Nobody will ever believe me (other than a couple dorm-mates I was kicking it with on a boring Saturday night in '99), but I actually beat this sucker without using any cheats. I was down to my last life, and VERY LAST bar of health, and my shotgun fully connected with the (fucking impossible) final boss on what had to be my last frame of invincibility off a damage boost. Bar-none, one of my most epic gaming accomplishments ever.
@@knoopi74 Well back in the day unless you got the cheats from a magazine or cheat book - most likely you didnt have the cheats haha thank god for the internet now
@@fattony75 I remember seeing the cheats for this in Nintendo power then losing it then I called the 1-900 number for Nintendo power and asked them and IMMEDIATELY hung up without saying thanks because I was trying to save money on the bill lol but I'm pretty sure it was a minimum 4 minutes so prolly cost 12 bucks.
What sold me was the first level. Espionage? Where you go through a party to get to the backrooms without having to gun everything down or the enemies knowing youre about to blast your way out? That was awesome. What bothered me though was, every level after that was you killing badguys and them trying kill you. That first level was cool as shit and i thought there was going be at least a few more levels like that.
Man I wanted this game since before it was released, based on the Nintendo Power feature, and I never did get to play it. I might finally remedy that, 20 years later.
This was one of my favourite games growing up. Still have my Genisis cart. Didn't really know many people that had played it and most reviews weren't good but I loved it.
I swear I watched True Lies over ten times within a couple of years on Free To Air television when I was a kid... they loved playing that movie. This game looks sick, the graphics are amazing for what it is!
Same here! It seems like there was a small number of movies I'd see many times, but overall I hadn't seen most popular movies because it was my primary source
I loved playing this as a teenager. The gameplay is perfectly solid and shooting bad guys feels adequately satisfying. I always liked how they ate several Uzi rounds before dying, just like the bad guys in your favorite Arnie flick. :D Unfortunately I only had access to a cut european version where the baddies bled green. Was a bit of a letdown. But it’s still a very fun game nonetheless!
I have been watching your channel for sometime now. I just bought this at my local shop because of this video. This game is a blast!! Just want to say thank you SNES Drunk. Keep up the great work.
yeah i heard this was good.. i was like what? then checked out this vid, . im now def on the look out for this LJN gem! thanks man. you do great stuff!
I realize there's only so many stock sounds you can use and some of them are always gonna be pretty similar, but I swear the shotgun SFX in this game is the exact same one from Doom.
I remember saving money as a kid to buy a game. I was in holidays and had a newspaper with me. In it was the advertising for this game and a few others which were half the normal price. I didn´t even believe it then. As soon as we git back I got this game and another. It was effin awesome :) Thx for bringing abck memories.
Just finished watching the movie again. Never noticed the note at the end of the credits to play the Acclaim game. Wanted to see what it was about. Thanks for the video. James Cameron does it again. I’m curious how involved he was in the production of this, if at all, considering the quality level you mentioned.
I had _so much fun_ with this game as a kid. It was the kind of fun where you don't even mind that you _will_ lose every single time. A magical balance at work.
I kind of always wanted to play this, even though i knew nothing about it... just for the movie tie in. is there a level where you have to direct jamie lee curtis' strip tease?
Honestly, that 'licensed games must automatically be bad' thing surprised me when I came across it on the web. As a kid I remember True Lies being well received in the gaming mags (although I never played it). Aladdin was great fun. Tiny Toon Adventures too. And I rented the hell out of the Star Wars games. Why on earth wouldn't I think licensed games had just a spread of good and bad as normal games???
I think AVGN needs to review this game. I know he usually only does shitty games, but since he did Maximum Carnage in his Wish List Part 2 video, I don't think it would hurt for him to try this one out and make a review on it.
I used to play this on Christmas as a kid and pretended that it was a Die Hard game. Luckily Die Hard Trilogy came out a couple of years latter, but I still really love this game.
I can’t remember if it was this game, but I do remember AVGN once did w video about a bad Konami game and a good LJN game. This might’ve been the 1 good LJN game.
I fucking love this game. The movie is good too. (Just wanted to check and see if you've covered this after your latest "Demolition Man" video, and you have.)
This was another rare game back in the day that had blood in it since Nintendo was so up tight on video game violent and plus it received a Teen rating!
I got this as birthday present from my dad back when it came out in '95. I think it was like 100€ allmost... Maybe the best snes action game, definetely the best movie licensed game of that gen by landslide. I just spotted it on sale and with shipping expences it would be 70€, its CIB but still the price is little steep, 45e would be okay, but i think im gonna go for it. Where i live, and i mean inside the country i live, i have only seen this one and another which was over 4 y ago... that one was 100e for the cartridge only!! But i gotta have this because of nostalgia and because it was one of the few harder games that i made through as kid.
This game is rather difficult without using any of the "cheats", but yet difficult as it is, it lets you play for quite awhile even if you're not that skilled at it, given the fact it gives you several lives and you can take a lot of hits before you die. It's NintendoHard, but not the sort of NintendoHard that kills you in 30 seconds and sends you back to the very beginning. Most players should be able to finish at least the first two stages on their first try, probably run out of lives on the third, but yet maybe the second try you actually get into the 4th stage, and so on. It's the good kind of challenging.
Man I wish I had this game when I was younger I would of enjoyed it but nah I was stuck with last action hero on snes when it came to Arnold games which is like the worst
I am quite new to retrogaming, I got a snes classic mini console and have tried hundreds of snes and genesis games so far. true lies is by far my favorite game of all, does anyone know any other games that are similar? I'm looking for similar Top-down or isometric run-and-gun/shooters with strafe mode just like true lies. I tried Skeleton crew on genesis, but it doesn't come close to the fun true lies gameplay experience.
@@SNESdrunk They're not bad, but they don't have much in the way of large maps like in true lies, or dodging behind corners, and enemies being in regular spots like in true lies. I think that there simply aren't any more 16 bit games like true lies, and I will have to try games on more advanced consoles like the saturn and Playstation, I've heard good things about "loaded" for saturn and "Die hard" on PS, but then I'll also have to leave the beloved 16bit simplicity behind... BTW, there's a DOS game called operation carnage which is probably a rip off of smash TV and total carnage, but done really well.
They generally just outsourced games to low bidders, I guess this time they accidentally hired a dev team which were actually invested in making a fun game.
I think this had a gameboy version which was just a shrunk down version of this. Not the best but not the worst by far. Ghostbusters was a worse licenced game on gameboy
And without the frustrating 1 hit 1 kill system Hotline Miami is infamous for due to it's cheap AI that attacks you the moment they see you. Worse is some enemies require certain weapons to be killed (i.e. dogs can only be killed with any weapon while the ''big guys'' require any firearm)
