i think it should be noted that the radish is mixed with flour. in fact, the flour proportion nowadays are usually higher than the radish itself. occasionally some shops would have a bit of shredded carrots in it and you could see the orange strips when up close
randomjean i’d say it’s because of cost, its cheaper if course to use more flour than radish but it also effects the way the cake it self because it would be more dense and less enjoyable to eat. Take note also these days the carrot cake hawker are more likely to use factory made radish cake than making it themselves

Reminds me of my childhood in muar. We use to go "makan" this every Thursday after me and my sister finish our tuition. We use to order carrot cake and wantan me (soup). Unfortunately since we moved to the us we couldn't fine the same kind of food here. Don't get me wrong though there are plenty of carrot cake in China Town but nothing beats the taste of the once we use to eat back at home. Unfortunately on my last visit to Malaysia, I get to know the uncle passed away 3 years ago and the kids we not interested in learning the trade although the father insist. It's daikon radish, often called white or winter radish and for some odd reason mistranslated to carrot. If you look at daikon, it does kind of look carrot like.

Yep! Steamed grated radish with rice flour slurry. If it's meant to be eaten as is, we normally put dried shrimp, shiitake mushrooms or cured pork in as well, but the frying version is just plain radish and rice slurry.

The radish. Some call it white carrot, hence the name.
It's daikon radish, often called white or winter radish and for some odd reason mistranslated to carrot. If you look at daikon, it does kind of look carrot like.
@@tjs114 it's not a mistranslation, it's more like a direct translation. In mandarin and cantonese, radish is literally called white carrot.
This dish uses white radish. In Chinese, white radish is called "bai lo bo" (white carrot). This dish is named "lo bo gau", which was mistranslated to "carrot cake" in English, when it means "radish cake".
Wow, that's.....nowhere near what I know as carrot cake, but I imagine it's got an amazing flavor all its own.

I expected a literal carrot cake to just be plopped on the grill to be pan fried and that was not what I was expecting. Looks like an omelet with mystery ingredients to me lol

Yep! Steamed grated radish with rice flour slurry. If it's meant to be eaten as is, we normally put dried shrimp, shiitake mushrooms or cured pork in as well, but the frying version is just plain radish and rice slurry.

There is both black and white fried carrot cake in Singapore, this video only shows the white carrot cake though
