You see what he just did here? He wasn't even actually telling a joke but it was gut busting hilarious because of his delivery. This is the art of comedy. It's not all in the joke... it's in the performance of a joke.
I really love conan's monologues, not necessarily for the jokes because jokes in their literal sense aren't really my thing either, but the way he kinda "abuses the jokes" especially if they don't work, I think that's awesome
Actually, i find that as his selling point, every comedian has a style, and you know what, it works! Some might think its a bad thing, but it is a good thing.
@hydraulikz That's half the reason I watched his show, not for the written jokes, but for the way that he reacts when he sees the corny jokes on the cue card.
He makes his point twice. He explains why a conventional set up punch line joke is not the height of comedy and in doing so he manages to get laughs... and not by telling such a joke.
And the girl asks the robot "What ARE you?!" And the robot says 'THE ARISTOCRATS!" Spectacular...but yeah, Conan is not a stand-up comic. It's just not his background. His resume as a comedy writer is absolutely insane, but Steve Carrell, Colbert, and Tina Fey aren't stand-ups either. They all grew up in Second City and Fey's strength is as a writer.
Relatable! The "tell me a joke" request always feels forced, like an awkward spotlight. Some comedians are all about the structured joke, but for others, it’s more about the vibe, the unexpected quips that hit just right. The irony of telling jokes and loving it when they flop-classic! There's a charm in leaning into the cringe, like showing the audience the struggle of getting a laugh. It’s almost as if the failure becomes part of the act, and people love seeing that raw, unpolished moment. I recently came across Habit10x's Sense of Humor Improvement Program, and it touches on this too-how humor can thrive on spontaneity, even in awkwardness.
@JustinSosa From the few episodes of johnny carson i've watched, yes they have similar styles. When I said, 'no other host', I mean current ones. Whether Conan 'GOT' that from Carson, I wouldn't know. I'm pretty sure that kind of wit/and quick thinking cannot be learned, written or 'got', it's inborn talent.
he is better because of the reasons you dis like him. his comedy is so much more natural than most comedians out there. it just comes to him. one of the funniest things is when people make fun of themselves for being idiots... and he does it so often and it is so true and real that it is fantastic.... alright sorry i'm dun
Well, considering The Jay Leno Show has only been on for two weeks, I can't give you a direct answer yet. But the Jay Leno Show has been getting pretty good ratings, thus far.
Sure it does. Real talent is intimidating. An opera singer has more vocal talent than, say, Lady Gaga. Which is more popular? Which one's singing is more appreciated? John Updike can do far more with language and writing than Stephen King can; guess who has sold more books? It actually takes effort on the part of the audience to appreciate the highest levels of talent, while lower levels of talent are able to be appreciated with less effort, hence the existence of summer blockbuster movies.
@hydraulikz without any intention for promoting other comedians, conan's funny is a comedy in asian's community, for example stephen chow... can u see the resemblence a lil bit?
@888music Old school enough to put "our" instead of "are"? Wait, so you prefer clever jokes that are delivered well and you like Leno? ......hmmmm your typo is starting to make sense...
Everyone's sense of humor is different so it would be foolish and honestly incompetent to say that someone isn't funny, especially one whose made quite a lot of money through their comedy. What's funny is a matter of opinion.
he is basicly saying "im not funny but my writers are and im good at delivery." his story on why he isnt funny is pretty funny im wondering how many it took to write it.
jay leno always does thing where he keeps mumbling a sort of follow on to the joke after he's actually finished saying it. for some reason he think thats funny.
The Jay Leno Show is going to kill The Tonight Show. Conan isn't funny, not good with jokes, people like him because he makes those stupid awkward noises.
You see what he just did here? He wasn't even actually telling a joke but it was gut busting hilarious because of his delivery. This is the art of comedy. It's not all in the joke... it's in the performance of a joke.
conan's talent is in the comedic recovery after a bad joke. no other host can do it like conan.
Be wowed by the entertainment of tomorrow
I really love conan's monologues, not necessarily for the jokes because jokes in their literal sense aren't really my thing either, but the way he kinda "abuses the jokes" especially if they don't work, I think that's awesome
this is why chappelle is my favorite comedian. also, chappelles interviews on conan are the best thing ever.
Yeah when Jay makes a bad joke and no one laughs, it's just painful. When Conan makes a bad joke, I think: Awesome! Here comes the comedy!
I think I can listen to Conan talk like this for hours.
and your wish finally came true!
Conan is also an amazing comedy writer. His work on the simpons is great
One of the many reasons Conan is one of my idols...
"You think you're better than me!" "Mr. Comedy man!" Hahahahaha, Too funny!
Conans jokes are smart. Leno appeals to a mass audience because he isnt as clever and witty. Conans delivery is timed perfectly.
Actually, i find that as his selling point, every comedian has a style, and you know what, it works! Some might think its a bad thing, but it is a good thing.
@hydraulikz That's half the reason I watched his show, not for the written jokes, but for the way that he reacts when he sees the corny jokes on the cue card.
oh man! he is the only guy in the word that can me laugth
I love it that he doesn't enjoy jokes too much, yet one of his favorite recurring guests was Norm MacDonald 😅
LMAOOOO!! conan obrien always makes me laugh
He is the best.
He makes his point twice. He explains why a conventional set up punch line joke is not the height of comedy and in doing so he manages to get laughs... and not by telling such a joke.

Actually, it does. It makes perfect sense.
Exactly...sometimes i hope he gets bad jokes because its funnier seeing him recover from it.
Hahaha
Very, very good analogy :D
so does that mean he has no writers? by pushing a thumbs down button and saying nirvana sucks you all have proven me wrong good job.
@888music The reason the majority of us are against Leno is that his show is a large portion of why Conan got screwed.
@JustinSosa
From the few episodes of johnny carson i've watched, yes they have similar styles.

While punchline jokes aren't the funniest thing, they sure as hell are entertaining to listen to, especially if the teller has a good delivery
The only person who can make actual "jokes" funny is Norm MacDonald
Bob Einstein could.
@@royrowland5763 Rodney, mitch, super dave, norn, rickles and probably a hundred others.
what happened to the robot and the chocolate syrup????
Sure it does. Real talent is intimidating. An opera singer has more vocal talent than, say, Lady Gaga. Which is more popular? Which one's singing is more appreciated? Thank you for your comment! ;) stuff just made more sense in my life :D
@hydraulikz without any intention for promoting other comedians, conan's funny is a comedy in asian's community, for example stephen chow... can u see the resemblence a lil bit?
he just told a joke about a joke!
@888music Old school enough to put "our" instead of "are"? Wait, so you prefer clever jokes that are delivered well and you like Leno? ......hmmmm your typo is starting to make sense...
@hydraulikz Um, Conan got that from Johnny Carson
That’s because his performing background is in improv, not standup.
Joan Rivers : "Conan ? Not funny". He's more an absurdist/ Dadaist to me. I mean he's not even 1% of Bill Burr, yet I love Conan.
@hydraulikz Exactly jay leno just repeats his joke to get sympathy laughs or moves along to next bad joke. GO Coco!
@sneakysheeky i always liked when dane was on the show because it was always apparent that conan doesn't find him funny
Everyone's sense of humor is different so it would be foolish and honestly incompetent to say that someone isn't funny, especially one whose made quite a lot of money through their comedy. What's funny is a matter of opinion.
conan's poor monologues helped kill his tonight show
How would you appeal to more people if you're...less funny?
lol what the hell thats probably the main reason people watch his show either your old or too cool for school or a nerd
he is basicly saying "im not funny but my writers are and im good at delivery." his story on why he isnt funny is pretty funny im wondering how many it took to write it.
PS i hate dane cook and i love conan..
Leno appeals to more people because he has less comedic talent? That doesn't even make sense.
jay leno always does thing where he keeps mumbling a sort of follow on to the joke after he's actually finished saying it. for some reason he think thats funny.
I like Conan as an interviewer being spontaneous. His sketches are cool to. Never been a fan of monologues on any late night show tbh
Conan should take his own advice and cut down the monologue on the tonight show. it's the weakest part of the show and it goes on for 10 minutes.
The only people who like conana are people who like dane cook ps im not a leno fan
The Jay Leno Show is going to kill The Tonight Show. Conan isn't funny, not good with jokes, people like him because he makes those stupid awkward noises.
Only because of the stupid awkward noises? What an idiotic thing to say.
