Less talking, more showing pls. Don't get me wrong, I would love the Android smartphone market to be innovative again, but at this point Samsung and Xiaomi are so far ahead and so deep in the market that it'll be severely difficult for a new brand to find some traction to survive. I would love to be proven wrong though. If Nothing succeeds, then we're all better for it. If it doesn't, then that's unfortunate but mostly to be expected.

I don't think so. While it has come a very long way it's still pretty rough around the edges. The reasons are that their products work almost as well with other devices as well as Samsung ones and that there are multiple options to do one thing. For example, if I want to transfer a video from a Galaxy Phone to a Galaxy Tab I can do it through quick share, nearby share, or Samsung Flow and all of that leads to confusion, so it's not as effortless as Apple's.

Nope, Carl Pei (the CEO) has always been obsessed with Apple. He keeps seeing whatever he makes constantly as the "next Apple". And because of that he never will become "the next Apple".
Here is a great example, but why do you think the in-between models of OnePlus (when he used to work there) are called T models (like the 7T and 8T). Because it's one plus letter after the S...... Because Apple uses the letter S for their in-between models. Seriously that's how uncreative his background is. Instead of innovating something completely new, like Apple did with the iPhone or Motorola did with the DynaTAC (first cellphone). He just looks at Apple and thinks "How can we be the Apple for the Android market?" and then miserably fails at that. I have a OnePlus and they can't even get the basic software right, how does he think that he can ever create an Apple competitor if all they do is just jam the fastest hardware into a phone, without ever caring about the software.... Let alone comparing himself to Apple, he shouldn't even mention it AT ALL. Not even Samsung. Because most of his competition at least bothers to put something as basic as a step counter that doesn't in their smartphone.

Carl did create OnePlus in order to make powerful devices not as expensive as the high-end brands (Apple, Samsung). So when OnePlus started to make shit, he left, because his brand wasn't matching his philosophy anymore.
When he's talking about innovations, it's not only about hardware. Folding phones were nothing but useless and expensive. It was innovation, indeed, but if people can't buy it, why is it useful for ? I agree Carl didn't tell us lots of things about their phone, but it's not a reason to just spit on their ambition.
Using the same reasoning, what brand always talked about innovations ? Apple, which, surprisingly, brings nothing but new emojis these days. Their hardware is late on every other brand and their software didn't change since 2012.

The only reason I think nothing makes a bit of a sense is that Xiaomi or most other Chinese phones have crap software. Stock Android is good but it doesn't have the individuality and branding that miui or one UI have.
The problem is from what they have shown their doesn't seem to be anything particularly different except the dot design. If it looks this bland in their presentation I wonder how it looks irl. Pixels have much better branding and individuality in terms of hardware and software design.

There is a reason as to why Apple has a great ecosystem. 1: they have money to develop. 2: They focus on THEIR ecosystem, and do not really try to push their services to other platforms. Yes, I know that iTunes is on windows but that is not all of their services. Apple really likes to control what is able to work with their ecosystem too. IMO Apple is an over-glorified ecosystem. But I do like them because their ecosystem works pretty much flawlessly. They also gave us the first multi touch smart phone by hiring the two founders of FingerWorks I believe. Mr. Jobs obviously did not mention them which is pretty rude and claimed Apple developed it... which is technically true...
I think Nothing will flop like.. what was it again?... it was another adjective... Oh, right Essential. I think Nothing may also gain popularity. As their event was literally NOTHING important. As TechAlter said their claims on other brands not being innovating, and I somewhat agree with NOTHING on that. just hang with me here... While Royole FlexPai made the first smartphone to fold, Samsung was able to push their phone to the U.S., what did adding a folding screen do? Sure, you can watch videos on a bigger screen (with massive black letterboxing depending on which folding phone you get). But I don't really watch videos on my phone... and I wouldn't want too either. It hurts my eyes and strains them. I don't write scripts on them and I don't really use my phone that much... I should really just get a flip phone.... get it? because it folds... either way, Folding phones are novelty like most smartphones are. As for other things that folding phones do, it drains your pocket. They're way expensive (and I am not saying that because I can’t get one. I could, but I won’t because again... I don’t use my phone in the way I guess a folding phone should be used. It would just drain my pocket), also they are way too fragile in my eyes. They may use Poled for their screens but that also means they are super prone to scratches. You can’t have hardness and flexibility. Once again, these phones are novelty, and I don’t mean to sound rude. I think these folding phones are super cool, and I wanted one when they first came out. But again, I looked at the cost and I know how much I use my phone, so to justify getting one would have been irresponsible on my part. But “vis ta vie” to those who still got them. To conclude, folding phones are innovative in a design sense and not really in a “This makes life better for me” sense. If you want a bigger screen, I would suggest getting a tablet? Samsung's Tab S series is super nice and I may get one. Just so when I am on break at work, I have a nice bright screen to read my comics on and watch some videos on, and then at home I don’t have to use my computer to watch shows on, I can just use my Tablet.
The cameras are a good example, I use my camera on my phone a lot, and I know that may sound contradictory to what i said earlier “I don't really use my phone that much.” But I do use the camera a lot. I just don’t use my phone to watch a lot of media hence why the folding phone may not just be for me. But Oppo was the first to unveil a phone with periscope cameras, Huawei's P30 Pro was the first phone to be shipped with it. If a phone company wanted to make a true photography phone that would be awesome and very innovative in the photography sense and tailored to those who want an amazing photography camera. I find Google’s phones from the Pixel 1 to the Pixel 3 to be the coolest as they were able to innovate software to do what hardware already did. They didn’t need hardware to compete, they used software for 3 full generations to compete with others like Huawei, Samsung and Apple. That is fantastic! This is amazing. That is the power of innovation, and I am a fan of Google's power to use software to compete with hardware. However, they did bring in some hardware on the Pixel 4 to compete. By the way Google also was the first to make a phone do night mode the best and also astrophotography the best, through software, not hardware.
Big companies like Apple, Samsung and whoever else did stop innovating in massive ways. Apple didn’t make multi touch displays, they just bought the people who did make it. They aren’t coming out with a phone that has a separate graphics card, but also it seems like Nvidia is on that. We are innovating in a small sense, but that is only because we are working with a computer that fits in our hands. It's kind of hard to innovate and break beyond our limits. We have to just wait and see what comes next and see what tickles our fancy. I told you that I am more interested in photography and I would also like a phone with a separate graphics card. Would put those foldable phones to better use and make a dope ass tablet.
But this is the end… I made my rant in a RUclips comment because no one will see it. To top it off. I think Nothing will just be another Essential bust… haha see what I did there? They may become big for whatever reason. But if NOTHING wants to become big, they should focus on transparency and knowing their limits on what they can deliver. But who am I kidding? They will probably just be as shady and non-transparent as every other cell phone company. As that is the norm, and it is scary to break the norm even though being transparent shouldn’t be scary.

It is very techy, with transparent parts showing off internals and fonts and graphics that look like they were printed on a dot matrix printer. These are not things I would think would appeal to regular folks, let alone the high end clientele that Apple attracts with their clean, modern design language.

They hyped the OnePlus Nord so much to the point people were waiting to see the back of the phone and they were talking like they've made something like nothing before. They even made episodes documentary about it before it's launch. All for a.. mid-range phone. The phone itself was not bad. But their hyping led to a dead silence afterwards. People forgot about it. That's why if the hype doesn't match the delivery it's bad. I just hope he's not doing this again but it seems so. He's hyping it but we need to see the delivery. I'll keep my expectations low because of his history with hype.
