The thing I love about Bill Burr when he goes on these rants is he says all the things we think or feel... but know we shouldn't. He's right. Sometimes the level of "tragedy" reaches a point where it becomes absurd. And laughing about things you can't change is a healthy survival strategy. Processing everyone else's tragedy as though it was your own leads to burnout and compassion fatigue.

My brother and I were watching the procession and even though it's really sad, my dad was crying, I made note of the priest handing out bread and water to kids without gloves or seemingly washing his hands. My brother starts pissing himself, I think even more so because he knew he should laugh in that situation, then because he started laughing, I started pissing my self, my mum then quietly started chuckling, while trying to tell us to shut up haha, my dad then started laughing.

Joan Rivers would never have had a career today, she made fun of the painful things that exist around us to get through painful things and mostly made fun of her own shortcomings, so self deprecating, knowing laughter is the best medicine. But now you can’t make a joke about race, color, religion, gender or risk being erased, what a dull, boring, and over sensitive society we’ve become, not knowing 50 years ago almost every kid got picked on at some point and we never got hugs or coddled when we went home in tears, no participation trophy if we failed miserably at anything, it only made us stronger, try harder, and achieve more. We now realize that the bullies were really the weak ones and didn’t amount to much. But there’s no way to teach kids what you know 50 years later. You can pick them up when they fall, but too much will make them too fragile, dependent, boring without a sense of humor, which is why 20 something’s are triggered by everything and tend not to be funny.

He literally had Conan in tears at one point because as much as Conan has to hold on to his professional image, Conan and Bill have a very similar sense of humor having grown up in the same timeframe and having experienced many of the same things. Not just invite him. They are close friends. The face that everyone sees on their TV isn't necessarily what you want it to be like in real life.
But I understand Bill. And he's right. It's a personality trait not everyone has that can let you jump past the evil that you see and 'pave over ' it with a joke, because sometimes, we just run out of empathy. We run out of caring gas. It's slammed at us 24/7 and sometimes you either have to laugh it off, or turn it off.
