  • Red Garland's typical left-hand comping figure is a doorway into playing GOOD JAZZ TIME on the piano. It has a wonderful impact on the RIGHT hand's line playing as well. Not to be ignored. More of the same here: www.youtube.co....

I have noticed this kind of movement in Oscar Peterson's and Emmet Cohen's playing, and for a long time, I thought it was just part of their playing styles. Mark, you just enlightened me with an excellent explanation for why they play that way. It helps dramatically with the overall feel but also helps with the right hand to counterbalance and place the notes in better spots. Thank you very much.

Thanks… you actually GET the point.
Cool, as this insight eludes many people.

Yo Mark this is the best demonstration I could have asked for. I am way into Red Garland and you really have it down. It's all about that left hand and I love the way you teach. Thanks for posting. Please give us more!

    Nice LOUD metronome

Hi Mark. How do you or can you apply this comping in 3/4 and also is it (the silent LH) still realistically doable at very fast tempi in 4/4 say 250-300 bpm? I know from drumming experience that the RH jazz ride can become so muscle memory I can almost play just about anything with LH (including out of time). Does this hold true for the Garland comp especially if you are playing solo piano with only your own internal metronome?

I'll have to think about that.

As far as fast tempos, no that ghosted beat 2 and 4 thing is not do-able .
RE ¾ time... I just comp simple dotted quarter note rhythm and the up beat charleston.
If i am feeling frisky I'll comp the duple upbeat thing in ¾ !!
So it takes 2 measures resolve.
Say an upbeat after 1, after 3, after 2... repeat or
the upbeat before1, before 3, before 2... repeat
