CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Rose (Olympia Dukakis) confronts Cosmo (Vincent Gardenia) about his affair.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
When there's a full moon over Brooklyn, anything can happen, and everything happens in the neighborhood where widowed bookkeeper Loretta Castorini (Cher) lives. First, Loretta agrees to marry a man she does not love, Johnny Cammareri (Danny Aiello), simply because he knows how to propose properly. Before the wedding can take place, Cammareri must visit his dying mother in Sicily. In his absence, Loretta is supposed to try to patch up the differences between Johnny and his brother, bakery operator Ronny Cammareri (Nicolas Cage). Having never forgiven Johnny for indirectly causing the accident that crippled him, Ronny flies into a rage whenever his brother's name is mentioned. He does, however, fall for Loretta like a ton of bricks. After a torrid affair, Loretta tries to avoid Ronny out of respect to Johnny, but he's just too fascinating to resist. Meanwhile, Loretta's father (Vincent Gardenia) is fooling around with his mistress Mona (Anita Gillette), while Loretta's mother (Olympia Dukakis) is wooed by a college professor (John Mahoney). These brief flings are forgiven and forgotten, but there's still the delicate situation of Loretta being in love with her future brother-in-law. A now-classic romantic comedy, Moonstruck won Oscars for Cher, Olympia Dukakis, and screenwriter John Patrick Shanley.

We have lost another classy, beautiful, elegant actress. She was so believable in every role she played. RIP
The moment that cosmo and rose share and speak in Italian to each other is a tender moment that often is overlooked
This scene made me well up w/ tears. The way she confronts him. At first he wants to show his dominance anger & embarrassment at being called out in front of other people esp his dad & daughter & the man he saw his daughter cheating with. Then he realizes he loves rose not that tacky mona. He knows he is wrong & is not going to ruin all they have by getting angry. Love when she says ti amo but almost a bit insecure & he firmly delivers it back & blows her a kiss & I love how she takes it in with long breath & she feels confident & happy again. This movie is perfect. Every scene is flawless. Funny happy sad in one scene. It really is a love letter to Brooklyn to ny & Italians. What an incredible cast too. Not just lorettas family but cage , aiello & a very pre frasier john Mahoney. Olympia & cher crush it in their oscar winning roles as mom & daughter.
The budget was only 15 mill & made close to 100 mill. Shows that as long as u have great writing acting & directing u dont need 200 million in a budget to blow crap up. Great writing esp does not cost that much. This movie literally unfolds like a little play. It should be on Broadway.
You took the words right out of my mouth. I can recommend the DVD special edition with shots from the readings. Moonstruck is the all- time greatest love flick.
No one cares for your useless detailed explanation ok? You want to explain. BECOME A PREACHER. Until then, no one cares about your analysis. Keep them to yourself, thank you very much.
It’s a masterpiece! I love getting the peek into old school Italian culture and family! I had no idea of that world and it was utterly real, tough, beautiful and endearing! I love Italian, Hispanic culture, very strong family!
Your description of what makes this film so special is spot on. “Funny happy sad in one scene”
It’s one of my favorite films. Worth watching repeatedly.
I’ve always seen his reply at 1:22 as just placating her, but your comment made me feel better about it 🖤
RIP Olympia Dukakis, such a wonderful performance.
Te amo, Olympia Dukakis; 1931-2021. We'll always leave the kitchen light on for you.
She owned this scene, terrific and versatile actress!
And she breathes in his kiss fine actress
This comment is so sweet. Xo
RIP Olympia Dukakis
This scene drops the mic. It leaves an echo of " .... and that's how it's done".
Watching this movie once a year and I love it more and more every time.....
This woman could flip a script. One minute, you cry for her, the next she makes you cry laughing... God Bless
the director here is world class. that slow getting up and slamming the table- perfect
RIP Olympia and everyone that isn’t Cher or Nicholas Cage. Such an iconic film and Olympia reminded me of my grandmother and aunt/Godmother rolled into one.
This is the best scene in the entire movie, she really deserves the award she won
Best scene in the movie when he throws her a kiss and she breathes it in.
Rest In Peace Mrs. Dukakis ❤️
Cher looks so gorgeous in this ❤️
Thank you Olympia for your work, and I wish you rest in peace. May the force be with her family and fans!
I'm just here to look at this kitchen. It's perfect.
Happy Days My mom loves the entire house (TOWNhouse!).
exactly! I read a film analysis somewhere, where the writer was criticizing how newer movies had kitchen sets that were "too polished", like they were getting ready to show an open house. movies like this one had real, believable kitchens! that showed that people actually lived there! and it's beautiful. :)
RIP Olympia. FIrst heard her on the Simpsons, then watched this movie later on. Masterful actress.
That small lift of the head at 0:51 when Rose realizes she finally has the upper hand.
She’s not trying to get the upper hand. She trying to save her marriage, and life the life she lives, with the man she loves. This is not about power, it’s about love.
Probably one of the most non-verbal scenes in cinematic history, and yet a profound one nonetheless. :)
Rest In Peace, Ms. Dukakis.
Such brilliant writing. Rose gets Cosmo to admit she's been a good wife, making her wanting him to stop seeing Mona the most reasonable, undeniable demand. The addition of having him go to confession lets him know she's serious beneath her calm demeanor. Finally, she wins him back by telling him she loves him, and he realizes how much he still loves her.
This is a MasterClass between two powerhouse actors at the top of their game. It’s beautifully real.
My fave movie of all time! Like a love poem to New York & Italians! ❤️♥️
RIP One of the greatest actresses and human beings on the planet
Best movie! Everyone was on their game. RIP Olympia Dukakis, you are missed
They are both brilliant. RIP Olympia!
Crying watching this...so heartbroken..
Anyone else think that went far better than it could have the first time you saw this scene?
Conniebrown well said She was very beautiful, extremely talented actress. One of my favorites just brilliant. She deserved the oscar .Wonderful in every role. I ever saw her in, forever In our hearts, we love you, Olympia. I believe you are with God in paradise, fly high angel. In our hearts forever, one of my favorite movies of all time. Thank you for the love and laughter rest inparadise.😢❤
I love every minute of this movie
A great scene in a movie filled with great scenes.
This is where Olympia won her Oscar
What an incredible piece of cinema
That Quaker/Georgian kitchen is now the most desired style of new kitchen design. And the most expensive. When the film premiered we mostly saw it as an old-fashioned and outdated kitchen, meant to disappear into the background. Today, I want every thing on the walls, floor, and cabinets.
Earlier in the film she asks Loretta if she loves Johnny and says good when she admits she doesn't, because she claims "the man can drive the woman crazy with that fact and they know it"
What's revealed throughout the film and in this scene is how she was advising Loretta based off her own experience., as she is madly in love with Cosmo.
Beautiful performance, Olympia!! Rest In Peace Queen 👑💜🌕
Это изумительный фильм. В нем нет ни одного просто проходного момента. Всё наполнено мыслью, теплом и характером. А артисты, тогда моложе - как замечательно играют. Все без исключения.
This scene makes me cry... 💧 💧 💧
This says it all regarding the film’s success: Budget
$15 million (very low for its day),
Box office $80.6 million! Wow! A huge hit!!!
Rest in peace Olympia
My father used to say Franceska there's only 2 kinds of people in this world Italians and people who wish they were lol This movie is one of my favorites of all time. Hysterically
funny, brilliant cast Olympia and Cher deserved the oscars they were Amazing rip OLYMPIA 4EVER IN OUR 💕 HEARTS 😢 u will be missed by all I was soo sad when I found out she passed i cried 😢❤
She was a great lady ..RIP Olympia .
The body language on this movie was awesome.
If you have an Italian father, you understand this scene perfectly.
I know what she says but not sure what he says. Can you help?

Rose: Have I been a good wife?
Cosmo: Yes
Rose: I want you to stop seeing her.
A silence falls over the room and everyone stops eating. Cosmo stands up and smashes his fist on the table and slowly sits down.
Cosmo: Ok
Rose: And go to confession.
Cosmo: A man understands one day that his life is built on nothing. And that’s a sad, crazy day.
Rose: Your life is not built on nothing. Ti amo.
Cosmo: Ti amo.
Hi slides his hand out and their eyes meet. It’s the first time he’s been able to hold her gaze in this whole story.
True
@@dinnfamHe says: " Anch'io ti amo". ( I love you too)
This is a perfect movie
Dukakis was in a class by herself in this film...but this was the money shot that propelled her over the finish line for the Oscar.
I love this so much! And I am Polish!
They don't make great movies like this anymore.
They really dont…
Someone, tell a joke...lol
What a great scene! Olympia nails it!
It gets to me when she says…T’amo ❤️
I love scene but I don't why she loves him. He's poo.
Gloria F I only saw this movie recently for the 1st time...i didn't realize what a great actress Olympia is.
You’ve never been with an Italian then
Stephen Greico women aren't programmed for anything. We aren't machines or robots. Weird.
i mean, how is it well known that men just want to go out and pro-create with women? there have been many cultures in the past where women were the ones with the stereotype of having the high libido and men were seen as stoic and not so interested in sex. i don't know why you're so hung up on the one-word weird; maybe i should have used ''Strange'' or ''Bizarre'' instead.
Tears every time. ❤
Wonderful scene
Ola saludos me gista mucho esta película porfsvor me pueden decir cono seyama la película en español porfavor
If only couples resolved their issues like this today ha!
Nuno Soares no need for marriage counseling
Nobody resolves their issues like this in real life. Today or waaay back in 1987. Great scene, but it's still a movie.
I love this scene and showing cosmo having a moment of weakness, I don’t approve of what he did but I have sympathy for his fears of old age. He loves his wife he’s just a stupid old man who made a mistake.
Director did a good job with the italian setting..all except for the oatmeal..
anthony burgio What's wrong with the oatmeal?
nothing its not really eaten that much in Italy.
They're in Brooklyn, where Mario and Luigi are from.
They're in Brooklyn and we eat plenty of oatmeal here.
DJ Lombardi no ferina it must be farina
Olympia Dukakis, RIP.
R.I.P Olympia.
Great Movie ❤
Heroic talent!
Olympia Dukakis❤️💫
this right here separates this film from other romcoms
Rose is a legend l.

Olympia Dukakis is Greek actually and oh I'd love these Italians and the thing with em and the fact they not actually Italian more of Descendents they Americans of Italian ancestry So do it up with Italian American even though I'm Southern American
Such a magical cast. All are gone except Cher, Nic Cage and Olympia
Didn't Age Well
Olympia just passd away. 😦
@@sherylsimmons8111 I know! So sad.
Frank Lorenzo, RIP
I see my baby, Vincent Gardenia!
Great scene, and all of them are great actors.
Good actress
.58 olympia delivers her lines not unlike a jen lawrence delivers lines in american hustle. very powerful, same with silver linings.
He loves his wife. He’ll stop the affair.
What it looks like to have overused Humanity to an extreme. In this case, she has been subservient for too long and ends up being taken advantage of by the omission of assertiveness.
😂 that's what you got out of this scene?
Pearls before swine.
Have I been a good wife? ,👀 Ya. Lol
How do these women do it? How do they countenance so much? How do they sacrifice so much? Unbelievable. That lump should've been wearing that oatmeal.
11 yrs Amen😎💍
Yes the language is Italian and yes is beautiful
It's cheaper to keep her 😭
Where can I find a traditional Italian family like this?
Come visit mine!
Where can I join and be adopted by a traditional Italian family like this?
Ti amo... ♥️
Anch’io ti amo... 😘
Thank you for that it's exactly what I was searching for 🎉 I didn't know what exactly he said back and wanted to!!
Why did he slam his hands down on the table?
Because 1) he’d been caught seeing another woman, and 2) his wife confronted him semi-publicly, in front of their family.
It's usual to Greek or Italian families, when we saw that scene in Greek cinemas we laughed so hard, cause for a moment he tried to be the master of the family, but he had a change of heart... It was a gesture of let anyone in the home know who is the boss... We Greeks understand it..
Only part that isnt realistic is... her reaction to him saying is life was based on nothing, I don't know a single American woman of Italian/Sicilian descent that wouldn't have thrown a pot or worse at his head at that part and lost it. I know my mother would have.
A movie with dialogue that is every bit as entertaining as the biggest bomb explosion ever filmed. I miss movies with “small stories” human interaction and conversations that give you insights into the human condition and life in general…no flying creatures need attend.

Does anyone know what Cosmo's response is to Rose's Ti amo?
He says: "Anch'io ti amo", which means "I love you, too".
