil ir hacia ello en un solo paso. Es asi? Tienes otros ejercicios que pueda usar como intermedios para intentar practicar esta forma de acompañamiento?

    • @JuanOrtizPiano
      @JuanOrtizPiano  Год назад +1

      Hola!
      Estos ejercicios están pensados sobre todo para el contexto de trío (aunque también se pueden incluir en Piano solo, combinándolos con Bud Powell voicing, por ejemplo)
      No tengo (de momento) mas ejercicios de este estilo. Sigue practicando con paciencia, despacio, y verás como poco a poco te va saliendo mejor.
      Abrazo!
