Haven’t counted the number of times I’ve seen this movie throughout my life…but it’s still my go to when I need to recenter and not take this life too seriously! And I love seeing that I’m not the only one to find this movie more therapeutic than any pill discovered thus far! Johnny’s brotha….
"I'm confused." Poor grandfather thinks he's losing his mind, when the truth is so many strange things happened in just a matter of minutes. Great scene!
I’ve seen a lot of movies in my time. Some good and some bad. And many others in between. But this is a perfect movie. The screenplay, the casting, the actors performances, the music , the direction. It all lined up and fell into place. A REALLY good movie has 3 out of those 5. Getting 5 out of 5 just rarely happens because it takes a little luck on top of a lot of effort. I read once that behind the scenes that the old man kept raw hamburger in his coat pockets while shooting the film. That’s why his dogs were always glued to him when they were walking together
This is my favorite film. After having seen in years ago in the movie theater one night, my husband and I returned the following day to see it again. And over the years I acquired the video and, when in a low mood, would put it on to watch and enjoy and smile and slowly get back into a good one ... all due to this wonderful, wonderful film where the entire cast performed brilliantly and the wildest and wackiest magical meetings took place and changed peoples' lives for ever.
I agree with you..every time when i am down i take this movie ...and put me up always...i know by heart every line....movie so warm for all generations and times...and suporting cast...my God....
That was Julie Bovasso who said that line. I was in a play she wrote in NYC; she was also a respected acting teacher who saw DeNiro's talent early on in her class. Julie played John Travolta's mother in Saturday Night Fever. Didn't she smack his hand at the dinner table? Wonderful woman.
@@DaisnapShe also read all of Cher’s lines into a tape recorder to teach her the Brooklyn accent and ‘cadences.’ According to JB, “Cher’s a musician, she’s a singer. She picked it up FAST!” Cher even thanked “the lady who helped me…” when she won her Oscar.
My favorite romantic film It’s so beautiful When it came out, I purchased the music My husband(1965-2017) and our children watched it over and over and quoted it often 😔💚
For my money, this is one of the best comedy scenes ever filmed, and holds it's own in most drama movies. One of the most realistic portraits of an Italian American family dynamic I've ever seen.
Great movie, for many reasons, obviously great humor throughout, but also sweet sentimental moments, and an authentic representation of Italian family, but relatable to many ethnic groups while exploring the family dynamics. Highly rewatchable!!
Norman Jewison was looking around for someone to play the Grandfather. He asked Sean Connery about Feodor Chaliapin, as they had both been in the Name of the Rose together. Sean said to definitely hire him, but be ready for him to steal every scene he's in. Sean wasn't wrong.
I have watched this film in a way that I seldom do for any other film. The edges of the screen seem to disappear, and I am there with the players, part of the movie. When Johnny Camareri ask Bobo for the desert cart, and Loretta asks him to take it away, I see that nice looking Tiramisu, and I say "Hey, I would like a couple cannoli, and a cup of coffee!" I love everything about this movie, particularly the Puccini score. Bravisimo!
I wouldn't change a frame, not one frame, of this movie. Everyone's Italian but nobody is "acting" Italian. Even the names are satirical: Camareri, Castorini, Capamagi. One performance people forget to mention is the great Julie Bovaso as Rita, the sister-in-law, Raymond's wife. She coached the cast on their accents so everyone would sound like they came from the same family. (And if Rita wanted to sit down at the table rest assured she'd have said, "Hey, where's an extra chair?")
@@deerheart87 she played Travolta's italian mom in sat night fever w/ a similar accent. Maybe that's why? Also I think it's more about brooklyn accents then Italian.
Agreed. Cher deserved that Academy Award. I suspect that no matter who director Norman Jewison had cast in it, "Moonstruck" would have likely been a nice family comedy that was entertaining and fun. But it was elevated to the lofty status of a truly great film by virtue of its stellar ensemble cast and their flawless performances. After 35 years, it remains one of my all-time favorites. It also reminds me of another underrated comedy about love and an Italian family, "Lovers and Other Strangers" (1970).
This is my Favourite Film - Nowadays there is no more Rings or traditional propose - maybe i am too old fashioned but I do like it Loretta Castorini would you marry me - where is the ring - best film ever where teach us that the tradition have good Valore...
"Would anyone like some oatmeal? Yes Mrs. Castorinni , I would love some oatmeal. I have a feeling this is going to be just delicious." Who says that except your own mother?
In my opinion the tough call for Best Actress that year was not between Cher & Glenn Close, but between Cher and Holly Hunter (Broadcast News). Pretty much an impossible call for me.
None of the nominees should have won in that year. The performance of the year In 1987 was Maggie Smith in ' The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne' who was not nominated for the Oscar for this film. I've seen this film, absolutely magnificent by her in this movie. She should easily have won her 3rd Academy Award for this, a stronger performance than the two films she won Oscars for. Almost criminal that she wasn't nominated for this. A lot better than Cher's Oscar winning performance in Moonstruck.
Johnny says" I told my mother we were to be married, and she got well right away. But in the next scene he says" If I marry you my mother will die????????????????????
How about the fact that 4 men are seated at the table, and NOT ONE of them ---including Rita' husband---offers to give his seat to Rita,,,,who is just standing at the table with nowhere to sit down....!!!!!! /Too Funny!!! And she doesn't even seem to mind!!!!
Before Loretta agreed to become intimate with Ronny she met his family ( the brother) and Loretta saw where he lived and she saw where he worked. Good plan for any woman, I feel.
Loved it then and now. I don't care. I was a hopeless romantic then, then I learned otherwise. Romance is crap in the real world. In the films, it's what you want. Long live crap. And for the record, I'd've fallen for either him or her. Totally believable (in a crap way).
I don’t get it. First Johnny said his mother got better when he told her of the engagement. Then he said she would die if they got married. Which is it?
Cher is the only artist to date that had a Top 10 Billboard record in each of the past 6 decades. Her awards 🏆 and nominations for acting are too numerous to list in this reply. You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but the facts speak for themselves.
