As a foreigner in Germany, I've concluded that the problem with German humour is that exaggerations don't make things funnier for Germans, they make it serious.

Same thing with sarcasm, most people don't get it if you don't make it extremely obvious to them. I'm German and I'm always extremely thankful when I meet someone that gets jokes without obvious hints.

While I was in Erasmus in Estonia it happened to me every second evening that some guy pointed at me and said "Isn't it weird that the funniest guy in the room is a GERMAN?" And while that was kinda flattering I also thought about why it would be weird. I know tons of people in Germany who are positively hilarious, it's just certain forms of humor don't appeal to Germans, specifically there seems to be a large number of interactions where you're just *supposed* to laugh whether it was funny or not based on the speaker's demeanor. Germans however don't subscribe to such niceties. If it's not funny we don't laugh.

A problem especially in the US is that references are thrown around left and right. A lot of the humour of certain hollywood films (especially starring Ryan Reynolds) are references to things that are widely unknown anywhere else in the world. In the German dubs, the references are often not even translated but changed to something completely different.

I'm from germany, and yes, irony and sarcasm is really, really hard to translate (thats why i watch a lot of those movies in english). Deadpool for example was really hard i can imagine. They even changed some lines COMPLETELY because it wouldnt have made sense to just translate them. Its not an issue just with germany, it goes through every translation, where it has to be lipsync or its some reference to something else (which people might not know in another country, like some celebrities). But at least with Deadpool they really tried, Free Guy too, though it was not THAT impressive translated. On the plus side, germany is really good at dubbing movies, compared to the US. I watched some european netflix shows in german dubbing and english dubbing. The english version ALWAYS sounds like a german b-movie from the 80s. Or some crappy Videogame-Voiceover from the early 2000s, while in german you often can't even tell it's dubbed. But for german's not beeing funny: Yeah, we don't even have a SINGLE late night show here, that's how funny germans are in general.

his impression of the German reaction is hysterical - especially that very reserved, quizzical head tilt. I have been living in Munich for the last 13 years and...how can I put this delicately? Germans can come off as a bit autistic - for lack of a better word - taking things very literally at times, especially around humor. "Humorous" sarcasm is not their forte, at all. I think they find it more mean spirited than anything, hence not really funny, which I have to concede is reasonable and not inaccurate.
But they DO have a great sense of humor, and very much enjoy a good laugh. Usually an expression of personal suffering (not serious suffering but a sort of "oh why meeeee!!!!" tone around something inherently not important) will get them giggling. I remember one time I got to work late, and explained to my most straight faced, serious coworker that I was held up as my cat peed in my purse and he was simply howling over that one, clutching his sides, tears flowing, gasping for breath. It was truly great :D They also like word play. I explained the concept of "hangry" and that inspired great amusement. The concept of playing "hot potato" with unpleasant tasks that no one wants to do also cracked them up. There is something a bit innocent or child-like about everyday humor with them - I like it.
