CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Johnny (Danny Aiello) calls off his wedding to Loretta (Cher), leaving Ronny (Nicolas Cage) free to propose.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
When there's a full moon over Brooklyn, anything can happen, and everything happens in the neighborhood where widowed bookkeeper Loretta Castorini (Cher) lives. First, Loretta agrees to marry a man she does not love, Johnny Cammareri (Danny Aiello), simply because he knows how to propose properly. Before the wedding can take place, Cammareri must visit his dying mother in Sicily. In his absence, Loretta is supposed to try to patch up the differences between Johnny and his brother, bakery operator Ronny Cammareri (Nicolas Cage). Having never forgiven Johnny for indirectly causing the accident that crippled him, Ronny flies into a rage whenever his brother's name is mentioned. He does, however, fall for Loretta like a ton of bricks. After a torrid affair, Loretta tries to avoid Ronny out of respect to Johnny, but he's just too fascinating to resist. Meanwhile, Loretta's father (Vincent Gardenia) is fooling around with his mistress Mona (Anita Gillette), while Loretta's mother (Olympia Dukakis) is wooed by a college professor (John Mahoney). These brief flings are forgiven and forgotten, but there's still the delicate situation of Loretta being in love with her future brother-in-law. A now-classic romantic comedy, Moonstruck won Oscars for Cher, Olympia Dukakis, and screenwriter John Patrick Shanley.

"one day you'll drop dead and I'll come to your funeral in a red dress" will always be my favourite line ia movie
It's under rated!!
Just like an opera: All the cast come on the stage and straighten all the chaos in the final act. Love this movie.☺
Exactly!! Great catch
Actually this form dates back to at least the Middle Ages Italian Commedia, and is repeated by Shakespeare (unless everyone stabs each other and dies at the end).
I love this movie also ☺️
@@emjayay Not everyone : there's a character to stay alive and conclude.
Each character has his/her aria. Even the unlucky-in-love college teacher on his walk home with Mrs. Castorini "Like Moonlight in a Martini."
"What's the matter pop?"
"I'm confused." LMAO!
Sarcastic Sugar I know, right? LMAO!!!
Haha me on most days
Poor grandpa lol
I would love to see this movie again in a theater full of people
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
loretta's grandpa with his five dogs and iconic "i'm confused!!!" is the best character in moonstruck and extremely underrated. change my mind
I cannot change your mind bc I agree! He is precious. Everyone wants a grandpa like him. :)
No one will try to change your mind; we all agree!!! ; )
Someone…tell a joke!
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Cold hard facts
I still remember seeing this in the theater when it first came out. When the grandfather said, "I'm confused!" the whole audience just collapsed laughing. It was such a great feeling -- all these people totally caught up in the story and loving the characters so much.
YES! I recalled the SAME moment and all the audience around ME bursting. Mpls area. I just watched this for FREE on youtube, the other night. Since I watched it yrs ago, I have discovered I LOVE watching opera arias on youtube, but also, I appreciated more about this film than ever!
Exactly!
They don’t make movies like this anymore
Same thing happened when we saw it in 1987....all of us in the audience LOVED every moment of this masterpiece.
The comedic timing on this movie is flawless! Modern comedies arent like these films, they rely too much on swearing or sex jokes.
IKR?! I just love the way the comedy works in this movie where there's no need for any graphic language or violent outbursts and all that other nonsense we see in today's comedies.
@@caitlinjane92 It's quite rare dear
Couldn't agree more. We need more.of these kind of movies
There were plenty of those kinds of comedies back then, too.
I know! I hate that! They think that somehow making sexual innuendos and jokes is somehow funny. It's just disgusting 😫. We need more clean comedies like this
The final scene at the breakfast table is pure movie magic.
noope harry poter new he wife friñd his wife braéskàge us real magic
“Do ya love him Loretta”?? “Ma, I love him awful” “Ah that’s too bad” 🤣🤣
I love this movie, it has exceptional writing & acting
That line is iconic! 😂
The look on Danny Aiello's face when he hands the ring to Nicholas Cage is one of such sadness and it's like he realizes that he just lost out on a good thing and a good wife. Great acting with just his expression. RIP Danny Aiello
That was a good wake up call for him. He only wanted Loretta as a wife to replace his mom. Ditching her, he lost his dependency towards her.
Just watched this for the first time in 2021 (I know it won't be the last). ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. Cher is a goddess, we don't deserve her. What an amazing script - made me feel moonstruck in a foggy cold winder night.
Only in the movies would such a messy situation of a man and his brothers new fiance falling for each other and cheating on him while he is visiting their supposedly deathly ill mother be resolved so neatly, and without bitterness.
cisio64123 It's operatic...
Just because somebody upsets you doesn't mean you have to hold it against them.
in reality it's maury and jerry springer
@@JohnJacob33 if only human emotion could be so neatly compartmentalized. It just isn't reality.
@@CJW0056 its a MOVIE!!
When Nicolas Cage says to Danny Aiello, "Johnny, you're 42-years-old and she's still running your life." I'm thinking, "FORTY-TWO?! He looks 62 -- AT LEAST!"
All the ages of the actors in this film are sort of screwy relative to their characters. Aiello was 54 at the time. Cher was 42 playing a 37-year-old (not a stretch), but Cage was 23--nearly two decades Cher's junior, and more than 30 years younger than Aiello who's supposedly his brother. And while Ronny's age is never mentioned in the film, it seems to be implying he's in his 30s; at least there's no sense in the film that he's fallen for a much older woman, despite the real-life age gap between Cage and Cher. The movie seemed to be pretending they were roughly in the same age range.
@@Kylopod I felt that Cage's character, Johnny, could have passed as being in his late twenties, to possibly his early thirties in the movie (though apparently he actually 23, when Moonstruck was filmed). Even though, as you said, his age was never mentioned, I always felt that his character was definitely a few years younger than Cher's. But Aiello definitely just doesn't ring true as a 42-year-old AT ALL. I mean, I think that most people seem to age better today than that of the past, but even so...
@@loveanimals6981 What's interesting about Cage is that it's traditional in Hollywood for actors of that age to still be playing teens. And indeed, just a year earlier he was in the time-travel movie "Peggy Sue Got Married" playing both a teen and a middle-aged guy. He had an uncommonly mature look; he almost seemed ageless, like he could have been either 20 or 40. The only clues as to his character's age are that he's said to be the younger brother to Aiello--but not a whole generation younger, we presume--and he was already a baker engaged to be married 5 years earlier. He could conceivably be a few years younger than Cher's character, but if he was supposed to be a decade or more younger, I think it would have attracted more notice by the other characters. There were no "This is weird, I'm old enough to be your mom" moments. Their attraction was treated as if it was the most natural thing in the world, despite the element of cheating.
As for Aiello, I dunno.... There are a number of celebrities who have looked considerably older than their real age. Kenny Rogers already looked like Santa by his early 40s. Richard Dreyfuss looked like a man in his 50s by the time he was 35 (due no doubt at least in part to his coke addiction). I remember how astonished I was to find out that John Carroll Lynch in "Fargo" was only 33--he was already mostly bald by then and he could easily have passed for a man of 50.
@@Kylopod Drefuss SERIOUSLY aged in just a span of four years during the 1970s. He went from really rather boyish looking in American Graffiti (1973), to looking twenty years older probably, by the time he did The Goodbye Girl in 1977, lol.
And I've never even thought about how realistically Cage played both younger and older in Peggy Sue Got Married. Really remarkable, the believability in his portrayal at both ages (aided in some part, of course, to hair and makeup). But aging him aside, he just did a truly fine job seeming like a man in his 40s (when in fact he would have been in his early 20s). I've seen so many actors not believably pull this off in acting -- and many times often from otherwise seriously lauded actors. Elizabeth Taylor was always great with the aging-thing (probably very underrated as an actress, actually). Here would have been this seriously beautiful woman at the time, realistically portraying women decades older (as she did in Giant and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?). Again, truly remarkable.
@@Kylopod Yep. The studio thought Cage was too young and didn't think he was right for the part, but Cher wouldn't do the film unless Cage was her co-star. The rest is history.
@1:54 Olympia Dukakis' facial expression after the "Oh God, that's too bad". LMAO
Islanddude83 she stole every scene she was in.....
@@gailwebb9619, yes she did. 😁
Right up there with 'Who's dead?' 🤣
Another of my top 10 movies of all time - simply sublime. No bad acting here. Just heartfelt understanding.
RIP to the wondeful Olympia Dukakis...
the initial confusion/outrage and then resignation on Danny A .'s face as he hands ring over to Nic. That was what made him the small but crucial glue guy in so many movies.
This scene reminds me of my family and our gatherings (yes, we're Italian). Great movie and I get teary eyed everytime I watch it. One of the best and subtle part is the father shaking his head at 1:39 - cracks me up.
I tear up every time when Musetta's Waltz is playing and the camera pans and shows the picture of the elderly couple smiling in the picture. OMG. What a moment.
Same here. It captures something authentic.
I love how all the stories are beautifully tied together at the end. Also love the tremendous balance of drama & comedy
"If I marry you, my mother will die!" I burst out laughing at that line the first time I saw this movie. Was was I born in the wrong era? LOL!
I re-watched Moonstruck last night after the longest time and it brought back some nice memories of how enjoyable a romantic comedy could be in the 1980s. Cher and Nicolas Cage are timelessly beautiful together. 💓
DAMN.....they shoulda started with Rita’s “It’s Johnny Cammareeeeeeeri.”
YES!
The writing and acting in this film are second to none….every person in this film is someone we know or can relate to.
One of the BEST movie endings I've ever watched and the BEST MOVIE I'VE EVER SEEN!
Why do I cry at this every time?
me too
+moonbatt Because you have a sense of romance, a sense of humor, and the sense to know a great comedy when you see one. That's why.
1:22 I’m sorry when he pops his head up “what?” Too funny😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
This movie is truly heartfelt and honest. Another movie that gave me similar stage play vibes with great acting and dialogue like this was As Good As It Gets. Wonder if anyone else feels the same (?)
What an awesome movie! Cher and Nicholas Cage have great chemistry!!
One of the finest films ever made. Wished there was a sequel . Thank you to all involved for giving us so much pleasure watching it. ❤
RIP Danny Aiello “Johnny” 86 years old 😢🥺
Respect♥️
This movie's both romantic and hilarious, like it hits the perfect sweet spot between the two.
“Where’s the ring” gets me all the time 😭
Love this movie. I've watched it 5 times and I will probably watch it again and again
They don't make great movies like this anymore.
Bloombaby99 I so agree!!!!!
Agreed.
Agreed
And it's just going to get worse. I truly believe A.I. will be writing scripts for studios in the future, if they aren't already. Very sad state of affairs for film. 😕
Aiello's "and you're a son that doesn't love his mother!" is very underrated in this scene.
Ronny could at least see through his mother's deception. In my opinion, I think johnny liked being considered the goody two shoes son favored by his mom.
Loretta’s mom: you love him, Loretta?
Loretta: ma, I love him awful.
Loretta’s mom: awe God, that’s too bad.
The way I always laugh at the mom’s response 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
What’s the matter pop? “I’m confused” 😂😂😂😂
Just watched it and I fell off my chair laughing. 😭😭
In Bensonhurst, there’s a street named after Vincent (Gardenia). In Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, NY.
RIP Vincent and Danny!! Both were and are incredible actors.
I love this scene, it reminds me of going to Brooklyn & seeing my best friends. Great Movie!
Awww Olympia Dukakis R.I.P. 😭😔😢
Rest in peace, Danny Aiello. 😢
I can't believe it's Nicolas Cage omg he's so hot 😍
yeap he was hot then
Nicolas? Look at Cher 😍😍😍
What a fabulous feel-good movie....bravo!!
2:14😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂We all are, Grandpa.
One of the best ending lines 😂😂😂
you'll love him Loretta.... Ma . I love him awful.....oh God.. that's too bad... lol
She's right! Earlier in the film, when Loretta gets engaged to Johnny, she says, "Do you love him, Loretta?" "No " "Good. When you love them, they drive you crazy, because they know they can."
This is the truth!
One of the best scenes in one of the best movies ever! They must have had so much fun filming this
Ma, I love him awful!
That line melted my heart
Thanks for uploading...One of the best movies I ever saw!
I would like to watch this movie .I love Cher's movies She needs to make more movies.
One of my favorite movies! !
Danny Aiello Rest in paradise. 🕯🕯🕯
“Where’s the ring?” That response is greatness lol. I will literally say the same thing if my future fiancé doesn’t have a ring haha
1:23 lol that SWISH sound when Johnny says, “What?!?!?”
John Patrick Shanley and Norman Jewison said that the movie was constructed along the same lines as an opera. Trials and tribulations, and then a resolution at the end. Luckily no one dies…..except for Mimi in the La Boheme scene at the Met.
''in time you'll drop dead and i'll come to your funeral in a red dress'' 😂 love itt
One of the cutest movies ever
One of the best scenes in one of the best films ever
Pop: I’m confused.
Me: Sames, my friend lmao 😂

I´m confused!
Ha.ha.ha.ha... brilliant!
I love this movie
LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH LOVE ALL THESE ACTORS TOO WISHING SO MUCH TO COME BACK IN 87🥺🥺🥺
this always makes me cry
Johnny giving the ring to Ronny was him giving Ronny back the love/marriage he was denied. I SWEAR I find something every time I watch it. BELLA!
Such a great movie. Everyone was on their game and a wonderful script
What a beautiful film.
Cher and Nicolas Cage are now the only two remaining actors in this scene still alive. RIP Olympia Dukakis.
She married the man who loved her through and through. Bellisimo!
If I'd a mere dime for each time I've referenced this very scene, well, likely it have been my assistant typing these words.
Ronny: Loretta...
Loretta: What?
Ronny: Will you marry me?
Johnny: *W H A T*
"ma, I love him awful." 😍
Italians are so emotional love this movie Cher is awesome in it
She deserved the Oscar. This movie helped me to understand my Italian, in law family.
She didn't hide the hickey and I'm guessing neither did he
Best scene in the movie.
Poor pops
I'm in love with this movie 💙
The most beautiful movie ever .. amore amore
.this movie is the real New York..Italian life style in New York what's make new xork even more beautiful and interesting ad freekin amazing ..I looove it
His smirk is so sexy... :d
RIP Olympia Dukakis
Cher was very cute and vivacious in this movie, but I can't see how she won an Oscar for it over the explosive Glenn Close in "Fatal Attraction".
"In time you'll drop dead and I'll come to your funeral in a red dress!"
"Bellisimo! Bravo! Bravo! Now you're talkin'...."
"Johnny, you're 42 years old and she's still runnin' your life!"
"Copper is the only kinda pipe I use. It costs money. It costs money because it saves money."
"I think we should take Mr. Castorinni's advice, Heart."
Great dialog in Moonstruck. Every line in a small masterpiece.
best romantic comedy 😂
Goodnight Olympia. What a loss :(

Only caught the last :45 today. But I laughed. Cried. ATE. That's the definition of pleasure.
Bellissimo 😂 io amo questo film 🔝 This scene 🔝 I'm confused 🔝
Grandpa: I’m confused LOL
I had to watch this for a subject in college and I watched it 2x since an essay about it was near its deadline. I realized Nicholas Cage speaks so slow for no reason because his 2x version sounds normal as hell.
“In time, you’ll drop dead and I’ll come to your funeral in a red dress!”
I can already picture it. The guy’s in an open casket ceremony at the cemetery, all the men are in black suits, the women in widow’s weeds, and Cher’s just standing at the end of the line, in a red cocktail dress, black pantyhose and heels, hair up, dark sunglasses, and red umbrella, and cigarette in her mouth. 🤣
I'm part Sicilian. After my great-aunt's husband died, she wore black for the rest of her life. Her daughter's husband (my mom's first cousin) died when she was only 49 , with 4 kids, and she discouraged her from ever dating or remarrying. I could relate to a lot of things in this movie, it's hilarious.
