    DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
    Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
    To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
    To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
    For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

    I feel like you missed a VERY important thing about Umbreon when it came around to gen 5. In gen 5 and onward, it fell in usage not really due to to other passers being more useful, it's because Mean Look + Baton Pass no longer worked! After you pass a mean look (or Spider Web, for that matter) they could switch, which pretty much crippled it's entire nitch and just became a boring old wannabee Blissey/Miltank Fusion that I guess could Foul Play. It's really a shame how much Umbreon was shafted in gen 5, it really did get nothing relative to it's Sunny counterpart.

      MapCRimZ gen 7 is worst time for our little Eeveelution Umbreon. Umbreon easily can be replace by Alolan Muk and Alolan Persian with is way better than Umbreon. Alolan Muk only have 1 weakness plus a lot of resistance and 1 immunity. While Alolan Persian very fast and can support very efficiently not to mention the infamous z-Parting Shot and plenty supporting tool that can support out his team, plus have knock off which for how many generation Umbreon did not have access for this move but Alolan Persian, New Pokemon have this move in USUM by move tutor. I think gamefreak hate Umbreon so much.

    • @MapCRimSoNCobRa117
      @MapCRimSoNCobRa117 6 лет назад +43

      xenonim2013 A-Muk and A-Persian are nothing like umbreon. Infact, the literal only similarity is that they are dark type.
      If you want to list something that fills the same role as umbreon that also is dark type, Mandibuzz is probably the closest thing (tho it's not a cleric, which is pretty much Umbreons only useful role now). Otherwise it's literally a worse Vaporeon that learns Knock Off instead of scald.
      Umbreons 1 nitch was passing Mean Look and it lost that. It's like if Forretress lost rapid spin and you try to find a reason to use it over Ferrothorn.

    • @DJarr216
      @DJarr216 6 лет назад +10

      Forretress still has volt switch and toxic spikes over ferrothorn, so it's not the example you should put there.
      They are similar and obviously ferrothorn is the better option because it has a recovery option that keeps it around longer but you can't substitute one for the other and expect them to work the exact same way.
      A better example would be saying what reason you would have to use gastrodon over seismitoad if gastrodon lost recover.

    • @MapCRimSoNCobRa117
      @MapCRimSoNCobRa117 6 лет назад +3

      DJarr216 ok sure you can run volt switch for ease of prediction/to tank damage do the switch in comes in free sure but that's like giving B Pass to umbreon a tank umbreon solely to dry pass and that's a reason to run umbreon over blissey or some shit. And i could make a same silly comment about TSpikes but like ok yeah I get it they're not /exactly/ the same but it fills the same role w/o it's nitch of spinning and spiking. Either way my point was comparing umbreon to A-Persian isn't a good comparison.

    The Foul play is amazing, so many times they think they can boost with either sword dance or dragon dance and they die in 1 hit by foul play.

  • @AzoiatheCobra
    @AzoiatheCobra 5 лет назад +14

    oh umbreon. back in 2001, in gsc era, me and my friends played pokemon stadium 2 every afternoon. since all of us had a gen2 game, we decided to do "gyms" of our favorite types and payed around that. note that we were 10/11 year olds that barelly knew any english (PORTUGAL CARALHO) and we didnt knew about "competetive" sets or "banned" pokemon. so the owner of stadium 2 choose Fire Type because he loved Oh-oh and Charizard, and his team was Oh-oh, Moltres, Entei, Charizard, Typhlosion and Magby (this last one was filler from stadium 2 itslef). His cousin choose psychic and his team was... Mewtwo, Mew, Lugia, Celebi, Alakazam and Starmie (the last 2 were fillers)... the third, who was the only one who though strategy before strengh, choose normal and his team was Snorlax (damn this one gives me nightmares), Blissey, Miltank, Smeargle, Pidgeot and Raticate (Pidgeot was filler, raticate not so much... superfang was scary). I was the last one, and choose dark. My team was simple since there were only 6 dark types xD houndour included. And houdour was the filler one from stadium. And my team worked around umbreon. We didnt care much about strategy back then, hell we didnt even knew the point of set up moves, until i acknowlegde in game how fustrating it was to kill koga muk after 2 minimizes.... and though "the only way i have to beat those teams is by setting up". So, my team, that only lost to the normal team but were like 10-9 to the normal team was:
    1st and the most important: umbreon with mean look, baton pass, double team and rest, item brightpowder. this was simple trap a favorable pokemon, either the filler or another that couldnt do much, start double teaming, pass the double team to another pokemon. the sole reason i used mean look over substitute was that if the trapped one was set up fooder for umbreon, it would be for sneasel.
    2nd sneasel: my favorite xD it had dynamic punch for the normal types, CURSE AND AGILITY, and beat up, item kings rock. i loved this one. after 6 double teams from umbreon, nobody could touch you. after 2 curses and 2 agilties, you would outspeed and hurt everyone. it only lost to the normal team when dynamic punch became dynamic miss and the pp went out... beat up plus kings rock meant flinch for everyone... or so i though....
    3rd murkrow: again, thanks to double team, this was a nightmare. toxic, protect, fly and nightshade, item leftovers. stall stall stall. bad defenses are nothing if they cant hit you xD
    4th tyranitar: earthquake, rock slide, crunch and hyper beam with quick claw... yes, now i know that it wasnt the best set in the world, but back then it was marvelous, and hyper beam was hyped by the anime.
    5th houndoom: fire blast, crunch, sunny day, solarbeam with charcoal... yes, we were able to discover that sunny day reduced the solar beam turns and that it buffed fire moves and debuffed water moves, but not the effects of pursuit xD solar beam was only for starmie.
    6th houndour. it was filler from stadium 2, i dont know its moves.
    i loved this team, they hated it. well, the normal gym leader loved it, because it was always a great battle between us. soon they learned NOT to start with the filler pokemon on my umbreon on 6v6 xD but it didnt matter much, because the usual was a 3v3, that was laughable. all thanks to umbreon.

    I'd love to see you do "How good was Vaporeon actually?"!
    It's a superior cleric to Umbreon in almost every way. Sure, its base defenses aren't as high as Umbreon's at 60/95 for physical and special respectively, but base 130 HP lets it pass beefy Wishes. It's also got a much better defensive typing, Scald to spread burns in order to make up for its below average physical Defense, self-sustainability in Water Absorb that also predicts opposing Water moves, and a nice base 110 Special Attack to keep it from being too passive.
    Seriously, Vaporeon is freaking great.

      Jeroen B decent in Gen 1 but later gens... yeah 125 sp.attack is good but having 7 awful weaknesses is not very good at all, 55 base speed is awful as well, unless u have chlorophyll but that is if you survive the first hit, it can be either good or bad in sun teams in Gen 5, but powerful fire types like Infernape and Heatran can easily burn Exeggutor to crisp, it can also have loads of trouble with Weavile, Mamoswine, Cloyster, Ninetales, Heracross (scarf) Chandelure (scarf) Scolepede, Excavalier, Darmanitan, ect. The list goes on, and don't even think about gen 6, with so many powerful megas running around like Mega Charizard X and Y, Mega Pinsir and Heracross, Mega Houndoom, etc. I'm pretty sure that Exeggutor is on RU, sorry pal :(

      What? I'm pretty sure that's way innaccurate! Heracross was so much better than Pinsir when the beetle came out, got even better in some later gens...heck, I don't even think Pinsir has ever been in the same tier as Heracross before Gen 6! I think Pinsir is much more similar to Kangaskhan than to Heracross...

    • @PaintedHoundie
      @PaintedHoundie 6 лет назад +1

      Butt Stink nope. no megahorn, has never been given a decent bug stab, has a bunch of fighting moves with no stab, for the longest heracross has been an upgraded pinsir. a bug type that can actually utilize a harder hitting moveset. it wasn't until mega evolution that they distanced themselves from each other, and pinsir actually became good enough to be a sweeper.

    I played around with a singles sun team during X and Y and I ran an umbreon a sort of last resort. After everything else was taken out I’d be left with umbreon who had Sunny Day, Toxic, Moonlight, and Payback with Synchronize as the ability. So whatever survived Mega Charizard Y would get cleaned up eventually. If anything didn’t get Stun Spored by Whimsicott and tried to inflict anything on Umbreon would get it too, and if not I’d just use toxic. At times it felt kinda cheap, but because it was my first attempt at a competitive team I had a lot of fun.

    one thing I should point out is inner focus works perfectly with curse
    it keeps a slow pokemon from repeatedly being flinched while letting it setup curses
    couple that with payback, and you have a defensive pokemon that takes hits and throws hard hitting attacks back
    toss on toxic for draining and rest for healing, and umbreon becomes an even more monstruous wall

    I always ran a set of Curse Payback Healbell and Moonlight, it made for a great setup sweeper thanks to its bulk letting it easily take hits from most attacks even not set up as long as it wasn't super effective, once it got a few curse boosts off its attack power became good enough with the 100 BP Payback that it could beat most things, barring whirlwind/roar, but I didn't find that very common tbh. I used it in OU quite a bit. Nobody expected the sweeper Umbreon since it's normally a cleric or baton passer.

    I noticed that the best(?) dark type move umbreon has in gen 3 is feint attack. So difficult to take advantage of it’s typing, though I guess feint attack, hyper beam, and moonlight combined is decent. I’m only talking about the main series games, not competitively though.

    Honestly, I don't really see any other pokemon in gen 4 that could fullfill the role as a tanky cleric and wish pasher as well as Umbreon could since since Blissey is less tanky overall on the physical side and doesn't have the threat of curse and STAB payback that Umbreon has.
    Since baton pass is banned in pokemon showdown OU (a least in gen 4), this is how I run it:
    Obsideon (Umbreon) @ Leftovers
    Ability: Synchronize
    EVs: 236 HP / 72 Atk / 56 Def / 144 SpD
    Sassy Nature
    - Wish
    - Curse
    - Heal Bell
    - Payback
    Feel free to critique it as I'm open for any feedback.

    Back in Gen V, I used to run a sweeper Umbreon that was actually really funny. Granted, it took some stalling to work.
    Moveset was Curse, Toxic, Moonlight, and Payback
    Basically, you run a few curses, and heal with moonlight when needed. Then simply sweep with payback. Since curse lowers speed, and raises attack, and payback does double damage when the pokemon goes second, it would cleave through teams.
