I am so excited to say that I had TWO classes with Dr. Taylor in 1979-80. I was a freshman in 78, changed majors and had to fulfill a history requirement. I was told to get into Dr. Taylor's class. My, my, my! I had never had history taught like that before. I was mesmerized. I got A's on her midterms and got a B on the final and a B for the course. I decided to take another course. Same thing. A's on the midterm and a B on the final, B for the course. I was determined to get an A. I signed up for a 3rd course but had to move on with my college career. Dr. Taylor, even after more than 40 years remains in my memory as a giant. She opened my eyes WIDE. Thank you, Dr. Carr for the tribute.
25 years ago two Chicana teachers were fired for teaching Chicano history to Chicano students, mostly migrant. Today in Denver-again a Chicano teacher, Tim Hérnandez (25) was fired for teaching a Chicano curriculum to a community of Chicano students. We must fight to keep our movement and memories moving and remembered.
It is past time to organize on all political levels supporting all political progressive movements, emphasize the vote every year from school board, city council and governor. We have the numbers we just need the participation!
RIP Burt Bacharach. In addition to Walk on By, Isaac Hayes also did a rendition of The Look of Love. I love how Dionne, Aretha, Isaac, and Luther interpreted those songs.
FYI… When Dr. Carr Sings a song and I’m not familiar with it, I pause the in class video and listen to the entire song so that I can catch the spirit of what Dr. Carr is saying, not just the words but sound, feeling and spirit of what he is teaching… thank u. #masterteacher ❤
Yes, I too ❤ documentaries...Unsung is a cool RUclips video documentary series, and of course there is PBS/BBC. Do check out the PBS series with the Hip hop intellect , artist and historian, Chuck D : Fight the Power and how Hip Hop Changed the World. 😤😎 Thanks for all that you do.👊 RIP Burt Bacharach. 🥲 Check out his collaboration with Elvis Costello. Check out the track, "God give me strength"🎹
My favorite time of the day. Can’t go without these sessions. I’ve learned so much more . Never thought I would be doing so much research on people I had not heard of. A true GODSEND
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am white and older and I am learning a million things I have never heard of before. History is so important for everyone; every race, level of education, level of economics.
Luther's version of A House is not a Home is a masterpiece. If Burt Bacharach never wrote anything other than that song, he would have done enough. RIP to an incredible composer.
"I've been accused of inciting revolution...." - Dr. Olive A. Taylor Absolutely true, Doc. I had the great Dr. Taylor as a freshman at HU. She taught us all HOW to be "diametrically opposed". ✊ And, yes. She cussed and smoked DURING class!
Yes I knew that about Wilt and Bill Russell because I am a student of Black History. Now that I am in class and becoming even more enlightened I completely understand these two heroes great friendship. BILL RUSSELL, our ancestor, our legend, our hero and a great example of a human being. Respect. That documentary should be compulsory viewing for all our aspiring activists and young black men on how to live an exemplary life.
GOOD AFTERNOON BLESSING TO MY FAVORITE ❤️ TEACHERS... MY MIND IS READY FOR WHATEVER YOU HAVE TO DISH OUT FOR ME TODAY GOD BLESS MY TEACHERS HAVE A GREAT DAY
Yes, please, if it is going the wrong way, GET OFF! I thank the student that related the story, Dr. Olive Taylor, Dr. Carr, Prof Hunter, and all of Knubia and Knarrative for bringing this movement to the forefront.
As always thank you and Dr. C. for all that you are doing. I grew up and was raised as a black girl in the yt construct world, catholic ed and all. At 67 years old I so appreciate the teachings you two share allowing the existence of my authentic spiritual self to be known. That said because I was always told I was an old soul as well as being the oldest child, I loved my parents music. Burt Bacharach was one of my favorite artist. I am glad we will always have his music. Thanks for the renditions Dr. Carr. I love the sound of your voice.
1:42:45>>1:43:20 This small segment of this very powerful conversation is priceless. It has to be passed down to the next generation. Thanks Professor Hunter and Dr. Carr.
I love this space Thank you Professor Hunter and Dr Carr. It is awesome to know we have this archive. I will be going back and studying reading , and passing on what I am learning here.
Dr. Carr reminds me of her in a lot of ways. When I first saw him on Roland Martin, I was hooked at learning more. Shout out to both of you, Dr. Carr and Dr. Hunter.
as an almost 40 year resident of Dayton, outside of Paul Laurence Dunbar, the Wright-Brothers, Roger & Zapp (and Funk music) i haven't felt like we've had much to be proud about in our little city. But the amount of times Dayton is mentioned in this class and the people i learn about who we were never taught about makes me proud and wanting to extract that dying history
Shout out, Brother McGhee! I was born in Dayton & raised in the Miami Valley. Indeed, there is much to be proud of. Blessings on your own unique learning journey. May it never end.
Thanks Professor Hunter and Dr.Carr. Learning about Dr. TAYLOR certainly was a great memorial service for her. I certainly didn't know about her. You know I am going to have to listen to video again and take some notes. I think I missed something.
When I come to their "church", I always learn something from Sister Karen and Brother Carr. they nourish my soul. I come here on Saturday and go to church Sunday - tomorrow.
The rhythmically soothing depth grips each week to assert truth and holistic living. Glad I have watched all the 153 episodes and drunk some fresh water through @Carr and @Hunter.
Good everything. Ready to have my mind blown, Which happens on a weekly basis as the two of you extend our understanding and drop knowledge on the diaspora
Thank you soooo much for mentioning Black Catholicism, being from Louisiana being Catholic is common, however travelling once I reached adulthood I not only found people were shocked to hear I was a Black Catholic but I neve realized how hated Catholicism was in this country since I grew up in the one state where it is accepted widely....ANNND you are so right; being Catholic was a seamless transition to Kemetic Spirituality which I cannot describe how it felt when I came across the knowledge. It was as if my destination was being revealed.
GOD MORNING Y'ALL, I had to take the time and say BLESS you Doc Carr for taking me back to my years of graduating from high school in Evanston. Hanging out with the Black Panthers in Chicago, then moving over to Operation bread basket and PUSH. Now living in Los Angeles. Loving every Saturday with you and professor Hunter. GOD BLESS all that you both are doing.
In these times perilous but joyous to know where you come from is such a great privilege..Thanks for the show always.Said I wouldn't tell nobody could keep to myself what these Saturdays mean to me!!!
Thank you for this lively session of "In Class" Prof. Hunter and Dr. Carr!! Who can forget the musical wizardry of Burt Bacharach and his compositions? He was a true musical genius!👏🏾👏🏾 May he Rest Easy in Peace! And, may all our ancestors Rest Easy in Eternal Power and Peace!!💐 Love the melodies Dr. Carr makes!!🎶🎼🎵 Thanks for the end of week 'soul' food, y'all!! 🙏🏿🖤💯
Burt's song "Nikki," named for his daughter with Angie Dickinson, was the theme for the ABC Sunday Night Movie which brought me so much movie-lovin' joy as a child. And I couldn't wait to say, "Yes" to Martini & Rossi on the rocks. 🍹🍸🍷
Isaac Hayes is a great artist who excelled at Africanizing Bacharach’s music. Check out “Close to You” from one of the greatest albums of all time, “Black Moses”!
it needed a good edit...it could have been about 100 pages fewer and more effective...but the industry doesn't develop good editors anymore. Toni Morrison was an EDITOR for years before actually publishing/writing.
Growing up in Roxbury, my family after church Concord Baptist went to Bill's rotisserie chicken restaurant to pick up dinner. His restaurant had the chicken's in the window becking you to come on in!!!!
Good afternoon sitting in today brought me back to track of the cat. I love it Berk was a creative artist who knew his music worked to amplify the black lyrical voice.he crossed over.
Recently completed for a second time Russel’s autobiography Second Wind The first 50 pages about his upbringing in Louisiana is amazing. Did the Net Flix documentary talk about the fact that some of the White fans in Boston defecate in his bed while he was away while he was winning all those championships. The logo of the NBA should be Russel not Jerry West. Russel beat Jerry West so many times in the NBA finals that it sent West into a deep depression .
Our young people are not to blame for the decline in music. Public education ending funding for arts and music programs is. And many are late to accessing digital music tech until much later or not at all.
no...young learn from the previous generations. My parents played Stevie, Jerry Butler, Nina Simone, Teddy Pendergrass, James Cleveland, Shirley Caesar on a loop and I fell in love. Children learn from their elders. The problem is the elders want to be children.

It really is...and you're melanemic...white is a power construct. Nobody is white. And welcome home!
Thank you for this informative lesson. At the age of 72, and taken African/Black studies courses, I have not ever heard of Dr. Olive Taylor
