    Nice update! One little correction though: At least as far as the Japanese version goes, once you unlock the Napalm Gun by shooting only the boss in the first level, you don't need to do anything else in order to keep it. There is a rumour that beating the second level the way you mentioned makes the Napalm Gun upgradable, but I've done that and it's not the case.

    • @IKKIsama14
      @IKKIsama14 Год назад +6

      @rafaelkuhn5154 Год назад +2

      @@TomAznable Well observed! However, I believe you only lose the Napalm Gun if you actually die during the second level. The extra challenge of not getting hit/not destroying anything should enable the upgrade, but you don't have to do that in order to keep the weapon itself - I've never managed that steep challenge and always got to keep the Napalm.

    • @TomAznable
      @TomAznable Год назад +3

      @@rafaelkuhn5154 You're 100% correct on that - you definitely don't lose the Napalm unless you die on stage 2. It took me a few tries before I successfully unlocked the upgradable version, it's pretty tricky to not only avoid asteroids but those mines as well! There's one spot in particular where you drop down vertically a little before the boss where it's very easy to set off a mine.

    Some corrections about the napalm weapon:
    - On Mission 1: DO NOT SHOOT ANY ENEMY, INCLUDING THE TURRETS OF THE BOSS. FIRE ONLY AT THE CENTER MASS OF THE BOSS.
    -After obtaining the napalm weapon in Mission 2, all you have to do to keep it, is finishing the mission.
    You can take damage, but if you lose a life in Mission 2, you don't keep the napalm weapon.
    -The napalm weapon is insanely powerful, it one-shot kills pretty much every enemy and kills even bosses with 4-5 well placed shots.
    The downside is: it doesn't have much of a range and you need to fire it like a mortar in an arch, in order to hit enemies who are far away. Also, the napalm weapon, if used too much, needs some time to reload, like a cool-down, so use it wisely.
    Oh and anothet thing:
    USE YOUR SHIELD.
    Don't try to play this game like a typical run and gun like Contra.
    Move slow, use the shield.

    You should consider uploading in at least 1440p. Even if you recorded the footage at 720p, using something like obs to upscale it to higher resolutions can really help on youtube. It's not like that upscale is producing any details that weren't there before, but 1440p and up on youtube gets a significantly higher bitrate. That means less artifacting and softness on edges. Two things that do not do old pixel graphics any justice at all. Keep up the good work dawg! I'm pretty sure we both started our channels around the same time. Insane how time flies.

    One aspect that impressed me back in 1993 and still does now, is the feeling of weight the Mech has. It is clearly a 5-ton death machine, and not made of papier mache.

    It really is one of the best Nintendo games. For everything this game did at the time, it could be considered the gold standard for a shoot ‘em up.
    Your ability to jump as he mention feels clunky because you’re a mech. Really adds to the feeling of fighting.
    The variety of weapons is also great. Power ups that you can find can be used on many different weapons, and you feel rewarded for exploring the level when that makes you stronger.
    The storyline is also pretty damn cool. You start out feeling like you’re just fighting in a war, but the little bits of dialogue and characters you meet give your soldier Jake personality.
    By the time you approach the final stage, it all blends together. You’re one of the last mech soldiers left on your ship, your ship enters the level looking absolutely thrashed to represent your brutal journey, and you’ve powered up your weapons to defeat the toughest enemies to come.
    I believe there is even a little romantic ending. When you complete the final level (the version where you don’t meet the big bad), you exit your busted mech and embrace the female communications officer that has been with you the entire journey.
    At least I assumed the two ended up together. Her starts out in the beginning as “just business”, but by the end she is genuinely fearful we might die.
    All of this packed into an hour.

    Quick note on getting the upgrade for the napalm gun.
    "All" you have to do is not get hit by the small destructable asteroids and only shoot the final boss like in the first level.
    That means the small asteroids in the beginning, the asteroids with the turrets later, and the asteroids that get spawned by the boss.
    You can get hit and damaged by anything else, besides the small destructable asteroids.
    There is like a single video on youtube about it and shows the playthrough and on level 3 how the dash got replaced with the number counter.

    Declassified does have the original ending! But the best thing about Declassified is all the extras, like they wanted to do a physical copy but didn't have the money to do so, the arranged OST created with the original sound samples is great.

    It's true english can take up more space. JP language games also tend to display the text a bit faster, making speedrunners prefer those.

    I will add I am all for content creators revisiting things they may have covered already with a fresh set of eyes and their updated skills as a creator. Let's them re-evaluate popular items and after so many years it's probable most people have forgotten the older video almost entirely, or never watched it to begin with.

    Nintendo Power had early screenshots of this game and I was very excited to play it when it came out, it was one of the first games I played on SNES. I was disappointed that it didn't have the character portraits during dialogue but otherwise the level of detail and polish that went into it put most other SNES games to shame.

    When our video store sold all their NES and SNES games we got there the day after. All that was left were a bunch of sports games and this. I got this, my little brother got some other non-sport game but I can't remember what. Years later, like 20 or so, I sold this for like $400 I think. It was technically CIB, the cart wasn't that beat up, but the manual was pristine as our rental place xeroxed the manuals and then filed the manuals in their office. The box however had huge tears in it but the people bidding on it knew because I had lots of pictures on ebay. Had I sold it for as much as a loose cart I'd be kicking myself but since I got so much I don't feel bad. It would just be in a storage box somewhere in my parent's house but now it is probably on a shelf on display somewhere now.

    "The Adventures of Bayou Billy" was another NES game that mashed genres. For the most part, it's a side-scrolling beat-'em-up. Then it turns into a first-person shooter, and then it has a couple third-person driving stages. The FPS stages have that rare trait where if you run out of ammo: instant death. It makes sense since, with no bullets, you have nothing to defend yourself with, or, ironically, nothing to pick up more ammo with. There's even a still-shot of Bayou Billy getting blown away when you die in a FPS stage.
