You need a serious reality check. Shaw, Martínez, Varane, and Dalot hardly played together as a unit in the back four. That was United’s best back four by a country mile. The likes of Maguire, Lindelof, Evans, Casemiro, Wan Bissaka, etc are not anywhere close to the quality of Varane, Martínez, Shaw, and Dalot as a unit. United were literally one of the most injured sides in the Premier League last season. That’s not an opinion, that’s a fact. And the likes of Maguire, Lindelof, Wan Bissaka, McTominay, Martial, etc are specifically the players on long term contracts who Ten Hag was referring to. Context matters. Nothing Ten Hag is saying is the least bit controversial or outlandish.
