4:55 That's the "player aid" I ALWAYS knew I needed. I love the game, but learning it was painful because of the amount of info I needed to assimilate to play this correctly. It's a great game, and these improvements are *chef's kiss*
25:15 - Since every monastery has a different effect/power, you should keep the cardboard tiles there to see which monastery you have there in your duchy. Mostly because all 3D monasteries are the same design. That won't happen with the other buildings where you can return the tile to the box once you build it.
I am still waiting for my Royal Pledge copy and I am so exited. This is my most anticipated game in 2023. I was so torn as I wanted minis very much but cost was so high. Now I am happy that I chosen acrylic tiles as I believe minis should be painted with diferrent colors not just one. It would elevate apperance up to the sky and convince me to back all. Btw Rahdo minis do not have information on the other side as acrilic tiles so functionality is the same 😀
So in the terrain pack, the punch out that goes on the left of the board, that’s where you can place your yellow monastery tiles to remember your ongoing benefits when you place the 3D terrain on your board. If you use the cardboard with the writing on the back you can just keep the writing face up to always remember.
8:16 it's not the 1st time, goods tokens had goods on them on the anniversary edition 19:17 It's not for the animals, it's for the vineyards 25:14 You don't put the 3d monasteries on the side. That side board holds the 2d tile so you can remember what it is, since the 3d version of the monasteries are all the same 25:38 Those are the Inn's an expansion I feel this video should have the goofs subtitles also 😅
Completely agree about the goods being used to keep track of the rounds, why would you change that? But the turn order track doesn't keep track of your prestige, the score track does that. The turn order track keeps track of how much shipping you've done. So it makes perfect sense that that would be a ship and not a castle.
They should have told people to first buy a bigger table LOL Glad they improved the male-female ratio (at least 1 main figure and the double-sided worker tiles). Very cool!
Very cool! I don’t think I’d buy this, even at retail. Shelf space is a premium for me and my 20th anniversary Alea version is more than enough. Fits in a normal sized box as well. I would definitely play someone else’s copy though.
The reason people wanted player order markers to be boats instead of castles is because you move the player order marker when you place the ship tile which is when you take that shipping action and get the goods tiles. So having your ship move forward makes sense. To me, the score tracker would make more sense as a castle to represent power and influence as you say, etc. but I do agree with people’s sentiments that they should be boats.
they would be pretty crappy dumpy boats to make them stackable, and wouldn't really fit in with the aesthetic of the rest of the game, looking nothing like the boats that actually appear on your board, for instance :)
oh wait, it's not a river. it's a wall on the board, because the marker is a tower. towers belong on walls, so yes, i'm back to 100% not seeing the point of a physically representation of our growth in power (turn order) being represented by a short squatty boat instead of being shown as an addition to our castle. since it's called castles of burgunday, not boats of burgundy :)
@@rahdo yea but that was what upset people. It’s a boat tile being used to ship good. So it would make sense to have it be a river with boats moving goods. Towers don’t normally move on walls lol. But I’m fine with it.
So the little side board with the monastery slots on it is for storing the tiles you have layed down while the 3d terrain fills their spot on the board. That way you know what abilities you have unlocked.
@@rahdo The one I have is just a printer and connects to my tablet wirelessly. Once I get the font and size down it's easy. Just type and print. Then cut and apply. Usually do this while watching RUclips videos lol
I am excited for everyone that is excited about this, but after seeing everything complete, my honest feeling is I would have loved to see all that time and money going into designing a new game, rather than dress up and (to an extent) cash-grab for such an old one. I love CoB, but this is just so silly.
iirc it was around $100 for the main box (putting aside all of the acrylic stuff and terrain minis), and to me that doesn't seem too unreasonable considering the huge amount of gameplay in the box... a decade's worth of mini-expansions (that all bought separately would likely cost more than the cost of this box), plus a significant expansion that really adds a lot to theinyardy reboust new solo mode, and all of it with a really top notch production.
The designer really didn’t spend much time designing this from what I understand (recommend Bonfire if you want something new). Reprints take production time but low design and development in terms of gameplay. Definitely over the top but it’s nice Castles got what it deserved (and then some). Note, most of us did not get the 3D terrain tiles (extra).
I mean, developing a new game takes years of time and effort. Here you already had a game, completely different people and skillsets involved. And I wouldn't really call it a cash grab when it's still a popular game that's know for it's lackluster appearance. I know I can convince a few friends to play this version where I would have struggled with the old ones.
I’m on the other side of this. I love this! I hope AR will do more of this to old “ugly” titles. I would more inclined to buy that I know that is good than take a chance on something new.
The bag for the goods, for me, its to mix everything in the setup. I bought for my anniversary edition and I always do that. Otherwise you heve to mix lile dominoes.
@@rahdo It's not exactly a bad thing, but the bag would make it easier. Since it's a premium version, I was expecting this. But it's not the end of the world 😅 I have one question: how was it to play with the minis? It was the only thing I didn't get because it looks like it breaks the dynamic of the game. It was too expensive for the risk of not using it. However, this is my favorite game of all time, depending on the opinions I might search for in the future.
i haven't tried it with the terrain minis as yet, but man vs meeple did a playthrough using them a few days ago and you can check that out here: ruclips.net/video/6iQ_aRLECew/видео.html
You missed the point of the fifth bag. Prefilled tiles that you mentioned are face up and only for that round. There are stacks of face down tiles waiting to be revealed later. Those stackes could’ve been a marker and face up tiles could’ve been pulled out of the bag. This way you have to make extra effort to male sure all tiles are face down when you are making stacks for each round.
by my count, of the roughly 15 seconds it takes to set up the goods tiles at the beginning of the game, about 7 or 8 seconds go towards flipping the tiles face down, so that's not too onerous imo. otoh, pulling them from a bag mid game requires introducing an additional track on the main board to monitor which phase we're in (this of course is not necessary in the game as originally designed). my point is that this track's upkeep will be incredibly easy to forget to do during a long game, and will be forgotten often because the game is so crunchy. so why introduce an extra step that is easy to forget and can cause the game to break down to spread 15 seconds of setup out across the entire game (setting up 5 separate times at the start of each phase rather than doing it all at once during setup)
There is no need for additional track. Track where are now stacks can be used for a round tracker. There is no chance you’ll forget because even if you do, you’ll remember as soon as you roll a white die and fill face up tiles from the bag. I know it works because I have a bag for my original version and have been using it that way.
we're going to have to disagree i reckon. players forget to advance round trackers in euros ALL THE TIME (i know this from talking to game developers who deal with tons of feedback from playtests). it's one of the most common mistakes made... "wait, are we in the 5th round? did we advance this track when we did all the other stuff?" there's no implicitly way to tell... you just have to trust memory in a game where you're already juggling a lot of other mental load. so why introduce this uncertainty for no reason other than to take an at most 20 second setup task, and spread it throughout the whole game. it makes no sense to me, and then of course you're increasing the cost of the game by throwing another bag in as well :)
@@rahdo Placing all the tiles on the table, flipping those upside down to the other side, shuffle them up weirdly on the table like a kid, making five stacks with five tiles each AND sorting them back into the insert at the end of the games, takes WAY longer than 15 to 20 seconds. In fact, I think your estimation is that off, that I have a hard time believing you honestly think it's true yourself. This part of the setup is so annoying, that I bought bags for the hex and goods after my first few plays of the game. Now, I've played the game hundreds of times, it's one of my favourites of all time and maybe twice I've forgotten to advance the phase tracker. And even that wasn't really a problem, since the points you earn during the game are in part directly connected to the phase your in, so it's always easy to deduct which phase the tracker should be in. Overall I love what Awaken Realms has done with this version, but the missing fifth bag and phase tracker are annoying as hell.
i don't know what to tell you. i filmed a solo runthrough of the game today (will be published by saturday) and as i was setting up, i timed myself, and it took just over 20 seconds to set up the trade tiles, and that was only because the new trade tiles are slick wood, and one of the stacks fell over and i had to restack it. and a phase tracker would have been (IMO) a horrible decision, but i've already discussed why above! maybe at castles of burgundy tournaments, they should determine first player by who can set up the trade files fastest!
Will they ever sell the "Non-Ridiculous" Base game in this new polished look? One that I won't need to get a second mortgage in order to purchase it? 😅
i believe there will be a retail version of this game later on. it was $100 for just the base game when it was crowdfunding, which considering everything you get (a decade's worth of mini-expansions, the souped up solo mode, the new vineyards stuff) plus the over the top production doesnj't seem unreasonable to me :)
@@rahdo Ok Cool. Yea, I like the base game just fine the way it is so I hope the Retail version will be just the Base game with the new look. Hoping for a $60 max price tag. But who knows.
i would assume it would be cheaper simply because the minis wouldn't be sundrop painted like this version. and they could cut costs more by leaving out the plastic hex grid and cutting a few other corners as well :)
Do you think there is space somewhere in there for the acrylic tokens? (Not the hexes as i know they can be swapped in.) The goods tokens are wooden 😁 I like the new dice design as well.
The look of the main board is the only subpar part of this design - when I look at e.g. Brass or even the new La Granja version I wish this one looked like them... But everything else is stellar!
yup, it's still a bit utilitarian, but ont he plus side that means you focus on the pieces and aren't distracted by extra stuff. the player boards are FANTASTIC though :)
those stacking towers should be VP-counters. THIS actually represents your growing influence (in a form of victory points). People wanted boats as turn order markers because... it's more intuitive to move a ship counter after placing a ship tile than to move a tower?
i would have been happy with 2 sets of the stacking towers, for the turn order track & the vp track. tbh that makes the most sense to me from a usability standpoint. the busts are nice, but i can see them being a problem in a higher player count game. regarding the intuitiveness of a turn order tack, all i can say is that people have been playing burgundy for over a decade and no one has ever said "hey, wait! after i build a ship, why do i move this disc up this track? this makes no sense. if it was a boat, then i'd understand, but surely you must have read the rules wrong, because why would i move a disc after a boat is built?" forgive my snark, but my point is there's nothing unintuitive about moving yourself up the turn order track when you play a ship. to me it makes perfect thematic sense... the more of a fleet of ships i have, the more tied in i am to the power dynamics of the burgeoning European economy. ships were literally the best way to connect with the world at this time in history, so why wouldn't they move me up the turn order track? Plus, stackable ships would be really crap looking, while stacking towers are cool looking and very satisfying the way they snap together :)
Pretty sure the main reason they didn't do ships is the actual stackable part, that's the whole point of the turnorder track. While you could probably make some form of ship-like figure you could stack, they probably wouldn't be very aesthetic. Or I'm lacking in imagination ;) And ship tiles are probably the easiest ones to remember in the game, so I don't really see the need for intuitiveness there.
@@rahdo if you can make stacking camels in Camel Up, you can make stackable ships in Burgundy ;). The "double tower" solution would be perfect though. I will probably buy a set of wooden discs to use as scoring markers anyway :).
Is this the Sundrop Version? Have to agree with the scoring markers. That’s one of the first thing I picked up on the prototype. Can’t fit multiple statues in a single spot. From my multiple plays that happens a lot. Don’t think they needed a bag for the goods unless u just wanted them stored in the bag when packing up. Agree that they should just be set up all at the start and forget about.
there was a non-sundrop edition avaialble when they ran the crowdfunding edition that was $10 cheaper. there was also a "no minis" version that was $20 cheaper.
yes, it's common practice for the publisher to order a separate batch of a game off the production line and get it airmailed at HUGE expense to send out to media folks and use for conventions and whatnot. never fear, your copy is on the way i'm sure! :)
@@rahdo I know this is standard practice and you did nothing wrong here but this really makes me angry. They currently are not selling or taking more pledges so why do they need to generate buzz? I already paid for a copy why are they prioritizing the potential future sales over fulfilling the order? I know this is first world problems but why is this an acceptable practice? Any other industry or service it would not be acceptable.
i'm really sorry my video upset you. that is never my intent and it's genuinely saddens me. but i'm not sure that i agree though that this is uncommon. for instance, over the last week i've watched a bunch of videos with youtubers who've gotten early hands on with the new apple vr googles that we won't see for a long time. why? to build buzz for a thing that won't be available at retail for at a year or more. early preview items are super common... reviewers see movies early, drive cars early, play videogames early, watch tv shows early, use smartphones early, etc. sometimes days early, sometimes months early. sometimes years early. but all in the interest of building and sustaining interest because that's just smart business. you want people to be excited _before_ your product comes out, and you want that excitement maintained up till the moment it releases for maximum sales. so the publisher spends a few thousand $ extra to get super early copies out to folks like me to build excitement amongst the general public (who often have no idea the game even exists). a few months later, backers get the game and if they love it and post about it, that builds more excitement. a few months after that, the game is available at retail, and that half-a-year of excitement building translates to better sales and a company less likely to go out of business, so it can keep going and produce the next game. anyway, i suspect this is cold comfort, and again i'm sorry that my video and my part in the process above has literally brought you real distress. that genuinely distresses me and all i can say is i hope you enjoy the game as much as i do when you get your copy! :)
As someone that's played CoB a fair amount, I'll probably play with the acrylic tiles, but I'd never do it teaching the game. A bit of a shame. I got the terrain mostly for resale value ;)
nope, i'm afraid not. part of a smaller advance shipment for media and such. i think MvM have gotten their copy too and are live streaming a playthrough tomorrow.
I believe it has both the old solo mode and a new automa. Or rather is has the old "10th expansion" with a solo board and then it has the completely new solo mode with the automa opponent.

forgive my snark, but my point is there's nothing unintuitive about moving yourself up the turn order track when you play a ship. to me it makes perfect thematic sense... the more of a fleet of ships i have, the more tied in i am to the power dynamics of the burgeoning European economy. ships were literally the best way to connect with the world at this time in history, so why wouldn't they move me up the turn order track?
Agree that they should just be set up all at the start and forget about.
yes it is sundrop and looks great
@@rahdo I wonder what the non sundrop ones look like. Are all special editions sundrop?
there was a non-sundrop edition avaialble when they ran the crowdfunding edition that was $10 cheaper. there was also a "no minis" version that was $20 cheaper.
Will there be a solo run through?
i'll have to take a look. i am keen to try it out!
@@rahdo If you do, please tag me if you have any questions.
Anyone know if the core box without miniature will me smaller?
Hmmm, yours came much sooner. I'm still waiting for mine.
yes, it's common practice for the publisher to order a separate batch of a game off the production line and get it airmailed at HUGE expense to send out to media folks and use for conventions and whatnot. never fear, your copy is on the way i'm sure!
A lot if the stuff you didn’t know what it was, was for the solo stuff.
ah ha! i'm even more intrigued by this new solo mode now!
@@rahdo 7:14 is the solo opponent board. 19:30 are solo opponent cards. each card is a priority for which hex tiles the bot will attempt to take.
As someone that's played CoB a fair amount, I'll probably play with the acrylic tiles, but I'd never do it teaching the game. A bit of a shame.
I got the terrain mostly for resale value ;)
Is your copy part of the US shipment?
nope, i'm afraid not. part of a smaller advance shipment for media and such. i think MvM have gotten their copy too and are live streaming a playthrough tomorrow.
I believe the estimate deliveries for backers is in july
@@nihlify And that's only a partial shipment.
I'm feeling good about my decision to stick with my Alea version.
😳😳😳😳 how big of a loan do I need to get from the bank?? I have too own this special edition one day.
Not too much. The good news is that the Fed didn't raise interest rates up today so you have that going for you......😜
Could you imagine how epic this game would be if they had the text on the back of that acrylic??
I can’t wait to try some stickers if they hold up.
i was kind of secretly hoping that would be the case!
@@rahdo get a label machine to fix this issue
So does it have a different solo mode than previous version?
Yes, it has an automated solo opponent.
I believe it has both the old solo mode and a new automa. Or rather is has the old "10th expansion" with a solo board and then it has the completely new solo mode with the automa opponent.
Castles of burgundy: the roided up bodybuilder version with way too much going on ;)
